Healthcare organizations can be very clear when describing “ideal” candidates for an open position. While this article focuses on the medical industry in India, the dilemma runs quite parallel to situations in the United States. But the question often lacking an adequate answer is “What do the candidates want?” Successful recruiters focus on these issues. Today’s candidates want: • Opportunities to expand and enhance their skills. This is often perceived as unlikely in smaller towns and rural settings. • Staff, facilities, and resources to support quality care. • Support for educating and counseling (disadvantaged) patients regarding wellness, lifestyle, and preventive care. • A sense of belonging to (as opposed to isolation from) the greater provider universe and its educational resources and collegiality.
