Type 2 diabetes (T2D) can cause severe cardiac complications at functional, histologic and molecular levels. These pathological complications could be mediated by ATP-releasing channels such as Panx1 and ATP receptors, in particular P2X7. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on T2D-induced cardiac complications at the functional, histopathological and molecular levels, with a particular focus on ATP-releasing channels. 48 male Wistar rats at the age of 8 weeks were randomly allocated into four groups: control (Con), Diabetes (T2D), Training (TR), and Diabetes + Training (T2D + TR). T2D was induced by a high-fat diet plus a low dose (35 mg/kg) of STZ administration. Rats in the TR and T2D + TR groups underwent an 8-weeks training program involving intervals ranging from 80 to 100% of their maximum running speed (Vmax), with 4–10 intervals per session. Protein expression of Interleukin 1β (IL1β), Interleukin 10 (IL-10), Pannexin 1 (Panx1), P2X7R (purinergic P2X receptor 7), NLRP1 (NLR Family Pyrin Domain Containing 1), BAX, and Bcl2 were measured in the heart tissue. Additionally, we assessed heart function, histopathological changes, as well as insulin resistance using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). In contrast to the T2D group, HIIT led to increased protein expression of Bcl2 and IL-10 in the heart. It also resulted in improvements in systolic and diastolic blood pressures, heart rate, ± dp/dt (maximum and minimum changes in left ventricular pressure), while reducing protein expression of IL-1β, Panx1, P2X7R, NLRP1, and BAX levels in the heart. Furthermore, left ventricular diastolic pressure (LVDP) was reduced (P ≤ 0.05). Moreover, heart lesion scores increased with T2D but decreased with HIIT, along with a reduction in fibrosis percentage (P ≤ 0.05). The results of this study suggest that the cardioprotective effects of HIIT on the diabetic heart may be mediated by the modulation of ATP-releasing channels. Background. Asthma is a common disease with rising prevalence worldwide, especially in industrialized countries. Current asthma therapy with traditional medicines lacks satisfactory success, hence the patients' search for alternative and complementary treatments for their diseases. Researchers have conducted many studies on plants with antiallergic and antiasthmatic effects in recent decades. Many of these plants are now used in clinics, and searching for their mechanism of action may result in creating new ideas for producing more effective drugs. Purpose. The goal of this review was to provide a compilation of the findings on plants and their active agents with experimentally confirmed antiasthmatic effects. Study Design and Method. A literature search was conducted from 1986 to November 2023 in Scopus, Springer Link, EMBASE, Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science to identify and report the accumulated knowledge on herbs and their compounds that may be effective in asthma treatment. Results. The results revealed that 58 plants and 32 herbal extracted compounds had antiasthmatic activity. Also, 32 plants were shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects or may act as bronchodilators and potentially have antiasthmatic effects, which must be investigated in future studies. Conclusion. The ability of herbal medicine to improve asthma symptoms has been confirmed by clinical and preclinical studies, and such compounds may be used as a source for developing new antiasthmatic drugs. Introduction: For centuries, Salvia rosmarinus Spenn has been applied as folk medicine to cure different diseases due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, antifungal, and antitumor effects. To find bioactive medicinal herbs exerting a protective effect on airway inflammation and remodeling, we assessed the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of an aqueous spray-dried extract of Salvia rosmarinus Spenn. (rosemary) in an ovalbumin-induced asthmatic rat model. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into normal control (control), asthma, asthma+rosemary extract (RE) (13 mg/kg), asthma+RE (50 mg/kg), and asthma+budesonide groups. After 50 days, animals were anesthetized, and then blood, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and lung tissues were collected for subsequent serological and pathological studies. Histopathology of lung tissues was evaluated by H&E staining. The oxidative stress parameters and airway inflammation factors in BALF and lung tissue were explored. Results: Using thin layer chromatography, the presence of rosmarinic acid was confirmed in aqueous extract of rosemary. Furthermore, RE markedly decreased immunoglobulin E levels (50 mg/kg; p < 0.001 vs. asthma group) and inflammatory cytokines (50 mg/kg; p < 0.001 vs. asthma group) and increased antioxidant enzymes (50 mg/kg, p < 0.001 vs. asthma group). Furthermore, RE at a concentration of 50 mg/kg obviously reduced the number of inflammatory cells, goblet cells, and pathological changes compared to the asthma group. Conclusion: The results showed that RE administration might prevent or alleviate allergic asthma-related pathological change, probably via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The two main characteristics of asthma pathogenesis are severe inflammation and excessive oxidative stress production. Biosurfactant (BS), as surface-active metabolites synthesized by microorganisms, is mainly isolated from bacterial strains and was previously reported to have various therapeutic functions, such as providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Our study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative role of lipopeptide BS using an experimental asthma model in rats. Lipopeptide BS was isolated from Acinetobacter junii B6. In vivo, male rats