The study of biomechanics during locomotion provides valuable insights into the effects of varying conditions on specific movement patterns. This research focuses on examining the influence of different shoe parameters on walking biomechanics, aiming to understand their impact on gait patterns. To achieve this, various methodologies are explored to estimate human body biomechanics, including computer vision techniques and wearable devices equipped with advanced sensors. Given privacy considerations and the need for robust, accurate measurements, this study employs wearable devices with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. These devices offer a non-invasive, precise, and high-resolution approach to capturing biomechanical data during locomotion. Raw sensor data collected from wearable devices is processed using an Extended Kalman Filter to reduce noise and extract meaningful information. This includes calculating joint angles throughout the gait cycle, enabling a detailed analysis of movement dynamics. The analysis identifies correlations between shoe parameters and key gait characteristics, such as stability, mobility, step time, and propulsion forces. The findings provide deeper insights into how footwear design influences walking efficiency and biomechanics. This study paves the way for advancements in footwear technology and contributes to the development of personalized solutions for enhancing gait performance and mobility.

For stabilizing stop-and-go oscillations in traffic flow by actuating a variable speed limit (VSL) at a downstream boundary of a freeway segment, we introduce event-triggered PDE backstepping designs employing the recent concept of performance-barrier event-triggered control (P-ETC). Our design is for linearized hyperbolic Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) PDEs governing traffic velocity and density. Compared to continuous feedback, ETC provides a piecewise-constant VSL commands-more likely to be obeyed by human drivers. Unlike the existing regular ETC (R-ETC), which enforces conservatively a strict decrease of a Lyapunov function, our performance-barrier (P-ETC) approach permits an increase, as long as the Lyapunov function remains below a performance barrier, resulting in fewer control updates than R-ETC. To relieve VSL from continuously monitoring the triggering function, we also develop periodic event-triggered (PETC) and self-triggered (STC) versions of both R-ETC and P-ETC. These are referred to as R/P-PETC and R/P-STC, respectively, and we show that they both guarantee Zeno-free behavior and exponential convergence in the spatial $L^2$ norm. With comparative simulations, we illustrate the benefits of the performance-barrier designs through traffic metrics (driver comfort, safety, travel time, fuel consumption). The proposed algorithms reduce discomfort nearly in half relative to driver behavior without VSL, while tripling the driver safety, measured by the average dwell time, relative to the R-ETC frequent-switching VSL schedule.

Bilingual lexicons play a crucial role in various Natural Language Processing tasks. However, many low-resource languages (LRLs) do not have such lexicons, and due to the same reason, cannot benefit from the supervised Bilingual Lexicon Induction (BLI) techniques. To address this, unsupervised BLI (UBLI) techniques were introduced. A prominent technique in this line is structure-based UBLI. It is an iterative method, where a seed lexicon, which is initially learned from monolingual embeddings is iteratively improved. There have been numerous improvements to this core idea, however they have been experimented with independently of each other. In this paper, we investigate whether using these techniques simultaneously would lead to equal gains. We use the unsupervised version of VecMap, a commonly used structure-based UBLI framework, and carry out a comprehensive set of experiments using the LRL pairs, English-Sinhala, English-Tamil, and English-Punjabi. These experiments helped us to identify the best combination of the extensions. We also release bilingual dictionaries for English-Sinhala and English-Punjabi.

Text Simplification is a task that has been minimally explored for low-resource languages. Consequently, there are only a few manually curated datasets. In this paper, we present a human curated sentence-level text simplification dataset for the Sinhala language. Our evaluation dataset contains 1,000 complex sentences and corresponding 3,000 simplified sentences produced by three different human annotators. We model the text simplification task as a zero-shot and zero resource sequence-to-sequence (seq-seq) task on the multilingual language models mT5 and mBART. We exploit auxiliary data from related seq-seq tasks and explore the possibility of using intermediate task transfer learning (ITTL). Our analysis shows that ITTL outperforms the previously proposed zero-resource methods for text simplification. Our findings also highlight the challenges in evaluating text simplification systems, and support the calls for improved metrics for measuring the quality of automated text simplification systems that would suit low-resource languages as well. Massive changes in many aspects related to social groups of different socioeconomic backgrounds were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result, the overall state of mental health was severely affected globally. This study examined how the pandemic affected Sri Lankan citizens representing a range of socioeconomic backgrounds in terms of their mental health. The data used in this research was gathered from 3,020 households using a nationwide face-to-face survey, from which a processed dataset of 921 responses was considered for the final analysis. Four distinct factors were identified by factor analysis (FA) that was conducted and subsequently, the population was clustered using unsupervised clustering to determine which population subgroups were affected similarly. Two such subgroups were identified where the respective relationships to the retrieved principal factors and their demographics were thoroughly examined and interpreted. This resulted in the identification of contrasting perspectives between the two groups toward the maintenance and the state of social relationships during the pandemic, which revealed that one group was more 'socially connected' in nature resulting in their mental state being comparatively better in coping with the pandemic. The other group was seen to be more 'socially reserved' showing an opposite reaction toward social connections while their mental well-being declined showing symptoms such as loneliness, and emptiness in response to the pandemic. The study examined the role of social media, and it was observed that social media was perceived as a substitute for the lack of social connections or primarily used as a coping mechanism in response to the challenges of the pandemic

