Search

The mass of galaxy clusters is a critical quantity for probing cluster cosmology and testing theories of gravity, but its measurement could be biased given assumptions are inevitable. In this paper, we employ and compare two mass proxies for galaxy clusters: thermodynamics of the intracluster medium and kinematics of member galaxies. We select 22 galaxy clusters from the cluster catalog in the first SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Survey (eRASS1) that have sufficient optical and near-infrared observations. We generate multi-band images in the energy range of (0.3, 7) keV for each cluster, and derive their temperature profiles, gas mass profiles and hydrostatic mass profiles using a parametric approach that does not assume dark matter halo models. With spectroscopically confirmed member galaxies collected from multiple surveys, we numerically solve the spherical Jeans equation for their dynamical mass profiles. Our results quantify the correlation between dynamical mass and line-of-sight velocity dispersion with an rms scatter of 0.14 dex. We find the two mass proxies lead to roughly the same total mass, with no observed systematic bias. As such, the $\sigma_8$ tension is not specific to hydrostatic mass or weak lensing shears, but also appears with galaxy kinematics. We also compare our hydrostatic masses with the latest weak lensing masses inferred with scaling relations. The comparison shows the weak lensing mass is significantly higher than our hydrostatic mass by $\sim$110%. This might explain the significantly larger value of $\sigma_8$ from the latest measurement using eRASS1 clusters than almost all previous estimates in the literature. Finally, we test the radial acceleration relation (RAR) established in disk galaxies. We aim to participate in the calibration of the X-ray photon count rate to halo mass scaling relation of galaxy clusters selected in the first eROSITA All-Sky Survey on the Western Galactic Hemisphere (eRASS1) using KiDS-1000 weak-lensing (WL) data. We measure the radial shear profiles around eRASS1 galaxy clusters using background galaxies in KiDS-1000, as well as the cluster member contamination. Furthermore we provide consistency checks with the other stage-III WL surveys who take part in the eRASS1 mass calibration, DES Y3 and HSC-Y3. We determine the cluster member contamination of eRASS1 clusters present in KiDS-1000 based on source number density profiles, where we account for the obscuration caused by cluster galaxies. The extracted shear profiles, together with the contamination model and the lens sample selection, are then analysed through a Bayesian population model. We calibrate the WL mass bias parameter by analysing realistic synthetic shear profiles from mock cluster catalogues. Our consistency checks between KiDS-1000 and DES Y3 & HSC-Y3 include the comparison of contamination-corrected density contrast profiles employing the union of background sources around common clusters, as well as the individual scaling relation results. We present a global contamination model for eRASS1 clusters in KiDS-1000 and the calibration results of the X-ray photon count rate to halo mass relation. The results of the WL mass bias parameter show that the uncertainty of the multiplicative shear bias dominates the systematic error budget at low clusters redshifts while the uncertainty of our contamination model does at high ones. The cross-checks between the three WL surveys show that they are statistically consistent with each other. This enables for the first time cosmological constraints from clusters calibrated by three state-of-the-art WL surveys. (abridged), Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures

Aims. We aim to characterize the gas properties in the cluster outskirts ($R_{500}R_{200}$) of the A3391/95 system and to compare them to predictions. Methods. We performed X-ray image and spectral analyses using the eROSITA PV data to assess the gas morphology and properties in the outskirts and the filaments in the directions of the previously detected Northern and Southern Filament of the A3391/95 system. We took particular care of the foreground. Results. In the filament-facing outskirts of A3391 and the Northern Clump, we find higher temperatures than typical cluster outskirts profiles, with a significance of $1.6-2.8\sigma$, suggesting heating due to their connections with the filaments. We confirm SB excess in the profiles of the Northern, Eastern, and Southern Filaments. From spectral analysis, we detect hot gas of ~1 keV for the Northern and Southern Filaments. The filament metallicities are below 10% solar metallicity and the $n_e$ range between 2.6 and $6.3\times10^{-5}~\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$. The characteristic properties of the Little Southern Clump (~1.5$R_{200}$ from A3395S in the Southern Filament) suggest that it is a small galaxy group. Excluding the LSC from the analysis of the Southern Filament decreases the gas density by 30%. This shows the importance of taking into account any clumps to avoid overestimation of the gas measurement in the outskirts and filament regions. Conclusions. The $n_e$ of the filaments are consistent with the WHIM properties as predicted by cosmological simulations, but the temperatures are higher, close to the upper WHIM temperature limit. As both filaments are short and located in a denser environment, stronger gravitational heating may be responsible for this temperature enhancement. We develop a neural network based pipeline to estimate masses of galaxy clusters with a known redshift directly from photon information in X-rays. Our neural networks are trained using supervised learning on simulations of eROSITA observations, focusing in this paper on the Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS). We use convolutional neural networks which are modified to include additional information of the cluster, in particular its redshift. In contrast to existing work, we utilize simulations including background and point sources to develop a tool which is usable directly on observational eROSITA data for an extended mass range from group size halos to massive clusters with masses in between $10^{13}M_\odot

