Objectives: To compare the postoperative results like vertical ramus height, vertical facial height, anterior open bite, unilateral cross bite and reankylosis in patients with TMJ ankylosis after doing gap arthroplasty versus creating a pseudoarthrosis by this modified technique. Background: This surgical study done on 10 patients with TMJ ankylosis were 5 patients had unilateral ankylosis and 5 had bilateral ankylosis. Pseudoarthrosis was created by this modified technique in all 10 patients. Methods: In this technique, a pseudoarthrosis is created by two oblique osteotomies and resection of triangular shaped bony wedge between the articular cavity and subcondylar region involving ankylotic bony mass and sub-ankylotic normal bone and a surgical gap is created without interposing any material with gap of 1cm anteriorly and gap height decreasing posteriorly resulting in pseudoarthrosis at posterior border without any loss of vertical ramus height. Results and conclusion: The postoperative results show that this new approach of creating a pseudoarthrosis is effective and convenient method of treating TMJ ankylosis and has many advantages over conventional gap arthroplasty.

Background The majority of working dentists experience some type of musculoskeletal discomfort during the course of their professional career. The prevalence and location of musculoskeletal symptoms are influenced by work habits, postures adopted by dentists while performing their professional work and socio demographic variables. Objectives The current study was carried out to find the association between musculoskeletal symptoms experienced by dentists and selected socio demographic variables in a southern Karnataka district. Methods For this study 300 dentists were selected by using convenience sampling method among post graduate dental students, faculty members and private practitioners with more than one year of experience from in and around Mangalore city. In order to find the association, a pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire - Musculoskeletal Disorder Rating Scale was used. Results The study showed that there was statistically significant association between frequency of pain and average patient(s) treated per day. The association between intensity of pain and average patient(s) treated per day was highly significant. Further there was a significant association between intensity of pain and field of dental practice. With regard to the field of dental practice, frequency of stiffness was significantly associated with the age. The association between frequency of stiffness and no. of year(s) in profession was highly significant. Conclusion The study revealed a significant association between musculoskeletal symptoms experienced by the dentists and socio demographic variables like; age, field of dental practice, no. of years in profession and average patients treated per day. To establish soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs) of fine-grained soils, researchers have employed geotechnical centrifuges. However, most of these studies were confined to small acceleration levels and as a result the suction, psi, created in the soil mass was extremely low (< 100 kPa). Hence, researchers have resorted to ultracentrifuges, which are capable of generating psi approximate to 300 kPa. However, the volume of the soil mass used in these centrifuges is too small to be representative of field conditions and determination of moisture content of the soil specimen is done by invasive and destructive techniques. Under these circumstances, utility of electrical measurements (i.e., voltage across two points in the soil mass) for determining soil moisture content, which has the distinct advantage of being both nondestructive and noninvasive and facilitates development of the SWCC, seems to be quite promising. Validity of the technique has been demonstrated by comparing the resultant SWCC, for kaolin, vis-a-vis the SWCCs reported in the literature and those obtained from the pedo-transfer function (PTF). Further, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (k(u)) of the kaolin was determined by employing various PTFs available in the SoilVision database and using the relationship proposed by Corey in 1977.
