Abstract

International audience; Despite the strong reduction in rainfall observed after 1968, the water table of some endorheic areas in the Sahel has been found to be rising over the last several decades. It has been previously demonstrated that this is due to land use changes which have led to a severe increase in runoff and erosion. In such areas, the excess in runoff causes a strong increase in the number of ponds, their sizes and thus, their duration. Ponds have been identified as the main zones of deep infiltration of water. The aim of this study was to investigate whether other areas of the Sahelian region could also be defined as deep infiltration ones as well, and then, whether they were contributing to aquifer recharge. Soil water content was surveyed for five consecutive years (2004-2008) by implementing a set of measurement devices at different depths. The hydrologic water balance was monitored at stream flow gauge stations located upstream and downstream of two small endorheic catchments. The observed replacement of bush vegetation by crops and fallow areas led to the appearance of extended bare soil areas due to both aeolian and hydric erosion, triggering a strong reduction in soil infiltrability under millet fields and fallow lands as well as in the soil water holding capacity. It also resulted in the formation of a great number of gullies and sand sediment deposits in the endorheic areas. Measurements showed that sandy deposits correspond in fact to large areas of deep infiltration: tens of thousands of cubic meters of water infiltrated catchments of less than 1 km(2). Runoff decreased by up to 50% in the sandy deposit areas, while infiltration (close to 1300 mm h(-1)) was observed up to depths of 10 m. These factors would raise the water table and significantly modify the surface and sub-surface components of the water cycle.

Abstract

International audience; We review the main results of land-surface studies obtained in the three sites of the long-term observing system AMMA-CATCH. Runoff in the Sahel enhances the variability of energy partitioning between non-infiltrative areas where sensible heat is dominant and infiltrative areas where soil water availability increases the latent flux. In terms of water resources, an increase in runoff over the past 50 years, already reported for the exoreic Sahel, was revealed in the endoreic Sahel. In the Sudanian domain, the subsurface origin of streamflow could explain its decrease over the same period.

Abstract

During the West African monsoon season, precipitation is strongly coupled to soil moisture availability. This interaction is generally understood as a positive feedback mechanism, and has been considered on very different spatial and temporal scales. Past research has mainly focused on this feedback in terms of the effects on general precipitation patterns, not on a single convective system. In this research, a single squall line is reproduced using the Weather Research and Forecasting Advanced Research (WRF-ARW) mesoscale weather model. Model results are analyzed and compared with surface and upper-air observations. A sensitivity analysis on the influence of soil moisture on the squall line is performed through five numerical experiments. In four experiments, soil moisture is increased or decreased with respect to a control experiment. This is done in two manners: by affecting soil moisture most strongly in the wetter places in the modelled domain and by affecting soil moisture most strongly in the drier places. Minor deviations occur in the path of the squall line after modifying soil moisture most strongly in the wetter places. Systematic deviations occur in its path after increasing soil moisture most strongly in the drier places. A mechanism is proposed that connects the applied soil moisture modifications to larger-scale flow patterns that determine the path of the squall line. In all five experiments, the precipitation intensity of the squall line strongly declines when the system moves towards western areas with lower soil moisture values. It is concluded that a positive effect of local soil moisture on precipitation intensity in passing squall lines is likely on the considered length-scale of 100 km. Until now, this mechanism has only been shown for much smaller spatial scales.

17. Study of the water budget of streets: experimentation and modelling

Abstract

The study of two stretches of street during 38 months allowed to analyze the hydrological behavior of streets during rain events. The results show that runoff coefficients are very variable and runoff losses may be important. In order to better understand this behavior, a physical based model is used. This model, BiL, combine a porous media flow module with a surface runoff module. The lateral runoff transfer in the lateral gutter is approximated by the Muskingum model. Evaporation is simulated by an adaptation of the Penman\342\200\231s method. A sensitivity study showed that the model is mainly sensitive to saturated hydraulic conductivity of the asphalt pavement and to the storage capacity. The comparison of simulated and observed data gives good results for the runoff outflow at a 3 minutes time step. On the other hand, the simulation results are less encouraging for the runoff coefficient. This study of the water budget of two street stretches during a period of 38 indicates that the infiltration and evaporation represent between 20 and 30 % of rain.

