El objetivo estriba en analizar la existencia de condiciones propicias para tomar y desarrollar clases a distancia y virtuales en el primer año de la pandemia. El sistema educativo bajo el confinamiento por la pandemia por Covid-19, estuvo a prueba en su capacidad de adaptación y respuesta. En el nivel superior se atendió la actividad docente con clases, en primer momento, a través de medios tecnológicos que estuvieron al alcance de docentes y alumnos; en un segundo momento, las instituciones de educación superior dispusieron de plataformas y un esquema más organizado. Sin embargo, los estudiantes tuvieron que cursar sus asignaturas a distancia o de manera virtual en condiciones poco idóneas, influyendo esto en la satisfacción en el aprendizaje, sobre todo en las áreas de salud, agropecuarias y en general en aquellas que exigen práctica en su preparación. La didáctica útil en la modalidad a distancia y en línea es aquella que se centra en la resolución de problemas.

En México se tomó la decisión de suspender las clases presenciales en las universidades, como medida preventiva para disminuir la probabilidad de que los estudiantes y profesores contrajeran el virus del COVID-19. El confinamiento ha tenido efectos psicosociales importantes en la vida de los profesores, que también han tenido desafíos y retos durante el trabajo remoto, ya que, son los comisionados del proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de los estudiantes, además, el regreso de manera gradual a clases presenciales significó para profesores un desafió más para su dinámica de trabajo lo que fue un detonante en ámbito emocional causando sentimientos como la ansiedad, estrés e incertidumbre, lo en algunos casos afectó en su desempeño laboral. Bajo ese panorama, el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar factores presentes en las dinámicas escolares de los profesores del Centro Universitario UAEM Amecameca como consecuencia de la emergencia sanitaria causada por el COVID-19.

La Revista Internacional de Estudios sobre Sistemas Educativos (RIESED) como journal electrónico “peer-reviewed” en este número 13, publicado en agosto del año 2022, centra su atención para dar cuenta de las experiencias de innovación en la gestión y práctica de la tarea educativa en las instituciones de educación superior durante la pandemia ocasionada por el SARS-CoV2. La emergencia sanitaria por este virus movió a las instituciones de educación superior en su capacidad reactiva, activa y proactiva para no suspender el servicio educativo a pesar del confinamiento, adaptar estrategias que permitieran no perder los cursos escolares. La huella manifiesta que la acción no tenía precedentes, de igual envergadura fue la innovación y creatividad de todos los actores de la docencia, del proceso enseñanza aprendizaje, para atender las funciones sustantivas de la universidad. Las lecciones impuestas por la pandemia han sido amplias, la respuesta y capacidad de las instituciones educativas es ejemplar y trascendental porque incluso ha abierto nuevos caminos y estrategias que incorporan en el sendero de una nueva normalidad post pandemia.

El Cerro Potosí (CPO) se caracteriza por un gradiente altitudinal de 2 200 a 3 719 m y por ser hábitat de diversas coníferas. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron: 1) generar una red dendrocronológica de Pinus culminicola, Pinus hartwegii, Pseudotsuga menziesii y Pinus greggii; 2) desarrollar una reconstrucción de lluvia estacional; y 3) determinar la influencia de fenómenos atmosféricos de circulación general sobre la variabilidad interanual y multianual de la precipitación en CPO. Para lograr esos objetivos, con métodos dendrocronológicos se generaron cuatro cronologías climáticamente sensitivas; la más extensa (1420-2010) fue de Pinus hartwegii, y las más corta (1850-2010), de Pinus greggii. La asociación entre series dendrocronológicas mostró una respuesta climática común y mediante componentes principales. Se integró una serie representativa de los diversos estratos de elevación, que cubre el período 1700-2010. Extra-skeletal osteosarcoma is a rare form of malignant soft tissue sarcoma. Its occurrence in the prostate gland is particularly uncommon. In this case report, we present a patient diagnosed with osteosarcoma arising within the prostatic gland. A 58-year-old man was initially diagnosed with Gleason 8 prostate acinar adenocarcinoma following a transurethral resection (TUR) of the prostate. This diagnosis was accompanied by locoregional involvement and multiple bone metastases. The patient underwent a treatment regimen including complete androgen blockade, chemotherapy, greenlight laser prostate vaporization, and palliative radiotherapy. After treatment, he achieved a complete biochemical response, and his bone metastases remained stable. However, at 16 months post-diagnosis, clinical follow-up by means of radiological examinations revealed an increase in the size of the prostatic lesion, along with additional infiltration of the tumor into the rectum and bladder walls. Remarkably, a mesenchymal tumor proliferation with intratumor calcifications was observed. A subsequent TUR biopsy of the prostate showed a malignant tumor spindle and ovoid cell proliferation with high-grade nuclear atypia, necrosis, and islets of osteoid formation, leading to a final diagnosis of high-grade prostatic extra-skeletal osteosarcoma. This paper aims to evaluate the driving style