We consider identification of average treatment effects on the treated (ATT) within the difference-in-differences (DiD) framework in the presence of endogenous sample selection. First, we establish that the usual DiD estimand fails to recover meaningful treatment effects, even if selection and treatment assignment are independent. Next, we partially identify the ATT for individuals who are always observed post-treatment regardless of their treatment status, and derive bounds on this parameter under different sets of assumptions about the relationship between sample selection and treatment assignment. Extensions to the repeated cross-section and two-by-two comparisons in the staggered adoption case are explored. Furthermore, we provide identification results for the ATT of three additional empirically relevant latent groups by incorporating outcome mean dominance assumptions which have intuitive appeal in applications. Finally, two empirical illustrations demonstrate the approach's usefulness by revisiting (i) the effect of a job training program on earnings(Calonico & Smith, 2017) and (ii) the effect of a working-from-home policy on employee performance (Bloom, Liang, Roberts, & Ying, 2015).

We discuss pioneering heat and fluid flow simulations of fusion and fission energy systems with NekRS on exascale computing facilities, including Frontier and Aurora. The Argonne-based code, NekRS, is a highly-performant open-source code for the simulation of incompressible and low-Mach fluid flow, heat transfer, and combustion with a particular focus on turbulent flows in complex domains. It is based on rapidly convergent high-order spectral element discretizations that feature minimal numerical dissipation and dispersion. State-of-the-art multilevel preconditioners, efficient high-order time-splitting methods, and runtime-adaptive communication strategies are built on a fast OCCA-based kernel library, libParanumal, to provide scalability and portability across the spectrum of current and future high-performance computing platforms. On Frontier, Nek5000/RS has achieved an unprecedented milestone in breaching over 1 trillion degrees of freedom with the spectral element methods for the simulation of the CHIMERA fusion technology testing platform. In this paper, we consider the problem of regulating the outlet pressure of gas flowing through a pipeline subject to uncertain and variable outlet flow. Gas flow through a pipe is modeled using the coupled isothermal Euler equations, with the Darcy-Weisbach friction model used to account for the loss of gas flow momentum. The outlet flow variation is generated by a periodic linear dynamic system, which we use as a model of load fluctuations caused by varying consumer demands. We first linearize the nonlinear equations around the equilibrium point and obtain a 2-by-2 coupled hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) system expressed in canonical form. Using an observer-based PDE backstepping controller, we demonstrate that the inlet pressure can be manipulated to regulate the outlet pressure to a setpoint, thus compensating for fluctuations in the outlet flow. Furthermore, we extend the observer-based controller to the case when the outlet flow variation is uncertain within a bounded set. In this case, the controller is also capable of regulating the outlet pressure to a neighborhood of the setpoint by manipulating the inlet pressure, even in the presence of uncertain fluctuations in the outlet flow. We provide numerical simulations to demonstrate the performance of the controller.

A measurement of the double-spin asymmetry from electron-$^{3}$He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of $^{3}$He was performed at Jefferson Lab, for Q$^{2}$ values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/$c$)$^{2}$. The results of this measurement serve as a stringent test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with calculations from plane wave impulse approximation and Faddeev theory, we found that the Faddeev calculations, which use modern nuclear potentials and prescriptions for meson-exchange currents, demonstrate an overall good agreement with data.

