For correction of dentofacial deformities, orthosurgical treatment is recommended and often involves bi-maxillary orthognathic surgery. The chin area is an important key for a harmonious facial profile and plays an important role. The present case (of a 38-year-old female) describes one successful surgical-orthodontic treatment. The treatment consisted of the use of an Edgewise fixed appliance (0.022"X0.028"), mini Wing osteotomy (mWo), correction of the deviated nasal septum, and rhinoplasty. The treatment resulted in a better facial harmony and aesthetic with greater definition and lengthening of the submental region, adipose tissue elimination, and an upturned nose due to the correction of the deviated nasal septum associated with rhinoplasty. The Class I canine and molar relationship, the upper and lower midlines coincident with the facial midline, and the compensatory projection of the lower incisors were maintained. A satisfactory overbite and overjet, and leveled curve of Spee were obtained. In conclusion, the orthodontic treatment associated with mWo, correction of the deviated nasal septum, and rhinoplasty surgery provided satisfactory functional and aesthetic results. Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the fractal dimension, lacunarity, trabecular microarchitecture parameters, and cortical linear measurements in the mandibles of male and female individuals to identify differences between them. Materials and Methods: In total, 116 cone-beam computed tomography scans of healthy individuals of different ages (57 men and 59 women, aged between 20 and 60 years) were selected. The following bone parameters were measured: 1) buccal, lingual, and basal cortical bone thickness in 5 standard parasagittal sections (the midline, the left and right sides of the lower lateral incisors, and the left and right sides of the lower canines); 2) the bone volume fraction of 10 sequential axial sections from each patient by creating a volume of interest in the area between the lower canines; and 3) fractal dimension and lacunarity using grayscale images of the same region of the volume of interest in the anterior mandible. Spearman correlation coefficients and the Mann-Whitney test were used. Results: A significant and positive correlation was found between age and cortical thickness, especially in the region of the central incisors. Significant differences between sexes in terms of fractal dimension, lacunarity, and bone volume were found. Women revealed lower fractal dimension values and higher lacunarity and bone volume ratio values than men. Conclusion: Fractal dimension, lacunarity, trabecular bone volume, and cortical thickness were different between men and women of different ages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Facial orthopaedic treatments based on the stimulation or restrictions of craniofacial bone growth are more effective when carried out during the pubertal growth spurt. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the reproducibility of two cervical vertebrae methods (CVM) with manual tracing and direct visual inspection. Methods: A sample of 60 lateral cephalometric radiographs (10 of each of the 6 CVM stages) was randomly selected from 171 records. 5 orthodontists classified these radiographs according to the skeletal maturation stage in 2002 and 2005, and the application of both methods was conducted by direct visual inspection and evaluation through manual tracing. Results: The average reliability of the two methods determination and the two forms of evaluation was substantial. The direct visual inspection evaluation showed the highest reliability and agreement interexaminer values for both methods, as well as the intraexaminers evaluation. Conclusion: The reproducibility of CVM method was substantial, indicating its clinical use to determine the skeletal maturity and the ideal moment for treatment execution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