effects, through the construction of driving cycles, on the polluting gases, in the context of urban freight transportation. For this, the method used was the construction of cycles through the Vehicle Specific Power (VSP) parameter, which considers instantaneous vehicle and road parameters better to represent driving patterns and freight transportation's environmental impacts. The study was conducted in Fortaleza city, Ceará, Brazil, with a professional driver's group. The road types, land use and traffic light location were considered to analyze and discuss the results. The results show collector roads presented higher speeds than arterial roads, and the use of the land around the road also directly impacted vehicle driving patterns. Dual-species biofilms formed by Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus have high virulence and drug resistance. In this context, biosurfactants produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been widely studied, of which a new derivative (RLmix_Arg) stands out for possible application in formulations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibiofilm activity of RLmix_Arg, both alone and incorporated in a gel prepared with Pluronic F-127, against dual-species biofilms of fluconazole-resistant C. albicans (FRCA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in impregnated catheters. Broth microdilution tests, MTT reduction assays of mature biofilms, impregnation of RLmix_Arg and its gel in peripheral venous catheters, durability tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed. RLmix_Arg showed antimicrobial activity against Candida spp. and S. aureus , by reducing the cell viability of mixed biofilms of FRCA and MRSA, and preventing their formation in a peripheral venous catheter. The incorporation of this biosurfactant in the Pluronic F-127 gel considerably enhanced its antibiofilm activity. Thus, RLmix_Arg has potential application in gels for impregnation in peripheral venous catheters, helping to prevent development of dual-species biofilms of FRCA and MRSA.

DNIC can be formed in aqueous media in the absence of thiols via mechanisms that depend exclusively on Fe(II) and NO. However, these reactions do not take place at intracellular concentrations of Fe(II) and NO, reinforcing the relevance of thiols to assist Fe(II) to Fe(I) reduction during DNIC formation in biological media.

Background: Hispanics/Latinos are the largest racial/ethnic group among underrepresented populations in the U.S. and multiple sociodemographic, cultural, and linguistic factors have been found to impact their performances on cognitive testing. Despite this, few normative data are available for the heterogeneous Spanish-speaking population in the U.S., Objective: To generate normative data on the Trail-Making Test (TMT), Bells Test, Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and the Brief Test of Attention (BTA) for Spanish speakers residing in the U.S., Methods: The sample included 245 Spanish-speaking individuals aged 18- 80 from eight states across the U.S. (California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Wisconsin). Participants were administered attention and processing speed measures as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. We used a Bayesian regression approach to estimate normative data, including covariates found to be important for predicting performances on measures of attention and processing speed., Results: Sociodemographic factors including education, time in the U.S., acculturation, age, and/or sex had differential effects on the TMT-A, TMT-B, SDMT, and the BTA whereas the Bells Test was not influenced by any of these sociodemographic factors., Conclusion: Our findings indicate that while sex, age, and educational attainment are important factors to consider, language and acculturation can also influence attention and processing speed performances among Spanish speakers in the U.S.

Assessing cognition in this group is complex as cultural and linguistic factors have been found to affect test performance., Objective: To generate normative data on the World Health Organization-University of California Los Angeles Auditory Verbal Learning Test (WHO-UCLA AVLT) in a sample of Spanish-speaking Hispanics residing in the U.S., Methods: The sample included 245 Spanish-speaking individuals aged 18-80 across the U.S. (California, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Wisconsin). Participants were administered the WHO-UCLA AVLT as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. A Bayesian regression approach was used to estimate normative data, including covariates found to be important for predicting performances on measures of learning and memory., Results: Bayesian models showed a logarithmic link between education and all WHO-UCLA AVLT trials, except recognition. For delayed recall, increased Spanish proficiency benefited women's performance exclusively. Time in the U.S. was a significant predictor for total recall, indicating worse performance with longer residency., Conclusion: Recognizing cultural factors like language proficiency and duration of U.S. residence is essential for accurately evaluating cognitive function among Spanish-speaking Hispanics. This research emphasizes the importance of accounting for cultural nuances in developing norms for neuropsychological assessments, thereby improving their relevance and effectiveness in diverse communities.