were randomly assigned into four groups (7 rats in each group); normal control rats (CTL), non-treated asthmatic rats, asthmatic rats received BS, and asthmatic rats treated with budesonide (positive control). Administration of ovalbumin (OVA) to rats was used to induce an allergic asthma model. At the end of the induction period, the ELISA method was used to determine the inflammatory and OS markers in BALF and lung tissue. Moreover, total protein and IgE concentrations were determined in lung tissue, BALF, and serum, respectively. A histological study of lung tissue was performed using H&E staining. Treatment with Lipopeptide BS decreased inflammatory cell count in lung tissue and also reduced the level of cytokines and oxidant parameters (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and MDA, total protein, nitrite) in both BALF and lung tissue. Also, the IgE level in serum was reduced by Lipopeptide BS administration. In contrast, the level of IL-10, TAC level, SOD, and GPX activity was elevated in both BALF and lung tissue following Lipopeptide BS administration. The histological evaluation indicated that Lipopeptide BS considerably inhibited histopathological changes, airway and epithelial damage, emphysema, and goblet cell hyperplasia in the tissue. However, after 8 weeks of HIIT, hippocampal levels of APNR1 and AMPK as well as QUICKI were lower and hippocampal levels of GSK, Tau, and Aβ were higher in females compared to male rats (P < 0.05). Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important and growing cause of disability worldwide, and its cognitive consequences may be particularly significant. This study assessed the neuroprotective impacts of estradiol (E2), myrtenol (Myr), and the combination of the two on the neurological outcome, hemodynamic parameters, learning and memory, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level, phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3K/AKT) signaling, and inflammatory and oxidative factors in the hippocampus after TBI. Methods: Eighty-four adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 12 groups with seven rats in each (six groups to measure intracranial pressure, cerebral perfusion pressure, brain water content, and veterinary coma scale, and six groups for behavioral and molecular studies): sham, TBI, TBI/vehicle, TBI/Myr, TBI/E2, and TBI/Myr + E2 (Myr 50 mg/kg and E2 33.3 μg/kg via inhalation for 30 min after TBI induction). Brain injury was induced by using Marmarou's method. Briefly, a 300-g weight was dropped down from a 2-m height through a free-falling tube onto the head of the anesthetized animals. Results: Veterinary coma scale, learning and memory, brain water content, intracranial pressure, and cerebral perfusion pressure were impaired following TBI, and inflammation and oxidative stress were raised in the hippocampus after TBI. The BDNF level and PI3K/AKT signaling were impaired due to TBI. Inhalation of Myr and E2 had protective effects against all negative consequences of TBI by decreasing brain edema and the hippocampal content of inflammatory and oxidant factors and also by improving BDNF and PI3K/AKT in the hippocampus. Based on these data, there were no differences between alone and combination administrations. Methotrexate (Mtx) is used to treat various diseases, including cancer, arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. However, it induces oxidative stress and pulmonary inflammation by stimulating production of reactive oxygen species and cytokines. Considering the positive effects of physical activity, our goal was to investigate the preventive and therapeutic role of continuous training (CT) on Mtx‐induced lung injury in rats. The rats were divided into five groups of 14 animals: a control group (C); a continuous exercise training group (CT; healthy rats that experienced CT); an acute lung injury with Mtx group (ALI); a pretreatment group with CT (the rats experienced CT before ALI induction), and a post‐treatment group with CT (the rats experienced CT after ALI induction). One dose of 20 mg/kg Mtx intraperitoneal was administered in the Mtx and training groups. Forty‐eight hours after the last exercise session all rats were sacrificed. According to our results, the levels of tumour necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) and caspase‐3 in the ALI group significantly increased compared to the control group, and the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), interleukin‐10 (IL‐10), forkhead box protein 3 (FOXP3), and T‐bet decreased. In contrast, compared to the acute lung injury group, pretreatment and treatment with CT reduced TNF‐α, MDA, MPO, GATA3 and caspase‐3 and increased SOD, GPX, TAC, IL‐10, FOXP3 and T‐bet levels. The effects of CT pretreatment were more significant than the effects of CT post‐treatment. Continuous exercise training effectively reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines and ameliorated Mtx‐induced injury, and the effects of CT pretreatment were more significant than the effects of CT post‐treatment. Asthma is a common chronic allergic disease that affects a significant percentage of the world's population. Niosomes are nanoparticles consisting of non-ionic surfactants that can be used for drug delivery. This research was designed to investigate the impacts of inhalation of simple and niosomal forms of myrtenol against adverse consequences of asthma in rats. Asthma induction was performed via injection of ovalbumin, followed by its inhalation. Niosomes were created by a heating protocol, and their physicochemical features were evaluated. Forty-nine male Wistar rats were allotted into 7 groups (n=7 each): Control (CTL), vacant niosome (VN), Asthma, Asthma+VN, Asthma+SM (simple myrtenol), Asthma+NM (niosomal myrtenol), and Asthma+B (budesonide). Lung