Plant growth regulators (PGRs), such as 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid, and ethylene have become commercialized in some countries to increase the productivity of field crops and to fortify the value of horticultural crops. However, very limited research has been conducted in Bangladesh on root growth, plant biomass and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using NAA. In this context, an experiment was conducted over two consecutive seasons, from November to April, in the research field of the Wheat Research Center (WRC) (under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain), Dinajpur-Bangladesh. Treatments consisted of the application of 25 mg/l NAA in five temporal regimes: 1) NAA applied at 20, 35 and 50 days after emergence (DAS); 2) NAA applied at 20 and 35 DAS; 3) NAA applied at 20 and 50 DAS; 4) NAA applied at 35 and 50 DAS; 5) a control (without NAA). Treatments were applied to 10 irrigated spring wheat genotypes i.e., ‘Kanchan’, ‘Protiva’, ‘Surov’, ‘Gourov’, ‘BAW 944’, ‘BAW 953’, ‘BAW 994’, ‘Akbar’, ‘Agrhani’ and ‘Sonalika’, and arranged in a split-plot design, namely as five NAA treatments as the main plots and 10 wheat genotypes as the sub-plots. In both seasons, data on root fresh and dry weight, root length, total plant dry biomass (TDM), grain yield (GY) and yield attributes of wheat were significantly (p?0.05) influenced by the NAA application regime and genotype. However, maximum root fresh and dry weight and longest roots were recorded in treatment 2 for ‘Gourav’. Maximum TDM was recorded at 40 and 50 DAS for ‘BAW 944’ in treatment 3. Significantly similar and maximum TDM at 60 DAS was found for ‘Kanchan’ and ‘Sourav’ in treatment 1 and at 70 DAS for ‘Sourav’ in treatment 2. ‘BAW 994’, ‘BAW 953’ and ‘Agrahani’ produced significantly similar and maximum number of spikelets spike-1 in treatment 2. ‘BAW 944’ and ‘BAW 953’ showed significantly similar 1000-grain weight in treatment 3 while smallest grain size was obtained in ‘BAW 953’ in the control treatment. ‘BAW 953’ produced highest GY in treatment 1, and was statistically similar to ‘BAW 994’ and ‘Protiva’ after the application of treatments 2 and 4. Therefore, the application of NAA at 20, 35 and 50 DAS in all genotypes was more effective (i.e., better root growth and yield) than the control plot. The present experiment was conducted to detect quality and level of the adulteration in milk collected from Dharchuni, Atani and Khamar bazar of Muktagacha Upazilla. Organoleptic parameters used to monitor the status of milk samples were color, flavor, taste, texture; physical parameter used was specific gravity; chemical parameters used were acidity, fat content, protein content, lactose content, ash, total solids, solids-not-fat; and the adulteration test used were starch test and formalin test. The tested milk samples showed significantly differences (p0.05) were found for %acidity, ash content, and SNF content of milk samples. Milk collected from Khamar Bazar was higher for protein and fat contents than other markets. Adulteration tests, for all the samples were found negative. Although, there were some fluctuations among the parameters of milk samples regarding standard values; all of the milk samples were found to be acceptable.

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University Dairy Farm to study the effect of fish meal (FM) on growth and reproductive performances of crossbred heifers. The experiment was designed into four treatment (T0=0% FM; T1=5% FM; T2=7.5% FM and T3 =10% FM) groups having initial weight 231.33 ± 32.39, 241.00 ± 46.29, 198.66 ±58.53 and 236.66 ± 31.64 kg, respectively. Feeding metabolism in an Indian major carp, Catla catla fingerlings of 10.8+0.56g was investigated in a flow-through water recirculating system. The metabolic energy loss in resting metabolism and feeding metabolism were determined by the indirect method of oxygen consumption followed by multiplication by suitable oxycalorific coefficient. This was done in four metabolic chambers of a respirometer system. THE OPERATION OF irrigation systems on three deep tubewells in Tangail District, Bangladesh, was monitored from 1989 to 1991. These systems used buried cement concrete pipe to distribute water from the tubewells, to irrigate diversified crops during the dry season. This paper focuses on the management of the deep tubewells and the irrigation systems. Each tubewell was installed by the government agency (the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation or BADC) following application from a cooperative of villagers (Krishak Samabay Sarnity or KSS), that took out a loan to purchase the tubewell. In principle the KSS owned and managed the tubewell, but in practice it was dominated by a few prominent individuals. The paper describes the membership of KSS on each tubewell, their participation in the management of the system, the management structure and KSS meetings. It also describes the financial arrangements made for operating the tubewell. Budgets were prepared each season, but not followed. Varying records of loan repayments of the three KSSs are also discussed. The utilization rates of all the tubewells were disappointing, averaging 3.88 hours per day at a discharge of about 35 lps compared to the design of 56 lps. The irrigated areas were typically less than half the design ( 40 ha), and irrigation intervals were high. The reasons for this poor performance were found to be a combination of social, managerial and agro-economic factors, and these are discussed in the paper. The management and operation procedures are compared with the recommendations of the Irrigation Management Programme (IMP) and possible improvements are discussed. These include moving to systematic irrigation of fields fed by the same branch, instead of the current erratic distribution of water under the farmers' fuel system. This case study illustrates some of the difficulties of Farmer-Managed Irrigation Systems (FMIS) where farmers' resources are unevenly distributed, particularly in the complex technical and management environment of deep tubewell irrigation.