Background: The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT) and the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) are commonly used in clinical practice. The ROCFT measures constructional praxis, visual perception, and visuospatial learning and memory, and the CDT assesses for visuospatial, constructional, and executive difficulties. Several neurological disorders are associated with visuospatial and visuo-constructional impairments, yet reliable normative data accounting for sociodemographic and acculturative variables are scarce for Hispanics living in the U.S., Objective: To generate normative data for the ROCFT and CDT in a Spanish-speaking adult population living in the U.S., Methods: The sample consisted of 245 cognitively healthy adults recruited from several states in the U.S. Each participant was administered the ROCFT and CDT as part of a larger cognitive battery. The ROCFT and CDT were normed using a Bayesian approach. Age, age2, education, sex, acculturation, and language proficiency were included as predictors in the analyses., Results: ROCFT performance was associated with education and age, particularly as they interacted with Spanish language proficiency and time spent in the U.S. Education was significantly associated with recall abilities and a lower memory recall on the ROCFT. Age was found to vary depending on a person's bilingual abilities. Sex did not emerge as a predictor of performance, and it did not interact significantly with other variables., Conclusion: This is the first study to include acculturation and language proficiency variables in the creation of norms for the assessment of visuo-constructional abilities. This study will have a large impact on the practice of neuropsychology in the U.S.

Improving breastfeeding rates is a global goal. To achieve it, actions targeting modifiable factors that influence the breastfeeding experience, such as maternal self-efficacy, could be a promising path, especially with preterm infants' mothers. Considering the current ubiquitous technology, we developed a mobile application for mothers of preterm infants to constitute a breastfeeding information and support platform. The study was developed in three phases: a survey to determine characteristics and preferences of preterm infants' mothers; the app development by an interdisciplinary team, following the principles of Disciplined Agile Delivery; and the face and content validation by 10 professionals. The app contains 80 screens and 11 strategies to address prematurity, lactation, breastfeeding, peer support, maternal emotions, resilience, and motivation. Nurses can apply their expertise by designing mHealth-based interventions, employing scientific evidence, and considering the interests and preferences of the target population. Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is a species of great cultural and economic importance in aquaculture in the Amazon region. Methionine is considered the first limiting sulfur amino acid in practical fish diets, which encourages investigating its use in diets for tambaqui. This study aimed to verify the digestible methionine plus cystine (Met + Cys) requirement in diets for tambaqui (89.52 ± 0.53 g) for 60 days. The treatments investigated were: 6.50, 7.80, 9.10, 10.40, 11.70, and 13.00 g Met + Cys kg diet -1 . The estimated requirement based on final weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and specific growth rate was 9.04, 8.92, 8.91, and 8.58 g Met + Cys kg diet -1 , respectively, while on body protein deposition, body fat deposition, body ash deposition, and nitrogen retention efficiency was 9.29, 9.20, 9.19, and 8.72 g Met + Cys kg diet -1 , respectively. Linear regression demonstrated that increased digestible Met + Cys in the diet decreased plasma total protein, globulin, and liver total protein levels. Quadratic regression showed that the highest value for liver glycogen was found with a 10.40 g Met + Cys kg diet -1 . Another quadratic regression demonstrated a lower hepatic aspartate aminotransferase (AST) enzymatic activity in fish fed between 7.80 and 11.70 g Met + Cys kg diet -1 . The different treatments did not influence the erythrogram. In conclusion, when considering an integrative view of the results for growth performance, whole-body deposition, and liver parameters without harming the physiological and metabolic status, we recommended choosing a diet with digestible Met + Cys between 8.58 and 9.29 g kg - 1 for tambaqui., (© 2023. The thermal environment is important in unit production because the perception of thermal stress can reduce fertility, and productive performance, therefore its management is necessary. The use of non-invasive methods, such as infrared thermography and real-time ultrasonography, are widely used to evaluate indicators in animal production, without the need to slaughter the animals. Thus, we aimed to assess the effect of the thermal environment on the physiological parameters and carcass characteristics of Dorper sheep with positive and negative residual feed intake (RFI) using infrared thermography and real-time ultrasonography techniques. Twenty uncastrated male Dorper sheep (17.8 ± 2.4 kg) were confined for 40 days for RFI classification. Sheep were separated into positive RFI (n = 10) and negative RFI (n = 10). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 2 thermal environments (full sun or shade) and two feed efficiency groups (positive RFI or negative RFI), with 5 replications. The sheep remained in confinement for 60 days. The animals were slaughtered at the end of the experiment and the carcasses dissected for tissue separation. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) were measured at two times (14:00 h and 18:00 h) for periods of 5 days. The RR was determined by indirect auscultation of heart sounds at the level of the laryngotracheal region. The RT was measured introduced a digital clinical thermometer into the animal's rectum. Surface temperature (ST) was obtained using a thermographic infrared camera, collecting the temperatures of the eyeball and skin surface in the regions of the head, ribs, rump, flank and shin. Sheep confined in full sun showed higher RR (P = 0.0001), ST ribs (P = 0.0020), ST rumb (P = 0.0055), ST flank (P = 0.0001) and heat tolerance coefficient (HTC) (P = 0.0010). For sheep confined in full sun, a strong correlation was observed between the RR and the mean ST (MST; r = 0.6826; P = 0.0236) and between the final loin eye area (LEAf) with the real LEA (LEAr) (r = 0.9263; P = 0.0001) and slaughter body weight (SBW) (r = 0.7532; P = 0.0325). For negative RFI sheep, a positive correlation was observed between the RR and the ST rump (r = 0.7343; P = 0.0025) and ST ribs (r = 0.6560; P = 0.0178) and the MST (r = 0.7435; P = 0.0001), between the MST and the LEAr (r = 0.6837; P = 0.0025) and the final LEA (r = 0.6771; P = 0.0144), and between the final LEA and LEAr (r = 0.9942; P = 0.0001), BW (r = 0.8415; P = 0.0277) and MST (r = 0.6771; P = 0.0045). Positive RFI sheep confined to shade showed a high correlation between final LEA and LEAr (r = 0.9372; P = 0.0001). Neurodegeneration is caused by the progressive loss of the structure and function of neurons, leading to cell death, and it is the main cause of many neurodegenerative diseases. Many molecules, such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), have been studied for their potential to prevent or treat these diseases. They are widespread in nature and perform an important role in neuritogenesis and neuroprotection. Here we investigated the neuritogenic and neuroprotective role of Phallusia nigra dermatan sulfate (PnD2,6S) and compared it with two distinct structures of chondroitin sulfate (C6S) and dermatan sulfate (D4S). For this study, a neuro 2A murine neuroblastoma cell line was used, and a chemical lesion was induced by the pesticide rotenone (ROT). We observed that PnD2,6S + ROT had a better neuritogenic effect than either C6S + ROT or D4S + ROT at a lower concentration (0.05 μg/mL). When evaluating the mitochondrial membrane potential, PnD2,6S showed a neuroprotective effect at a concentration of 0.4 μg/mL. These data indicate different mechanisms underlying this neuronal potential, in which the sulfation pattern is important for neuritogenic activity, while for neuroprotection all DS/CS structures had similar effects. In this work, we propose zinc oxide (ZnO) surface functionalization with plasmonic silver nanoparticles (AgNP) of different sizes and shapes (spheres, prisms, and rods) creating ZnO/AgNP nanohybrids. These were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Surface functionalization with AgNP improved photocatalyst electronic properties, its visible light absorption, and slow electron/hole recombination on the ZnO surface. Photocatalysis assays performed with a polychromatic Hg lamp degraded methyl orange, a model of persistent organic pollutant in water. A systematic study showed that the photodegradation kinetics of the nanohybrids are significantly more efficient than pure ZnO (up to 18 times) and that AgNP size and especially its shape are important in dye degradation. Mechanistic studies revealed that degradation occurred by direct dye reduction on the ZnO surface holes, ZnO electron transfer to Ag followed by •O 2 - formation, and direct injection of AgNP hot electrons in the ZnO conduction band. The last effect was stronger for anisotropic AgNP, which explains their high kinetic degradation rates. Therefore, the rational design in ZnO/AgNP nanohybrid engineering and a systematic approach used in this manuscript allowed a detailed description of photodegradation process that occur at ZnO/AgNP interface. Our results are not conclusive about AgNP size; on the other hand, it clearly demonstrates that anisotropic nanoparticles (as Ag rods and prims) present superior photodegradation efficiency and are promising particles for further large-scale use of solar-irradiated nanohybrids., (© 2023. Objective: To describe the distribution profile of thyroidectomies in Brazil from 2010 to 2020 from a macro-regional perspective., Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective, detailed and descriptive study built on secondary data obtained from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS). We organized the data in tables and grouped them according to the federative unit, macro-region, type of procedure, mortality rate, and year of performance. We performed statistical analysis using the χ 2 test to assess the association between the variables, observing a P value of < 0.05 and a confidence interval of 95%., Results: From 2010 to 2020, 160 219 thyroidectomy surgeries were performed, of which 77 812 (48.56%) were total, 38 064 (23.76%) partial and 41 191 (25.70%) oncological. The Southeast was responsible for the largest share of procedures, with 70 745 (44.15%), followed by the Northeast with 43 887 (27.39%). In 2020, the procedure was less performed, with 9226 (5.75%) surgeries. The total mortality rate was 0.16% during the study period., Conclusion: We found that thyroidectomies are carried out mainly in the Southeastern, Northeastern, and Southern regions, and showed a downward trend in 2020, which may be related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, total thyroidectomy is the most performed surgery, and the Northern region had the highest mortality rate.

