Early detection is very crucial for successful management of oral cancer or any disease as such. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for nearly 90% of malignancy of oral cavity. In the field of cancer research, there is always an ongoing quest for newer methods to lower the morbidity and mortality associated with OSCC. Saliva, a readily available noninvasive biofluid with constant contact with oral cancer lesion, offers an appealing alternative to serum and tissue testing. This review throws light on incorporation of newer technologies for harnessing the saliva to its fullest potential with increased specificity and sensitivity toward identification of cancer-specific molecular signatures for the development of point-of-care applications that could be used at the clinical setting.

Background: Ameloblastoma is the second most common odontogenic tumor that holds a unique position among benign tumors due to its locally destructive and invasive nature. The differed tumor biology behind follicular and plexiform ameloblastoma is always an enigma. Nerve growth factor (NGF), a neurotrophin that plays a major role during odontogenesis, could also possibly play a role in the pathogenesis of odontogenic tumors such as ameloblastoma. With this background, the study was aimed to investigate the expression of NGF in follicular and plexiform ameloblastoma. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to analyze the immunohistochemical expression pattern of NGF in ameloblastoma and to compare the immunohistochemical expression pattern of NGF among the follicular and plexiform histological types of ameloblastoma. Materials and Methods: Forty histological sections of ameloblastomas (20 follicular and 20 plexiform) were stained immunohistochemically with anti-human NGF mouse IgG monoclonal antibody and the staining was analyzed statistically. Results: Almost all the 40 ameloblastoma samples (20 follicular and 20 plexiform) showed positive immunoreactivity to NGF. Both peripheral pre-ameloblast-like tall columnar cells and central stellate-reticulum-like cells showed positive reactivity. The pattern of staining was membranous in the immunoreactive cells. Cells of the human biological system emerge from various concerted processes of cell growth, differentiation, repair, and regeneration to a degree. Neurotrophins (NTs) and Neurotrophin Receptors (NTRs) have robust effects on proliferation, differentiation, migration, survival, and synapse formation through physiologic regulatory signals. Dysregulation of such neurotrophic factors not only results in various age-related degenerative conditions but also paves the way to oncogenesis in neuronal and non-neuronal tissues. This review aims to highlight the emerging role of neurotrophins (NTs) and Neurotrophin Receptors (NTRs) in Oral Health and Disease and its molecular signaling pathway in physiologic and pathologic conditions. The electronic databases PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for available data in the present review. A database search yielded more than 100 articles out of which 45 were included based on the core data. The role of NTs and NTRs in dental diseases is less explored and this was the very first attempt to collect the literature data of NTs and NTRs pertaining to head and neck tumors. The results and subsequent conclusions were extracted and reviewed. Expression of NTs and NTRs in neuronal and non-neuronal tissue is a spatial and time-bound event like odontogenesis. Recently NTs and NTRs expressions were detected in a few head and neck tumors. Unraveling the molecular signaling pathway of NTs and NTRs in head and neck tumors will help in elucidating the molecular pathogenesis and the prognosis, therefore, paving a path to expand our knowledge to understand and develop therapies for many pathologic conditions.

One of the primary tasks of systematic biology is the development of our biological nomenclature and classifications. The key purpose for the development of a standard nomenclature for a disease is the need for a common language for the statement of diagnostic terms and for a means or system whereby diagnosis could be suitably recorded without chaos. Odontogenic tumor nomenclature and classification have confused physicians over the years. Ameloblastoma is one such entity among odontogenic tumors, which has continuously changed to be an evolution of the terms and taxonomy used in literature. In this review, we aim to provide a fundamental basis for the understanding of how the etymology and the position of ameloblastoma in odontogenic tumor classification have evolved over the years.

An oral formulation based on liposome encapsulated alginate-chitosan gel capsules was developed for insulin delivery for the treatment of diabetes. Liposome encapsulation helped to increase the encapsulation efficiency of insulin in alginate-chitosan capsules. This formulation delivers insulin in the neutral environment of the intestine, by-passing the acidic media in the stomach, with increased drug absorption and bioavailability. Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare sporadic disorder with postnatal asymmetric overgrowth from any of the three germinal layers. The tissue overgrowth may present at birth but becomes more conspicuous with the progression of age. Though it apparently can affect any tissue, it commonly involves skin, bones, and central nervous system. The PS is difficult to diagnose as any part of the body is affected along with several complications. To overcome the diagnostic confusion, there are three general mandatory criteria with at least one of the three category signs designated as specific criteria according to First National Conference on PS. We diagnosed our case by connective tissue nevus in sole with three general criteria. Huge cerebriform nevus sebaceous as epidermal nevus was not found previously. A few neonatal PS cases were reported. All the lesions were unilaterally distributed. Our case was neonatal PS with unilateral distribution. We report this case because of its rarity.

