1. On Compact Book Storage in Libraries.

Abstract

The optimal storage of books by size in libraries is considered in this paper. It is shown that for a given collection of books of various sizes, the optimum number of shelf heights to use can be determined by finding the shortest path in an equivalent network. Applications of this model to inventory control, assortment and packaging problems are also given. An extension of the basic model which minimizes the wasted shelf space in libraries is also discussed (Author)

Abstract

A general model for multiattribute Bayesian acceptance sampling plans is developed which incorporates the multiattribute utility function of a decision maker in its design. The model accommodates various dispositions of rejected lots such as screening and scrapping. The disposition of rejected lots is shown to have a substantial impact on the solution approach used and on the ease of incorporation of multiattribute utility functions in terms of their measurement complexity, functional form, and parameter estimation. For example, if all attributes are screenable upon rejection, and the prior distributions of lot quality on each attribute are independent, then an optimal multiattribute sampling plan can be obtained simply by solving for an optimal single sampling plan on each attribute independently. A discrete search algorithm, based on pattern search, is also developed and shown to be very effective in obtaining an optimal multiattribute inspection plan when such separability cannot be accomplished. 12. A Linear Programming Model with Shortage Costs for Energy Planning and Allocation

Abstract

Since the energy shortage is only a recent phenomenon, most of the quantitative models for energy planning have assumed that the demands can always be met by increasing imports. In this paper, the concept of an energy shortage cost is introduced, and a quantitative energy model with shortages is developed to study the interfuel competition, and optimal allocation policies during an energy shortage. The solution is approached through linear programming methods. In addition to the societal shortage cost for energy, other special features of our model include consideration of all forms of energy resources and new technologies of energy production. The model is illustrated through a number of case studies on an economic region using realistic energy data. Through these applications the model is shown to be a useful tool to assess the impact of future energy shortages, higher fuel prices, introduction of newer technologies, and various allocation policies.

Abstract

The thesis applies the notion of contagious distributions in the inventory control of new products and seasonal or style goods, which have an underlying 'true contagion' for their demands, viz, the influence of past demands on future occurrence of demands. A contagious distribution is derived by assuming a modified Poisson process where the demand rate at any instant of time depends on the past demands. A discussion on estimation of the various parameters of the contagious distribution is included. Using this contagious distribution, a multi-period inventory model is discussed for new product lines with a 'fixed periodic review policy.'

Abstract

An experimental study to compare the simplex method and the Lemke's method to solve linear programs is made. The M3 code for simplex method and the author's code for the Lemke method were used in the study. Comparison was made only with regard to the number of iterations each method takes and our little study shows encouraging results about the superiority of Lemke method, but no general recommendation is made by the author due to size of the study and data. A by-product of our study is a complementary pivot algorithm to solve linear programs which is a modification of the Lemke's method and which saves a considerable storage and time of computation.