X-ray observations of galaxy clusters are impacted by the presence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in a manner that is challenging to quantify, leading to biases in the detection and measurement of cluster properties for both astrophysics and cosmological applications. We detect and characterise clusters contaminated by central AGNs within the XXL survey footprint and provide a systematic assessment of the cosmological impact of such systems in X-ray cluster samples. We introduce a new automated class for AGN-contaminated (AC) clusters in the XXL source detection pipeline. The majority of these systems are otherwise missed by current X-ray cluster-detection methods. The AC selection is also effective in distinguishing AGN and cool-core presence using supplementary optical and infrared information. We present 33 AC objects, including 25 clusters in the redshift range, $0.14 \leq z \leq 1.03$, and eight other sources with significantly peaked central profiles. Six of these are new confirmed clusters. We computed the missed fraction of the XXL survey, which is defined as the fraction of genuine clusters that are undetected due to their centrally peaked X-ray profiles. We report seven undetected AC clusters above $z > 0.6$, in the range where X-ray cluster detection efficiency drops significantly. The missed fraction is estimated to be at the level of $5\%$ for the 50 square-degree XXL area. The impact on cosmological estimates from missed clusters is negligible for XXL, but it produces a tension of $\sim 3\sigma$ with the fiducial cosmology when considering larger survey areas. Looking towards surveys such as eROSITA and \textit{Athena}, larger areas and increased sensitivity will significantly enhance cluster detection, and therefore robust methods for characterising AGN contamination will be crucial for precise cluster cosmology, particularly in the redshift $z > 1$ regime., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures (33 images of AC objects presented in the appendix), 3 tables. There is a known tension between cosmological parameter constraints obtained from the primary CMB and those from galaxy cluster samples. One possible explanation could be certain types of groups or clusters of galaxy have been missed in the past. We aim to search for galaxy groups and clusters with particularly extended surface brightness distributions, by creating a new X-ray selected catalog of extended galaxy clusters from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, using a dedicated algorithm optimized for extended sources. Through extensive simulations, the detection efficiency and sample purity are investigated. Previous cluster catalogs in X-ray and other wave-bands, as well as spectroscopic and photometric redshifts of galaxies are used for the cluster identification. We report a catalog of galaxy clusters at high galactic latitude based on the ROSAT All-sky Survey, named as RXGCC, which includes 944 groups and clusters. Out of it, 641 clusters have been identified through ICM emission previously (Bronze), 154 known optical and infrared clusters are detected as X-ray clusters for the first time (Silver), and 149 identified as clusters for the first time (Gold). Based on 200 simulations, the contamination ratio of the detections which were identified as clusters by ICM emission, and the detections which were identified as optical and infrared clusters in previous work is 0.008 and 0.100, respectively. Compared with Bronze sample, the Gold+Silver sample is less luminous, less massive, and has a flatter surface brightness profile. Specifically, the median flux in [0.1-2.4]keV band for Gold+Silver and Bronze sample is 2.496e-12 erg/s/cm^2 and 4.955e-12 erg/s/cm^2, respectively. The median slope of cluster profile is 0.76 and 0.83 for Gold+Silver and Bronze sample, respectively. The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS), executed during the performance verification phase of the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG)/eROSITA telescope, was completed in Nov. 2019. One of the science goals of this survey is to demonstrate the ability of eROSITA to detect samples of clusters and groups at the final depth of the eROSITA all-sky survey. Because of the sizeable point-spread function of eROSITA, high-redshift clusters of galaxies or compact nearby groups hosting bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be misclassified as point sources by the source detection algorithms. We investigate the scaling relations between X-ray observables of the clusters detected in the eFEDS field using Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma/eROSITA