18. Bilan hydrique des voiries urbaines : Observations et modélisation

Abstract

Les voiries urbaines produisent des débits importants à cause du ruissellement de l'eau en surface. La présence de ce ruissellement fort pose des problèmes environnementaux et la présence d'eau en surface, des problèmes de sécurité routière. L'objectif de ce travail est d'étudier la formation du ruissellement sur les voiries. Pour cela le ruissellement est étudié en relation avec les autres termes qui composent le bilan hydrique d'une voirie. Une première partie expérimentale effectuée sur des plaques d'enrobé de voirie (surface de 0,5 m²) montre que les pertes au ruissellement sont principalement constituées par le stockage d'eau à la surface et à l'intérieur de l'enrobé au cours de l'événement pluvieux. Puis l'eau stockée est ensuite évaporée. Afin de mieux comprendre l'évaporation, une expérience de comparaison de différentes méthodes d'estimation de l'évaporation est réalisée au-dessus d'un parking (surface de 2500 m²). Cette expérience a mis en avant la difficulté d'une telle mesure pour ce type de surface. L'étude de deux tronçons de voirie (surfaces de 477 et 311 m²), suivis pendant 38 mois au LCPCNantes, montre que les coefficients de ruissellement sont variables et que les pertes au ruissellement sont non négligeables (entre 30 et 40 % de la pluie selon le tronçon). Un modèle simple de pertes au ruissellement construit à partir de pertes initiales et continues ne permet pas de reproduire de façon satisfaisante le coefficient de ruissellement. Enfin pour compléter ces observations expérimentales, un modèle à base physique est utilisé. Ce modèle associe un module d'écoulement en milieu poreux et un module de ruissellement. Le transfert du ruissellement dans le caniveau est simulé par le modèle de Muskingum. Ce modèle est appliqué aux tronçons de voiries étudiés expérimentalement. Une étude de sensibilité du modèle montre l'influence de la conductivité hydraulique à saturation et de la capacité de stockage de l'enrobé. Les débits simulés sont correctement reproduits mais les coefficients de ruissellement et les pertes au ruissellement sont encore mal évalués. Cependant, ce modèle présente l'avantage de pouvoir estimer l'ensemble des termes du bilan hydrique : stockage, évaporation, infiltration et également d'estimer la hauteur d'eau à la surface des voiries. Les résultats de modélisation sont analysés de façon critique. Urban roads produce important flow because of water runoff. This significant runoff involves environmental problems and water on road surface involves problems of safety road. The objective of this work is to study the formation of the runoff on the roads. So the runoff is studied in relation to the other terms constitutive of the water budget on a road. A first experimental part carried out on bituminous plates of road (area of 0.5 m²) shows that the runoff losses are mainly composed by storage of water on the surface and inside the bituminous plate during the event. Then the intercepted water is evaporated. In order to better understand evaporation, an experimental comparison of different methods of evaporation estimation is carried out above a carpark (area of 2500 m²). This experiment put ahead the difficulty of such measurement for this kind of surface. The study of two roads stretches (area of 477 and 311 m²), instrumented during 38 months on the LCPC-Nantes, shows that runoff coefficients are variable and that runoff losses are considerable (between 30 and 40 % of the rain according to the stretch). A simple model of losses built from initial and continuous losses cannot reproduce correctly runoff coefficients. Finally to supplement these experimental observations, a physical based model is applied. This model associate a module of flow in porous media and a runoff module. The runoff transfer in the gutter is simulated by the Muskingum's model. This model is applied to experimental studied roads stretches. A sensitivity analysis shows the influence of saturated hydraulic conductivity and of storage capacity of the bituminous. The simulated flows are correctly reproduced but runoff coefficients and losses are still insufficiently estimated. However, this model shows the advantage of being able to estimate all the terms of water budget: storage, evaporation, infiltration and also to estimate the water depth at the surface of the road. The results are analysed and criticized.

