SwiftJ0243.6+6124, the first Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar, was observed during its 2017-2018 outburst with \emph{AstroSat} at both sub- and super-Eddington levels of accretionwith X-ray luminosities of $L_{X}{\sim}7{\times}10^{37}$ and $6{\times}10^{38}$$ergs^{-1}$, respectively.Our broadband timing and spectral observations show that X-ray pulsations at ${\sim}9.85\rm{s}$ have been detected up to 150keV when the source was accreting at the super-Eddington level.The pulse profiles are a strong function of both energy and source luminosity,showing a double-peaked profile with pulse fraction increasing from $\sim$$10{\%}$ at $1.65\rm{keV}$ to 40--80$\%$ at $70\rm{keV}$.The continuum X-ray spectra are well-modeled with a high energy cut-off power law($\Gamma$${\sim}$0.6-0.7) and one or two blackbody components with temperatures of $\sim$0.35$\rm{keV}$ and $1.2\rm{keV}$, depending on the accretion level.No iron line emission is observed at sub-Eddington level, while a broad emission feature at around 6.9keV is observed at the super-Eddington level, along with a blackbody radius($121-142\rm{km}$) that indicates the presence of optically thick outflows., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present timing and spectral analysis of data from an observation of the High Mass X-ray Binary pulsar 4U 1907+09 with the LAXPC instrument onboard AstroSat. The light curve consisted of a flare at the beginning of the observation, followed by persistent emission. The pulsar continues to spin down, and the pulse profile is found to be double-peaked up to 16 keV with the peaks separated by a phase of $\sim0.45$. Significant energy dependence of the pulse profile is seen with diminishing amplitude of the secondary peak above 16 keV, and increasing amplitude of the main peak upto 40 keV and a sharp decline after that. We confirm earlier detections of the Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature (CRSF) in 4U 1907+09 at $\sim 18.5\pm 0.2$ keV in the phase-averaged spectrum with a high detection significance. An intensity resolved spectral analysis of the initial flare in the light curve shows that the CRSF parameters do not change with a change in luminosity by a factor of 2.6. We also performed pulse phase-resolved spectral analysis with ten independent phase bins. The energy and the strength of the cyclotron line show pulse phase dependence that is in agreement with previous measurements. Two features from the current observation: different energy dependence of the two pulse peaks and a strong CRSF only around the secondary peak, both indicate a deviation from a dipole geometry of the magnetic field of the neutron star, or complex beaming pattern from the two poles., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We report the first report on cyclotron line studies with the LAXPC instrument onboard AstroSat of the High mass X-ray Binary pulsar 4U 1538-52. During the observation of source which spanned about one day with a net exposure of 50 ks,the source X-ray flux remained constant. Pulse profile is double peaked in low energy range and has a single peak in high energy range, the transition taking place around the cyclotron line energy of the source. Cyclotron Scattering Feature (CRSF) is detected at $\sim$ 22 keV with a very high significance in phase averaged spectrum. It is one of the highest signal to noise ratio detection of CRSF for this source. We performed detailed pulse phase resolved spectral analysis with 10 independent phase bins. We report the results of pulse phase resolved spectroscopy of the continuum and CRSF parameters. The cyclotron line parameters show pulse phase dependence over the entire phase with a CRSF energy variation of $\sim$ 13% which is in agreement with previous studies. We also confirm the increase in the centroid energy of the CRSF observed between the 1996-2004 (RXTE) and the 2012 (Suzaku) observations, reinforcing that the increase was a long-term change., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

Recent numerical work in helioseismology has shown that a periodically varying subsurface magnetic field leads to a fanning of the $f$-mode, which emerges from the density jump at the surface. In an attempt to model a more realistic situation, we now modulate this periodic variation with an envelope, giving thus more emphasis on localized bipolar magnetic structures in the middle of the domain. Some notable findings are: (i) compared to the purely hydrodynamic case, the strength of the $f$-mode is significantly larger at high horizontal wavenumbers $k$, but the fanning is weaker for the localized subsurface magnetic field concentrations investigated here than the periodic ones studied earlier; (ii) when the strength of the magnetic field is enhanced at a fixed depth below the surface, the fanning of the $f$-mode in the $k\omega$ diagram increases proportionally in such a way that the normalized $f$-mode strengths remain nearly the same in different such cases; (iii) the unstable Bloch modes reported previously in case of harmonically varying magnetic fields are now completely absent when more realistic localized magnetic field concentrations are imposed beneath the surface, thus suggesting that the Bloch modes are unlikely to be supported during most phases of the solar cycle; (iv) the $f$-mode strength appears to depend also on the depth of magnetic field concentrations such that it shows a relative decrement when the maximum of the magnetic field is moved to a deeper layer. We argue that detections of $f$-mode perturbations such as those being explored here could be effective tracers of solar magnetic fields below the photosphere before these are directly detectable as visible manifestations in terms of active regions or sunspots., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, revised version submitted to GAFD special issue on "Physics and Algorithms of the Pencil Code"

