Phonon lifetimes are a key component of quasiparticle theories of transport, yet first-principles lifetimes are rarely directly compared to inelastic neutron scattering (INS) results. Existing comparisons show discrepancies even at temperatures where perturbation theory is expected to be reliable. In this work, we demonstrate that the reciprocal space voxel ($q$-voxel), which is the finite region in reciprocal space required in INS data analysis, must be explicitly accounted for within theory in order to draw a meaningful comparison. We demonstrate accurate predictions of peak widths of the scattering function when accounting for the $q$-voxel in CaF$_2$ and ThO$_2$. Passing this test implies high fidelity of the phonon interactions and the approximations used to compute the Green's function, serving as critical benchmark of theory, and indicating that other material properties should be accurately predicted; which we demonstrate for thermal conductivity.

Short-range magnetic correlations can significantly increase the thermopower of magnetic semiconductors, representing a noteworthy development in the decades-long effort to develop high-performance thermoelectric materials. Here, we reveal the nature of the thermopower-enhancing magnetic correlations in the antiferromagnetic semiconductor MnTe. Using magnetic pair distribution function analysis of neutron scattering data, we obtain a detailed, real-space view of robust, nanometer-scale, antiferromagnetic correlations that persist into the paramagnetic phase above the N\'eel temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ = 307 K. The magnetic correlation length in the paramagnetic state is significantly longer along the crystallographic $c$ axis than within the $ab$ plane, pointing to anisotropic magnetic interactions. Ab initio calculations of the spin-spin correlations using density functional theory in the disordered local moment approach reproduce this result with quantitative accuracy. These findings constitute the first real-space picture of short-range spin correlations in a magnetically enhanced thermoelectric and inform future efforts to optimize thermoelectric performance by magnetic means.

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy is used to nondestructively measure the elastic resonances of small solids to elucidate the material's elastic properties or other qualities like size, shape, or composition. Here, we introduce the software RUScal for the purpose of determining elastic properties by analyzing the eigenfrequencies of solid specimens with common shapes, such as rectangular parallelepipeds, cylinders (solid and hollow tube), ellipsoids, and octahedrons, as well as irregularly shaped ellipsoids that can be described analytically. All symmetry classes are supported, from isotropic to triclinic, along with the option to add or remove up to three orthogonal mirror planes as well as the ability to reorient the crystal axes with respect the sample edges via Euler angles. Additional features include tools to help find initial sets of elastic constants, including grid exploration and Monte Carlo methods, a tool to analyze frequencies as a function of sample length or crystal orientation, an error analysis tool to assess fit quality, and formatting of the input and output files for batch fitting, e.g., as a function of temperature. This software was validated with published resonant ultrasound spectroscopy data for various materials, shapes, and symmetries with noted improvements in calculation time compared to finite element methods.

Weathering plays a crucial role in a number of environmental processes, and the microstructure and evolution of multi-scale pore space is a critically important factor in weathering. In igneous rocks the infiltration of meteoric water into initially relatively dry material can initiate disaggregation, increasing porosity and surface area, and allowing further disaggregation and weathering. These processes, in turn, allow biota to colonize the rock, further enhancing the weathering rate. In some rocks this may be driven by primary mineral oxidation. One such mineral, biotite, has been repeatedly mentioned as a cause of cracking during oxidation. However, the scale-dependence of the processes by which this occurs are poorly understood. We cannot, therefore, accurately extrapolate laboratory reaction rates to the field in predictive numerical models. In order to better understand the effects of oxidation and test the hypothesis that fracture and disaggregation are initiated by swelling of oxidizing biotites, we reacted granite cores in a selenic acid-rich aqueous solution at 200 °C for up to 438 days. Elevated temperatures and selenic acid were used to provide relatively fast reaction rates and highly oxidizing conditions in sealed reaction vessels. These experiments were analyzed using a combination of imaging, X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and small- and ultra-small angle neutron scattering to interrogate porosity and microfracture formation. The experimental results show little observable biotite swelling, but significantly more observable fractures and growth of iron oxides and/or clays along grain boundaries. Pyrite disappeared from the reacted sample. Significant increases in porosity were also observed at the sample rim, likely associated with feldspar alteration. Fractures and transport were observed throughout the core, suggesting that stresses due to crystallization pressures caused by the growing iron phases may be the initiating factors in granite weathering, possibly followed by biotite swelling after sufficient permeability is achieved.