observations taking into account the selection effects and the distributions of observables with cosmic time. We extract X-ray observables (Lx, Lbol, T, Mgas, Yx) within R500 for the sample of 542 clusters in the eFEDS field. By applying detection and extent likelihoods, we construct a subsample of 265 clusters with a contamination level of <10% (including AGNs and spurious fluctuations) to be utilized in the scaling relation analysis. The selection function based on the state-of-the-art simulations of the eROSITA sky is fully accounted for in our work. We provide the X-ray observables in the core-included 3sigma confidence level however, our results are in good agreement with the simulations including non-gravitational physics and the recent results that take into account selection effects. Strong deviations we find from the self-similar scenario indicate that the non-gravitational effects play an important role in shaping the observed physical state of clusters. The eFEDS survey is a proof-of-concept mini-survey designed to demonstrate the survey science capabilities of SRG/eROSITA. It covers an area of 140 square degrees where 542 galaxy clusters have been detected out to a redshift of 1.3. The eFEDS field is partly embedded in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) S19A data release, which covers 510 square degrees, containing approximately 36 million galaxies. This galaxy catalogue is used to construct a sample of 180 shear-selected galaxy clusters. In the common area to both surveys, about 90 square degrees, we investigate the effects of selection methods in the galaxy cluster detection by comparing the X-ray selected, eFEDS, and the shear-selected, HSC-SSP S19A, galaxy cluster samples. There are 25 shear-selected clusters in the eFEDS footprint. The relation between X-ray bolometric luminosity and weak-lensing mass is investigated, and it is found that the normalization of the bolometric luminosity and mass relation of the X-ray selected and shear-selected samples is consistent within $1\sigma$. Moreover, we found that the dynamical state and merger fraction of the shear-selected clusters is not different from the X-ray selected ones. Four shear-selected clusters are undetected in X-rays. A close inspection reveals that one is the result of projection effects, while the other three have an X-ray flux below the ultimate eROSITA detection limit. Finally, 43% of the shear-selected clusters lie in superclusters. Our results indicate that the scaling relation between X-ray bolometric luminosity and true cluster mass of the shear-selected cluster sample is consistent with the eFEDS sample. We present the first weak-lensing mass calibration and X-ray scaling relations of galaxy clusters and groups selected in the $eROSITA$ Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) observed by Spectrum Roentgen Gamma/$eROSITA$ over a contiguous footprint with an area of $\approx140$ deg$^2$, using the three-year (S19A) weak-lensing data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. In this work, a sample of $434$ optically confirmed galaxy clusters (and groups) at redshift $0.01\lesssim z \lesssim1.3$ with a median of $0.35$ is studied, of which $313$ systems are uniformly covered by the HSC survey to enable the extraction of the weak-lensing shear observable. In a Bayesian population modelling, we perform a blind analysis for the weak-lensing mass calibration by simultaneously modelling the observed count rate $\eta$ and the shear profile $g$ of individual clusters through the count rate-to-mass-and-redshift ($\eta$--$M_{500}$--$z$) and weak-lensing mass-to-mass-and-redshift ($M_{\mathrm{WL}}$--$M_{500}$--$z$) relations, respectively, while accounting for the bias in these observables using simulation-based calibrations. As a result, the count rate-inferred and lensing-calibrated cluster mass is obtained from the joint modelling of the scaling relations, as the ensemble mass spanning a range of $10^{13}h^{-1}M_{\odot}\lesssim M_{500}\lesssim10^{15} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ with a median of $\approx10^{14} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ for the eFEDS sample. With the mass calibration, we further model the X-ray observable-to-mass-and-redshift relations, including the rest-frame soft-band and bolometric luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X}}$ and $L_{\mathrm{b}}$), the emission-weighted temperature $T_{\mathrm{X}}$, the mass of intra-cluster medium $M_{\mathrm{g}}$, and the mass proxy $Y_{\mathrm{X}}$, which is the product of $T_{\mathrm{X}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{g}}$. We investigated the origin and gas properties of a simulated galaxy cluster pair, to connect simulation predictions to the SRG/eROSITA X-ray observations of the Abell 3391/95 field. The simulated system has been extracted from the (352 cMpc/h)^3 volume of the Magneticum Pathfinder cosmological simulations at z=0.07. We tracked back in time the main progenitors of the pair clusters and surrounding groups to study the assembly history of the system and its evolution. Similarly to the observed A3391/95 system, the simulated pair is embedded in a complex network of gas filaments, with structures aligned over more than 20 projected Mpc and the whole region collapsing towards the central overdense node. The spheres of influence (3*R200) of the two main clusters already overlap at z=0.07, but