Abstract

This paper combines the use of high order finite element methods with parallel preconditioners of domain decomposition type for solving electromagnetic problems arising from brain microwave imaging. The numerical algorithms involved in such complex imaging systems are computationally expensive since they require solving the direct problem of Maxwell's equations several times. Moreover, wave propagation problems in the high frequency regime are challenging because a sufficiently high number of unknowns is required to accurately represent the solution. In order to use these algorithms in practice for brain stroke diagnosis, running time should be reasonable. The method presented in this paper, coupling high order finite elements and parallel preconditioners, makes it possible to reduce the overall computational cost and simulation time while maintaining accuracy.

Abstract

International audience; The high-dimensional and multiscale nature of fusion plasma flows require the development of reduced models to be implemented in numerical codes capable of capturing the main features of turbulent transport in a sufficiently short time to be useful during tokamak operation. This paper goes further in the analysis of the dynamics of the κ − ε model based on the turbulent kinetic energy κ and its dissipation rate ε [Baschetti et al., Nuc. Fus 61, 106020 (2021)] to improve the predictability of the transverse turbulent transport in simulation codes. Present 1D results show further capabilities with respect to current models (based on constant effective perpendicular diffusion) and on the standard quasi-linear approach. The nonlinear dependence of D in κ and ε estimated from two additional transport equations allow to introduce some non-locality in the transport model. This is illustrated by the existence of parameter ranges with turbulence spreading. The paper also addresses another issue related to the uncertainties on the inherent free parameters of such reduced model. The study proposes a new approach in the fusion community based on a variational data assimilation involving the minimisation of a cost function defined as the distance between the reference data and the calculated values. The results are good, and show the ability of the data assimilation to reduce uncertainties on the free parameters, which remains a critical point to ensure the total reliability of such an approach.

Abstract

This work analyzes the use of conforming and nonconforming movement techniques for torque calculation with high-order hierarchic interpolation in electrical machines thin air gaps. For the nonconforming movement formulation, the Lagrange multipliers are used. The moving band is used for the conforming case. The behavior of torque results as a function of interpolation order and air-gap thickness is discussed. In order to compare formulations, results for two thin air-gap machines are shown. Abstract

In this work, we compare two nonconforming movement techniques: the mortar element method and the Lagrange multipliers. We present a unified formulation that can be easily used for electrical machines analysis. The anti-periodicity conditions as well as the use of high-order interface are discussed. The obtained linear systems are compared and results are shown for a permanent magnet machine. Index Terms--Hierarchic elements, Lagrange multipliers, mortar element method, movement.

Abstract

This work analyzes the use of the mortar element method and moving band technique to perform the movement in electrical machines. To improve the accuracy of the methods, high order hierarchic interpolation is used on the interface between moving and fixed parts. Results with first, second, and third order hierarchic interpolation are shown in order to compare conforming and nonconforming approaches. Abstract

Background Severe hypoperfusion can cause lung damage. We studied the effects of regional perfusion block in normal lungs and in the lungs that had been conditioned by lavage with 500 ml saline and high V T (20 ml kg−1) ventilation. Methods Nineteen pigs (61.2 ± 2.5 kg) were randomized to five groups: controls (n = 3), the right lower lobe block alone (n = 3), lavage and high V T (n = 4), lung lavage, and high V T plus perfusion block of the right (n = 5) or left (n = 4) lower lobe. Gas exchange, respiratory mechanics, and hemodynamics were measured hourly. After an 8-h observation period, CT scans were obtained at 0 and 15 cmH2O airway pressure. Results Perfusion block did not damage healthy lungs. In conditioned lungs, the left perfusion block caused more edema in the contralateral lung (777 ± 62 g right lung vs 484 ± 204 g left; p

Abstract

The subject presented in this paper concerns the approximation of a magnetostatic problem, where the primary unknown is the magnetic vector potential in a three-dimensional system composed of two solid parts separated by an interface. The approximation of the problem here is based on the mortar element method combined with edge elements on tetrahedrical meshes that do not match at the interface. In this paper we describe the proposed method and its implementation aspects together with some numerical results that illustrate how the method works.