We employ the recent performance-barrier event-triggered control (P-ETC) for achieving global exponential convergence of a class of reaction-diffusion PDEs via PDE backstepping control. Rather than insisting on a strictly monotonic decrease of the Lyapunov function for the closed-loop system, P-ETC allows the Lyapunov function to increase as long as it remains below an acceptable performance-barrier. This approach integrates a performance residual, the difference between the value of the performance-barrier and the Lyapunov function, into the triggering mechanism. The integration adds flexibility and results in fewer control updates than with regular ETC (R-ETC) that demands a monotonic decrease of the Lyapunov function. Our P-ETC PDE backstepping design ensures global exponential convergence of the closed-loop system in the spatial L^2 norm, without encountering Zeno phenomenon. To avoid continuous monitoring of the triggering function that generates events, we develop periodic event-triggered and self-triggered variants (P-PETC and P-STC, respectively) of the P-ETC. The P-PETC only requires periodic evaluation of the triggering function whereas the P-STC preemptively computes the time of the next event at the current event time using the system model and continuously available system states. The P-PETC and P-STC also ensure a Zeno-free behavior and deliver performance equivalent to that of the continuous-time P-ETC which requires continuous evaluation of the triggering function, in addition to the continuous sensing of the state. We provide numerical simulations to illustrate the proposed technique and to compare it with R-ETC associated with strictly decreasing Lyapunov functions.

Microservices architecture has been established as an ideal software architecture for cloud-based software development and deployment, offering many benefits such as agility and efficiency. Microservices are often associated with containers and container orchestration systems for deployment, as containerization provides convenient tools and techniques for resource management, including the automation of orchestration processes. Among the factors that make the cloud suitable for commercial software deployment, transient pricing options like AWS Spot Pricing are particularly attractive as they allow consumers to significantly reduce cloud costs. However, the dynamic nature of resource demand and the abrupt termination of spot VMs make transient pricing challenging. Nonetheless, containerization and container orchestration systems open new avenues to optimize the cost of microservices deployments by leveraging spot pricing on the public cloud while achieving application and business goals. We propose SpotKube, an open-source, Kubernetes-based, application-aware, genetic algorithm-based solution for cost optimization, which autoscales clusters for microservices-based applications hosted on public clouds with spot pricing options. SpotKube analyzes application characteristics and recommends the optimal configuration for resource allocation to the cluster. It consists of an elastic cluster autoscaler powered by an optimization algorithm that ensures cost-effective microservices deployment while meeting application performance requirements and handling abrupt termination of nodes, thereby minimizing the impact on system availability. In this paper, we expand recently introduced observer-based periodic event-triggered control (PETC) and self-triggered control (STC) schemes for reaction-diffusion PDEs to boundary control of $2\times2$ coupled hyperbolic PDEs in canonical form and with anti-collocated measurement and actuation processes. The class of problem under study governs transport phenomena arising in water management systems, oil drilling, and traffic flow, to name a few. Relative to the state of the art in observer-based event-triggered control of hyperbolic PDEs, our contribution goes two steps further by proposing observer-based PETC and STC for the considered class of systems. These designs arise from a non-trivial redesign of an existing continuous-time event-triggered control (CETC) scheme. PETC and STC eliminate the need for constant monitoring of an event-triggering function as in CETC; PETC requires only periodic evaluations of the triggering function for event detection, whereas STC is a predictor-feedback that anticipates the next event time at the current event exploiting continuously accessible output measurements. The introduced resource-aware designs act as input holding mechanisms allowing for the update of the input signal only at events. Subject to the designed boundary output feedback PETC and STC control laws characterized by a set of event-trigger design parameters, the resulting closed-loop systems, which are inherently Zeno-free by design, achieve exponential convergence to zero in the spatial $L^2$ norm. We illustrate the feasibility of the approach by applying the control laws to the linearized Saint-Venant model, which describes the dynamics of shallow water waves in a canal and is used to design flow stabilizer feedback laws via gate actuation. In this work, we compare existing non-polarizable force fields developed to study the solid or solution phases of hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites with the AMOEBA polarizable force field. The aim is to test whether more computationally expensive polarizable force fields like AMOEBA offer better transferability between solution and solid phases, with the ultimate goal being the study of crystal nucleation, growth and other interfacial phenomena involving these ionic compounds. In the context of hybrid perovskites, AMOEBA force field parameters already exist for several elements in solution and we decided to leave them unchanged and to only parameterize the missing ones (Pb\textsuperscript{2+} and CH\textsubscript{3}NH\textsubscript{3}\textsuperscript{+} ions) in order to maximise transferability and avoid over-fitting to the specific examples studied here. Overall, we find that AMOEBA yields accurate hydration free energies (within 5\%) for typical ionic species while showing the correct ordering of stability for the different crystal polymorphs of CsPbI\textsubscript{3} and CH\textsubscript{3}NH\textsubscript{3}PbI\textsubscript{3}. While the existing parameters do not accurately reproduce all transition temperatures and lattice parameters, AMOEBA offers better transferability between solution and solid states than existing non-polarizable force fields.

