The Metadata Recommendations for Audio-Visual Language Data provide guidance for assessing the quality and interoperability of metadata for audio-visual language data resources. The recommendations do not specify a particular metadata format nor do they require any particular serialization, as various research communities use metadata formats and serialization techniques that are established in their specific field which can differ from established formats in other fields. Any dataset that provides the metadata recommended in this document in a formally identifiable and machine-readable way will be considered compliant with these recommendations. The current document Metadata Recommendations for Audio-Visual Language Data contains the modules Generic Research Data, Language Data, and AV Data that specify recommendations for dataset level metadata for these respective aspects of research data. Metadata relating to other structural units such as data packages – also called session, bundle, or (speech) event – and files as well as metadata relating to more subject specific use cases are not specified in this document.

The landscape of digital lexical resources is often characterized by dedicated local portals and proprietary interfaces as primary access points for scholars and the interested public. In addition, legal and technical restrictions are potential issues that can make it difficult to efficiently query and use these valuable resources. As part of the research data consortium Text+, solutions for the storage and provision of digital language resources are being developed and provided in the context of the unified cross-domain German research data infrastructure NFDI. The specific topic of accessing lexical resources in a diverse and heterogenous landscape with a variety of participating institutions and established technical solutions is met with the development of the federated search and query framework LexFCS. The LexFCS extends the established CLARIN Federated Content Search that already allows accessing spatially distributed text corpora using a common specification of technical interfaces, data formats, and query languages. This paper describes the current state of development of the LexFCS, gives an insight into its technical details, and provides an outlook on its future development. The FCS specification (Schonefeld et al. 2014) will be extended with regard to announcing, querying and retrieving lexical resources. Specifically, this entails: Specifying the query language which is a “CQL Context Set” of the Contextual Query Language (standardized by the US Library of Congress) dedicated to query lexical entries. Its specification includes agreements on accessible fields of information (like part-of-speech, definitions, (semantically) related entries etc.) for a lexeme and how to combine them to complex queries. This is especially challenging due to the inherently hierarchical structure of lexical data. Specifying common data formats for a unified result presentation. On the basic level, this is achieved by a mandatory KWIC representation that allows annotating information types inline and by an advanced tabular-representation of all fields in a key-value-style. It is clearly understood that in most cases these representations can only provide a simplified view of the data. It is therefore endorsed to provide records in their complex native representation as well, with examples being different TEI dialects including TEI Lex-0, OntoLex/Lemon, and other formats. Extending the core FCS specification while remaining compatible with the overall architecture to enable the reuse of features such as access control for restricted resources or automatic registering of endpoints within the FCS system., This publication was created in the context of the work of the association German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e.V. Poster presentation This poster introduces the archiving workflow established at the Data Center for the Humanities (DCH) at the University of Cologne for those cases where accessibility of research data is not desired and findability is optional. This workflow allows us to archive research data in a structured, automated way on storage from infrastructure providers at the University. In this way, the research data is sustainably stored but not findable and accessible (dark archiving) or, optionally, its metadata is published and findable (cold archiving). Data stewardship is now a central part of FAIR research data management. Although various types of positions called data stewards have been created at academic institutions over the last years, no demand-oriented, formal model of data stewardship and the associated roles exist so far. This workshop report presents the outcomes of the panel discussion “The Importance of Demand and Environment for Defining Data Stewardship” held at the International FAIR Convergence Symposium 2020. It starts with the description of the situation at four structurally diverse research data management centers and their individual perspectives on the idea and role of data stewards. Despite efforts to define the profile of a data steward, the role is still new and the individual position profiles have not yet converged on a coherent job description, which is showing that local demand and environment are still more defining for specific positions than a generalized data steward role.