Abstract

This study analyses the response of the continental surface to a rain event, taking advantage of the long-term near-surface measurements over different vegetation covers at different latitudes, acquired during the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) experiment. The simulated surface response by nine land surface models involved in AMMA Land Model Intercomparison Project (ALMIP), is compared to the observations. The surface response, described via the evaporative fraction, evolves in two steps: the immediate surface response and the surface recovery. The immediate surface response corresponds to an increase in the evaporative fraction occurring immediately after the rain. For all the experimental sites, the immediate surface response is strongest when the surface is relatively dry. From the simulation point of view, this relationship is highly model and latitude dependent. The recovery period, characterized by a decrease of the evaporative fraction during several days after the rain, follows an exponential relationship whose rate is vegetation dependent: from 1 day over bare soil to 70 days over the forest. Abstract

This study reports carbon and water fluxes between the land surface and atmosphere in eleven different ecosystems types in Sub-Saharan Africa, as measured using eddy covariance (EC) technology in the first two years of the CarboAfrica network operation. The ecosystems for which data were available ranged in mean annual rainfall from 320 mm (Sudan) to 1150 mm (Republic of Congo) and include a spectrum of vegetation types (or land cover) (open savannas, woodlands, croplands and grasslands). Given the shortness of the record, the EC data were analysed across the network rather than longitudinally at sites, in order to understand the driving factors for ecosystem respiration and carbon assimilation, and to reveal the different water use strategies in these highly seasonal environments. Values for maximum net carbon assimilation rates (photosynthesis) ranged from −12.5 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 in a dry, open Millet cropland (C4-plants) up to −48 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 for a tropical moist grassland. Maximum carbon assimilation rates were highly correlated with mean annual rainfall (r2=0.74). Maximum photosynthetic uptake rates (Fpmax) were positively related to satellite-derived fAPAR. Ecosystem respiration was dependent on temperature at all sites, and was additionally dependent on soil water content at sites receiving less than 1000 mm of rain per year. All included ecosystems dominated by C3-plants, showed a strong decrease in 30-min assimilation rates with increasing water vapour pressure deficit above 2.0 kPa.

29. Quantifying evapotranspiration fluxes on green roofs: A comparative analysis of observational methods.

Abstract

Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important process in green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) aiming to reduce urban drainage, to promote cooling and/or to contribute to an urban hydrological balance restoration closer to the natural one. However, on these structures and particularly on green roofs (GR), its evaluation remains challenging and subject to discussion. Estimates of ET by water balance, energy balance, and an ET chamber were performed on five different plots of a full-scale experimental green roof in Trappes (France). Compared to both water balance (90th percentile range of daily ET values: 0.8 mm/d to 3 mm/d) and chamber methods (90th percentile range of daily ET values: 1 mm/d to 1.5 mm/d), the energy balance (90th percentile range of daily ET values is between 1.8 mm and 3.7 mm) produces higher values, 1 to 2 times higher in cumulative values during common periods. The chamber ET displays a similar trend to the energy balance on an hourly basis, and its values remain within the same range as the water balance evaluations on a daily time-step. All three assessments consistently fell below the potential ET values estimated with the Penman-Monteith formula. Critical issues in ET estimation through experimentation have arisen. Sensible heat flux (H) significantly increases ET values when using the energy balance approach compared to the other two methods. The Water Balance method is practical, but on days following rainfall events, the Chamber method may prove more reliable, albeit more time and labour-intensive. The three methods indicated that the substrate thickness was the main contributing factor to increase ET, with well-maintained herbaceous plants providing higher ET values than sedums in thick (15 cm) substrates. 30. An Investigation of the Accuracy of EC5 and 5TE Capacitance Sensors for Soil Moisture Monitoring in Urban Soils-Laboratory and Field Calibration.