The advent of high-resolution electron and scanning probe microscopy imaging has opened the floodgates for acquiring atomically resolved images of bulk materials, 2D materials, and surfaces. This plethora of data contains an immense volume of information on materials structures, structural distortions, and physical functionalities. Harnessing this knowledge regarding local physical phenomena necessitates the development of the mathematical frameworks for extraction of relevant information. However, the analysis of atomically resolved images is often based on the adaptation of concepts from macroscopic physics, notably translational and point group symmetries and symmetry lowering phenomena. Here, we explore the bottom-up definition of structural units and symmetry in atomically resolved data using a Bayesian framework. We demonstrate the need for a Bayesian definition of symmetry using a simple toy model and demonstrate how this definition can be extended to the experimental data using deep learning networks in a Bayesian setting, namely rotationally invariant variational autoencoders., Combined Paper and Supplementary Information. 40 pages. 8 Figures plus 12 Supplementary figures

We report for the first time the magnetic structure of the high entropy oxide $(Mg_{0.2}Co_{0.2}Ni_{0.2}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.2})O$ using neutron powder diffraction. This material exhibits a sluggish magnetic transition but possesses a long-range ordered antiferromagnetic ground state, as revealed by DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The magnetic propagation wavevector is k=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2) based on the cubic structure Fm-3m, and the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic sheets in the (111) planes with spins antiparallel between two neighboring planes. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals strong magnetic excitations at 100 K that survive up to room temperature. Two-dimensional materials with intrinsic functionality are becoming increasingly important in exploring fundamental condensed matter science and for developing advanced technologies. Bulk crystals that can be exfoliated are particularly relevant to these pursuits as they provide the opportunity to study the role of physical dimensionality and explore device physics in highly crystalline samples and designer heterostructures in a routine manner. Magnetism is a key element in these endeavors; however, relatively few cleavable materials are magnetic and none possess magnetic order at ambient conditions. Here, we introduce Fe5- xGeTe2 as a cleavable material with ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. We established intrinsic magnetic order at room temperature in bulk crystals ([Formula: see text] = 310 K) through magnetization measurements and in exfoliated, thin flakes ([Formula: see text] ≈ 280 K) using the anomalous Hall effect. Our work reveals Fe5GeTe2 as a prime candidate for incorporating intrinsic magnetism into functional van der Waals heterostructures and devices near room temperature.

Magnetic structure and crystal symmetry, which primarily determine the time-reversal and inversion symmetry, may give rise to numerous exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic semiconductors and semimetals when arranged in different patterns. In this work, a new layered magnetic semiconductor, Eu3−δZn xSn yAs3, was discovered and high-quality single crystals were grown using the Sn flux. According to structural characterization by x-ray diffraction and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, Eu3−δZn xSn yAs3 is found to crystallize in a hexagonal symmetry with the space group P63/ mmc (No. 194). After examining different specimens, we conclude that their stoichiometry is fixed at ∼Eu2.6Zn0.65Sn0.85As3, which meets the chemical charge balance. Eu3−δZn xSn yAs3 is composed of septuple (Eu1−δSn yAs2)-Eu-(Zn xAs)-Eu sequences. The shortest Eu–Eu distance in the system is between two Eu layers separated by Zn xAs along the c-axis. Magnetization measurement shows an antiferromagnetic ordering in Eu3−δZn xSn yAs3 at TN ∼ 12 K, where the magnetic easy-axis is along the c-axis, and Mössbauer spectroscopy observes magnetic hyperfine splitting on Eu and Sn at 6 K. Magnetic anisotropy is significantly different from the ones along the ab-plane in other layered Eu-based magnetic semimetals. Heat capacity measurements confirm the magnetic transition around 12 K. Electrical resistivity measurement indicates semiconductor behavior with a band gap of ∼0.86 eV. Various Eu-based magnetic semiconductors could provide a tunable platform to study potential topological and magnetic properties.

Quasiparticle physics underlies our understanding of the microscopic dynamical behaviors of materials that govern a vast array of properties, including structural stability, excited states and interactions, dynamical structure factors, and electron and phonon conductivities. Thus, understanding band structures and quasiparticle interactions is foundational to the study of condensed matter. Here we advance a 'twist' dynamical description of quasiparticles (including phonons and Bloch electrons) in nonsymmorphic chiral and achiral materials. Such materials often have structural complexity, strong thermal resistance, and efficient thermoelectric performance for waste heat capture and clean refrigeration technologies. The twist dynamics presented here provides a novel perspective of quasiparticle behaviors in such complex materials, in particular highlighting how non-symmorphic symmetries determine band crossings and anti-crossings, topological behaviors, quasiparticle interactions that govern transport, and observables in scattering experiments. We provide specific context via neutron scattering measurements and first-principles calculations of phonons and electrons in chiral tellurium dioxide. Building twist symmetries into the quasiparticle dynamics of non-symmorphic materials offers intuition into quasi particle behaviors, materials properties, and guides improved experimental designs to probe them. More specifically, insights into the phonon and electron quasiparticle physics presented here will enable materials design strategies to control interactions and transport for enhanced thermoelectric and thermal management applications. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) is an efficient, nondestructive technique to study the elastic properties of solids. A low-temperature (2-300 K) probe has been assembled and tested at the NOMAD beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to assess the probe's neutronic properties, data acquisition system, and compatibility with existing sample environment. A case study on a bulk metallic glass, La 65 Cu 20 Al 10 Co 5, served to benchmark both hardware and software developments. The elastic constants of the metallic glass were determined as a function of temperature between 4 and 300 K and were used to guide neutron diffraction measurements at NOMAD. Tracking of a specific RUS peak center frequency and width enabled live monitoring of the sample temperature evolution that lagged thermometry by upwards of 40 K near room temperature. Assembly of a high-temperature (300-875 K) probe is underway and both probes are scheduled to be available to users by late-2021. Our aim is to provide users with live monitoring of an intrinsic variable at the neutron scattering beamlines, in addition to existing controls, to monitor the state of their samples and its elastic moduli and make informed decisions in real time.