Electronic structure calculations using the density-functional theory (DFT) have been performed to analyse the effect of water molecules and protonation on the heme group of peroxidases in different redox (ferric, ferrous, compounds I and II) and spin states. Shared geometries, spectroscopic properties at the Soret region, and the thermodynamics of peroxidases are discussed. B3LYP and M06-2X density functionals with different basis sets were employed on a common molecular model of the active site (Fe-centred porphine and proximal imidazole). Computed Gibbs free energies indicate that the corresponding aquo complexes are not thermodynamically stable, supporting the five-coordinate Fe(III) centre in native ferric peroxidases, with a water molecule located at a non-bonding distance. Protonation of the ferryl oxygen of compound II is discussed in terms of thermodynamics, Fe-O bond distances, and redox properties. It is demonstrated that this protonation is necessary to account for the experimental data, and computed Gibbs free energies reveal p K a values of compound II about 8.5-9.0. Computation indicates that the general oxidative properties of peroxidase intermediates, as well as their reactivity towards water and protons and Soret bands, are mainly controlled by the iron porphyrin and its proximal histidine ligand.

Background: Conventional preclinical models often miss drug toxicities, meaning the harm these drugs pose to humans is only realized in clinical trials or when they make it to market. This has caused the pharmaceutical industry to waste considerable time and resources developing drugs destined to fail. Organ-on-a-Chip technology has the potential improve success in drug development pipelines, as it can recapitulate organ-level pathophysiology and clinical responses; however, systematic and quantitative evaluations of Organ-Chips' predictive value have not yet been reported., Methods: 870 Liver-Chips were analyzed to determine their ability to predict drug-induced liver injury caused by small molecules identified as benchmarks by the Innovation and Quality consortium, who has published guidelines defining criteria for qualifying preclinical models. An economic analysis was also performed to measure the value Liver-Chips could offer if they were broadly adopted in supporting toxicity-related decisions as part of preclinical development workflows., Results: Here, we show that the Liver-Chip met the qualification guidelines across a blinded set of 27 known hepatotoxic and non-toxic drugs with a sensitivity of 87% and a specificity of 100%. We also show that this level of performance could generate over $3 billion annually for the pharmaceutical industry through increased small-molecule R&D productivity., Conclusions: The results of this study show how incorporating predictive Organ-Chips into drug development workflows could substantially improve drug discovery and development, allowing manufacturers to bring safer, more effective medicines to market in less time and at lower costs., (© 2022. Objective: To compare adverse perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with or without normalization of the mean pulsatility index (PI) uterine artery Doppler between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation., Methods: Retrospective cohort which pregnant women were divided into three groups: normal uterine artery Doppler between 20-24 and 26-28 weeks (controls), abnormal uterine artery Doppler between 20-24 and normal between 26-28 weeks (anUtA), and abnormal uterine artery Doppler between 20-24 and 26-28 weeks (aaUtA). To compare adverse perinatal results between the groups Chi-square test was used. Binary logistic regression was used to assess the ability of uterine artery Doppler to predict birthweight < 10th and composite perinatal outcomes., Results: Birthweight was significantly lower in the aaUtA compared to anUtA (2687 vs 3248 grams, p  = 0.0479). A significant negative correlation was observed between the mean PI uterine artery Doppler during the 3rd trimester and birthweight ( r = -0.13, R 2 = 0.035, p  = .0192). The prevalence of composite perinatal outcomes was significantly higher in aaUtA compared to anUtA (25.9 vs 0%, p  = .013). Mean PI uterine artery Doppler during the 3rd trimester was significant predictor for birthweight < 10th (OR: 2.74, CI 95% = 1.03-7.3), but the protodiastolic notch and the association between mean PI uterine artery Doppler and protodiastolic notch were not., Conclusion: Maintenance of altered uterine artery Doppler during the 3rd trimester was associated with higher prevalence of composite perinatal outcomes and lower birthweight compared to its late normalization. Although modest, uterine artery Doppler in the 3rd trimester proved to be predictor of birthweight < 10th.

Background: Varicose veins have become more common over recent years and in the most serious cases surgical treatment is necessary to resolve patients' clinical status. Despite their importance, there are no epidemiological studies that cover the whole of Brazil, showing how surgery to correct varicose veins conducted by the Unified Health System (SUS) is distributed in the country., Objectives: To describe the ecological profile of surgical treatment to correct varicose veins in Brazil from 2010 to 2020., Methods: This is a descriptive-analytical study of data obtained from the SUS Hospital Information System. These data were tabulated and categorized by state, region, type of procedure, and year. BioEstat 5.3 was used to conduct chi-square statistical tests with a 95% confidence interval and significance cutoff of p <0.05., Results: From 2010 to 2020, 755,752 surgical operations to treat varicose veins were conducted; 292,538 were unilateral (38.71%) and 463,214 (61.29%) were bilateral. Of these, 418,791 (55.41%) procedures were performed in the Southeast region, followed by 180,689 (23.91%) in the South region. A total of 40 deaths were registered in connection with these procedures during the period, 26 of which (65%) were associated with bilateral surgery and the majority of which occurred in the Southeast (24 deaths)., Conclusions: It was observed that the majority of procedures are performed in the Southeast and South regions, and that bilateral elective surgery is the most prevalent., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest: No conflicts of interest declared concerning the publication of this article., (Copyright© 2022 The authors.)