We conducted a detailed analysis on the quality of web-mined corpora for two low-resource languages (making three language pairs, English-Sinhala, English-Tamil and Sinhala-Tamil). We ranked each corpus according to a similarity measure and carried out an intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation on different portions of this ranked corpus. We show that there are significant quality differences between different portions of web-mined corpora and that the quality varies across languages and datasets. We also show that, for some web-mined datasets, Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models trained with their highest-ranked 25k portion can be on par with human-curated datasets.

This paper introduces the first observer-based periodic event-triggered control (PETC) and self-triggered control (STC) for boundary control of a class of parabolic PDEs using PDE backstepping control. We introduce techniques to convert a certain class of continuous-time event-triggered control into PETC and STC, eliminating the need for continuous monitoring of the event-triggering function. For the PETC, the event-triggering function requires only periodic evaluations to detect events, while the STC proactively computes the time of the next event right at the current event time using the system model and the continuously available measurements. For both strategies, the control input is updated exclusively at events and is maintained using a zero-order hold between events. We demonstrate that the closed-loop system is Zeno-free. We offer criteria for selecting an appropriate sampling period for the PETC and for determining the time until the next event under the STC. We prove the system's global exponential convergence to zero in the spatial $L^2$ norm for both anti-collocated and collocated sensing and actuation under the PETC. For the STC, local exponential convergence to zero in the spatial $L^2$ norm for collocated sensing and actuation is proven. Simulations are provided to illustrate the theoretical claims.

We demonstrate NekRS performance results on various advanced GPU architectures. NekRS is a GPU-accelerated version of Nek5000 that targets high performance on exascale platforms. It is being developed in DOE's Center of Efficient Exascale Discretizations, which is one of the co-design centers under the Exascale Computing Project. In this paper, we consider Frontier, Crusher, Spock, Polaris, Perlmutter, ThetaGPU, and Summit. Simulations are performed with 17x17 rod-bundle geometries from small modular reactor applications. The latest advancements in AI and deep learning have led to a breakthrough in large language model (LLM)-based agents such as GPT-4. However, many commercial conversational agent development tools are pipeline-based and have limitations in holding a human-like conversation. This paper investigates the capabilities of LLMs to enhance pipeline-based conversational agents during two phases: 1) in the design and development phase and 2) during operations. In 1) LLMs can aid in generating training data, extracting entities and synonyms, localization, and persona design. In 2) LLMs can assist in contextualization, intent classification to prevent conversational breakdown and handle out-of-scope questions, auto-correcting utterances, rephrasing responses, formulating disambiguation questions, summarization, and enabling closed question-answering capabilities. We conducted informal experiments with GPT-4 in the private banking domain to demonstrate the scenarios above with a practical example. Companies may be hesitant to replace their pipeline-based agents with LLMs entirely due to privacy concerns and the need for deep integration within their existing ecosystems. A hybrid approach in which LLMs' are integrated into the pipeline-based agents allows them to save time and costs of building and running agents by capitalizing on the capabilities of LLMs while retaining the integration and privacy safeguards of their existing systems.

We propose a new measurement of the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton elastic scattering at DESY. The purpose is to determine the contributions beyond single-photon exchange, which are essential for the Quantum Electrodynamic (QED) description of the most fundamental process in hadronic physics. By utilizing a 20 cm long liquid hydrogen target in conjunction with the extracted beam from the DESY synchrotron, we can achieve an average luminosity of $2.12\times10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}\cdot$s$^{-1}\cdot$sr$^{-1}$ ($\approx200$ times the luminosity achieved by OLYMPUS). The proposed TPEX experiment entails a commissioning run at 2 GeV, followed by measurements at 3 GeV, thereby providing new data up to $Q^2=4.6$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$ (twice the range of current measurements). This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities.