Campylobacter fetus (C. fetus) subsp. fetus, a Gram-negative bacterium, is an established cause of abortion and infertility in cattle, sheep and goats. Human infections have been rarely reported. In contrast to TORCH infections, this Campylobacter species is hardly recognized as a cause of abortion in humans. Since 1947 after the first case report in France, there have been only 11 reported cases of pregnant women worldwide and no published reports in Australia, pregnant or otherwise. The case in this study was compared to the first reported infection of C. fetus in 1947 to raise awareness and educate doctors and midwives, subsequently impacting prenatal and antenatal counselling in these regions. A Venn diagram was constructed to highlight the similarities between this and the index case. The similarities found included the clinical state of the patient post-abortion and the all-important history of exposure to farm animals that suffered recent deaths on the farms of both patients. Early detection of agricultural drought can alert farmers and authorities, enhancing the resilience of the food sector. A framework is proposed for developing a novel regional agricultural drought index (RegCDI) by combining remotely sensed vegetation health, soil moisture and crop water stress via a transparent Shannon's entropy weighting method. The framework consists of the selection of suitable datasets based on their regional performance, the aggregation of selected drought indicators, the validation of the combined index against crop yield, and the testing of predictive capabilities. The creation and performance of RegCDI are demonstrated for the drought prone Indian state of Odisha. MODIS surface reflectance is selected for crop water stress and GLDAS-2 for assessing soil moisture deficits and vegetation health. Three selected indicators (SMCI, TCI, and SIWSI-1) are combined into RegCDI for Odisha. The performance of RegCDI is evaluated (a) against other popular drought indices and (b) by comparing with seasonal crop yields. RegCDI is used to identify drought hotspots based on drought severity, duration, and propensity over the study area. A reforecast evaluation of RegCDI (up to three months ahead) showed that the indicators based on soil moisture deficit and crop water stress could predict drought conditions up to two months ahead with no less than 80% accuracy. Air pollution is a global issue causing major health hazards. By proper monitoring of air quality, actions can be taken to control air pollution. Satellite remote sensing is an effective way to monitor global atmosphere. Various sensors and instruments fitted to satellites and airplanes are used to obtain the radar images. These images are quite complex with various wavelength differentiated by very close color differences. Clustering of such images based on its wavelengths can provide the much-needed relief in better understanding of these complex images. Such task related to image segmentation is a universal optimization issue that can be resolved with evolutionary techniques. Differential Evolution (DE) is a fairly fast and operative parallel search algorithm. Though classical DE algorithm is popular, there is a need for varying the mutation strategy for enhancing the performance for varied applications. Several alternatives of classical DE are considered by altering the trial vector and control parameter. In this work, a new alteration of DE technique labeled as DiDE (Divergent Differential Evolution Algorithm) is anticipated. The outcomes of this algorithm were tested and verified with the traditional DE techniques using fifteen benchmark functions. The new variant DiDE exhibited much superior outcomes compared to traditional approaches. The novel approach was then applied on remote sensing imagery collected form TEMIS, a web based service for atmospheric satellite images and the image was segmented. Fuzzy Tsallis entropy method of multi-level thresholding technique is applied over DiDE to develop image segmentation. The outcomes obtained were related with the segmented results using traditional DE and the outcome attained was found to be improved profoundly. This work reports on the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) magnesium substituted bi-phasic calcium phosphate (Mg-BCP) scaffolds by gel-casting, their structural and physico-chemical characterization, and on the assessment of their in vitro and in vivo performances. The crystalline phase assemblage, chemical functional groups and porous morphology features of the scaffolds were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), respectively. The sintered scaffolds revealed an interconnected porosity with pore sizes ranging from 4.3 to 7.28 μm. The scaffolds exhibited good biomineralization activity upon immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF), while an in vitro study using MG-63 cell line cultures confirmed their improved biocompatibility, cell proliferation and bioactivity. Bone grafting of 3D scaffolds was performed in non-load bearing bone defects surgically created in tibia of rabbits, used as animal model. Histological and radiological observations indicated the successful restoration of bone defects. Background: miRNAs are regulatory transcripts established as repressors of mRNA stability and translation that have been functionally implicated in carcinogenesis. miR-10b is one of the key onco-miRs associated with multiple forms of cancer. Malignant gliomas exhibit particularly striking dependence on miR-10b. However, despite the therapeutic potential of miR-10b targeting, this miRNA's poorly investigated and largely