We present detailed broadband timing and spectral analysis of the persistent, low luminosity and slowly spinning pulsar X Persei using a deep Suzaku observation of the source. The spectrum is unusually hard with a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF), the presence of which has been debated. By comparing the spectral models relevant for accretion powered pulsars, we have obtained the best constraint on the broadband spectral model of X Persei obtained so far. The CRSF is not confirmed in the average spectrum. We have also identified, the presence of different intensity levels in the source with distinct changes in the pulse profile and energy spectrum indicating changes in the accretion geometry. We further find evidence of a CRSF in the highest intensity levels at $\sim$ 40 keV, indicating a magnetic field strength of 3.4$\times10^{12}$ G., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report a systematic strengthening of the local solar surface or fundamental $f$-mode $1$-$2$ days prior to the emergence of an active region (AR) in the same (corotating) location. Except for a possibly related increase in the kurtosis of the magnetic field, no indication can be seen in the magnetograms at that time. Our study is motivated by earlier numerical findings of Singh et al. (2014) which showed that, in the presence of a nonuniform magnetic field that is concentrated a few scale heights below the surface, the $f$-mode fans out in the diagnostic $k\omega$ diagram at high wavenumbers. Here we explore this possibility using data from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory and show for six isolated ARs, 11130, 11158, 11242, 11105, 11072, and 11768, that at large latitudinal wavenumbers (corresponding to horizontal scales of around 3000 km), the $f$-mode displays strengthening about two days prior to AR formation and thus provides a new precursor for AR formation. Furthermore, we study two ARs, 12051 and 11678, apart from a magnetically quiet patch lying next to AR~12529, to demonstrate the challenges in extracting such a precursor signal when a newly forming AR emerges in a patch that lies in close proximity of one or several already existing ARs which are expected to pollute neighboring patches. We then discuss plausible procedures for extracting precursor signals from regions with crowded environments. We used the Fourier decomposition technique to investigate the stability of the X-ray pulse profile of a young pulsar PSR B1509-58 by studying the relative amplitudes and the phase differences of its harmonic components with respect to the fundamental using data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. Like most young rotation powered pulsars, PSR B1509-58 has a high spin down rate. It also has less timing noise allowing accurate measurement of higher order frequency derivatives which in turn helps in study of the physics of pulsar spin down. Detailed investigation of pulse profiles over the years will help us establish any possible connection between the timing characteristics and the high energy emission characteristics for this pulsar. Further, the study of pulse profiles of short period X-ray pulsars can also be useful for using them as means of interplanetary navigation system. The X-ray pulse profile of this source has been analysed for 15 $ \rm years $ (1996-2011). The long term average amplitudes of the first, second and third harmonics (and their standard deviation for individual measurements) compared to the fundamental are 36.9 % (1.7 %), 13.4 % (1.9 %) and 9.4 % (1.8 %) respectively. Similarly, the phases of the three harmonics (and standard deviations) with respect to the fundamental are 0.36 (0.06), 1.5 (0.2), 2.5 (0.3) $\rm radian $ respectively. We review the pulse profile evolution of the unique accretion powered X-ray pulsar 4U 1626-67 over the last 40 years since its discovery. This pulsar showed two distinct eras of steady spin-up separated by a steady spin-down episode for about 18 years. In the present work, using data from different observatories active during each phase of spin-up and spin-down we establish a clear correlation between the accretion torque acting on this pulsar and its pulse profile. The energy resolved pulse profiles are identical in both the spin-up eras and quite different in the spin-down era, especially in the low energy band. This correlation, along with the already known feature of strong Quasi Periodic Oscillations (QPO) that was present only in the spin-down era, clearly establish two different accretion modes onto the neutron star which produce different pulse profiles and only one of which produces the QPOs., Comment: 17 pages