Im Rahmen seiner Öffentlichkeitsarbeit hat das Data Center for the Humanities (DCH) an der Universität zu Köln den Auftrag, Wissenschaftler:innen über Aspekte des Umgangs mit Forschungsdaten und des Forschungsdatenmanagements (FDM) zu informieren. Mit Beginn der Corona-Pandemie 2020 mussten neben Sprechstunde und Lehre in Präsenz auch die als Awareness-Initiative geplanten Kurzvorträge zu einzelnen FDM-Aspekten "Daten & Datteln" ausfallen. Stattdessen wurden die Inhalte in ein digitales Vermittlungsformat transferiert und als kompakte Sammelkarten an die Mitglieder der Philosophischen Fakultät und die interessierte Öffentlichkeit (via Twitter) kommuniziert. Das Poster dokumentiert und reflektiert, wie die Kommunikationsstrategie des DCH an die Pandemiebedingungen angepasst worden ist, um weiterhin sichtbar zu sein und FDM-Aspekte niederschwellig vermitteln zu können, und welche Mehrwerte und Möglichkeiten der Nachnutzung dabei entstanden sind. Ein Beitrag zur 8. Tagung des Verbands "Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum" - DHd 2022 Kulturen des digitalen Gedächtnisses.

Researchers looking for data across language archives often rely on harvesters such as OLAC or VLO. In this search, they are dependent on mappings of metadata categories across archives. While conducting a survey of metadata standards and landing pages of a number of DELAMAN archives, we came across problems with the notion that entering a search term in a unifying search box will reliably turn out all relevant available data, nothing less, nothing more. However, different types of vagueness in the metadata distort this picture. Taking “language”, the probably most relevant metadata category for linguists as an example, it becomes clear that it can refer to at least two categories: In some cases, it describes the content language, in others the languages of the actor(s) in the recording, in yet others it may be the language that is used to translate the resource. In our talk, we identify different types of vagueness: vagueness of the metadata category itself, values entered can be poorly defined, values can be overlapping, the relation of the metadata category to the resource can be unclear (e.g. does the date describe the publication date, the recording date, the date of metadata creation, the duration of a documentation project?). We show how vagueness impacts findability of resources and reliability of search results. We attempt to sketch possible solutions for some types of vagueness and discuss whether we just have to live with this vagueness in our metadata descriptions.

Pinnow (1966) as well as Norman Zide and Gregory Anderson (Zide & Anderson 2001, Anderson & Zide 2001, Anderson 2004, Anderson 2007) tried to reconcile the diversity of affixes and clitics and the abundance of morphological structures in modern Munda languages by reconstructing complex verbal morphology in the common ancestor. Reconstructions along these lines set proto-Munda apart from other Austroasiatic languages and from what we know of the history of the Austroasiatic family. Furthermore, a morphologically complex proto-Munda locates many crucial morphological developments in a pre-proto-Munda stage and has proto-Munda emerge as an exceptional Austroasiatic language apart from all other branches and with no explanation how and when it changed so dramatically.

We discuss how the upcoming IIIF AV specifications could contribute to interoperability of annotated language resources in the CLARIN infrastructure. After some short notes about IIIF, we provide a comparison between the concepts of the IIIF specifications and the ELAN annotation format. The final section introduces our experimental Media API that intends to optimize interoperability.

This talk presents recent advances Munda historical phonology. Based on the work on proto-Munda in Sidwell & Rau (2014), the talk will give an update on the current understanding of the consonantism and vocalism as well as our understanding of development of the prosodic structure in the Munda branch. The picture that arises from the current developments show proto-Munda to be a fairly typical Austroasiatic language – a language that was however in the process of being Indianized. In particular, the prosodic structure was already strongly influenced by the splitting of initial consonant clusters and a considerable number of non-Austroasiatic lexemes in the proto-Munda lexicon hint at the influence of mostly unknown South Asian languages. The consonant correspondences are by now well understood, the remaining questions relate to how the proto-Munda system of consonants looked like and to phonological details of the posited proto-phonemes. I will in particular address issues concerning glottal phonemes as well as the issue of Pinnow‘s *q. While Shorto‘s assertion that [t]he vocalism, indeed, is the crux of the problem of reconstructing PMK (Shorto 1976) rings true for proto-Munda as well, the situation is better than generally believed. It is now possible to reconstruct the proto-vowels for a large part of cognate sets. The remaining sets, for which no reconstruction is currently possible, can be classified into well defined groups with common complicating conditions. These include for example words with epenthetic schwa or the Rapu‘dwords already identified by Pinnow (1959). Taking the initial clusters posited by Shorto in his Mon-Khmer Comparative Dictionary (Shorto 2006) as the starting point, the talk will examine the patterns of cluster-splitting that occurred in the development of proto-Munda and the resulting difficulties for the vocalism. The aim is to give a comprehensive overview of proto-Munda phonology, to specify open questions and to address the implications for future research.