In order to tune the magnetic properties of the cleavable high-Curie temperature ferromagnet Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$, the effect of increasing the electron count through arsenic substitution has been investigated. Small additions of arsenic (2.5 and 5%) seemingly enhance ferromagnetic order in polycrystalline samples by quenching fluctuations on one of the three magnetic sublattices, whereas larger As concentrations decrease the ferromagnetic Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$) and saturation magnetization. This work also describes the growth and characterization of Fe$_{4.8}$AsTe$_2$ single crystals that are structurally analogous to Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$ but with some phase stability complications. Magnetization measurements reveal dominant antiferromagnetic behavior in Fe$_{4.8}$AsTe$_2$ with a N\'{e}el temperature of $T_{\rm N}$ $\approx$42K. A field-induced spin-flop below $T_{\rm N}$ results in a switch from negative to positive magnetoresistance, with significant hysteresis causing butterfly-shaped resistance loops. In addition to reporting the properties of Fe$_{4.8}$AsTe$_2$, this work shows the importance of manipulating the individual magnetic sublattices in Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$ and motivates further efforts to control the magnetic properties in related materials by fine tuning of the Fermi energy or crystal chemistry., Comment: Accepted for publication in 2D Materials, with accepted version online

Charge density waves (CDW) are modulations of the electron density and the atomic lattice that develop in some crystalline materials at low temperature. We report an unusual example of a CDW in BaFe$_2$Al$_9$ below 100 K. In contrast to the canonical CDW phase transition, temperature dependent physical properties of single crystals reveal a first-order phase transition. This is accompanied by a discontinuous change in the size of the crystal lattice. In fact, this large strain has catastrophic consequences for the crystals causing them to physically shatter. Single crystal x-ray diffraction reveals super-lattice peaks in the low-temperature phase signaling the development of a CDW lattice modulation. No similar low-temperature transitions are observed in BaCo$_2$Al$_9$. Electronic structure calculations provide one hint to the different behavior of these two compounds; the d-orbital states in the Fe compound are not completely filled. Iron compounds are renowned for their magnetism and partly filled d-states play a key role. It is therefore surprising that BaFe$_2$Al$_9$ develops a structural modulation instead at low temperature instead of magnetic order., 34 pages, 8 figures Edits to text as well as figures 2 and 5. The entropy stabilized oxide ${\mathrm{Mg}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Co}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Ni}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{0.2}{\mathrm{Zn}}_{0.2}\mathrm{O}$ exhibits antiferromagnetic order and magnetic excitations, as revealed by recent neutron scattering experiments. This observation raises the question of the nature of spin-wave excitations in such disordered systems. Here, we investigate theoretically the magnetic ground state and the spin-wave excitations using linear spin-wave theory in combination with the supercell approximation to take into account the extreme disorder in this magnetic system. We find that the experimentally observed antiferromagnetic structure can be stabilized by a rhombohedral distortion together with large second-nearest-neighbor interactions. Our calculations show that the spin-wave spectrum consists of a well-defined low energy coherent spectrum in the background of an incoherent continuum that extends to higher energies.

Crystalline solids exhibiting glass-like thermal conductivity have attracted substantial attention both for fundamental interest and applications such as thermoelectrics. In most crystals, the competition of phonon scattering by anharmonic interactions and crystalline imperfections leads to a non-monotonic trend of thermal conductivity with temperature. Defect-free crystals that exhibit the glassy trend of low thermal conductivity with a monotonic increase with temperature are desirable because they are intrinsically thermally insulating while retaining useful properties of perfect crystals. However, this behavior is rare, and its microscopic origin remains unclear. Here, we report the observation of ultralow and glass-like thermal conductivity in a hexagonal perovskite chalcogenide single crystal, BaTiS3, despite its highly symmetric and simple primitive cell. Elastic and inelastic scattering measurements reveal the quantum mechanical origin of this unusual trend. A two-level atomic tunneling system exists in a shallow double-well potential of the Ti atom and is of sufficiently high frequency to scatter heat-carrying phonons up to room temperature. While atomic tunneling has been invoked to explain the low-temperature thermal conductivity of solids for decades, our study establishes the presence of sub-THz frequency tunneling systems even in high-quality, electrically insulating single crystals, leading to anomalous transport properties well above cryogenic temperatures., Defect-free crystals showing the glassy trend of low thermal conductivity with a monotonic increase with temperature are desirable but rare. Here, the authors observe atomic tunneling associated with low and glass-like thermal conductivity in a hexagonal perovskite chalcogenide single-crystal BaTiS3.

