Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a treatment modality that combines the electroporation of cell membranes with chemotherapy to facilitate the transport of non‐permeant molecules into cells. Several canine and feline studies have shown promising results, suggesting that ECT can be a valid adjuvant or alternative treatment option for some tumours. Abstract

Research on natural ingredients used to stabilize oil‐in‐water emulsions has increased in recent years. Therefore, the current research is conducted to study the physicochemical properties of bacterial cellulose isolated from kombucha production and considered as a waste without economic value. Bacterial cellulose isolated from kombucha is dried, sieved, milled, and the resulting material (dried bacterial cellulose [DBC]) is characterized with respect to morphology, color, antioxidant properties, identification of volatile compounds, water and oil absorption, and moisture isotherm. Furthermore, DBC is used as a stabilizer of oil‐in‐water emulsions in different concentrations (0.5%–2% w/v). DBC has a dark color with irregular shape and particle size between 30 and 180 µm. This material has high antioxidant properties and low water and oil absorptions. Furthermore, the DBC displayed a moisture isotherm typical of hygroscopic materials (type III). Emulsions containing ≥1.5% w/v of DBC are stable during 96 h of storage at 20 °C. Abstract

Nopal is a cactus plant widely consumed in Mexico that has been used in traditional medicine to aid in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. We previously showed that chronic consumption of dehydrated nopal ameliorated hepatic steatosis in obese (fa/fa) rats; however, description of the effects on other tissues is sparse. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of nopal cladode consumption on intestinal physiology, microbial community structure, adipose tissue, and serum biochemistry in diet-induced obese rats. Rats were fed either a normal fat (NF) diet or a HF diet containing 4% of dietary fiber from either nopal or cellulose for 6 weeks. Consumption of nopal counteracted HF-induced adiposity and adipocyte hypertrophy, and induced profound changes in intestinal physiology. Nopal consumption reduced biomarkers of intestinal inflammation (mRNA expression of IL-6) and oxidative stress (ROS), modfied gut microbiota composition, increasing microbial diversity and cecal fermentation (SCFA), and altered the serum metabolome. Interestingly, metabolomic analysis of dehydrated nopal revealed a high choline content, which appeared to generate high levels of serum betaine, that correlated negatively with hepatic triglyceride (TAG) levels. A parallel decrease in some of the taxa associated with the production of trimethylamine, suggest an increase in choline absorption and bioavailability with transformation to betaine. The latter may partially explain the previously observed effect of nopal on the development of hepatic steatosis. In conclusion, this study provides new evidence on the effects of nopal consumption on normal and HF-diet induced changes in the intestine, the liver and systemic metabolism.

Abstract

This article investigates whether sustainability labels for mutual funds in Europe provide consistent signals regarding funds' sustainable characteristics. Specifically, we assess the alignment of signals conveyed by third-party and self-declared labels. Among the first typology, we consider labels sponsored by government and nonprofit organizations (GNPOs) alongside Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ratings from commercial data vendors. The latter category includes the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) classification and an ESG-related name. Our findings indicate that equity funds with GNPO labels are more likely to exhibit top-tier ESG ratings and alignment with self-declared sustainability signals, namely Article 9 of SFDR and fund names. Furthermore, holding government and multiple GNPO labels is linked to other signals indicating higher sustainability standards. In addition, funds tend to experience an improvement in Morningstar globes after receiving a GNPO label, consistent with GNPO labels signaling funds of the high-quality type. The results regarding label alignment in fixed-income funds are less conclusive. Abstract

Background: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the adult female sand flea (Tunga penetrans). Dogs are considered important reservoirs of T. penetrans in Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the monthly insecticidal efficacy of a single oral administration of fluralaner at a dose of 10–18 mg/kg (Bravecto® 1-Month, also registered as Defenza® in some countries; MSD Animal Health) in dogs naturally infested with T. penetrans. Methods: This clinical trial was conducted in a rural community located in Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. A total of 64 dogs were selected and distributed in a completely randomized design between a treated group (TG) that received one single dose of Bravecto® 1-Month (Defenza®) and a negative control group (CG) that received no treatment. Each group was composed of 32 dogs. The evaluations took place on days 0, 7 ± 2, 14 ± 2, 21 ± 2, 28 ± 2, 35 ± 2, and 42 ± 2 post treatment, in which the dogs were inspected to evaluate the infestation stage and classify lesions associated with tungiasis. The primary efficacy was determined from the percentage of treated dogs free of fleas (stage II and III lesions) after administration of the formulation at each evaluation time. Secondary efficacy was based on the number of active lesions (stages II and III) in each group at each evaluation time. The clinical condition of the animals was defined based on the Severity Score for Acute Dog Tungiasis (SCADT), which is related to the number and severity of lesions. Results: The primary efficacy of the product was greater than 95.0% from days 7 to 21 and reached 100.0% between days 28 and 42, with a significant association between treatment and infestation decline (P < 0.025) between days 7 and 42. Secondary drug efficacy was greater than 99.9% from days 7 to 21, reaching 100.0% between days 28 and 42 (P < 0.05). The treated dogs also scored lower on the SCADT than the control animals did during the entire clinical evaluation period (P < 0.05). Conclusions: A single administration of Bravecto® 1-Month (Defenza®) was effective in eliminating Tunga penetrans infestations, as well as in preventing parasitism for at least 42 days after treatment. Abstract

