The trigger system of the ALICE dimuon arm is based on Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC). Besides a short description of the trigger system, the test results of an RPC prototype with electrodes made of low resistivity bakelite (~3.109cm) are presented. Rate capability, time resolution and cluster size have been measured for the RPC operated both in streamer and in avalanche mode. Although the rate capability is obviously higher in avalanche mode (few kHz/cm2), remarkable results have been achieved even in streamer mode (several hundreds of Hz/cm2).

The tracking performances of the ALICE forward muon spectrometer are investigated for several front-absorbers designs. The obtained mass resolution is compared to the one of the absorber proposed in the LOI. Out of punchthrough considerations, two absorbers compositions, including a Carbon+Concrete sandwich design, allow to reach the requested mass resolution for the Y's. Almost identical behaviours are observed versus rapidity and transverse momentum of resonances for both new candidates. These proposed designs improve the mass resolution performances and could stand as suitable absorber options for the forward muon spectrometer of ALICE. The Carbon+Concrete absorber has been retained for the Technical Proposal [1].

The mass distributions of baryon resonances populated in near-central collisions of Au on Au and Ni on Ni are deduced by defolding the p (t) spectra of charged pions by a method which does not depend on a specific resonance shape. In addition the mass distributions of resonances are obtained from the invariant masses of (p. pi(+/-)) pairs. With both methods the deduced mass distributions are shifted by an average value of -60 MeV/c(2) relative to the mass distribution of the free Delta(1232)resonance, the distributions descent almost exponentially towards mass values of 2000 MeV/c(2). The observed differences between (p, pi(-)) and (p, pi(+)) pairs indicate a contribution of isospin I = 1/2 resonances. The attempt to consistently describe the deduced mass distributions and the reconstructed kinetic energy spectra of the resonances leads to new insights about the freeze out conditions, i.e. to rather low temperatures and large expansion velocities.

Using the FOPI detector at GSI Darmstadt, excitation functions of collective flow components were measured for the Au+Au system, in the reaction plane and out of this plane, at seven incident energies ranging from 100AMeV to 800AMeV. The threshold energies, corresponding to the onset of sideward-flow (balance energy) and squeeze-out effect (transition energy), are extracted from extrapolations of these excitation functions toward lower beam energies for charged products with Z greater than or equal to 2. The transition energy is found to be larger than the balance energy. The impact parameter dependence of both balance and transition energies, when extrapolated to central collisions, suggests comparable although slightly higher values than the threshold energy for the radial flow. The relevant parameter seems to be the energy deposited into the system in order to overcome the attractive nuclear forces.

An alternative solution for the muon tracking chambers of ALICE, based on the detector MICROMEGAS [1], is investigated at SUBATECH. Three prototypes have been constructed and tested in the 3 GeV/c pion beam of the CERN PS. This paper describes the characteristics of these detectors, and the set-up used for the tracking test. Results concerning efficiencies and spatial resolutions as a function of gas mixtures, high voltages and the angular incidences of the particles are presented and discussed.

Collisions of Au on Au at incident energies of 150, 250 and 400 A MeV were studied with the FOPI-facility at GSI Darmstadt. Nuclear charge (Z 16) and velocity of the products were detected with full azimuthal acceptance at laboratory angles of 1-30 degrees. Isotope separated light charged particles were measured with movable multiple telescopes in an angular range of 6-90 degrees. Central collisions representing about 1 % of the reaction cross section were selected by requiring high total transverse energy, but vanishing sideflow. The velocity space distributions and yields of the emitted fragments are reported. The data are analysed in terms of a thermal model including radial flow. A comparison with predictions of the Quantum Molecular Model is presented.

Charged pions are measured with the $4\pi$ detector $FOPI$ at $GSI$ using the Au on Au reaction at 1.06 AGeV bombarding energy. The pion multiplicities $n_{\rm \pi}$ increase with the number of participants $A_{\rm part}$. The average pion multiplicities per participant are $\frac{}{} = 0.0308$ and $\frac{}{} =0.0182$. These values are only half as large as extrapolated from the low-mass systems studied by Harris et al. The ratio $\frac{n_{\rm \pi^-}} {n_{\rm \pi^+}}$ increases with $A_{\rm part}$ and decreases with the pion kinetic energies. The pion kinetic energy spectra have concave shapes, their parametrization in terms of thermal Boltzmann distributions yields a low $(T_{\rm l,\pi})$ and high $(T_{\rm h,\pi})$ temperature which change with the cm emission angle $\Theta$ of the pions. The possibility of using, for the ALICE forward muon spectrometer, a superconducting toroidal magnet has been considered in place of the SC dipole. The study has been restricted to the acceptance calculations and to the tracking simulations of the toroidal magnet but without technical investigations. The estimated performances are found maladjusted to the physics requirements of the heavy ion runs.

The tracking performances of the ALICE forward muon spectrometer, with a dipole magnet, are investigated in this note. The study concerns the track finding and the mass resolution as well as the acceptance of the spectrometer for the Fi's, J/Psi and Gamma's. With the proposed setup, a mass resolution below 100 MeV is obtained and a track finding efficiency better than 90% is achieved for the heavy resonance. A absolute acceptance of 4.83 % is found which is acceptable in order to reach the requiered statistic for Gamma's' and Gamma's'' in Pb-Pb collisions.

Particles with strange quark content produced in the system 1.93 AGeV $^{58}$Ni on $^{58}$Ni have been investigated at GSI Darmstadt with the FOPI detector system. The correlation of these produced particles was analyzed with respect to the reaction plane. Lambda baryons exhibit a very pronounced sideward flow pattern which is qualitatively similar to the proton flow. However, the kaon ($K^+$,$K^0_S$) flow patterns are significantly different from that of the protons, and their form may be useful to restrict theoretical models on the form of the kaon potential in the nuclear medium.

We present new experimental data obtained with the FOPI detector at SIS, for the Au+Au heavy-ion collisions at 400 AMeV incident energy. The sideward flow, determined from a method without reaction-plane reconstruction, and the nuclear stopping are studied as a function of the centrality of the collisions. In order to study the nuclear in-medium effects, which act on the NN cross sections and potential and hence on experimental observables like the nuclear-matter flow and stopping, these results are compared with the predictions of two different QMD versions. The first one offers a fully microscopic calculation of the cross sections and potential in the G-matrix formalism and naturally includes the in-medium effects (this version is for the first time confronted with experiment). The second one uses a standard Skyrme potential plus a momentum-dependent term in order to mimic the in-medium effects.

The object of this research commanded by the European Community was to understand the mechanisms and the efficiency of the discourses of prevention both explicit (officials campaigns toward the public) and others type of discourses which are broadcasted to inform people through the mass media in order to form professionals of health care. During several years it is realy an instrumentation of TV programs which appears bringing cognitive contributions and sharing emotionnals ressources with the TV audience.