their virial boundaries are still physically separated. The diffuse gas located in the interconnecting bridge closely reflects the WHIM, with typical temperature of ~1 keV and overdensity $\sim 100$, with respect to the mean baryon density of the Universe, and lower enrichment level compared to the ICM in clusters. We find that most of the bridge gas collapsed from directions roughly orthogonal to the intra-cluster gas accretion directions, and its origin is mostly unrelated to the two cluster progenitors. We find clear signatures in the surrounding groups of infall motion towards the pair, such as significant radial velocities and slowdown of gas compared to dark matter. These findings further support the picture of the Northern Clump (MCXC J0621.7-5242) cluster infalling along a cosmic gas filament towards Abell 3391, possibly merging with it. We conclude that, in such a configuration, the pair clusters of the A3391/95-like system are in a pre-merger phase, and did not interact yet. The eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite has started to detect new X-ray sources over the full sky at an unprecedented rate. Understanding the performance and selection function of the source detection is important for the subsequent scientific analysis of the eROSITA catalogs. Through simulations, we test and optimize the eROSITA source detection procedures, and we characterize the detected catalog quantitatively. Taking the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) as an example, we ran extensive photon-event simulations based on our best knowledge of the instrument characteristics, the background spectrum, and the population of astronomical X-ray sources. We introduce a method of analyzing source detection completeness, purity, and efficiency based on the origin of each photon. According to the source detection efficiency measured in the simulation, we chose a two-pronged strategy to build eROSITA X-ray catalogs, creating a main catalog using only the most sensitive band (0.2-2.3 keV) and an independent hard-band-selected catalog using multiband detection in a range up to 5 keV. Because our mock data are highly representative of the real eFEDS data, we used the mock catalogs to measure the completeness and purity of the eFEDS catalogs as a function of multiple parameters, such as detection likelihood, flux, and luminosity. These measurements provide a basis for choosing the eFEDS catalog selection thresholds. The mock catalogs (available with this paper) can be used to construct the selection function of active galactic nuclei and galaxy clusters. (abridged version) We present a detailed spectroscopic and timing analysis of X-ray observations of the bright radio-to-gamma-ray emitting pulsar PSR B0656+14, which were obtained simultaneously with eROSITA and XMM-Newton during the Calibration and Performance Verification phase of the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission (SRG) for 100 ks. Using XMM-Newton and NICER we firstly established an X-ray ephemeris for the time interval 2015 to 2020, which connects all X-ray observations in this period without cycle count alias and phase shifts. The mean eROSITA spectrum clearly reveals an absorption feature originating from the star at 570 eV with a Gaussian sigma of about 70 eV, tentatively identified earlier in a long XMM-Newton observation (Arumugasamy et al. 2018). A second absorption feature, described here as an absorption edge, occurs at 260-265 eV. It could be of atmospheric or of instrumental origin. These absorption features are superposed on various emission components, phenomenologically described as the sum of hot (120 eV) and cold (65 eV) blackbody components, both of photospheric origin, and a power-law with photon index Gamma=2. The phase-resolved spectroscopy reveals that the Gaussian absorption line at 570 eV is clearly present throughout ~60% of the spin cycle. The visibility of the line strength coincides in phase with the maximum flux of the hot blackbody. We also present three families of model atmospheres: a magnetised atmosphere, a condensed surface, and a mixed model, which were applied to the mean observed spectrum and whose continuum fit the observed data well. The atmosphere model, however, predicts too short distances. The first massive galaxy groups in the Universe are predicted to have formed at redshifts well beyond two. Baryonic physics, like stellar and active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback in this very active epoch, are expected to have left a strong imprint on the thermo-dynamic properties of these early galaxy groups. Therefore, observations of these groups are key to constrain the relative importance of these physical processes. However, current instruments are not sensitive enough to detect them easily and characterize their hot gas content. In this work, we quantify the observing power of the Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics (Athena), the future large X-ray observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA), for discovering and characterizing early galaxy groups at high redshifts. We used the SImulation of X-ray TElescopes (SIXTE) simulator to mimic Athena observations, and a custom-made wavelet-based algorithm to detect galaxy groups and clusters in the redshift range $0.5 \le z \le 4$. We performed extensive X-ray spectral fitting in order to characterize their gas temperature and X-ray luminosity. We