Abstract

The R software has become popular among researchers due to its flexibility and open-source nature. However, researchers in the fields of public health and epidemiological studies are more customary to commercial statistical softwares such as SAS, SPSS and Stata. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison on analysis of health survey data using the R survey package, SAS, SPSS and Stata. We describe detailed R codes and procedures for other software packages on commonly encountered statistical analyses, such as estimation of population means and regression analysis, using datasets from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). It is hoped that the paper stimulates interest among health science researchers to carry data analysis using R and also serves as a cookbook for statistical analysis using different software packages., Comment: There is a data usage issue with the paper and it is requested by the data owner (CLSA) to withdraw the paper at this time

28. COVID-19 and Interdisciplinary Research: What Are the Needs of Researchers on Aging?

Abstract

COVID-19 has had an extreme effect on older people. Now more than ever we need collaborative approaches to address complex issues within research on aging. However, the pandemic has dramatically changed the way we conduct, interact, and organize research within interdisciplinary groups. This paper describes a case study of how an interdisciplinary institute for research on aging has managed the process of change during COVID-19 restrictions. A design lead, researcher centered approach was used to understand the needs of researchers as they adapted across 6 months. Firstly, an online survey (n=51) was conducted to understand the scope of change and needs. The survey found broad themes ranging from assistance with finding additional funding to adjusting current research proposals. Following the survey, two Co-Design Sessions were conducted. The first session (n=53) diverged thinking to scope ideas from the survey and actionable themes were created. The second session (n=36) was conducted to converge thinking and focus on solutions based on one of these themes. The results revealed a diversity of ideas addressing the needs of interdisciplinary researchers in aging. These ideas spanned from exploring the capacity to do research remotely and creating virtual collaboration spaces to rethinking stakeholder engagement.

35. The Effects of Cognitive Ability, Mental Health, and Self-Quarantining on Functional Ability of Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Results From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Abstract

Objectives: Determine whether levels of anxiety and depression, cognitive ability, and self-quarantining during and prior to the pandemic predict decreases in perceived functional ability. Design and Setting: Longitudinal data collected from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) COVID-19 Questionnaire Study (2020) and core CLSA study (Follow-Up 1; 2014-2018). Participants: 17 541 CLSA participants. Measurements: Self-quarantining behaviours from questionnaires administered at Baseline (April 2020), Monthly, and Exit (December 2020) time points of the CLSA COVID-19 Questionnaire Study, levels of anxiety and depression at Baseline, perceived change in functional ability at Exit, and performance on neuropsychological tests (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Task, Mental Alternation Task, Animal Fluency Test) and functional ability (Older Americans Resources and Services [OARS] Multidimensional Assessment Questionnaire) from the core CLSA study. Results: Greater cognitive ability pre-pandemic (B = −.003, P <.01), higher levels of anxiety (B = −.024, P <.01) and depressive symptoms (B = −.110, P <.01) at Baseline, and higher frequency of engaging in self-quarantining throughout the COVID-19 survey period (B = −.098, P <.01) were associated with perceived loss in functional ability at Exit. Self-quarantining behaviour was associated with perceived loss in functional ability only at average and high levels of depressive symptoms (B = −.013, P <.01). Conclusions: Older adults with higher cognitive and lower functional ability prior to the pandemic were at greater risk of decreased perceived functional ability during the first year of the pandemic, as were those who experienced greater levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms during the pandemic. Strategies/interventions to preserve functional ability in older adults with cognitive independence prior to future pandemics are warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