remodeling, serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), inflammatory and cytokines, and antioxidant factors in the lung tissue and bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF), as well as), were evaluated. The results showed that myrtenol-loaded niosomes had appropriate encapsulation efficiency, kinetic release, size, and zeta potential. The thickness of the epithelial cell layer in the lungs, as well as cell infiltration, fibrosis, IgE, reactive oxygen species, interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor nuclear factor alpha (TNF-α) levels, decreased significantly. In contrast, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxide activity increased significantly in the serum and BALF of the treated groups. The niosomal form of myrtenol revealed a higher efficacy than simple myrtenol and was similar to budesonide in ameliorating asthma indices. Inhalation of simple and niosomal forms of myrtenol improved the detrimental changes in the asthmatic lung. Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways. We assessed the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative impacts of quercetin, a plant derivative, on inflammatory and oxidative indices in lung tissue and serum of rats with asthma. Asthma was induced by ovalbumin. Rats were divided into 4 groups: control, asthma+vehicle (Receieved normal saline), asthma+dexamethasone, and asthma+quercetin. After asthma induction, quercetin (50 mg/kg) and dexamethasone (2.5 mg/kg) were injected intraperitoneally once daily for 1 week. On day 50, lung histopathology indices; inflammatory factors; tissue gene expression, including GATA Binding Protein 3 (Gata-3), Tbx21 (T-bet), Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), Il10 (IL-10), Il1b (IL-1β), Il6 (IL-6), Acta2 (α-SMA), and Tnf (TNF-α); and oxidative stress indices (malondialdehyde [MDA], catalase [CAT], glutathione peroxidase [GPX], superoxide dismutase [SOD], and total antioxidant capacity [TAC]) in tissue and serum, were evaluated. The results showed that quercetin reduced Gata3, Tnf, Tgfb1, Il1b, and Acta2 gene expression and increased Tbx21 gene expression following asthma. Quercetin also improved oxidative stress by decreasing MDA levels and increasing TAC, CAT, SOD, and GPX levels in serum and lung tissue. Furthermore, quercetin decreased IL6 and TNFα levels and increased IL10 levels in lung tissue after asthma was treated with quercetin. Background: Diabetes can impair cognitive performance and lead to dementia. Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are reported with different levels of cognitive dysfunctions in various cognitive domains ranging from general intellectual testing to specific deficits with visuospatial abilities, motor speed, writing, attention, reading, and psychomotor efficiency. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Citrullus colocynthis on cognitive functions. Methods: A total of 42 male Wistar rats (3-4 months old and weighing 200-250 g) were tested in the current study. Rats were randomly allocated into 3 groups of control, Diabetes, and Diabetes + Drug. The diabetic rats received Citrullus colocynthis extraction orally. The behavioral tests included the open field, elevated plus maze (EPM), novel object recognition (NOR), passive avoidance tests, and Morris Water Maze (MWM) tests. Data were analyzed using student and paired t-tests via SPSS software version 16. Results: Our results showed the protective effects of Citrullus colocynthis administration against cognitive impairments. This is followed by STZ-induced diabetes in the MWM, novel object recognition, and passive avoidance tasks. Also, it was found that Citrullus colocynthis improved anxiety in diabetic rats. Conclusion According to the findings of this study, the administration of 200 mg/kg C. colocynthis once per day for 40 days can lead to ameliorated cognitive impairments and antidiabetic effects such as increasing body weight and decreasing FBS. Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder accompanied with synaptic failures and decline in cognitive and learning processes. Protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) is the major thrombin receptor in the brain that is implicated in synaptic plasticity and memory formation. In the current study, we hypothesized that inhibition of PAR1 would theoretically prevent amyloid beta (Aβ) accumulation in the brain and then contribute to reduce risk of AD. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of PAR1 inhibition by using SCH (as an inhibitor of PAR1) on spatial learning, memory, and synaptic plasticity in the CA1 region of the hippocampus in rat model of Alzheimer's disease. Methods: For the induction of Alzheimer's disease, amyloid beta (Aβ) 1–42 was injected in the CA1 region of the hippocampus. The rats were divided into four groups: group I (surgical sham); group II rat mode of Alzheimer's disease (AD); group III (SCH) (25 μg/kg) intraperitoneally (i.p.), and group IV (AD + SCH). After 14 days of protocol, the rats in group III received SCH and 30 min after injection behavioral and electrophysiological tests were performed. Learning and memory ability was assessed by Morris water maze and novel object recognition tests. Extracellular evoked field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSP) were recorded in the stratum radiatum of the CA1 area. Results: Our results showed that AD rats showed impairments in learning and memory, and long-term potentiation (LTP) was not induced in these rats. However, injection of SCH overcame the AD-induced impairment in LTP generation in the CA1 area of the hippocampus and improved learning and memory impairment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Women are more vulnerable to stress‐related disorders than men, which is counterintuitive as female sex hormones, especially estrogen, have been shown to be protective against stress disorders. Methods: In this study, we investigated whether two different models of stress act differently on ovariectomized (OVX) rats and the impact of estrogen on physical or psychological stress‐induced impairments in cognitive‐behaviors. Adult female Wistar rats at 21–22 weeks of age were utilized for this investigation. Sham and OVX rats were subjected to physical and psychological stress for 1 hr/day for 7 days, and cognitive performance was assessed using morris water maze (MWM) and passive avoidance (PA) tests. The open field and elevated plus maze tests (EPM) evaluated exploratory and anxiety‐like behaviors. Results: In sham and OVX rats, both physical and psychological stressors were associated with an increase in EPM‐determined anxiety‐like behavior. OVX rats exhibited decreased explorative behavior in comparison with nonstressed sham rats (p <.05). Both physical stress and psychological stress resulted in disrupted spatial cognition as assayed in the MWM (p <.05) and impaired learning and memory as determined by the PA test when the OVX and sham groups were compared with the nonstressed sham group. Estrogen increased explorative behavior, learning and memory (p <.05), and decreased anxiety‐like behavior compared with vehicle in OVX rats exposed to either type of stressor. Conclusions: When taken together, estrogen and both stressors had opposite effects on memory, anxiety, and PA performance in a rat model of menopause, which has important implications for potential protective effects of estrogen in postmenopausal women exposed to chronic stress. Introduction: Previous studies demonstrated that forced and voluntary exercise had ameliorative effects on behavioral tasks followed by Sleep Deprivation (SD) in intact female rats. The main goal of this research was evaluating the impact of voluntary exercise on cognitive functions while SD and ovariectomization is induced in female wistar rats. Methods: The rats were anesthesized combining dosage of ketamine and xylazine. Then, both ovaries were eliminated and 3 weeks after surgery the animals entered the study. The exercise protocol took 4 weeks of voluntary exercise in a wheel which was connected to home cage. For inducing a 72 hours deprivation the multiple platforms was applied. The cognitive functions were studied by exploiting the Morris Water Maze (MWM) and Novel object recognition tests. Anxiety was evaluated by open field test and corticostrone measurement was carried out by ELISA method. One-way and two-way ANOVA and repeated measures were utilized for data analysis and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: We observed significant spatial and recognition learning and memory impairments in OVX sleep-deprived rats compared to the control group and voluntary exercise alleviated the SD-induced learning and memory defects. Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Cognitive impairments occurs in MS patients including learning and memory impairments. More than 50% of MS patients suffer from sleep problems. It has been suggested that in animal models exercise has direct neuroprotective effects on MS and sleep deprivation (SD). In this research, MS impairments were induced using a demyelination model as an indicator of MS disease. Also induction of SD was done using multiple platform. In order to focus on the research question, combination of MS model with SD was studied. In this study, the impact of treadmill exercise on learning and memory impairments was investigated. Material and methods: Male wistar rats were used in the present study. Exercise groups exercised daily for 1 h/day for 10 consecutive days with treadmill (speed: 18 m/min and inclination: 25°). The multiple platform method was applied for the induction of a 72 h SD. The cognitive functions were evaluated using Morris water maze (MWM) and open field tests. Animals were anaesthetized with a certain dose of ketamine and xylazin. After full anesthesia, the rat was placed on rat stereotaxic instrument in the skull-flat position. Demyelination was induced bilaterally by direct single injection of 3 µl of 0.01% ethidium bromide in sterile 0.9% saline at the rate of 1 µl/min into the hippocampal formation. The dose was injected using appropriate stereotaxic coordinates. Results: All of the learning and memory indices in the MWM task showed that SD and hippocampal demyelination destroy learning and memory. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Myrtenol, the active ingredient of Myrtle on the oxidant and anti-oxidant indices and cytokines in the allergic asthma. Allergic asthma was induced by ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and inhalation in four groups of rats; Control, Asthma, Asthma + Dexamethasone and Asthma + Myrtenol. Myrtenol (50mg/kg) or Dexamethasone (2.5mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally for 7 consecutive days after OVA inhalation. At the end, histopathological parameters, and interleukins (Interleukin-10 (IL10), Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Tumor Necrosis Factor α (TNF-α)), and oxidative stress biomarkers, Malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in the lung and serum were measured by hematoxylin and eosin staining and ELISA method, respectively. Myrtenol reduced the pathological changes in the lungs and airway endothelium (P < 0.01), (P < 0.5). The level of IL-1β (P < 0.05) and MDA in the serum and lung tissue (P < 0.01), (P < 0.05), and also the level of TNF-α (P < 0.05) in the lung tissue decreased in the Myrtenol group compared to the asthma group. Myrtenol increased the level of IL-10 (P < 0.05) and the activity of GPX in the lung tissue and serum (P < 0.001). Myrtenol may improve asthma by increasing the ratio of antioxidants to oxidants and reducing the ratio of pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory interleukins in the lung. Objective(s): Neuroprotection is created following the inhibition of angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R). Therefore, the purpose of this research was examining AT1R blockage by candesartan in diffuse traumatic brain injury (TBI). Materials and Methods: Male rats were assigned into sham, TBI, vehicle, and candesartan groups. Candesartan (0.3 mg/kg) or vehicle was administered IP, 30 min post-TBI. Brain water and Evans blue contents were determined, 24 and 5 hr after TBI, respectively. Intracranial pressure (ICP) and neurologic outcome were evaluated at -1, 1, 4 and 24 hr after TBI. Oxidant index [malondialdehyde (MDA)] was determined 24 hr after TBI. Results: Brain water and Evans blue contents, and MDA and ICP levels increased in TBI and vehicle groups in comparison with the sham group. Candesartan attenuated the TBI-induced brain water and Evans blue contents, and ICP and MDA enhancement. The neurologic score enhanced following candesartan administration, 24 hr after TBI. Conclusion: The blockage of AT1R may be neuroprotective by decreasing ICP associated with the reduction of lipid peroxidation, brain edema, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, which led to the improvement of neurologic outcome. Sleep loss is a common problem in modern societies affecting different aspects of individuals' lives. Many studies have reported that sleep deprivation (SD) leads to impairments in various types of learning and memory. Physical exercise has been suggested to attenuate the cognitive impairments induced by sleep deprivation in male rats. Our previous studies have shown that forced exercise by treadmill improved learning and memory impairments following SD. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of voluntary exercise by running wheel on cognitive, motor and anxiety-like behavior functions of female rats following 72 h SD. Intact female rats were used in the present study. The multiple platform method was applied for the induction of 72 h SD. The exercise protocol was 4 weeks of running wheel and the cognitive function was evaluated using Morris water maze (MWM), passive avoidance and novel object recognition tests. Open field test and measurement of plasma corticosterone level were performed for evaluation of anxiety-like behaviors. Motor balance evaluation was surveyed by rotarod test. In this study, remarkable learning and long-term memory impairments were observed in sleep deprived rats in comparison to the other groups. Running wheel exercise ameliorated the SD-induced learning and memory impairments. Voluntary and mandatory locomotion and balance situation were not statistically significant among the different groups. Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is the end stage of severe lung diseases, in which the lung parenchyma is replaced by fibrous scar tissue. The result is a remarkable reduction in pulmonary compliance, which may lead to respiratory failure and even death. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the most prevalent form of PF, with no reasonable etiology. However, some factors are believed to be behind the etiology of PF, including prolonged administration of several medications (e.g., bleomycin and amiodarone), environmental contaminant exposure (e.g., gases, asbestos, and silica), and certain systemic diseases (e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus). Despite significant developments in the diagnostic approach to PF in the last few years, efforts to find more effective treatments remain challenging. With their immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties, stem cells may provide a promising approach for treating a broad spectrum of fibrotic conditions. However, they may lose their biological functions after long-term in vitro culture or exposure to harsh in vivo situations. To overcome these limitations, numerous modification techniques, such as genetic modification, preconditioning, and optimization of cultivation methods for stem cell therapy, have been adopted. Objective(s): High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a shape of interval training that provides ameliorated athletic capacity and has a good effect on health. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol abundant in grapes and red wine and has been demonstrated to apply various useful health impacts on the body. This research aimed to evaluate the interactive effects of swimming HIIT and resveratrol consumption on SIRTs 3 & 4, NAD+/NADH, AMPK and SOD2 expression in aged rats. Materials and Methods: In total, forty-five old male albino rats (Wistar) with the age of twenty months were allocated into 5 groups randomly. Control group (Ctrl), Swimming HIIT group (Ex: Exercise), Swimming HIIT with Resveratrol consumption group (R+Ex), Resveratrol consumption group (R) and solvent of resveratrol consumption group (vehicle). R+Ex group accomplished the exercise and consumed resveratrol (10 mg/kg/day, gavage) for 6 weeks. Results: HIIT & resveratrol significantly increased NAD+/NADH, SOD 2 and AMPK in the aged rats. HIIT increased SIRT3, but resveratrol reduced it. As for SIRT4, HIIT decreased it, while resveratrol positively affected it. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of voluntary exercise on early long-term potentiation (E-LTP) at the Cornu Ammonis (CA1) area of the hippocampus and behavioral functions by barnes maze and novel location tests in sleep-deprived female rats. Intact female Wistar rats were used in the present study. The exercise protocol was four weeks wheel running and the multiple platform method was applied to induce 72 h Sleep deprivation (SD). We examine the effect of exercise and/or SD on synaptic plasticity using in vivo extracellular recording in the CA1 area of the hippocampus. Spatial learning and memory examined by Barnes maze and recognition memory assessed by novel location test. Field potential recording indicated that the induction and maintenance phase of E-LTP impaired in the sleep deprived animals compared to the other groups. After 72 h SD, LTP impairments were reduced by 4 weeks of voluntary exercise but do not go back to control values. SD impairs learning and memory and exercise could improve these deficits. In conclusion, the synaptic plasticity deficit in sleep-deprived female rats was improved by voluntary exercise. Further studies are suggested to evaluate the possible underlying mechanisms. Video game addiction (VGA) is associated with cognitive problems, particularly deficits in inhibitory control. The present study aimed to investigate behavioural responses and event‐related potential associated with specific response inhibition using the cued Go/NoGo task to examine the effects of VGA on brain activity related to response inhibition. Twenty‐five individuals addicted to video games (action video games) and 25 matched healthy controls participated in the study. The results showed that the VGA group had significantly more commission error in the NoGo trials and faster reaction time in the Go trials compared with the control group. The event‐related potential analyses revealed significant reductions in amplitudes of N2 cue and N2 NoGo in the VGA group. While there was no significant difference between the N2 amplitudes of the Go and NoGo trials in the VGA group, the control group had a larger N2 amplitude in the NoGo trials. Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is directly related to forming reactive oxygen species, endothelial cell injury, increased vascular permeability, and the activation of neutrophils and cytokines. Niosomes are nanocarriers and an essential part of drug delivery systems. We aimed to investigate the effects of myrtenol's inhaled and intraperitoneal niosomal form, compared to its simple form, on lung ischemia reperfusion injury (LIRI). Wistar rats were divided into ten groups. Simple and niosomal forms of myrtenol were inhaled or intraperitoneally injected daily for one week prior to LIRI. We evaluated oxidative stress, apoptotic, and inflammatory indices, nitric oxide, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and histopathological indices. Pretreatment with simple and niosomal forms of myrtenol significantly inhibited the indices of pulmonary edema, pro-inflammatory cytokines and proteins, oxidant agents, nitric oxide, iNOS, apoptotic proteins, congestion of capillaries, neutrophil infiltration, and bleeding in the alveoli. Furthermore, myrtenol increased anti-inflammatory cytokines, anti-oxidants agents, eNOS, anti-apoptotic proteins and the survival time of animals. The niosomal form of myrtenol showed a more ameliorative effect than its simple form. The results showed the superior protective effect of the inhalation of myrtenol niosomal form against LIRI compared to its simple form and systemic use. Background. Diabetes impacts various organs in the body and some reports showed that the lung is also affected by diabetes, and an imbalance of inflammation and oxidative stress may participate to diabetic lung impairments. The present study is conducted to assess the impacts of Citrullus colocynthis (CC) on some aspects of these impairments. Methods. Frothy two male Wistar rats (3-4 months old and weighing 200–250 g) were used in the present research. Animals were divided into 3 groups of control, Diabetes, and Diabetes + Drug. CC was administered to diabetic rats orally. The lung tissue and BALF oxidative stress and inflammatory indices including the MDA, TAC, SOD, Gpx, TNFα, IL-6, IL-17, and IL-10 were evaluated by the ELISA method. Results. Our observations disclosed the ameliorative impacts of CC administration against oxidative stress and inflammation imbalance. Also, it was found that CC improved body weight and fasting blood sugar in rats with diabetes. Conclusion. MicroRNAs have been recognized as important regulators of the aging process. Trehalose, a natural disaccharide, displays protective effects against neuronal impairment through several mechanisms. However, little is known about the interactive effects of aging and trehalose on behavioral function and underlying miRNA expression patterns in the hippocampus of young and old rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups. Two groups of aged (24 months) and young (4 months) rats were administered 2% trehalose solution for 30 days. Two other groups of aged and young rats received regular tap water. At the end of treatment, rats were assessed for cognitive behavior using the Morris water maze test. The expression level of miR-181c and mir-34c was also measured by qRT-PCR. We found that trehalose treatment reduced learning and memory impairment in old rats compared to control old animals (p < 0.05). In contrast, cognitive performance was not significantly improved in trehalose-treated young rats in comparison with young controls (p > 0.05). We also showed that the expression level of miR-181c was significantly increased in trehalose-treated rats (p < 0.01). However, analysis of miR-34c expression level indicated no significant difference between trehalose-treated old rats and non-treated old animals (p > 0.05). Our results indicated that trehalose treatment improved learning and memory function in aged rats by targeting miR-181c. Objective: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious neurological syndrome which is caused by acute and chronic liver diseases. In this study, the effect of gallic acid (GA) as an activator of AMPactivated protein kinase (AMPK) on memory and anxiety-like behaviors in rats with HE caused by bile duct ligation (BDL) was investigated. Materials and Methods: The rats were randomly divided into the following eight groups (n=7): sham; BDL; BDL+GA 20 mg/kg; BDL+GA 30 mg/kg; sham+dorsomorphin or compound C (CC) (as AMPK inhibitors); BDL+CC; BDL+GA 20 mg/kg+CC; and BDL+GA 30 mg/kg+CC. The rats received GA once daily by gavage for four weeks, and dorsomorphin 6.2 µg per rat was administered on a daily basis via bilateral intraventricular injection for four weeks. Behavioral tests including novel object recognition (NOR), open field and Morris water maze (MWM) were used to evaluate anxiety and memory in the rats. Results: Examining some parameters of NOR and MWM tests showed that memory performance was significantly reduced in the BDL versus the sham group, and in the BDL+CC versus the sham+CC group (p<0.05). GA intake improved memory in the GA-receiving groups compared with the BDL and BDL+CC groups (p<0.05). Examining some parameters of open field test showed that anxiety was significantly increased in the BDL versus the sham group, and the BDL+CC versus the sham+CC group (p<0.05). GA intake reduced anxiety in GA-receiving groups compared with the BDL+BDL+CC group (p<0.05). Conclusion: GA was effective in improving cognitive and anxiety-like behaviors through activating AMPK. Background. Asthma is known as a disease that causes breathing problems in children and adults and is also associated with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress of the airways. Nasturtium officinale (NO) possesses a wide range of pharmacological properties, particularly anti-inflammation and antioxidant potentials. Thus, this study for the first time was aimed to investigate anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities of NO extract (NOE) in an ovalbumin-induced rat model of asthma. Materials and Methods. Forty-four male Wistar rats were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) to induce asthma symptoms. The animals were allocated into five groups: control (C), asthmatic (A), A + NOE (500 mg/kg), NOE (500 mg/kg), and A + dexamethasone (DX, 2.5 mg/kg). After 7 days, blood and tissue samples were taken from the rats. Then, the level of inflammatory markers, oxidative stress parameters, and antioxidant enzymes activity were measured. Results. The obtained results showed that OVA-sensitive rats significantly increased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1B, TGF-β, and SMA-α compared to the control group (p < 0.05), while treatment with NOE remarkably reduced the SMA-α gene expression compared to the asthma group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, it decreased the expression of IL-1B and TNF-α genes, although it was not statistically significant. The level of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) significantly reduced in A group compared to the C group (p < 0.05), whereas NOE administration significantly increased this marker (p < 0.05). Moreover, NOE attenuated inflammation and alveolar injury in the lungs of OVA-sensitive rat compared to the nontreated A group. Conclusions. Overall, our findings demonstrated that NOE somewhat is able to reduce airway inflammation by reducing inflammatory and increasing GPX activity. Maternal separation (MS) is a model to induce permanent alternations in the central nervous system (CNS) and is associated with increased levels of anxiety and cognitive deficiencies. Since methyl donor choline (Ch) has been shown to play a significant role in learning and memory and enhance synaptic plasticity, the authors hypothesized that Ch may attenuate MS‐induced impairments in synaptic plasticity and cognitive performance. Rat pups underwent an MS protocol for 180 min/day from postnatal day (PND) 1 to 21. Ch was administered subcutaneously (100 mg/kg, 21 days) to the choline chloride and MS + choline chloride groups from PND 29 to 49. Anxiety‐like behaviour, recognition memory, and spatial and passive avoidance learning and memory were measured in the adolescent rats. In addition, evoked field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSP) were recorded from the CA1 region of the hippocampus. MS induced higher anxiety‐like behaviour in the animals. It also impaired learning and memory. However, MS had no effect on locomotor activity. Subcutaneous administration of Ch attenuated MS‐induced cognitive deficits and enhanced the learning and memory of MS rats. Ch also decreased anxiety‐like behaviour in the open‐field test. The present results showed that long‐term potentiation (LTP) was induced in all groups except MS and MS + saline animals. However, Ch injection induced LTP and had maintenance in MS + choline chloride, but it was not statistically significant compared with the MS group. In summary, the present findings indicate that MS can interfere with normal animal's cognition and subcutaneous of Ch may be considered an appropriate therapeutic strategy for promoting cognitive dysfunctions in MS animals. Older people today have the fastest growth among demographic groups with increased life expectancy. Contemporary advances in the Internet, especially social media, have changed the pattern of health-based communication. Novel technologies in the form of using the Internet are affecting the healthcare environment. Online interactions can help the people pay more attention to their health and well-being. Patients frequently use the Internet, both as a source of information and for psychological support. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of social media use on the general health of older people. In this cross-sectional study, the general health survey for older people aged between 60 and 85 years of Shiraz was completed. The four health criteria also examined those using social media and those who did not. Data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical methods such as Mann-Whitney, ANOVA, t-test, and chi-square. The study revealed that the general health of the elderly was better for people using social media than for those not using the Internet. It was also found that using social media for more than an hour a day reduced the level of health in older people. No correlation was found between age and health status in older people. It was also found that the effect of using the Internet on increasing the women's health was more pronounced. Using the Internet to interact with others can significantly improve the social functioning of older people. Given the positive impact of using social media on the health of older people, planning to encourage and adequately train the use of the Internet and social media in the elderly group is of particular importance. The aging process leads to progressive loss of kidney function. Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) exerts renoprotective effects by conferring resistance to cellular stresses. Trehalose potentially displayed various beneficial effects to promote health span. In this study, we investigated the effects of trehalose on renal SIRT1 and kidney function in senescent rats. Trehalose (2% w/v) was administrated in drinking water for 1 month to male aged rats (24 months). Then, the level of SIRT1 mRNA and protein, malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity, tumor necrosis factor α as well as parameters related to the function and histology of the kidneys were evaluated. Trehalose supplementation increased the level of SIRT1, whereas alleviated the level of oxidative stress, inflammation, and histopathology scores in senescent tissues. However, trehalose administration did not alter kidney function indices in old rats. Collectively, these findings suggested that trehalose was an effective intervention to ameliorate some aspects of age‐associated injury in the old kidneys. Practical applications: Aging is associated with impairment in renal structure and function. Trehalose is a natural disaccharide, which is widely distributed in many organisms. The consumption of trehalose as a dietary supplement is increasing worldwide. This study showed that trehalose administration to aged rats had renoprotective effects through reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which was mediated by SIRT1. Electromagnetic field (EMF) effects on learning and memory in kindled animals and its effects on hippocampal neural activity are largely unknown. In the current study, the effects of EMF on learning and memory, as well as hippocampal synaptic plasticity, in kindled rats were investigated. EMF (10 mT; 100 Hz) was applied to fully kindled animals one hour/day for a period of one week. The behavioral and electrophysiological studies were performed 24 h following the EMF application. The kindled rats showed spatial learning deficits during the training phase of the Morris water maze (MWM) test. Moreover, there were increments in escape latency and path length compared to the sham group. The kindled rats spent less time in the target-quadrant probe test, indicating spatial memory impairment. Applying EMF to the KEMF group (kindling + EMF) restored learning and memory, and decreased escape latency and path length significantly compared to the kindled group. EMF alone had no significant effects on the learning and memory parameters. Based on the open field (OF) test results, EMF alone in the EMF group, but not in the kindled or the KEMF groups, decreased the total traveled distance and increased the spent time in the peripheral zone, compared to the sham group. Based on electrophysiological results, applying EMF in the KEMF group returned the ability of synaptic potentiation to the hippocampal CA1 area and high-frequency stimulation induced long-term potentiation (LTP). Methylphenidate (MPH) abuse is prevalent among youth. Drug abuse results in pain perception. We sought to investigate whether Maternal separation (MS) prone to MPH addiction. The next question was whether MPH abusers with MS differ in pain perception. We investigated the impact of MS on addiction and drug reward as well as pain perception following 5 days of MPH injection in males and females rats. Initially, rats underwent MS protocol of 3 hr daily for 21 days. Conditioned place preference (CPP) test was an attempt to investigate whether MS rats experience more reward with MPH. The protocol consisted of 10 min habituation on Day 1, conditioning on Day 2–Day 6 (5 mg per kg MPH injection in drug compartment and saline in saline compartment with 4 hr gap between injections) and 10 min test on Day 7. Furthermore, using another group, differences in pain perception were investigated after 5 days of daily MPH injection with 5 mg per kg. Sensory pain sensitivity was tested on PND 39 using tail flick and hotplate in MS and control groups with and without MPH exposure. Results indicated that female rats are equally prone to addiction in CPP. On the other hand, MS males experience a higher reward in CPP. In tail flick test, female MS rats exposed to MPH show a lower sensory pain threshold with similar MPH exposure. Experiencing MPH similarly declined hotplate pain perception in MS and controls in the females. Males, on the other hand, did not show any difference in sensory pain tests. According to results one can argue MS is detrimental. MS males experience more reward with MPH, females are equally addiction prone and MS females experience more pain in tail flick. Novel object recognition and open-field tests were used for evaluating the behavioral functions in animals. The results showed that HIIT and Resveratrol significantly improved recognition memory compared to old animals.
