The miniaturisation of transistors is approaching its limits due to challenges in heat management and information transfer speed. To overcome these obstacles, emerging technologies such as spintronics are being developed, which leverage the electron's spin in addition to its charge. Local phenomena at interfaces or structural defects will greatly influence the efficiency of spin-based devices, making the ability to study and control spin wave propagation at the nano- and atomic scales a key challenge. The development of high-spatial-resolution tools to probe spin waves, also called magnons, at relevant lengthscales is thus essential to understand how their properties are affected by such local features. Here, we show the first experimental detection of bulk magnons at the nanoscale using scanning transmission electron microscopy. By employing high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy with hybrid-pixel direct electron detectors optimized for low acceleration voltages, we successfully overcome the challenges posed by weak signals and identify magnon excitations in a thin NiO nanocrystal. Advanced inelastic electron scattering simulations corroborate our findings. These results open new avenues for detecting magnons, exploring their dispersions and their modifications arising from nanoscale structural or chemical defects. This marks an important milestone in magnonics and presents exciting opportunities for the future development of spintronic devices.

We explore the inelastic spectra of electrons impinging in a magnetic system. The methodology here presented is intended to highlight the charge-dependent interaction of the electron beam in a STEM-EELS experiment, and the local vector potential generated by the magnetic lattice. This interaction shows an intensity $10^{-2}$ smaller than the purely spin interaction, which is taken to be functionally the same as in the inelastic neutron experiment. On the other hand, it shows a strong scattering vector dependence ($\kappa^{-4}$) and a dependence with the relative orientation between the probe wavevector and the local magnetic moments of the solid. We present YIG as a case study due to its high interest by the community.

We present a methodology based on the calculation of the inelastic scattering from magnons via the spin scattering function in confined geometries such as thin films using a second quantization formalism, for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. The case studies are chosen with an aim to demonstrate the effects of film thickness and crystal orientation on magnon modes, using bcc Fe(100) and NiO with (100) and (111) crystallographic orientations as prototypical systems. Due to the quantization of the quasi-momentum we observe a granularity in the inelastic spectra in the reciprocal space path reflecting the orientation of the thin film. This approach also allows to capture softer modes that appear due to the partial interaction of magnetic moments close to the surface in a thin film geometry, in addition to bulk modes. The softer modes are also affected by crystallographic orientations as illustrated by the different surface-related peaks of NiO magnon density of states at approximately ~ 65 meV for (100) and ~ 42 meV for (111). Additionally, we explore the role of anisotropy on magnon modes, revealing that introducing anisotropy to both Fe and NiO films increases the overall hardness of the magnon modes. The introduction of a surface anisotropy produces a shift of the surface-related magnon DOS peak to higher energies with increased surface anisotropy, and in some cases leading to surface confined mode.

Ferroelectric domain walls are a rich source of emergent electronic properties and unusual polar order. Recent studies showed that the configuration of ferroelectric walls can go well beyond the conventional Ising-type structure. N\'eel-, Bloch-, and vortex-like polar patterns have been observed, displaying strong similarities with the spin textures at magnetic domain walls. Here, we report the discovery of antiferroelectric domain walls in the uniaxial ferroelectric Pb$_{5}$Ge$_{3}$O$_{11}$. We resolve highly mobile domain walls with an alternating displacement of Pb atoms, resulting in a cyclic 180$^{\circ}$ flip of dipole direction within the wall. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Pb$_{5}$Ge$_{3}$O$_{11}$ is hyperferroelectric, allowing the system to overcome the depolarization fields that usually suppress antiparallel ordering of dipoles along the longitudinal direction. Interestingly, the antiferroelectric walls observed under the electron beam are energetically more costly than basic head-to-head or tail-to-tail walls. The results suggest a new type of excited domain-wall state, expanding previous studies on ferroelectric domain walls into the realm of antiferroic phenomena.

