This dissertation examines the emergence of social embeddedness through economic actions in start-ups’ cohesive networks. The motivation for this study came from the interest to explore a previously unknown phenomenon in Finnish start-up entrepreneurship. The purpose was to understand whether the acquisition of human resources is inherently enmeshed in the social relations of cohesive networks in both software and academic start-ups. A qualitative multiple case-study research method was used to understand the complexity of embeddedness, with the aim to replicate an existing theory using exploratory case studies, instead of building a new theory. Granovetter’s embeddedness argument was used as a theoretical basis. Based on the results, in academic start-ups’ cohesive networks, social relations significantly helped the company supplement often initially scarce human resources. These social relations within the university faculty context provided significant business support for founders and founding teams in start-ups’ early development by generating added value and further strengthening the business vision. This may have happened even long before the company was founded. The results from the software start-ups’ cohesive networks slightly differed when compared to those from the academic start-ups, although certain similarities also existed. For instance, founders of software start-ups who had rented an office space in an accelerator or an equivalent entrepreneur community 2–5 years earlier had formed dense, cohesive networks that primarily consisted of social relations, such as founding team members, peers and experienced colleagues, in the same business. These cohesive network social relations were crucial to business development, including software development. The present study makes primarily empirical contributions. Its findings indicate that researchers should further explore particularly academic start-ups’ cohesive networks by testing Granovetter’s (1985) embeddedness argument that may provide an excellent theory-testing platform, especially when the analysis is limited to university faculties and their cohesive network’s social relations that generate added value. Tiivistelmä Tämä väitöstyö keskittyi tarkastelemaan sosiaalisen uppoutumisen syntymistä taloudellisiin toimiin start-up-yritysten koheesioverkostoissa. Tutkimuksen motiivina oli kiinnostus tutkia aiemmin melko tuntematonta ilmiötä suomalaisessa startup-yrittäjyydessä. Tarkoituksena oli ymmärtää, liittyykö kaikki taloudellinen toiminta luontaisesti yhteenkuuluvien verkostojen sosiaalisiin suhteisiin yritysten alkuvaiheessa sekä tutkimuslähtöisissä että ohjelmistostart-upeissa. Laadullista tutkimusmenetelmää käytettiin tekemään kohdeilmiö näkyväksi ja ymmärtämään ja tulkitsemaan sitä. Granovetterin kehittämää ns. upotusargumenttia käytettiin tässä teoreettisena perustana. Tulosten perusteella akateemisissa, tutkimuslähtöisissä start-up-yrityksissä koheesioverkoston sosiaaliset suhteet voivat jopa merkittävästi auttaa yritystä täydentämään usein aluksi niukkoja henkilöresursseja. Nämä yhtenäisen verkoston sosiaaliset suhteet näyttivät tarjoavan varsin merkittävää tukea perustajille ja perustajaryhmille liiketoiminnan varhaisessa kehityksessä jo ennen yrityksen perustamista. Ohjelmistostart-up-yritysten osalta tulokset olivat osittain ristiriitaisia, vaikka myös tiettyjä yhtäläisyyksiä oli. Muutamia vuosia aiemmin toimistotilaa yrityskiihdyttämöstä tai vastaavasta yhteisöstä hankkineet ohjelmistoyritysten perustajat olivat vähitellen, usein epäonnistumisten kautta, muodostaneet tiheitä, kohesiivisia verkostoja. Ne koostuivat ensisijaisesti sosiaalisista suhteista, kuten perustajatiimin jäsenistä, vertaisista ja kokeneista työtovereista samassa liiketoiminnassa. Tämän tutkimuksen tulokset viittaavatkin osaltaan siihen, että olisi hyödyllistä tutkia lisää erityisesti akateemisten start-up-yritysten koheesioverkostoja, erityisesti jos analyysi rajataan yliopistojen tiedekuntiin ja niiden yhtenäisen verkoston lisäarvoa tuottaviin sosiaalisiin suhteisiin.