Phonon coupling to organic molecule dynamics yields giant isotope effects on transport properties., Lead halide perovskites are strong candidates for high-performance low-cost photovoltaics, light emission, and detection applications. A hot-phonon bottleneck effect significantly extends the cooling time of hot charge carriers, which thermalize through carrier–optic phonon scattering, followed by optic phonon decay to acoustic phonons and finally thermal conduction. To understand these processes, we adjust the lattice dynamics independently of electronics by changing isotopes. We show that doubling the mass of hydrogen in methylammonium lead iodide by replacing protons with deuterons causes a large 20 to 50% softening of the longitudinal acoustic phonons near zone boundaries, reduces thermal conductivity by ~50%, and slows carrier relaxation kinetics. Phonon softening is attributed to anticrossing with the slowed libration modes of the deuterated molecules and the reduced thermal conductivity to lowered phonon velocities. Our results reveal how tuning the organic molecule dynamics enables control of phonons important to thermal conductivity and the hot-phonon bottleneck.

The physics of heat conduction puts practical limits on many technological fields such as energy production, storage, and conversion, aswell as high-power and high-frequency electronics. Heat conduction in simple, defect-free crystals is generally well understood and seems to be well described by the phonon-gas model (PGM), where phonon wave-packets are viewed as heat carryingparticles which propagate their mean free path before being scattered. It is widelyappreciated that the PGM does not describe the full vibrational spectrum in amorphous materials, since this picture likely breaks down at higher frequencies. Furthermore, it has been shown that the PGM also breaks down in certain defective and anharmonic crystals,not only in the amorphous limit. In this work, in an attempt to bridge our understanding between crystal-like (described by the PGM)and amorphous-like heat conduction, we study structurally-complex crystalline YB14(Mn,Mg)SB11 experimentally using inelastic neutron scattering and computationally using a two-channel lattice dynamical approach. One channel is the commonly considered PGM, and the second we call the diffuson-channel since it is mathematically the same mechanism through which diffusons were defined. Our results show that the diffuson-channel dominates in YB14MnSb11 above 300 K, which is a champion thermoelectric material above 800 K. We demonstrate a method for the rational design of amorphous-like heat conduction by considering the energetic proximity phonon modes and modifying them through chemical means.

The lattice dynamics of orthorhombic Sb2Se3 is studied by a combination of inelastic neutron and 121Sb nuclear inelastic scattering giving access to the total and Sb partial density of phonon states (DPS). The Se partial DPS is determined from the difference between the total and Sb partial DPS. The total DPS is determined at 39, 150, and 300 K, and an analysis of the temperature‐induced mode shifts in combination with low‐temperature powder diffraction data is provided. Using an earlier reported theoretical approach, the corresponding total and partial DPS of Sb2Se3 are calculated by first‐principles calculations. Herein, a detailed analysis of the Grüneisen parameter, element‐specific and bulk Debye temperatures, and the mean force constants as derived from the experimental data and discrete Fourier transform calculations is provided. In general, the calculations underestimate the strength of the covalent SbSe bonds.

International audience; Simultaneous operando Nuclear Forward Scattering and transmission X‐ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements were carried out in order to investigate the electrochemical mechanism of NaFeO2 vs. Na metal using a specifically designed in situ cell. The obtained data were analysed using an alternative and innovative data analysis approach based on chemometric tools such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Multivariate Curve Resolution ‐ Alternating Least Squares (MCR‐ALS). This approach, which allows the unbiased extraction of all possible information from the operando data, enabled the stepwise reconstruction of the independent “real” components permitting the description of the desodiation mechanism of NaFeO2. This wealth of information allows a clear description of the electrochemical reaction at the redox‐active iron centres, and thus an improved comprehension of the cycling mechanisms of this material vs. sodium.

The magnetic order and the spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic entropy-stabilized oxide (Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$)O (MgO-ESO) have been studied using muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering. We find that antiferromagnetic order develops gradually in the sample volume as it is cooled below 140 K, becoming fully ordered around 100 K. The spin dynamics show a critical slowing down in the vicinity of the transition, and the magnetic order parameter grows continuously in the ordered state. These results indicate that the antiferromagnetic transition is continuous but proceeds with a Gaussian distribution of ordering temperatures. The magnetic contribution to the specific heat determined from inelastic neutron scattering likewise shows a broad feature centered around 120 K. High-resolution inelastic neutron scattering further reveals an initially gapped spectrum at low temperature which sees an increase in a quasielastic contribution upon heating until the ordering temperature.