Magnon diffuse scattering (MDS) signals could be studied with high spatial resolution in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), thanks to recent technological progress in electron energy loss spectroscopy. However, detecting MDS signals in STEM is challenging due to their overlap with stronger thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) signals. In bcc Fe at 300 K, MDS signals greater than or comparable to TDS signals occur under the central Bragg disk, into a currently inaccesible energy-loss region. Therefore, to detect MDS in STEM, it is necessary to find conditions in which TDS and MDS signals can be separated. Temperature may be a key factor due to the distinct thermal signatures of magnon and phonon signals. In this work, we present a study on the effects of temperature on MDS and TDS in bcc Fe -- considering a detector outside the central Bragg disk and a fixed convergent electron probe -- using the frozen phonon and frozen magnon multislice methods. Our study reveals that neglecting the effects of atomic vibrations causes the MDS signal to grow approximately linearly up to the Curie temperature of Fe, after which it exhibits less variation. The MDS signal displays an alternating behavior due to dynamical diffraction, instead of increasing monotonically as a function of thickness. Including the effects of atomic vibrations through a complex atomic electrostatic potential causes the linear growth of the MDS signal to change to a non-linear behavior that exhibits a predominant peak for a sample of thickness 16.072 nm at 1100 K. In contrast, the TDS signal grows more linearly than the MDS signal but still exhibits appreciable dynamical diffraction effects. We present a theory and a simulation of thermal diffuse scattering due to the excitation of magnons in scanning transmission electron microscopy. The calculations indicate that magnons can present atomic contrast when detected by electron energy-loss spectroscopy using atomic-size electron beams. The results presented here indicate that the intensity of the magnon diffuse scattering in bcc iron at 300~K is 4 orders of magnitude weaker than the intensity of thermal diffuse scattering arising from atomic vibrations. In an energy range where the phonon and magnon dispersions do not overlap, a monochromated scanning transmission electron microscope equipped with direct electron detectors for spectroscopy is expected to resolve the magnon spectral signatures., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The electronic band structure of complex nanostructured semiconductors has a considerable effect on the final electronic and optical properties of the material and, ultimately, on the functionality of the devices incorporating them. Valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) provides the possibility of measuring this property of semiconductors with high spatial resolution. However, it still represents a challenge for narrow-bandgap semiconductors, since an electron beam with low energy spread is required. Here we demonstrate that by means of monochromated VEELS we can study the electronic band structure of narrow-gap materials GaSb and InAs in the form of heterostructured nanowires, with bandgap values down to 0.5 eV, especially important for newly developed structures with unknown bandgaps. Using complex heterostructured InAs-GaSb nanowires, we determine a bandgap value of 0.54 eV for wurtzite InAs. Moreover, we directly compare the bandgaps of wurtzite and zinc-blende polytypes of GaSb in a single nanostructure, measured here as 0.84 and 0.75 eV, respectively. This allows us to solve an existing controversy in the band alignment between these structures arising from theoretical predictions. The findings demonstrate the potential of monochromated VEELS to provide a better understanding of the band alignment at the heterointerfaces of narrow-bandgap complex nanostructured materials with high spatial resolution. This is especially important for semiconductor device applications where even the slightest variations of the electronic band structure at the nanoscale can play a crucial role in their functionality.

Two dimensional materials offer a path forward for smaller and more efficient devices. Their optical and electronic properties give way to beat the limits set in place by Moore's Law. Plasmon are the collective oscillations of electrons and can confine light to dimensions much smaller than its wavelength. In this work we explore the plasmonic properties of MoS2, a representational candidate from a family of 2D materials known as transition metal dichalcogenides. High resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy provide insights in the plasmonic properties of MoS2 down to an atomic scale. Experimental results show the relationship between plasmons and interband transitions in the electron energy loss spectrum. Zinc phosphide, Zn3P2, nanowires constitute prospective building blocks for next generation solar cells due to the combination of suitable optoelectronic properties and an abundance of the constituting elements in the Earths crust. The generation of periodic superstructures along the nanowire axis could provide an additional mechanism to tune their functional properties. Here we present the vapour-liquid-solid growth of zinc phosphide superlattices driven by periodic heterotwins. This uncommon planar defect involves the exchange of Zn by In at the twinning boundary. We find that the zigzag superlattice formation is driven by reduction of the total surface energy of the liquid droplet. The chemical variation across the heterotwin does not affect the homogeneity of the optical proerties, as measured by cathodoluminescence. The basic understanding provided here brings new perspectives on the use of II-V semiconductors in nanowire technology.