also investigate how well Athena will constrain different feedback mechanisms. In the deep Wide Field Imager (WFI) survey expected to be carried out during part of Athena's first four years (the nominal mission lifetime) more than 10,000 galaxy groups and clusters at $z\ge 0.5$ will be discovered. We find that Athena can detect $\sim20$ high-redshift galaxy groups with masses of $M_{500}\geq$ $5\times 10^{13}$ $M_{\odot}$ and $z\geq2$, and almost half of them will have a gas temperature determined to a precision of $\Delta T/T \le 25\%$. We demonstrate that high-redshift galaxy groups can be detected very efficiently as extended sources by Athena and that a key parameter determining the total number of such newly discovered sources is the area on the sky surveyed by Athena., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission will measure the position and properties of about 100,000 clusters of galaxies and 3 million active galactic nuclei over the full sky. To study the statistical properties of this ongoing survey, it is key to estimate the selection function accurately. We create a set of full sky light-cones using the MultiDark and UNIT dark matter only N-body simulations. We present a novel method to predict the X-ray emission of galaxy clusters. Given a set of dark matter halo properties (mass, redshift, ellipticity, offset parameter), we construct an X-ray emissivity profile and image for each halo in the light-cone. We follow the eROSITA scanning strategy to produce a list of X-ray photons on the full sky. We predict scaling relations for the model clusters, which are in good agreement with the literature. The predicted number density of clusters as a function of flux also agrees with previous measurements. Finally, we obtain a scatter of 0.21 (0.07, 0.25) for the X-ray luminosity -- mass (temperature -- mass, luminosity -- temperature) model scaling relations. We provide catalogues with the model photons emitted by clusters and active galactic nuclei. Galaxy clusters appear as extended sources in XMM-Newton images, but not all extended sources are clusters. So, their proper classification requires visual inspection with optical images, which is a slow process with biases that are almost impossible to model. We tackle this problem with a novel approach, using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), a state-of-the-art image classification tool, for automatic classification of galaxy cluster candidates. We train the networks on combined XMM-Newton X-ray observations with their optical counterparts from the all-sky Digitized Sky Survey. Our data set originates from the X-CLASS survey sample of galaxy cluster candidates, selected by a specially developed pipeline, the XAmin, tailored for extended source detection and characterisation. Our data set contains 1 707 galaxy cluster candidates classified by experts. Additionally, we create an official Zooniverse citizen science project, The Hunt for Galaxy Clusters, to probe whether citizen volunteers could help in a challenging task of galaxy cluster visual confirmation. The project contained 1 600 galaxy cluster candidates in total of which 404 overlap with the expert's sample. The networks were trained on expert and Zooniverse data separately. The CNN test sample contains 85 spectroscopically confirmed clusters and 85 non-clusters that appear in both data sets. Our custom network achieved the best performance in the binary classification of clusters and non-clusters, acquiring accuracy of 90 %, averaged after 10 runs. One key ingredient in using galaxy clusters (GCs) as a precision cosmological probe in large X-ray surveys is to understand selection effects. The dependence of the X-ray emission on the square of the gas density leads to a predominant role of cool cores in the detection of GCs. The contribution of cool cores to the X-ray luminosity does not scale with GC mass and cosmology and therefore affects the use of X-ray GCs in producing cosmological constraints. One of the main science goals of the eROSITA mission is to constrain cosmology with a wide X-ray survey. We propose an eROSITA GC detection scheme that avoids the use of X-ray GC centers in detection. We calculate theoretical expectations and characterize the performance of this scheme by simulations. Performing realistic simulations of point sources (PSs) in survey mode we search for spatial scales where the extended signal is uncontaminated by the PS flux. We derive a combination of scales and thresholds, which result in a clean extended source catalog. We design the output of the GC detection which enables calibrating the core-excised luminosity using external mass measurements. We provide a way to incorporate the results of this calibration in the production of final core-excised luminosity. Similarly to other GC detection pipelines, we sample the flux - core radius detection space of our method and find many similarities with the pipeline used in the 400d survey. Both detection methods require large statistics on compact GCs, in order to reduce the contamination from PSs. The benefit of our pipeline consists in the sensitivity to the outer GC shapes, which are characterized by large core sizes with little GC to GC variation at a fixed total mass. GC detection through cluster outskirts improves the GC characterization using eROSITA survey data and is expected to yield well characterized GC catalogs having simple selection functions.

Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effects were first proposed in the 1970s as tools to identify the X-ray emitting hot gas inside massive clusters of galaxies and obtain their velocities relative to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Yet it is only within the last decade that they have begun to significantly impact astronomical research. Thanks to the rapid developments in CMB instrumentation, measurement of the dominant thermal signature of the SZ effects has become a routine tool to find and characterize large samples of galaxy clusters and to seek deeper understanding of several important astrophysical processes via high-resolution imaging studies of many targets. With the notable exception of the Planck satellite and a few combinations of ground-based observatories, much of this "SZ revolution" has happened in the photometric mode, where observations are made at one or two frequencies in the millimeter regime to maximize the cluster detection significance and minimize the foregrounds. Still, there is much more to learn from detailed and systematic analyses of the SZ spectra across multiple wavelengths, specifically in the submillimeter (>300 GHz) domain. Matched filters (MFs) are elegant and widely used tools to detect and measure signals that resemble a known template in noisy data. However, they can perform poorly in the presence of contaminating sources of similar or smaller spatial scale than the desired signal, especially if signal and contaminants are spatially correlated. We introduce new multicomponent MF and matched multifilter (MMF) techniques that allow for optimal reduction of the contamination introduced by sources that can be approximated by templates. The application of these new filters is demonstrated by applying them to microwave and X-ray mock data of galaxy clusters with the aim of reducing contamination by point-like sources, which are well approximated by the instrument beam. Using microwave mock data, we show that our method allows for unbiased photometry of clusters with a central point source but requires sufficient spatial resolution to reach a competitive noise level after filtering. A comparison of various MF and MMF techniques is given by applying them to Planck multifrequency data of the Perseus galaxy cluster, whose brightest cluster galaxy hosts a powerful radio source known as Perseus A. We also give a brief outline how the constrained MF (CMF) introduced in this work can be used to reduce the number of point sources misidentified as clusters in X-ray surveys like the upcoming eROSITA all-sky survey. Some indications for tension have long been identified between cosmological constraints obtained from galaxy clusters and primary CMB measurements. Typically, assuming the matter density and fluctuations, as parameterized with Omega_m and sigma_8, estimated from CMB measurements, many more clusters are expected than those actually observed. One possible explanation could be that certain types of galaxy groups or clusters were missed in samples constructed in previous surveys, resulting in a higher incompleteness than estimated. We aim to determine if a hypothetical class of very extended, low surface brightness, galaxy groups or clusters have been missed in previous X-ray cluster surveys based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). We applied a dedicated source detection algorithm sensitive also to more unusual group or cluster surface brightness distributions. We found many known but also a number of new group candidates, which are not included in any previous X-ray / SZ cluster catalogs. In this paper, we present a pilot sample of 13 very extended groups discovered in the RASS at positions where no X-ray source has been detected previously and with clear optical counterparts. The X-ray fluxes of at least 5 of these are above the nominal flux-limits of previous RASS cluster catalogs. They have low mass ($10^{13} - 10^{14} M_{\odot}$; i.e., galaxy groups), are at low redshift (z<0.08), and exhibit flatter surface brightness distributions than usual. We demonstrate that galaxy groups were missed in previous RASS surveys, possibly due to the flat surface brightness distributions of this potential new population. Analysis of the full sample will show if this might have a significant effect on previous cosmological parameter constraints based on RASS cluster surveys.