α-Sb2O3 (senarmontite), β-Sb2O3 (valentinite), and α-TeO2 (paratellurite) are compounds with pronounced stereochemically active Sb and Te lone pairs. The vibrational and lattice properties of each have been previously studied but often lead to incomplete or unreliable results due to modes being inactive in infrared or Raman spectroscopy. Here, we present a study of the relationship between bonding and lattice dynamics of these compounds. Mossbauer spectroscopy is used to study the structure of Sb in α-Sb2O3 and β-Sb2O3, whereas the vibrational modes of Sb and Te for each oxide are investigated using nuclear inelastic scattering, and further information on O vibrational modes is obtained using inelastic neutron scattering. Additionally, vibrational frequencies obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations are compared with experimental results in order to assess the validity of the utilized functional. Good agreement was found between DFT-calculated and experimental density of phonon states with a 7% scaling factor. The Sb-O-Sb wagging mode of α-Sb2O3 whose frequency was not clear in most previous studies is experimentally observed for the first time at ∼340 cm-1. Softer lattice vibrational modes occur in orthorhombic β-Sb2O3 compared to cubic α-Sb2O3, indicating that the antimony bonds are weakened upon transforming from the molecular α phase to the layer-chained β structure. The resulting vibrational entropy increase of 0.45 ± 0.1 kB/Sb2O3 at 880 K accounts for about half of the α-β transition entropy. The comparison of experimental and theoretical approaches presented here provides a detailed picture of the lattice dynamics in these oxides beyond the zone center and shows that the accuracy of DFT is sufficient for future calculations of similar material structures.

Controlling the thermal energy of lattice vibrations separately from electrons is vital to many applications including electronic devices and thermoelectric energy conversion. To remove heat without shorting electrical connections, heat must be carried in the lattice of electrical insulators. Phonons are limited to the speed of sound, which, compared to the speed of electronic processes, puts a fundamental constraint on thermal management. Here we report a supersonic channel for the propagation of lattice energy in the technologically promising piezoelectric mineral fresnoite (Ba2TiSi2O8) using neutron scattering. Lattice energy propagates 2.8−4.3 times the speed of sound in the form of phasons, which are caused by an incommensurate modulation in the flexible framework structure of fresnoite. The phasons enhance the thermal conductivity by 20% at room temperature and carry lattice-energy signals at speeds beyond the limits of phonons., Fresnoite has an incommensurate structure that can be described as a nonlinear soliton lattice. Manley et al. show that the additional phason degrees of freedom associated with the solitonic structure can travel faster than more conventional phonon excitations, enabling supersonic energy transport.

Degradation processes of oxygen electrodes in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. La0.58Sr0.4Fe0.5Co0.5O3−x (LSCF) anodes (oxygen electrode) were analyzed after different long-term operations durations of 1774, 6100 and 9000 h. The results were compared with a cell in the initial state. Besides the LSCF anode, the SOECs were composed of a Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 barrier layer between the anode and electrolyte, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as electrolyte and Ni-YSZ as cathode (hydrogen electrode). Mossbauer spectra of the iron-containing anode were acquired in order to determine the alteration of the iron oxidation state and its local environment during operation. Mossbauer spectroscopy yields indirect information about the degradation mechanism, especially in combination with SEM, TEM, and XRD. XRD and TEM revealed the appearance of Co3O4 during the SOEC operation and SEM analyses confirmed the formation of SrZrO3 at the electrode/electrolyte interface. The spectral analysis confirmed the reduction of iron from Fe(IV) to Fe(III) in LSCF after long-term operation. The fraction of Fe(IV) in the electrode decreased with time and 18, 15, 13 and 11% were obtained for 0, 1774, 6100, and 9000 h of operation, respectively.

Summary While progress in thermoelectric materials based on the engineering of electronic and phononic characteristics is reaching a plateau, the addition of the spin degree of freedom has the potential to open a new landscape for alternative thermoelectric materials. Here, we present the concepts, current understanding, and guidelines for designing spin-driven thermoelectrics. We show that the interplay between the spin and heat currents in entropy transport via charge carriers can offer a path to enhance the electronic thermopower. The classical antiferromagnetic semiconductor manganese telluride (MnTe) is chosen as the case study due to its significant spin-mediated thermoelectric properties. We show that, although the spin-disorder scattering reduces the carrier mobility in magnetic materials, spin entropy, magnon, and paramagnon carrier drags can dominate and significantly enhance the thermoelectric power factor, and hence zT. Finally, several guidelines are drawn based on the current understanding for designing high-performance spin-driven thermoelectric materials.

Here, we report a wet synthesis-based titanium doping strategy to improve the structural stability and electrochemical performances, such as cycling stability and rate capability, of P2-type Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.5O2 layered oxide cathodes. Through Ti4+ doping aimed at replacing some of the Mn and Fe atoms in the crystal structure, effective mitigation of the Jahn Teller distortion caused by active Mn3+ before charging and Fe4+ after charging was achieved. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to investigate the effects of the Ti4+ dopant before and after cycling. It was observed that Ti4+ doping increased the Na layer thickness, minimized the lattice volume strain, showed better structural stability, minimally decreased Fe migration to the Na layer, and lowered charge transfer resistance in these P2-type cathodes. Overall, our reported synthesis methodology and electrochemical characterizations highlight the feasibility of Ti doping in sodium layered oxide P2-type cathodes.