Inorganic lead halide perovskites are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications, due to their bandgap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and narrow emission line widths. In particular, they offer the possibility to vary the bandgap as a function of the halide composition and dimension/shape of the crystals at the nanoscale. Here we present an aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy (STEM) study of extended nanosheets of CsPbBr3 directly demonstrating their orthorhombic crystal structure and their lateral termination with Cs-Br planes. The bandgaps from individual nanosheets are measured by monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). We find an increase of the bandgap starting at thicknesses below 10 nm, confirming the less dramatic effect of 1D confinement in nanosheets compared to the 3D confinement observed in quantum dots, as predicted by density functional theory calculations and optical spectroscopy data from ensemble measurements.

Heavy metals are key to spintronics because of their high spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leading to efficient spin conversion and strong magnetic interactions. When C60 is deposited on Pt, the molecular interface is metallised and the spin Hall angle in YIG/Pt increased, leading to an enhancement of up to 600% in the spin Hall magnetoresistance and 700% for the anisotropic magnetoresistance. This correlates with Density Functional Theory simulations showing changes of 0.46 eV/C60 in the SOC of Pt. Copper binary compounds are often intrinsic p-type semiconductors due to the presence of Cu(I) vacancies, with corresponding hole carriers in the valence band. If the free carrier concentration is high enough, localized plasmon resonances can be sustained in nanocrystals, with frequencies in the infra-red (<1 eV), with respect to the typical resonances seen in the visible range in the case of metals (Ag, Au, ...). The localization of the resonances can be demonstrated with scanning transmission electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) by combining high spatial and high energy resolutions. Here we demonstrate that Cu(I) vacancies can be directly measured from the STEM images in Cu(3-x)P hexagonal nanocrystals. Two localized resonances can be seen from STEM-EELS, which are in agreement with the resonances calculated from the vacancy concentration obtained from the STEM., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Despite decades of research, the ultimate goal of nanotechnology--top-down manipulation of individual atoms--has been directly achieved with only one technique: scanning probe microscopy. In this Review, we demonstrate that scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is emerging as an alternative method for the direct assembly of nanostructures, with possible applications in plasmonics, quantum technologies, and materials science. Atomically precise manipulation with STEM relies on recent advances in instrumentation that have enabled non-destructive atomic-resolution imaging at lower electron energies. While momentum transfer from highly energetic electrons often leads to atom ejection, interesting dynamics can be induced when the transferable kinetic energies are comparable to bond strengths in the material. Operating in this regime, very recent experiments have revealed the potential for single-atom manipulation using the Angstrom-sized electron beam. To truly enable control, however, it is vital to understand the relevant atomic-scale phenomena through accurate dynamical simulations. Although excellent agreement between experiment and theory for the specific case of atomic displacements from graphene has been recently achieved using density functional theory molecular dynamics, in many other cases quantitative accuracy remains a challenge. We provide a comprehensive reanalysis of available experimental data on beam-driven dynamics in light of the state-of-the-art in simulations, and identify important targets for improvement. Overall, the modern electron microscope has great potential to become an atom-scale fabrication platform, especially for covalently bonded 2D nanostructures. Excitons and plasmons are the two most fundamental types of collective electronic excitations occurring in solids. Traditionally, they have been studied separately using bulk techniques that probe their average energetic structure over large spatial regions. However, as the dimensions of materials and devices continue to shrink, it becomes crucial to understand how these excitations depend on local variations in the crystal- and chemical structure on the atomic scale. Here we use monochromated low-loss scanning-transmission-electron-microscopy electron-energy-loss (LL-STEM-EEL) spectroscopy, providing the best simultaneous energy and spatial resolution achieved to-date to unravel the full set of electronic excitations in few-layer MoS2 nanosheets over a wide energy range. Using first-principles many-body calculations we confirm the excitonic nature of the peaks at ~2eV and ~3eV in the experimental EEL spectrum and the plasmonic nature of higher energy-loss peaks. We also rationalise the non-trivial dependence of the EEL spectrum on beam and sample geometry such as the number of atomic layers and distance to steps and edges. Moreover, we show that the excitonic features are dominated by the long wavelength (q=0) components of the probing field, while the plasmonic features are sensitive to a much broader range of q-vectors, indicating a qualitative difference in the spatial character of the two types of collective excitations. Extreme nanowires (ENs) represent the ultimate class of crystals: They are the smallest possible periodic materials. With atom-wide motifs repeated in one dimension (1D), they offer a privileged perspective into the Physics and Chemistry of low-dimensional systems. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) provide ideal environments for the creation of such materials. Here we present a comprehensive study of Te ENs encapsulated inside ultra- narrow SWCNTs with diameters between 0.7 nm and 1.1 nm. We combine state-of-the-art imaging techniques and 1D-adapted ab initio structure prediction to treat both confinement and periodicity effects. The studied Te ENs adopt a variety of structures, exhibiting a true 1D realisation of a Peierls structural distortion and transition from metallic to insulating behaviour as a function of encapsulating diameter. We analyse the mechanical stability of the encapsulated ENs and show that nanoconfinement is not only a useful means to produce ENs, but may actually be necessary, in some cases, to prevent them from disintegrating. The ability to control functional properties of these ENs with confinement has numerous applications in future device technologies, and we anticipate that our study will set the basic paradigm to be adopted in the characterisation and understanding of such systems.