Most commercial products cannot be used for clearance of Mycoplasma contamination from cultures of apicomplexan parasites due to the parasites' dependence on the apicoplast, an essential organelle with DNA replication and translation machinery of cyanobacterial origin. The lone exception, mycoplasma removal agent (MRA), is relatively expensive, and some mycoplasma strains have shown resistance to clearance with MRA. Here, we report that the fluoroquinolone antibiotic sparfloxacin is a safe, effective, and inexpensive alternative for treatment of mycoplasma contamination in cultures of apicomplexan parasites. Sparfloxacin cleared both MRA-sensitive and MRA-resistant mycoplasma species from P. falciparum cultures at 1 and 4 μg/mL, respectively. We show that cultures of three different apicomplexan parasites can be maintained at concentrations of sparfloxacin required to clear mycoplasma without resulting in substantial deleterious effects on parasite growth. We also describe an alternative low-cost, in-house PCR assay for detecting mycoplasma. These findings will be useful to laboratories maintaining apicomplexan parasites in vitro , especially in low-resource environments, where the high cost of commercial products creates an economic barrier for detecting and eliminating mycoplasma from culture. Objective  To evaluate the effects of hydrolyzed collagen and collagen peptide in the treatment of superficial chondral lesions in rats. Method  This research employed 18 Rattus norvegicus . A single intraarticular infiltration of sodium iodoacetate (2 mg solution) through the patellar ligament induced joint damage in previously anesthetized animals. We divided the animals into three groups: a control group, a collagen peptide group, and a hydrolyzed collagen group. Treatment consisted of oral administration of collagen peptide or hydrolyzed collagen for 30 days. Afterwards, we euthanized the animals and studied the joint chondral changes. We evaluated the results according to the chondrocyte clusters count and a histological evaluation, as per Pritzker et al. Results  There was no statistical significance in injury stages between the control, hydrolyzed collagen, and collagen peptide groups ( p  = 0.11). Regarding scores, there was a statistical significance between the groups treated with hydrolyzed collagen and collagen peptide ( p  < 0.05), but not in comparison with the control group. The removal of emerging pollutants from municipal wastewater was studied for the first time using a three-step pilot-scale system: 1) hybrid digester (HD) as first step, 2) subsurface vertical flow constructed wetland (VF) as second step, and 3) photodegradation (PD) unit as third step or post-treatment. The HD and VF units were built and operated in series with effluent recirculation at pilot scale. For the PD post-treatment, three alternatives were studied at lab-scale, i) UVC irradiation at 254 nm (0.5 h exposure time), ii) UVA irradiation at 365 nm using a TiO 2 -based photocatalyst and iii) sunlight irradiation using a TiO 2 -based photocatalyst, the last two for 1 and 2 h. Alternative iii) was also tested at pilot-scale. Degradation of nine compounds was evaluated: acetaminophen (ACE), caffeine (CAF), carbamazepine (CBZ), ketoprofen (KET), ibuprofen (IBU), diclofenac (DCL), clofibric acid (ACB), bisphenol A (BPA), and sotalol (SOT). Overall, the HD-VF-UVC system completely removed (>99.5 %) ACE, CAF, KET, IBU, DCL and ACB, and to a lesser extent SOT (98 %), BPA (83 %) and CBZ (51 %). On the other hand, the HD-VF-UVA/TiO 2 system (at 2 h) achieved >99.5 % removal of ACE, CAF, KET, IBU and DCL while ACB, BPA, CBZ and SOT were degraded by 83 %, 81 %, 78 % and 68 %, respectively. Working also at 2 h of exposure time, in summer conditions, the HD-VF-Sol/TiO 2 system achieved >99.5 % removal of ACE, CAF, KET, IBU, DCL and ACB, and to a minor extent BPA (80 %), SOT (74 %) and CBZ (69 %). Similar results, although slightly lower for SOT (60 %) and CBZ (59 %), were obtained in the pilot sunlight plus TiO 2 catalyst unit. Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection has had a major impact on kidney transplant patients. Recent evidence suggests that solid organ transplant recipients who received mRNA vaccines reach low immunization rates. There are only few reports about the risk factors and severity of COVID-19 in these patients. Our single center experience describes the patient profile and disease evolution observed in this vulnerable group after inoculation., Material and Methods: Retrospective cohort study with kidney transplant patients who received a COVID-19 vaccine before testing positive for SARS-CoV-19 using polymerase chain reaction. Demographic characteristics and clinical information are described and compared with our previous series of patients who were infected before the initiation of the vaccination rollout., Results: Sixteen kidney transplant recipients diagnosed with COVID-19 after being vaccinated were included and