The sodium-manganese-iron phosphate Na 2 Mn 1.5 Fe 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 (NMFP) with alluaudite structure was obtained by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis route. The physical properties and structure of this material were obtained through XRD and Mossbauer analyses. X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinements confirm a cationic distribution of Na + and presence of vacancies in A(2)’, Na + and small amounts of Mn 2+ in A(1), Mn 2+ in M(1), 0.5 Mn 2+ and Fe cations (Mn 2+ ,Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ) in M(2), leading to the structural formula Na 2 Mn(Mn 0.5 Fe 1.5 )(PO 4 ) 3 . The particles morphology was investigated by SEM. Several reactions with different hydrothermal reaction times were attempted to design a suitable synthesis protocol of NMFP compound. The time of reaction was varied from 6 to 48 h at 220 °C. The pure phase of NMFP particles was firstly obtained when the hydrothermal reaction of NMFP precursors mixture was maintained at 220 °C for 6 h. When the reaction time was increased from 6 to 12, 24 and 48 h, the dandelion structure was destroyed in favor of NMFP micro-rods. The combination of NMFP (NMFP-6H, NMFP-12H, NMFP-24H and NMFP-48H) structure refinement and Mossbauer characterizations shows that the increase of the reaction time leads to the progressive increment of Fe(III) and the decrease of the crystal size. The electrochemical tests indicated that NMFP is a 3 V sodium intercalating cathode. The comparison of the discharge capacity evolution of studied NMFP electrode materials at C/5 current density shows different capacities of 48, 40, 34 and 34 mA h g −1 for NMFP-6H, NMFP-12H, NMFP-24H and NMFP-48H respectively. Interestingly, all samples show excellent capacity retention of about 99% during 50 cycles.

In this work, Na2FePO4F-carbon composite powders were prepared by spray-drying a solution of inorganic precursors with 10 and 20 wt% added carbon black (CB) or carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In order to compare the effect of CB and CNT when added to the precursor solutions, the structural, electrochemical, and morphological properties of the synthesized Na2FePO4F-xCB and Na2FePO4F-xCNT samples were systematically investigated. In both cases, X-ray diffraction shows that calcination at 600 °C in argon leads to the formation of Na2FePO4F as the major inorganic phase. 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy was used as complementary technique to probe the oxidation states, local environment, and identify the composition of the iron-containing phases. The electrochemical performance is markedly better in the case of Na2FePO4F-CNT (20 wt%), with specific capacities of about 100 mAh/g (Na2FePO4F-CNT) at C/4 rate vs. 50 mAh/g for Na2FePO4F-CB (20 wt%). SEM characterization of Na2FePO4F-CB particles revealed different particle morphologies for the Na2FePO4F-CNT and Na2FePO4F-CB powders. The carbon-poor surface observed for Na2FePO4F-CB could be due to a slow diffusion of carbon in the droplets during drying. On the contrary, Na2FePO4F-CNT shows a better CNT dispersion inside and at the surface of the NFPF particles that improves the electrochemical performance.

An aqueous sol-gel process, previously developed for producing undoped and Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ or Pb2+ doped TiO2 photocatalysts with remarkably high photocatalytic activity without requiring any calcination step, has been adapted to produce Fe3+, Cr3+, La3+ or Eu3+ single-doped TiO2 photocatalysts as well as La3+-Fe3+ and Eu3+-Fe3+ co-doped TiO2 catalysts. The physicochemical properties of the obtained catalysts have been characterized using a suite of complementary techniques, including ICP-AES, XRD, UV-Vis spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and Fe-57 M ssbauer. The active crystalline phase is obtained without requiring any calcination step and all the different catalysts are composed of nanocrystallites of anatase with a size of 6-7 nm and a high specific surface area varying from 181 to 298 m2 g-1. In this study, the effect of the NO3:Ti(IV) mole ratio used to induce the peptisation reaction during the synthesis has been studied and the results revealed that this ratio can influence significantly the textural properties of the resulting catalyst. A screening of the photocatalytic activity of the undoped and Fe3+, Cr3+, La3+ or Eu3+ single-doped and co-doped photocatalysts has been performed by evaluating the degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV-Visible light (330 nm < < 800 nm). This study suggests that the photocatalyticmore » activity is significantly influenced by the dopant nature and content with an optimal dopant content being observed in the case of Fe3+ or La3+ single-doped as well as in the case of La3+-Fe3+ and Eu3+-Fe3+ co-doped catalysts. In the case of Cr3+ single-doped catalysts, a detrimental effect of the dopant on the photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol has been observed while no significant influence of the dopant has been detected in the case of Eu3+ single-doped catalysts. In conclusion, the role of the different dopants in modulating the photocatalytic activity is discussed.« less

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a synchrotron-based, element-specific, short-range structural method largely used in the study of materials, already widely employed for the study of the electrochemical processes in battery systems. The high penetration of the X-rays makes XAS particularly suited for the study of battery materials under operando conditions using specifically developed in situ electrochemical cells. In this paper, the application of XAS to the study of battery materials carried out at Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier (France) will be outlined, illustrating the type of information provided by XAS. The challenging study of the sodiation of Bi 0.50 Sb 0.50 followed individually and simultaneously at both metals will be also presented in order to highlight the typical advantages of this technique even when it is pushed at its technical limits.