Abstract

Recently, emphasis has been placed on finding a reliable estimation of soil water content. In this study, two capacitance sensors EC5 and 5TE (METER Group) were utilized. These sensors provide many benefits relative to other sensors in that they are cost-effective and very economical regarding energy use, operate at a high measurement frequency of 70 MHz, and are dedicated to measuring at a small volume because of their small size. This makes them suitable for the context of use in this research, which consists of multiple sustainable drainage systems SuDS. Several studies have evaluated these two types of sensor but not for urban soils with specific characteristics. In addition, results from the literature are divergent and the published calibration data are limited. Therefore, an in-depth investigation of their accuracy is assessed in this paper. At first, the literature's existing procedures and methods were examined. The sensor-to-sensor variability, as well as repeatability, were tested in soil and solutions. Additionally, a field calibration method was conducted to estimate the effects of soil texture on sensors readings. Two laboratory calibration methods having different principles were also applied, compared to each other and to the field calibration as well. Results revealed weak sensor-to-sensor variability (coefficient of variation up to 15% in soil) and also good repeatability (0.1%), for both sensors. A soil-specific calibration equation has improved the estimation of the volumetric water content. In case of soil having high field bulk density, the undisturbed soil calibration method described and proposed in this paper gives promising results. The latter method yields a volumetric water content (VWC) prediction accuracy of 0.025 m 3 ∙m -3 on a sandy loam soil. This paper presents a large knowledge of capacitance sensors measurement technique as well as their calibration procedures and methods. Limitations of existing procedures have been identified and key elements for selecting the appropriate one are suggested. Derived calibration equations have also been provided for three urban soils with different particle size distribution, ranging from sandy loam to silt loam. Accurate monitoring of soil moisture content in urban soils is thus achievable.

Abstract

In order to determine the relative importance of a vegetative filter strip and a biofiltration swale in a treatment train for road runoff, US EPA Storm Water Management Model was used to model infiltration and runoff from the filter strip. The model consisted of a series of subcatchments representing the road, the filter strip and the side-slopes of the swale. Simulations were carried out for different rain scenarios representing a variety of climatic conditions. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was conducted for the model's different parameters (soil characteristics and initial humidity, roughness, geometry, etc.). This exercise showed that for the system studied, the majority of road runoff is treated by the filter strip rather than the biofiltration swale, an effect observed especially during periods of low-intensity rainfall. Additionally, it was observed that the combination of infiltration of road runoff in the filter strip and direct rainfall on the system leads to a significant and variable dilution of the runoff reaching the swale. This result has important implications for evaluating the treatment efficiency of the system.

Abstract

The hypoxic exercise test combining a 4,800-m simulated altitude and a cycloergometer exercise at 30% of normoxic maximal aerobic power (MAP) is used to evaluate the individual chemosensitivity to hypoxia in submaximal exercise conditions. This test allows the calculation of three main parameters: the decrease in arterial oxygen saturation induced by hypoxia at exercise (ΔSa(e)) and the ventilatory (HVR(e)) and cardiac (HCR(e)) responses to hypoxia at exercise. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of altitude and exercise intensity on the values of ΔSa(e), HVR(e), and HCR(e). Nine subjects performed hypoxic tests at three simulated altitudes (3,000 m, 4,000 m, and 4,800 m) and three exercise intensities (20%, 30%, and 40% MAP). ΔSa(e) increased with altitude and was higher for 40% MAP than for 20% or 30% (P < 0.05). For a constant heart rate, the loss in power output induced by hypoxia, relative to ΔSa(e), was independent of altitude (4,000-4,800 m) and of exercise intensity. HVR(e) and HCR(e) were independent of altitude (3,000-4,800 m) and exercise intensity (20%-40% MAP). Moreover, the intraindividual variability of responses to hypoxia was lower during moderate exercise than at rest (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001). Therefore, we suggest that HVR(e) and HCR(e) are invariant parameters that can be considered as intrinsic physiological characteristics of chemosensitivity to hypoxia.