compared with our previous series of 76 unvaccinated patients who were positive for COVID-19. No differences were found among risk factors such as age, time after transplant, hypertension, and obesity between groups (P value > .05). After COVID-19 diagnosis among inoculated patients, 10 patients were hospitalized, and 4 of who met the criteria for admission to the intensive care unit. Three patients died of COVID-19 complications. Despite this, the incidence of infections has decreased after vaccination rollout (P value < .05)., Conclusions: Patients' risk profiles remain constant among recipients who were positive for COVID-19 between waves. We did not find significant differences in hospitalization and severity rates in this reduced group of patients. Objective To analyze the clinicoepidemiological characteristics of pubalgia in athletes and to define the epidemiological profile of patients complaining of lower abdomen and groin pain at a specialized center. Methodology  We conducted a retrospective study based on a case series to evaluate the epidemiological profile of 245 athletes with pubalgia reported in their medical records from October 2015 to February 2018. The selected sample underwent a clinical evaluation, and the results were recorded through the application of a questionnaire. Results  The sample consisted of 245 patients aged between 14 and 75 years. Soccer and running were the most prevalent sports. Most subjects (58%) trained or played sports 3 or more days a week. After evaluating specific sports movements, symptoms worsened in 24% of the patients when changing direction; in 23%, when kicking; in 22%, during sprints and speed training; in 17%, during long runs; and in 14%, when jumping. Pain during intercourse was reported by 13% of the patients. For most subjects (80%), the inguinal region, the adductor muscles, and the pubis (midline) were the main pain sites. The tests involving adductor contraction against resistance with an extended knee was positive in 77.6% of the patients, and the one involving simultaneous hip and abdomen flexion against resistance was positive in 76.7% of the sample. Conclusion  The present study has demonstrated the predominance of pubalgia in male patients who play soccer and practice running. In most cases (80%), pain occurred in the inguinal region, the adductor muscles, and the pubis. The paper describes a theoretical analysis of the adsorption of nicotinamide and propranolol onto a magnetic-activated carbon (MAC). For a better evaluation of the adsorption mechanism, adsorption isotherms expressing the variation of the adsorption capacity as function of adsorbate concentration were determined at different temperatures ranging from 20 to 45 °C. For both the analytes, experimental tests reveal that adsorption capacity increases with temperature. An advanced multi-layer model derived from the statistical physics is set for the interpretation of the entire adsorption data set. The modelling results show that the propranolol molecules change their adsorption orientation from a mixed (parallel and non-parallel) orientation to a multimolecular process. For nicotinamide, the aggregation of molecules is practically absent, except for the data at lower temperatures. The model allows stating that the adsorption of both the pharmaceutical compounds occurs via the formation of one or two layers on MAC adsorbent, the propranolol showing a higher tendency to form multiple layers. Finally, adsorption energy is estimated suggesting that the adsorption is endothermic and physical interactions are the responsible of the adsorption of both the compounds onto MAC adsorbent., (© 2022. Objective: To describe the population of patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in terms of cleft phenotypes, gender, age, ethnic group, family history, clinical presentation (syndromic vs nonsyndromic), some environmental and behavioral factors, and some clinical features., Design: Descriptive retrospective study., Setting: Patients attending the genetics counseling practice in Operation Smile Foundation, Bogotá, Colombia, for over 8 years., Participants: No screening was conducted. All patients requiring clinical genetics assessment in Operation Smile Foundation were included in the study., Results: Left cleft lip and palate (CLP) and nonsyndromic forms were the most frequent types of malformations in this population. Psychomotor retardation and heart disease were the most frequent comorbidities in these patients. A low proportion of mothers exposed to passive smoking during pregnancy was observed and low birth weight accounted for an important number of cases. Aarskog, velocardiofacial, and orofaciodigital syndromes were the most frequent syndromic forms of CLP in this population., Conclusions: In this study, the most frequent type of CL/P was the nonsyndromic complete left CLP. Aarskog, velocardiofacial, and orofaciodigital syndromes were the most frequent syndromic forms of CL/P in this population.