The vibrational properties of glasses remain a topic of intense interest due to several unresolved puzzles, including the origin of the Boson peak and the mechanisms of thermal transport. Inelastic scattering measurements have revealed that amorphous solids support collective acoustic excitations with low THz frequencies despite the atomic disorder, but these frequencies are well below most of the thermal vibrational spectrum. Here, we report the observation of acoustic excitations with frequencies up to 10 THz in amorphous silicon. The excitations have atomic-scale wavelengths as short as 6 \AA{} and exist well into the thermal vibrational frequencies. Simulations indicate that these high-frequency waves are supported due to the high group velocity and monatomic composition of a-Si, suggesting that other glasses with these characteristics may also exhibit such excitations. Our findings demonstrate that a substantial portion of thermal vibrational modes in amorphous materials can still be described as a phonon gas despite the lack of atomic order.

Lead chalcogenides have exceptional thermoelectric properties and intriguing anharmonic lattice dynamics underlying their low thermal conductivities. An ideal material for thermoelectric efficiency is the phonon glass–electron crystal, which drives research on strategies to scatter or localize phonons while minimally disrupting electronic-transport. Anharmonicity can potentially do both, even in perfect crystals, and simulations suggest that PbSe is anharmonic enough to support intrinsic localized modes that halt transport. Here, we experimentally observe high-temperature localization in PbSe using neutron scattering but find that localization is not limited to isolated modes – zero group velocity develops for a significant section of the transverse optic phonon on heating above a transition in the anharmonic dynamics. Arrest of the optic phonon propagation coincides with unusual sharpening of the longitudinal acoustic mode due to a loss of phase space for scattering. Our study shows how nonlinear physics beyond conventional anharmonic perturbations can fundamentally alter vibrational transport properties., To optimize the performance of lead chalcogenides for thermoelectric applications, strategies to further reduce the crystal’s thermal conductivity is required. Here, the authors discover anharmonic localized vibrations in PbSe crystals for optimizing the crystal’s vibrational transport properties.

International audience; The antiferromagnetic semiconductor MnTe has recently attracted attention for spintronics and high-performance thermoelectric applications. However, little is known about its vibrational and thermal transport properties and how these might relate to the electronic and magnetic structure, particularly as related to 3d Mn orbital correlations. Here, we calculate a physically justified Coulomb correlation parameter within the DFT+U framework. We couple this framework with the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and first-principles Boltzmann transport to understand the magnetic, vibrational, and phonon thermal transport properties of MnTe. We also perform inelastic neutron and nuclear inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the total and partial phonon density of states, respectively. Very good agreement is obtained with the measured and calculated phonon density of states, and with available measurements for the band gap, local magnetic moments, Néel temperature, magnon dispersion, thermal conductivity, and phonon dispersion. This study demonstrates that the vibrational and magnetic degrees of freedom are not strongly coupled in MnTe, and provides a more comprehensive picture of this technologically promising material.

This technique was applied to measure nuclear inelastic scattering in TeO$_2$ at pressures up to 10 GPa and temperatures down to 25 K. The evaluated partial Te densities of phonon states were compared with theoretical calculations and with Raman scattering measured under the same conditions. International audience; Operando Sb K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and 57Fe Synchrotron Mössbauer Spectroscopy, used for the first time in the field of operando energy storage materials, assisted by operando magnetic measurements, were combined to clarify the role of iron and antimony in the electrochemical reaction mechanism of FeSb2 as negative electrode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIB). Both datasets were analyzed using an innovative chemometric approach involving principal component analysis (PCA) and multivariate curve resolution – alternating least square analysis (MCR‐ALS) yielding new insights on the sodiation reaction. Our findings show that the reaction of Na with FeSb2 during discharge leads to the formation of Na3Sb along with superparamagnetic Fe amorphous nanoparticles which contain small amounts of Sb dissolved in their lattice. During the following desodiation, the pristine material FeSb2 is not recovered while iron nanoparticles grow in size, and continue growing also along the following discharge. Even though such iron nanoparticles remain electrochemically inactive, they play a key role in the reduction and stabilization of the polarization as well as in the reversibility of the electrochemical sodiation of antimony.

Lattice dynamics and elastic constants in ${\mathrm{Mg}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sn}}_{x}$ were investigated using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, nuclear inelastic scattering, and inelastic x-ray scattering. Increasing the Sn content $x$ results in smaller elastic constants, lower Sn specific Debye temperature, lower speed of sound, and a softening of acoustic Sn specific phonons. However, close to band convergence at about $x=0.6$, the shear modulus is well below the expected value, which suggests a pronounced connection between band convergence and lattice dynamics in this system. Based on the determined speed of sound and average phonon group velocity, the importance of optical phonons for lattice thermal conductivity is discussed, as the significant reduction in both velocities would yield an implausibly low lattice thermal conductivity of only about 60% of the experimental value. Sn specific thermodynamic quantities calculated from the Sn specific density of phonon states substantiate the general softening of lattice vibrations upon substitution of Si by Sn. A major contribution to the vibrational entropy is thus due to Sn specific vibrational modes. The generalized density of phonon states in ${\mathrm{Mg}}_{2}{\mathrm{Si}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sn}}_{x}$ derived from inelastic x-ray scattering for one composition shows that vibrational modes related to lightweight Mg and Si set in above 12.5 meV, whereas Sn specific modes are concentrated around 11 meV.