Objective: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder. Men are on average similar to 1.5 times more likely to develop PD compared to women with European ancestry. Over the years, genomewide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous genetic risk factors for PD, however, it is unclear whether genetics contribute to disease etiology in a sex-specific manner. Methods: In an effort to study sex-specific genetic factors associated with PD, we explored 2 large genetic datasets from the International Parkinson’s Disease Genomics Consortium and the UK Biobank consisting of 13,020 male PD cases, 7,936 paternal proxy cases, 89,660 male controls, 7,947 female PD cases, 5,473 maternal proxy cases, and 90,662 female controls. We performed GWAS meta-analyses to identify distinct patterns of genetic risk contributing to disease in male versus female PD cases. Results: In total, 19 genomewide significant regions were identified and no sex-specific effects were observed. A high genetic correlation between the male and female PD GWAS were identified (rg = 0.877) and heritability estimates were identical between male and female PD cases (similar to 20%). Interpretation: We did not detect any significant genetic differences between male or female PD cases. Our study does not support the notion that common genetic variation on the autosomes could explain the difference in prevalence of PD between males and females cases at least when considering the current sample size under study. Further studies are warranted to investigate the genetic architecture of PD explained by X and Y chromosomes and further evaluate environmental effects that could potentially contribute to PD etiology in male versus female patients.

Tiivistelmä. Myyntitapaaminen on lähes ainut yrityksen myyntiprosessista asiakkaalle näkyvä osa. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoite on selvittää miten yrityksen myyntitapaamisten ohjaaminen ja johtaminen voidaan yrityksissä toteuttaa yhtenäisesti. Tutkimuksen teoriaosiossa tutkitaan miten myyntitapaaminen on sijoitettu myynnin tutkimuksessa sekä miten prosessijohtamisen tutkimuksessa on tutkittu yhtenäistä toimintatapaa. Tämä tutkimus on tehty toimintatutkimuksena avoimilla puolistrukturoiduilla haastatteluilla. Ainestoa on lisäksi analysoitu sisällönanalyysin menetelmällä. Tutkimus on tehty laadullisin menetelmin, johon on haastateltu 7 henkilöä. Tämä tutkimus on tehty teknisenä toimintatutkimuksena, jossa haastatteluja on käytetty tutkijan apuna syventää ymmärrystä ja ratkaista tutkittua ongelmaa. Tämän tutkimuksen perusteella yhtenäistä toimintatapaa ole vielä laajassa mittakaavassa toteutettu. Toimintatutkimuksen tuloksena löydettiin kuitenkin neljä merkittävintä tekijää, joiden perusteella muodostettiin prosessijohtamisen teoriaa hyödyntäen malli myyntitapaamiskonseptista. Lisäksi muodostettiin ratkaisumyynnin portaat-malli, joka kuvaa yritysten myyntitapaamisten tyypillistä etenemistä. Tutkimus suunta ja tulokset rikastavat nykyistä kirjallisuutta tuoden esille myyntitapaamisen johtamisen yksittäisenä osana yrityksen myyntiprosessista. Tärkein tutkimuksen tavoite oli tehdä näkyväksi ja sanoittaa miten myyntijohdon tulee myyntitapaamisia ohjaa ja johtaa. Myyntitapaamisen merkitys ja rooli yrityksen myynnissä korostuu ja siellä työskentelevien henkilöiden ammattitaitoa tulee pystyä johtamaan ja kehittämään.Enabling factors for a unified sales meeting concept. Abstract. A sales meeting is almost the only part of the company’s sales process visible to a customer. The study aims to find out how important it is to implement the guidance and management of sales meetings in a unified manner. The study theory section examines how a sales meeting ranks in market research and how process management research examines a unified approach. This study is conducted as an action study with open-structured interviews. The material is available analyzed by the content analysis method. The study was conducted using qualitative methods, where seven people were interviewed. This study has been conducted as a technical action study, which is why the interviews have been used to help the researcher deepen their understanding and solve the problem studied. Based on this study, a unified approach has not yet been implemented on a large scale. However, as a result of the action research, the four most significant factors were found, on the basis of which a model of the sales meeting concept was formed, utilizing the theory of process management. In addition, a solution sales ladder model was developed that describes the typical progress of companies’ sales meetings. The research direction and results enrich the current literature by highlighting sales meeting management as a single part of a company’s sales process. The main goal of the study was to make visible and say how sales management should direct and lead sales meetings. The importance and role of the sales meeting in the company’s sales is emphasized, and the professional skills of the people working there must be able to be managed and developed.

Tiivistelmä. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastelen ihmisen ja ympäristön suhdetta sekä erilajisia toimijoita Johanna Sinisalon romaanissa Linnunaivot (2008). Romaanissa on sekä ihmis- että eläintoimijoita, ja myös ympäristö esitetään romaanissa toimijana. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on näyttää, miten romaani kommentoi ihmisen ja ympäristön suhdetta. Teos tuo esiin erilaisia tapoja suhtautua ympäristöön ja näyttää myös sen, miten ihmiset ja eläimet ovat monella tapaa samankaltaisia. Teoksessa myös ympäristö saa aktiivisen roolin sen sen sijaan, että se olisi vain ihmishahmojen toiminnan taustana. Tutkielman teoreettinen tausta muodostuu ekokritiikistä, materiaalisesta ekokritiikistä sekä eläintutkimuksesta. Metodeina tutkielmassani käytän henkilöhahmoanalyysia, teoksen rakenteen ja kirjallisuudenlajin sekä intertekstuaalisuuden analyysia. Tutkielmani edustaa ekokriittistä tutkimusta, sillä tarkastelen sitä, miten ympäristö esitetään teoksessa. Tutkielmassani tuon esiin, miten romaanin eri henkilöhahmot edustavat erilaisia tyyppejä ja sitä kautta erilaisia tapoja suhtautua ympäristöön. Näillä erilaisilla tyypeillä tuodaan esiin sitä, miten yksipuoliset tai äärimmäiset ajattelutavat voivat olla haitallisia. Joskus on tarpeen osata muuttaa omaa suhtautumistaan ja sitä kautta omaa käyttäytymistään. Yksi romaanin teemoista on tuoda esiin lintujen viisautta ja sitä, miten linnuilla on yllättävän paljon samanlaisia ominaisuuksia kuin ihmisilläkin. Tähän viittaa romaanin nimi Linnunaivot. Vertailemalla ihmis- ja eläinhahmoja toisiinsa tuon esille sen, että romaanin linnuilla ja ihmisillä on samanlaisia ominaisuuksia ja ne käyttäytyvät yllättävän samanlaisesti. Kun tarkastellaan ympäristön kuvausta teoksessa, tulee esiin, että ympäristö esitetään sekä kielen että tarinan tasolla romaanissa toimijana. Ympäristöä ja eri henkilöhahmoja tarkastellessa tulee esille myös ajatus siitä, että mikään toimija ei toimi itsenäisesti, vaan sekä romaanin hahmot että ympäristö toimivat kaikki vuorovaikutuksessa keskenään. Yksi tärkeistä teemoista romaanissa on matkustaminen, matkustamisen syyt ja siihen liittyvät ongelmat. Teoksen pohjatekstinä toimii Joseph Conradin teos Pimeyden sydän (1902). Kahdessa teoksessa tapahtuvat matkat rinnastetaan sekä ympäristön kielellisen kuvauksen tasolla että temaattisella tasolla. Molemmissa teoksissa ympäristö kuvataan toimijana, uhkaavana oliona, joka ei toivota sinne matkustavia tervetulleeksi. Teoksessa otetaan kantaa siihen, miten ympäristöä tulisi kohdella. Erämaahan matkustamista tulisi harkita tarkkaan, sillä siitä on aina ympäristölle haittaa. Tasmanian erämaa alkaa olla vaarassa, kun matkustajamäärät nousevat jatkuvasti. Lisäksi teoksessa käsitellään myös Suomea ja Lappia, jota uhkaavat täsmälleen samat turismiin ja luonnon köyhtymiseen liittyvät ongelmat kuin Australiaakin.