On the basis of historical linguistic and language geographic evidence, the authors advance the novel hypothesis that the Munda languages originated on the east coast of India after their Austroasiatic precursor arrived via a maritime route from Southeast Asia, 3,500 to 4,000 years ago. Based on the linguistic evidence, we argue that pre-Proto-Munda arose in Mainland Southeast Asia after the spread of rice agriculture in the late Neolithic period, sometime after 4,500 years ago. A small Austroasiatic population then brought pre-Proto-Munda by means of a maritime route across the Bay of Bengal to the Mahanadi Delta region – an important hub location for maritime trade in historic and pre-historic times. The interaction with a local South Asian population gave rise to proto-Munda and the Munda branch of Austroasiatic. The Maritime Hypothesis accounts for the linguistic evidence better than other scenarios such as an Indian origin of Austroasiatic or a migration from Southeast Asia through the Brahmaputra basin. The available evidence from archaeology and genetics further supports the hypothesis of a small founder population of Austroasiatic speakers arriving in Odisha from Southeast Asia before the Aryan conquest in the Iron-Age.

In this paper, we present a strategy for the integration of existing heterogeneous language resources like texts and dictionaries by connecting these resources and making them available for internal projects and third party applications through APIs. We describe our approach in the context of the C-SALT (Cologne South Asian Languages and Texts http://c-salt.uni- koeln.de/) initiative, where projects and resources hosted at the University of Cologne covering South Asian languages are presented. To illustrate the potential use of our setup, we first introduce VedaWeb, a web-based platform that provides access to ancient Indian texts written in Vedic Sanskrit, the oldest form of ancient Indo-Aryan. Then we describe the C-SALT APIs for Dictionaries (https://api.c-salt.uni-koeln.de/). These APIs make several large Pāli and Sanskrit dictionaries available. Building on that, we present the architecture behind these APIs and finally we summarize by analyzing the potential role of APIs in Digital Humanities projects.

This paper is a preliminary investigation into the problems the representation of the accents of Vedic Sanskrit poses to Sanskrit lexicography. The purpose is to assess the principles applied in various lexicographic works in the representation of Vedic accents and its relation to the underlying linguistic category as well as traditions of accent marking in different texts. Since the focus is on Sanskrit lexicography, we ignore the complexity of accent marking in manuscripts and the diversity of accent marking across different Indic scripts that were used to write Sanskrit over the ages. We will restrict ourselves to accent marking in Devanagari and Latin script in print, as these two are the relevant systems for virtually all of modern philological Sanskrit lexicography.

The paper deals with the correlative-relative clauses (CRCs) in the Munda branch of the Austroasiatic language family. Two types of CRCs are distinguished: headed CRCs and headless CRCs, the former being the main focus of this paper. Headed CRCs are attested in most Munda languages and there is a consensus that this construction was borrowed from Indo-Aryan (IA). Despite a scarcity of evidence for most Munda languages, this article identifies a number of relevant characteristics of both headed and headless CRCs in Munda languages. Among those concerning headed CRCs, one can point out the variation in the form of the correlative pronoun (which can be a native interrogative pronoun or the borrowed IA correlative pronoun) as well as the variation with respect to the degree of integration of headed CRCs into the grammar of individual Munda languages. The latter issue awaits further research, notably regarding the competition between the headed CRCs and the prenominal relative clauses (the original Munda relative clause formation strategy), but a number of preliminary remarks were nevertheless put forward. As for the headless CRCs, which are also attested across the Munda branch, evidence can be adduced suggesting they are original in Munda (unlike headed CRCs). Evidence for this claim is found in the history of Dravidian languages (headless CRCs are attested in old Dravidian languages), as well as in crosslinguistic tendencies (headless CRCs are widespread, whereas headed CRCs are geographically and genetically restricted).