Epitaxial interfaces and superlattices comprised of polar and non-polar perovskite oxides have generated considerable interest because they possess a range of desirable properties for functional devices. In this work, emergent polarization in superlattices of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) is demonstrated. By controlling the interfaces between polar LCO and non-polar STO, polarization is induced throughout the STO layers of the superlattice. Using x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy displacements of the Ti cations off-center within TiO6 octahedra along the superlattice growth direction are measured. This distortion gives rise to built-in potential gradients within the STO and LCO layers, as measured by in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Density functional theory models explain the mechanisms underlying this behavior, revealing the existence of both an intrinsic polar distortion and a built-in electric field, which are due to alternately positively and negatively charged interfaces in the superlattice. Few layer black phosphorus is a new two-dimensional material which is of great interest for applications, mainly in electronics. However, its lack of stability severely limits our ability to synthesise and process this material. Here we demonstrate that high-quality, few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets can be produced in large quantities by liquid phase exfoliation in the solvent N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (CHP). We can control nanosheet dimensions and have developed metrics to estimate both nanosheet size and thickness spectroscopically. When exfoliated in CHP, the nanosheets are remarkably stable unless water is intentionally introduced. Computational studies show the degradation to occur by reaction with water molecules only at the nanosheet edge, leading to the removal of phosphorus atoms and the formation of phosphine and phosphorous acid. We demonstrate that liquid exfoliated black phosphorus nanosheets are potentially useful in a range of applications from optical switches to gas sensors to fillers for composite reinforcement., Comment: 6 figures

One of the most desirable goals of graphene research is to produce ordered 2D chemical derivatives of suitable quality for monolayer device fabrication. Here we reveal, by focal series exit wave reconstruction, that C2F chair is a stable graphene derivative and demonstrates pristine long-range order limited only by the size of a functionalized domain. Focal series of images of graphene and C2F chair formed by reaction with XeF2 were obtained at 80 kV in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope. EWR images reveal that single carbon atoms and carbon-fluorine pairs in C2F chair alternate strictly over domain sizes of at least 150 nm^2 with electron diffraction indicating ordered domains >/= 0.16 square micrometer. Our results also indicate that, within an ordered domain, functionalization occurs on one side only as theory predicts. Additionally we show that electron diffraction provides a quick and easy method for distinguishing between graphene, C2F chair and fully fluorinated stoichiometric CF 2D phases.