Introduction: Cirrhosis affects liver functions and compromises much of the body's organs. The significant increase in chronic diseases, including cirrhosis, has led to changes in medical practice and health systems, leading the informal caregiver to play a major role because of family ties or some level of proximity to the patient, assuming daily care function. However, the burden generated by informal caregivers for uninterrupted care is present at different levels (physical, mental, social, professional, and financial) and even in the prognosis of the patient., Objective: The present study aims to evaluate the impact of stressors and overload on informal caregivers of cirrhosis patients., Method: Cross-sectional study, conducted with 54 informal caregivers of cirrhosis patients, followed up at the Liver Transplant Service Outpatient Clinic of the University of São Paulo School of Medicine Hospital das Clínicas, where they had access to a sociodemographic questionnaire, history of the patient's disease and the scale Burden Scale for Family Caregivers., Results: It was observed that higher levels of education and income of the caregiver correlates with a lower degree of stress. In addition, there is a significant difference found in the caregiver's age variable, which indicates that the youngest are those who have the highest degree of stress. The variable Na mEg/l of the patient also presents a statistically significant difference., Conclusion: Our study was a precursor using the BSFC scale of worldwide coverage and that had not yet been applied in any study in Brazil, thus allowing a look at the various aspects that affect the quality of life of caregivers of patients with cirrhosis. Our results and the literature corroborate the importance not only of the patient, but also the informal caregiver's health.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a myeloid-lineage restricted enzyme largely expressed in the azurophilic granules of neutrophils. It catalyses the formation of reactive oxygen species, mainly hypochlorous acid, contributing to anti-pathogenic defense. Disorders in the production or regulation of MPO may lead to a variety of health conditions, mainly of inflammatory origin, including autoimmune inflammation. We have studied the effect of ionizing radiation on the activity of MPO, as measured by the capacity retained by the enzyme to produce hypochlorous acid as reactive oxygen species after exposure to successive doses of solvated electrons, the strongest possible one-e - reducing agent in water. Chlorination activity was still present after a very high irradiation dose, indicating that radiation damage does not take place at the active site, hindered in the core of MPO structure. Decay kinetics show a dependence on the wavelength, supporting that the process must occur at peripheral functional groups situated on external and readily accessible locations of the enzyme. These results are relevant to understand the mechanism of resistance of our innate anti-pathogenic defense system and also to get insight into potential strategies to regulate MPO levels as a therapeutic target in autoimmune diseases., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are incredibly versatile nanostructures that more recently have been exploited to create advanced optoelectronic materials due enhancement of local magnetic field after its irradiation. However, the use of AgNPs as nanoantennas to amplify photophysical properties of close photosensitizer (PS) molecules in photodynamic therapy is still underexplored. The reason for that is the difficulty to control crucial parameters such as silver-PS distance in aqueous solution. In this scenario, here we propose a nanohybrid system where AgNP/PS distance is controlled by a thin layer of different Pluronic copolymers. The controllable distance and aqueous stability of proposed nanohybrids allow a tunable enhancement of fluorescence emission and singlet oxygen generation of some selected PS molecules. A detailed mechanism investigation demonstrated that the observed metal-enhanced photophysics is due to magnetic field enhancement close to AgNP surface (AgNP/PS distance-controlled effect) and the resonant coupling of AgNP hot electrons and HOMO-LUMO energies of the PS (AgNP/PS spectral overlap-controlled effect). These results show that the rational design in engineering new nanohybrid structures allowed photophysical improvement of PS molecules in aqueous solution in a tunable way and point out Pluronic-based AgNP/PS nanohybrids as a smart material for further developments aiming at theranostic applications in photodynamic therapy., (© 2021 American Society for Photobiology.)

Background: There is a dearth of studies conducted to understand the socio-professional profile of the vascular surgery specialty and the population demands of specific regions, which are needed to support creation of care policies and direct infrastructure improvements in healthcare., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the socio-professional profile of vascular surgeons in the state of Pará, Brazil, to guide creation of tools for professional improvement., Methods: A cross-sectional, self-report survey was conducted in Pará using a questionnaire comprising 30 questions covering six main topics., Results: All vascular surgeons actively practicing in the state participated in this study. The total number of specialists was 59, with 71.2% working in the greater Belém area and 16.9% exclusively practicing in the interior of the state. The mean age of these professionals was 48 ± 11.1 years, 86.4% of respondents were men, 64.4% of surgeons had completed medical residency, and 96.6% (n=57) of the surgeons would like to improve their skills in venous surgery, echo-guided vascular access, and endovascular surgery. The method of professional improvement of greatest interest was simulation courses (hands-on), endorsed by 93% of the participants., Conclusions: Pará has 59 vascular surgeons. These professionals mainly work in the greater Belém (71.2%), in hospitals (100%) or in private clinics or offices (94.9%), performing a wide range of procedures, including venous and arterial surgery, amputations, and provision of hemodialysis access. More than 90% of these surgeons were satisfied professionally and reported that they would choose the specialty again. However, 22% had a pessimistic view of the specialty's future.
