30. One-Year Water-Stable and Porous Bi(III) Halide Semiconductor with Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial Performance

Abstract

Hybrid metal halide semiconductors are a unique family of materials with immense potential for numerous applications. For this to materialize, environmental stability and toxicity deficiencies must be simultaneously addressed. We report here a porous, visible light semiconductor, namely, (DHS)Bi2I8(DHS = [2.2.2] cryptand), which consists of nontoxic, earth-abundant elements, and is water-stable for more than a year. Gas- and vapor-sorption studies revealed that it can selectively and reversibly adsorb H2O and D2O at room temperature (RT) while remaining impervious to N2and CO2. Solid-state NMR measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified the incorporation of H2O and D2O in the molecular cages, validating the porous nature. In addition to porosity, the material exhibits broad band-edge light emission centered at 600 nm with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 99 nm, which is maintained after 6 months of immersion in H2O. Moreover, (DHS)Bi2I8exhibits bacteriocidal action against three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains. This performance, coupled with the recorded water stability and porous nature, renders it suitable for a plethora of applications, from solid-state batteries to water purification and disinfection.

Abstract

Fused-ring core non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), designated "Y-series", have enabled high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs) achieving over 18% power conversion efficiency (PCE). Since the introduction of these NFAs, much effort has been expended to understand the reasons for their exceptional performance. While several studies have identified key optoelectronic properties that govern high PCEs, little is known about the molecular level origins of large variations in performance, spanning from 5 to 18% PCE, e.g., in the case of PM6:Y6 OSCs. Here, we introduce a combined solid-state NMR, crystallography, and molecular modelling approach to elucidate the atomic-scale interactions in Y6 crystals, thin films, and PM6:Y6 bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blends. We show the Y6 morphologies in BHJ blends are not governed by the morphology in neat films or single crystals. Notably, PM6:Y6 blends processed from different solvents self-assemble into different structures and morphologies, whereby the relative orientations of the sidechains and end groups of the Y6 molecules to their fused-ring cores play a crucial role in determining the resulting morphology and overall performance of the solar cells. The molecular-level understanding of BHJs enabled by this approach will guide the engineering of next-generation NFAs for stable and efficient OSCs. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract

In this work we report a strategy for generating porosity in hybrid metal halide materials using molecular cages that serve as both structure‐directing agents and counter‐cations. Reaction of the [2.2.2] cryptand (DHS) linker with PbII in acidic media gave rise to the first porous and water‐stable 2D metal halide semiconductor (DHS)2Pb5Br14. The corresponding material is stable in water for a year, while gas and vapor‐sorption studies revealed that it can selectively and reversibly adsorb H2O and D2O at room temperature (RT). Solid‐state NMR measurements and DFT calculations verified the incorporation of H2O and D2O in the organic linker cavities and shed light on their molecular configuration. In addition to porosity, the material exhibits broad light emission centered at 617 nm with a full width at half‐maximum (FWHM) of 284 nm (0.96 eV). The recorded water stability is unparalleled for hybrid metal halide and perovskite materials, while the generation of porosity opens new pathways towards unexplored applications (e.g. solid‐state batteries) for this class of hybrid semiconductors. Abstract

Environmental stability is a major bottleneck of perovskite solar cells. Only a handful of studies are investigating the effect of moisture on the structural degradation of the absorber. They mostly rely on ex situ experiments and on completely degraded samples, which restrict the assessment on initial and final stage. By combining in situ X‐ray diffraction under controlled 85% relative humidity, and live observations of the water‐induced degradation using liquid‐cell transmission electron microscopy, we reveal two competitive degradation paths leading on one hand to the decomposition of state‐of‐the‐art mixed cation/anion (Cs0.05(MA0.17FA0.83)0.95Pb(Br0.17I0.83)3 (CsMAFA) into PbI2 through a dissolution/recrystallization mechanism and, on the other hand, to a non‐equilibrium phase segregation leading to CsPb2Br5 and a Cesium‐poor/iodide‐rich Cs0.05‐x(MA0.17FA0.83)0.95Pb(Br0.17−2yI0.83+2y)3 perovskite. This degradation mechanism is corroborated at atomic‐scale resolution through solid‐state 1H and 133Cs NMR analysis. Exposure to moisture leads to a film containing important heterogeneities in terms of morphology, photoluminescence intensities, and lifetimes. Our results provide new insights and consensus that complex perovskite compositions, though very performant as champion devices, are comparatively metastable, a trait that limits the chances to achieve long‐term stability. Abstract

In this paper, a fuzzy-PID controller for DC–DC boost converter at variable irradiation level in the solar photovoltaic (PV) system has been designed. The problem that PV system has is that the output voltage depends on weather conditions, mainly temperature and irradiance level, which eventually changes the load operating point. Classical controllers such as PI and PID have been used previously that have undesirable transient response. Here, a hybrid fuzzy logic based PID controller is analyzed and designed to control the DC–DC converter acting as a regulator. This proposed model eliminates overshoots and oscillations of the output voltage and ensures maximum amount of power extraction from PV system. The transient response parameters and steady-state errors are analyzed to conclude the benefits of such a control system. The achieved results at different levels of irradiation at constant temperature are shown. Analysis of results supports the advantage and validity of the hybrid fuzzy-PID controller.

Abstract

Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is one of the pioneer testing bodies administered by Indian government to evaluate the emissions and fuel efficiency using empirical formulas through Indian Driving Cycle (IDC) test. But based on real-time environment testing, the values rarely match; in this work, fuel efficiency monitoring system is being developed to calculate: fuel efficiency based on load applied on vehicle, speed of the vehicle, tire pressure, road type, road traffic conditions, power management system, and possible distance coverable, based on the fuel level. Developed system is the result of fusing software simulation and hardware components in LabVIEW graphical coding language where Arduino UNO is embedded into the system as hardware data acquisition component. The function of fuel efficiency-monitoring system is to monitor the fuel present in fuel tank and based on the input from load sensor, type of road conditions, traffic conditions, power management, calculate the efficiency of the fuel, and mileage of the vehicle at given instance of time. Based on the results obtained, calculated value from simulation setup deviates by 5.49% by set standard values. And comparative analysis of derived value from simulation and real-time tested values acquired from the Honda Jazz vx (diesel) gives the results with an accuracy of 94.51%.