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli etsiä Nokian puhelinliiketoiminnasta se ajanjakso, jolloin lopullinen käänne huonompaan alkoi. Tässä tutkimuksessa analysoitiin Nokiassa suoritettuja strategisia päätöksiä, etsien keskeisiä syitä yrityksen puhelinliiketoiminnan kokemiin vaikeuksiin 2000-luvun lopulla ja 2010-luvulla. Nokian puhelinliiketoiminnasta julkaisemat vuosiraportit sekä tiedotteet auttoivat tätä tutkimusta vastaamaan tutkimukselle asetettuun kysymykseen. Lisäksi siinä auttoivat Nokian puhelimien käyttötestit, käyttäjien kokemukset, sekä tilastoaineistot Nokian puhelinmyynneistä. Tämän tutkimuksen teoreettinen malli toteutettiin sisällönanalyysin avulla, keräämällä ensin riittävä määrä teoreettista aineistoa, hajottamalla se pienempiin osiin, jonka jälkeen tietomäärästä koostettiin täysin uudenlainen kokonaisuus. Tässä tutkimuksessa käytettiin laadullista, kvalitatiivista sisällönanalyysiä. Tämän tutkimuksen mukaan Nokia nousi 1990-luvun lopulta 2000-luvun alun markkinajohtajaksi investoimalla voimakkaasti uusiin teknologioihin. Tässä tutkimuksessa havaittiin Nokian olleen kilpailijoitaan nopeampi useissa suurissa puhelinliiketoiminnan murrosvaiheissa. Tämä tutkimus koki kyseisten muutosten olleen osa digitaalista yhteenliittymistä. Nokian onnistui tämän tutkimuksen mukaan kehittämään disruptiivisia innovaatioita, joilla se kasvatti puhelinmyyntiään uusilla ja kehittyvillä markkinoilla. Nokia menestyi 2000-luvun lopulla tämän tutkimuksen mukaan tuottamalla useita uusia innovaatioita. Tämä tutkimus havaitsi Nokian puhelinliiketoiminnan alamäen alkaneen kiihtyä vuosien 2008 ja 2011 välillä, johtuen useista samanaikaisista negatiivisista tapahtumista. Vuosien 2008 ja 2010 välillä Nokian useissa uusissa älypuhelimissa tämä tutkimus havaitsi merkittäviä puutteita. Niiden tämä tutkimus havaitsi olleen kuluttajille negatiivinen signaali Nokian tuotteiden laadusta. Tämä tutkimus havaitsi lisäksi Nokian epäonnistuneen Ovi mobiilikaupan kehitystyön suhteen vuosina 2007–2009. Lisäksi tämä tutkimus havaitsi Nokian epäonnistuneen Nseries-malleillaan vuosivälillä 2008–2010. Nokian johto teki tämän tutkimuksen mukaan väärän strategisen valinnan siirtyessään käyttämään Windowsin laitealustaa alkuvuodesta 2011. Sillä estettiin tämän tutkimuksen mukaan Nokian mahdollisuus menestyä vuodesta 2011 eteenpäin. Tämä tutkimus kuvasi Nokiaa puhelinliiketoiminnan merkittävänä kehittäjänä ja menestyjänä. Nokian ongelmien tämä tutkimus havaitsi tapahtuneen suhteellisen pienellä aikajaksolla.

The hybrid lager yeast Saccharomyces pastorianus (S. cerevisiae × S. eubayanus) contains several genes encoding proteins responsible for the uptake and metabolism of maltose and maltotriose. In many cases the genes occur as orthologues, that is, the S. cerevisiaegene exists along with the S. eubayanus gene. Prior to formation of the hybrid, these genes existed in organisms, which had been separated for tens of millions of years and were expected to show some level of genetic and functional differentiation. In this study, oligonucleotide probes were designed for TRAC analysis of transcription of the S. cerevisiae and S. eubayanus orthologues of AGT1, MALx1, MALx2 and MALx3 as well as the S. cerevisiae‐derived MPH2/3 genes within the S. pastorianus genome. Specificity of probes was validated using mRNA from S. cerevisiae and from S. eubayanus. Probes were used to analyse gene expression during 15°P wort fermentations conducted at different temperatures (10–20°C). As well as differential expression of different genes, differential expression of orthologues was also observed during fermentation. The differences suggest that, where two forms of the gene exist, either one will dominate (as with AGT1) or expression will be staggered (MALx2), possibly to maximize transport and for efficient degradation of sugars.

We describe the essential features of a novel testbed, code-named WIND-FLEX and developed under the auspices of the EU IST research program, whose primary goal has been to define and explore concepts related to radio flexibility, with application to an OFDM-based short-range indoor radio transceiver design. The emphasis has been on the profitable use of software and DSP tools for the purpose of demonstrating adaptivity and reconfigurability features, primarily for the lower layers (i.e., PHY and DLC/MAC layers). The topics covered briefly herein include the meaning of the terms in the present context, their instantiation in the design, their contribution to an optimized low-transmit-power scheme, the novel elements required in order to achieve it, the contribution to a guaranteed QoS philosophy, and the relationship of the testbed to broader software-defined-radio concepts.