Mutually uncorrelated random discrete events, manifesting a common basic process, are examined often in terms of their occurrence rate as a function of one or more of their distinguishing attributes, such as measurements of photon spectrum as a function of energy. Such rate distributions obtained from the observed attribute values for an ensemble of events will correspond to the "true" distribution only if the event occurrence were {\it mutually exclusive}. However, due to finite resolution in such measurements, the problem of event {\it pile-up} is not only unavoidable, but also increases with event rate. Although extensive simulations to estimate the distortion due to pile-up in the observed rate distribution are available, no restoration procedure has yet been suggested. Here we present an elegant analytical solution to recover the underlying {\it true} distribution. Our method, based on Poisson statistics and Fourier transforms, is shown to perform as desired even when applied to distributions that are significantly distorted by pile-up. Our recipes for correction, as well as for prediction, of pile-up are expected to find ready applications in a wide variety of fields, ranging from high-energy physics to medical clinical diagnostics, and involving, but not limited to, measurements of count-rates and/or spectra of incident radiation using Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) or other similar devices., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

In Paul, Raichur and Mukherjee (2005) we had reported a spectral mode change in the X-ray binary pulsar Cen X-3 using the then available ASM light curves of Cen X-3. Being mindful of the fact that instrument calibration or other issues like gain changes, software issues etc. might give rise to some of the artifacts, we had used the ASM light curves of three other X-ray binary pulsars namely Her X-1, SMC X-1 and Vela X-1 for comparison for the same observation times. In light of the recent finding of M\"{u}ller et al. (2011); which reports the non-detection of such features in the current ASM light curves available on the HEASARC website and with other instruments like MAXI, SWIFT and INTEGRAL, we would like to point out the inconsistency between the ASM ligthcurves available in 2005 and now. This information will be very useful for other users of ASM light curves.

It has long been argued that better timing precision allowed by satelites like Rossi X-ray Timing Experiments (RXTE) will allow us to measure the orbital eccentricity and the angle of periastron of some of the bright persistent high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and hence a possible measurement of apsidal motion in these system. Measuring the rate of apsidal motion allows one to estimate the apsidal motion constant of the mass losing companion star and hence allows for the direct testing of the stellar structure models for these giant stars present in the HMXBs. In the present paper we use the archival RXTE data of two bright persistent sources, namely Cen X-3 and SMC X-1, to measure the very small orbital eccentricity and the angle of periastron. We find that the small variations in the pulse profiles of these sources rather than the intrinsic timing accuracy provided by RXTE, limit the accuracy with which we can measure arrival time of the pulses from these sources. This influences the accuracy with which one can measure the orbital parameters, especially the very small eccentricity and the angle of periastron in these sources. The observations of SMC X-1 in the year 2000 were taken during the high flux state of the source and we could determine the orbital eccentricity and $\omega$ using this data set., Comment: 11 pages, 18 figures, to be published in MNRAS

We have investigated properties of the Quasi Periodic Oscillation (QPO) features in the accretion powered X-ray pulsar Cen X-3 over a period of about four years using observations carried out with the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) of the {\it {Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer}}. The observations cover a wide range of X-ray intensity of the source in excess of the binary intensity modulation. We have detected QPOs in 11 out of a total 81 pointings with the PCA with rms intensity fluctuation upto 10%. The QPO peak frequency shows clustering around 40 and 90 mHz with the QPO frequency having no dependence on X-ray intensity. This indicates that either (a) the observed X-ray luminosity of the source is not related to the mass accretion rate or inner radius of the accretion disk or (b) that the QPO generation mechanism in Cen X-3 is different from the beat frequency model or Keplerian frequency model that is believed to be operational in most other transient and persistent X-ray pulsars. We have also found that, the rms variation in the 40 mHz QPO feature is not dependent on the X-ray energy, indicating that disk absorption related origin for the QPO is unlikely., Comment: 15 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures, Accepted in ApJ

We report here discovery of Quasi Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) Pulsar XTE J0111.20-7317 during a transient outburst in this source in December 1998. Using observations made with the proportional counter array of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer during the second peak and the declining phase of this outburst we have discovered a QPO feature at a frequency of 1.27 Hz. We have ruled out the possibility that the observed QPOs can instead be from the neighbouring bright X-ray pulsar SMC X-1. This is the highest frequency QPO feature ever detected in any HMXB pulsar. In the absence of a cyclotron absorption feature in the X-ray spectrum, the QPO feature, along with the pulse period and X-ray flux measurement measurement helps us to constrain the magnetic field strength of the neutron star., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal
