Adaptations of road infrastructure must often be performed without interruption of traffic. Vibrations induced by ongoing traffic propagate to structural elements under construction and may affect the concrete hardening process and thus negatively influence quality of the final structure. This paper examines major influencing factors that contribute to large bridge vibration velocities during widening of bridge deck with ongoing traffic. The vibrations are evaluated in light of the considered limit for fresh concrete in hardening process. The analysis presents a case study of a reinforced-concrete bridge under traffic excitation. Vehicle velocity, type, mass, as well as road profile characteristic were varied in the simulation and bridge vibration amplitudes were calculated using full vehicle-structure interaction. The simulation results provide a basis for meaningful discussion on necessary traffic restrictions or other measures to avoid quality impairment in construction.

Most of civil engineering structures are subjected to potential damages mainly due to dynamic oscillations induced by wind, rain or traffic. The aim of this paper is to combined Bridge Weigh-In-Motion (B-WIM) technic and Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring in order to evaluate the health state of bridge structures. AE technique is able to determine location of active damage zones, if sufficient density of sensors is used. Within TRIMM European project, this technique was for the first time combined with Bridge-Weigh-In-Motion (BWIM) technique to correlate real traffic load level with registered cracking activity. Combination of AE and B-WIM techniques enables determining of load level at which nonlinearities start to develop. International audience; The paper proposes use of measured structural response to temperature loads for purposes of damage identification. As opposed to the most common approaches, which rely on suppressing temperature effects in damage detection, the method proposed herein utilizes measured changes of structural sensitivity to temperature loads. Applicability of this approach varies by structural type and therefore results of system identification are presented for different structural types. The method aims at identifying structural damages that produce stiffness change as well as deformation states and boundary condition stiffness. In particular, the method is applicable for evaluations without available measurements known as healthy baseline. Presented examples comprise 2 bridge monitoring applications.

The ARCHES, which is the Specific Targeted Research Project, was planned in response to the European Commission’s call for proposals 3B, addressing Topic 2.6 ‘Design and manufacture of new construction concepts’ of objective ‘Sustainable Surface Transport’ under the Thematic priority 1.6 ‘Sustainable Development, Global Change and Ecosystems’ of the GROWTH part of the Sixth Framework Programme.