unconventional properties hamper the clinical translation., Methods: We utilized Covalent Ligation of Endogenous Argonaute-bound RNAs and their high-throughput RNA sequencing to identify miR-10b interactome and a combination of biochemical and imaging approaches for target validation. They included Crosslinking and RNA immunoprecipitation with spliceosomal proteins, a combination of miRNA FISH with protein immunofluorescence in glioma cells and patient-derived tumors, native Northern blotting, and the transcriptome-wide analysis of alternative splicing., Results: We demonstrate that miR-10b binds to U6 snRNA, a core component of the spliceosomal machinery. We provide evidence of the direct binding between miR-10b and U6, in situ imaging of miR-10b and U6 co-localization in glioma cells and tumors, and biochemical co-isolation of miR-10b with the components of the spliceosome. We further demonstrate that miR-10b modulates U6 N-6-adenosine methylation and pseudouridylation, U6 binding to splicing factors SART3 and PRPF8, and regulates U6 stability, conformation, and levels. These effects on U6 result in global splicing alterations, exemplified by the altered ratio of the isoforms of a small GTPase CDC42, reduced overall CDC42 levels, and downstream CDC42 -mediated effects on cell viability., Conclusions: We identified U6 snRNA, the key RNA component of the spliceosome, as the top miR-10b target in glioblastoma. This study aimed to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) bioactive Sr 2+ -substituted apatite (Sr-HAP) scaffolds prepared by gel-casting with polymer sponge infiltration technique. 3D Sr-HAP scaffolds were prepared as engineering constructs with interconnected porous structure with a pore size of 200-600 μm ranging from a 10 × 10 × 6 mm size was designed. The characterization of X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersion spectroscopy was utilized in order to evaluate the crystalline phase, structure, and morphology in the interconnected porous of the synthesized Sr-HAP scaffold. The bioactive and biocompatible of the resultant Sr-HAP scaffolds were analyzed by using simulated body fluid solution. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity and proliferation of MG-63 cell lines on the scaffolds were examined in 24 h culture. Furthermore, in vivo experiments demonstrated that the tibia bone defect with 4 mm diameter in rabbits was successfully healed by Sr-HAP porous scaffold after 45 days implantation. The histological images indicated the improved cell proliferation and new bone formation occurred in the porous scaffold treated group. Background: High-quality feedback is fundamental to students' learning. We describe and evaluate FEEDBK, a novel feedback tool that encompasses the focus of learning, student self-evaluation (reflection), the encounter with the patient (professionalism), one task that the student should continue to do (reinforcement), one task that they could do better (improvement) and a key take-home message for self-directed learning., Methods: Medical students received regular bedside teaching and feedback during a 9-week clinical placement at a teaching hospital. Teaching fellows gave feedback in their usual style during weeks 1-3 and then used the FEEDBK tool during weeks 4-9. Questionnaires and focus groups were used to evaluate the students' experience of feedback before and after the introduction of FEEDBK., Results: FEEDBK significantly enhanced the feedback experience across six domains: identifying learning objectives, chance to reflect, feedback on communication skills/professionalism, specific suggestions for improvement, clear take-home message and personalised feedback. The analysis of the feedback from focus groups yielded four categories: (i) FEEDBK influenced the feedback process (delivering timely feedback); (ii) the nature of the feedback (enhancing both the quantity and the quality of the feedback received); (iii) the structure of the feedback; and (iv) the evolution of teaching and learning., Discussion: FEEDBK may enhance both the quantity and the quality of feedback and has the potential to improve the quality of teaching. Rationale: Whilst Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychotomimetic cannabinoid, has been shown to enhance extinction learning in rats, its effects on fear memory in humans have not previously been studied., Objectives: We employed a Pavlovian fear-conditioning paradigm in order to assess the effects of CBD on extinction and consolidation., Method: Forty-eight participants were conditioned to a coloured box (CS) with electric shocks (UCS) in one context and were extinguished in a second context. Participants received 32 mg of CBD either following before or after extinction in a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. At recall, 48 h later, participants were exposed to CSs and conditioning contexts before (recall) and after (reinstatement) exposure to the UCS. Skin conductance and shock expectancy measures of conditioned responding were recorded throughout., Results: Successful conditioning, extinction and recall were found in all three treatment groups. CBD given post-extinction enhanced consolidation of extinction learning as assessed by shock expectancy. CBD administered at either time produced trend level reduction in reinstatement of autonomic contextual responding. No acute effects of CBD were found on extinction., Conclusions: These findings provide the first evidence that CBD can enhance consolidation of extinction learning in humans and suggest that CBD may have potential as an adjunct to extinction-based therapies for anxiety disorders.