Summary: This report outlines the diagnosis, surgical treatment and successful outcome following the treatment of a foal presented with a congenital abdominal hernia. A focal ventral abdominal swelling, enlarging since birth, starting just caudal to the intact umbilicus and extending caudally over the prepuce was observed. Once in dorsal recumbency, the hernia was found to originate from a defect of the abdominal wall in the linea alba region. A simple closed herniorrhaphy with inversion of the large peritoneal sac into the abdomen was performed. Post‐operative complications included fever with the development of an abscess at the surgical site. This was diagnosed and drained with ultrasound guidance. Based on culture and sensitivity testing of the abscess exudate, antibiotic therapy was adapted and the foal made a full recovery. A clinical examination undertaken 1 year later revealed complete healing of the linea alba. Herniation due to a muscle wall default has not been previously reported in foals. This article reviews the commonly observed causes of herniation (umbilical and inguinal hernias). However, a third type of congenital ventral body wall hernia should be considered for the differential diagnosis of swelling of the preputial area in foals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introdução: A humanização da saúde e dos cuidados significa o respeito e conforto à pessoa no seu todo. O enfermeiro tem um papel fundamental em olhar para a pessoa numa perpectiva holística, mais integrada e completa, não apenas numa perpectiva somente clinica e assistencial. Nesse sentido, cabe ao mesmo, entender todas as queixas e necessidades da pessoa doente e do cuidador de forma a intervir de um modo global, gentil e acolhedor. O cuidador deve ser um elemento ativo e presente no processo de internamento facilitando a ligação entre o enfermeiro e a pessoa doente. Objetivos: Manutenção dos cuidados englobando os cuidadores nos processos de saúde e doença de forma a promover a humanização dos cuidados permitindo, o equilibrio entre o bem-estar físico, controlo do sofrimento, conforto emocional, espiritual e cultural. Material e Métodos: Em circunstâncias especiais, o serviço de Medicina A, promove a permanência dos familiares e cuidadores de forma contínua sem restrições de horário e outros tipos de limitações. O serviço possui quartos de internamento individuais permitindo aos cuidadores, permanecer nos mesmos onde lhes é facultado uma cama junto da pessoa doente, de forma a este permanecer o tempo que desejar sendo providas todas as refeições diárias. É proporcionado apoio emocional, espiritual e cultural sempre que seja desejado. Resultados: Tanto a pessoa doente como o cuidador, sentem-se englobados na continuidade dos cuidados sentindo-se parte integrante do processo de internamento. Conclusões: A humanização dos cuidados é uma realidade diária no serviço onde a equipa está sensibilizado em agir de acordo com as necessidades identificadas da pessoa onde acreditamos que a nossa metodologia é benéfica e fundamental no processo de saúde e doença.

Abstract

Objective: The increased prevalence of childhood metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a public health issue. It has been shown that a dysregulated bile acid (BA) profile could be involved in the development of MetS, in which the gut microbiota could have a significant role in BA levels. This study aimed to evaluate differences in serum BA levels in children with and without MetS and whether these levels were associated with gut microbial composition. Methods: A total of 100 children aged 10 to 12 years were enrolled in this study, 42 children with MetS (cases) and 58 control participants. Serum BAs were measured by liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry and gut microbiota was determined by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Results: Children with MetS showed higher levels of total, secondary, and 12α‐hydroxylated BAs, as well as deoxycholic acid, and these were associated with dyslipidemia and insulin resistance markers. Interestingly, total BAs were negatively correlated with gut bacterial diversity (Shannon index: rho = −0.218, p = 0.035), whereas total, 12α‐hydroxylated, and secondary BAs, as well as deoxycholic acid, showed negative correlations with genera known for their potential health effects, including Bifidobacterium, Akkermansia, and Faecalibacterium. Conclusions: This study suggests that childhood MetS is associated with a dysregulated BA pool and that these alterations could influence the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria, thus contributing to gut microbial dysbiosis.