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) is an efficient nondestructive technique to study the elastic properties of solid materials. In principle, the full elastic tensor can be determined for regularly shaped solids (e.g., sphere, cuboid, cylinder). Here, we report our progress in developing RUS probes for in situ neutron scattering at beamlines of the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A low-temperature (2–300 K) probe has been assembled and tested at the NOMAD and SEQUOIA beamlines to assess the probe’s neutronics, data acquisition system, and compatibility with the existing sample environment. Our discussion will include how the probe and data acquisition system operate as well as results for two measurements: bulk metallic glass (La65Cu20Al10Co5) and bismuth-antimony (Bi0.89Sb0.11 [1]). Assembly of a high-temperature (300–875 K) probe is currently underway and both probes are scheduled to be available to users by late-2021. Our aim is to provide users with live monitoring of an intrinsic variable at the neutron scattering beamlines, in addition to existing controls, to monitor the state of their samples and make informed decisions in real time. Rechargeable oxide batteries (ROB) comprise a regenerative solid oxide cell (rSOC) and a storage medium for oxygen ions. A sealed ROB avoids pumping loss, heat loss, and gas purity expenses in comparison with conventional rSOC. However, the iron oxide base storage medium degrades during charging–discharging cycles. In comparison, CaFe3O5 has improved cyclability and a high reversible oxygen storage capacity of 22.3 mol%. In this study, we analyzed the redox mechanism of this compound. After a solid-state synthesis of CaFe3O5, we verified the phase composition and studied the redox reaction by means of X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy. Results show a great potential to operate the battery with this storage material during multiple charging–discharging cycles.

An overview is presented on the variation of electrical conductivity, oxygen permeation, and thermal expansion coefficient as a function of the composition of perovskites in the quasi-ternary system LaFeO 3 –LaCoO 3 –LaNiO 3 . Powders of thirteen nominal perovskite compositions were synthesized under identical conditions by the Pechini method. The powder X-ray diffraction data of two series, namely La(Ni 0.5 Fe 0.5 ) 1− x Co x O 3 and LaNi 0.5- x Fe x Co 0.5 O 3 , are presented after the powders had been sintered at 1100 °C for 6 h in air. The measurements revealed a rhombohedral structure for all compositions except LaNi 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 for which 60% rhombohedral and 40% orthorhombic phase was found. The maximum DC electrical conductivity value of the perovskites at 800 °C was 1229 S cm −1 for the composition LaCoO 3 and the minimum was 91 S cm −1 for the composition LaCo 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 . The oxygen permeation of samples with promising conductivities at 800 °C was one order of magnitude lower than that of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3 (LSCF). The highest value of 0.017 ml cm −2 min −1 at 950 °C was obtained with LaNi 0.5 Co 0.5 O 3 . The coefficients of thermal expansion varied in the range of 13.2×10 −6 K −1 and 21.9×10 −6 K −1 for LaNi 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 and LaCoO 3 , respectively. 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy was used as probe for the oxidation states, local environment and magnetic properties of iron ions as a function of chemical composition. The substitution had a great influence on the chemical properties of the materials.

We report on the growth and characterization of several sapphire single crystals for the purpose of x-ray optics applications. Structural defects were studied by means of laboratory double-crystal X-ray diffractometry and white beam synchrotron-radiation topography. The investigations confirmed that the main defect types are dislocations. The best quality crystal was grown using the Kyropoulos technique with a dislocation density of 102-103 cm-2 and a small area with approximately 2*2 mm2 did not show dislocation contrast in many reflections and has suitable quality for application as a backscattering monochromator. As a result, a clear correlation between growth rate and dislocation density is observed, though growth rate is not the only parameter impacting the quality.

Thermoelectric devices can help to tackle future challenges in the energy sector through the conversion of waste heat directly into usable electric energy. For a wide applicability low-cost materials with reasonable thermoelectric performances and cost-efficient preparation techniques are required. In this context metal oxides are an interesting class of materials because of their inherent high-temperature stability and relative high sustainability. Their thermoelectric performance, however, needs to be improved for wide application. Compounds with adaptive structures are a very interesting class of materials. A slight reduction of early transition metal oxides generates electrons as charge carriers and crystallographic shear planes as structure motif. The crystallographic shear planes lead to a reduction of intrinsic thermal conductivity. At the same time, the electronic transport properties can be tuned by the degree of reduction. So far only a few transition metal oxides with adaptive structures have been investigated with respect to their thermoelectric properties, leaving much room for improvement. This review gives an overview of thermoelectric oxides, highlights the structural aspects of the crystallographic shear planes and the resulting thermoelectric properties.
