Introduction: The suicide attempt in children and young populations is a serious health problem in Cuba and the world. Objective: To characterize sociodemographic and epidemiologically the patients aged 6 and 18 with suicide attempt. Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 145 children and adolescents was carried out, who were admitted to Dr. Antonio María Beguez César Southern Children Teaching Hospital in Santiago de Cuba due to suicide attempt, during 2018. Each patient's individual medical records constituted the source of information and demographic and epidemiologic variables were selected. Results: The females showed the highest risk of suicide attempt (27.9 for each 10 000); likewise, the 15 to 18 age group (64.8%) and the psychoactive drug ingestion (84.1%) as a method to try to kill oneself, because it was easily accessible, prevailed. Family conflicts (60.6%) and the lack of family support (46.2%) were notable among the main factors associated with suicidal behavior. Conclusions: Children and adolescents in this series came from families with conflicts and domestic violence, which, along with the lack of the family support, identified in their environment, could have influenced the suicide attempt.

Introduction: Noncommunicable diseases represent one of the greatest challenges in the development of nations in the 21st century. Objective: To characterize a population from Santiago de Cuba municipality according to lifestyles. Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out during the year 2020, of 1265 residents in Santiago de Cuba municipality selected from a randomized, proportional and stratified sample design, whom a survey that included sociodemographic and lifestyle aspects was applied. The information obtained was processed by using summary measures for qualitative and quantitative variables. Results: In the series, it was determined that 24.3% of Santiago population used tobacco, predominantly in men (57.7%), and that 38.8% were exposed to other people's tobacco smoke at home. Likewise, alcohol use appeared in 46.8%, walking to get around was the physical activity mostly carried out in 43.2%, and overweight and obesity prevailed in 59.3%. Conclusions: In Santiago de Cuba municipality, tobacco consumption, inadequate dietary habits, low physical activity, overweight and obesity were identified as unhealthy lifestyles that increase the risk of suffering from noncommunicable diseases.

Introduction: The infection and the syndrome provoked by the human immune deficiency virus constitute the greatest problems lived worldwide. Objective: To estimate the global survival from seropositive people to the human immune deficiency virus, diagnosed in the health area belonging to Josué País García Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba. Method: An observational, descriptive, of serial cases investigation, of 26 seropositive people to the human immune deficiency virus was carried out, they were diagnosed from January, 1998 to December, 2008, and residents in the mentioned health area in the moment of the diagnosis. The main analyzed variables were: sex, age, clinical stage when diagnosed and adherence to the antiretroviral therapy of high effectiveness. Results: In the case material there was a prevalence of the male sex, homosexuals, the diagnoses carried out during the period of clinical latency and those no adherent to the treatment; also, it was evidenced that the mean time of survival surpassed half of the maximum time lived by the total of those investigated and that variables as age, clinical stage when diagnosed and adherence to the treatment didn't have an important level of statistical significance, taking into account the probability of surviving during the period of preset time. The achieved global survival was of 92.3 %. Conclusion: The obtained level of global survival surpassed the national and international standards.

Introduction: Hypertension is a serious disorder that increases in a significant way the risk of suffering heart, brain, kydney diseases and others, at the same time that constitutes one of the main causes of early death in the world. Objective: To characterize patients with hypertension in Santiago de Cuba. Method: A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 210 patients with hypertension, belonging to 30 family doctor´s offices of Santiago de Cuba, Contramaestre and San Luis municipalities of the mentioned county was carried out. The main variables analyzed were: age, sex, occupation, skin color, clinical course period of the disease, personal pathological history, nutritional evaluation, as well as control and treatment. Results: In the series the female sex, 65-79 age group, diabetes mellitus as personal pathological history prevailed, as well as overweight and obesity according to the nutritional evaluation. On the other hand, 57.1 % suffered from the disease for 10 years and 85.7 % had been indicated non pharmacological treatment; while 79.5 % didn't make physical exercises and just 50.5 % were classified as controlled. Conclusions: The non control of blood pressure in the hypertensive population of this territory exposes them to the emergence of cardiovascular complications, with the repercussion that bears for the individual, family and society.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of the 9 211 dead patients due to all causes was carried out in Santiago de Cuba province during 2017, with the aim of describing the mortality profile in that period. In the series an increment of the general mortality was observed when compared to 2016; also, as main causes of death there were heart diseases, malignant tumors and cerebrovascular diseases. The municipalities that prevailed in the mortality profile were Contramaestre, San Luis, Songo-La Maya, Santiago de Cuba and III Frente, mainly due to heart diseases. On the other hand, the greatest risk of dying due to malignant tumors in the female patients obeyed to the localization in lung, breast and intestine, except in the rectum; in the men, in prostate, lung and colon, respectively. It is recommended to direct the efforts in health according to the stratified risk in this province.

Se realizó una investigación de evaluación de sistemas y servicios de salud en el Policlínico Docente "José Martí Pérez" de Santiago de Cuba, durante el 2009, a fin de evaluar la calidad de la atención médica (38 médicos y 38 enfermeras de la familia) a las 58 personas que viven con virus de inmunodeficiencia humana/sida en esta área, según las dimensiones científico-técnica, de satisfacción de los usuarios, conocimientos de los proveedores de salud y efectividad. Mediante la creación de un grupo de expertos, que establecieron criterios explícitos, descriptivos y normativos, construyeron indicadores y prefijaron estándares para valorar aspectos seleccionados de la estructura, el proceso y los resultados; se constató que existían deficiencias en la estructura de los consultorios médicos, con limitación de los recursos materiales e insuficientes conocimientos de los prestatarios del sector en aspectos fundamentales de la epidemiología de la infección y del seguimiento a estos afectados, los cuales constituyeron los indicadores de peores resultados y además influyeron en que la evaluación de los indicadores de impacto seleccionados fuera inadecuada. Finalmente, se recomendó llevar a cabo actividades de capacitación sistemáticamente para los proveedores de salud.

Se efectuó un estudio descriptivo y transversal de 949 pacientes con conducta suicida, de los cuales fallecieron 126 por esa causa en la provincia de Santiago de Cuba durante el 2010, con un incremento en el citado año y predominio en el municipio de Julio Antonio Mella, a fin de caracterizarles según variables de interés epidemiológico y así determinar la morbilidad y mortalidad atribuibles a ese comportamiento. En la casuística primaron el sexo masculino y el método de suicidio por ahorcamiento; sin embargo, el intento suicida preponderó entre las féminas, con mayor riesgo en niñas y adolescentes, quienes decidieron ingerir preferentemente psicofármacos. La realización de intervenciones educativas en los grupos poblacionales más afectados podría fortalecer los mecanismos de afrontamiento ante situaciones estresantes.A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 949 patients with suicidal behaviour, of which 126 died due to that cause in Santiago de Cuba was carried out during the 2010, with an increase in the mentioned year and prevalence in «Julio Antonio Mella» municipality, in order to characterize them according to variables of epidemiological interest and in this way to determine the morbidity and mortality attributable to that behavior. Male sex and the suicide by hanging prevailed in the case material; however, the suicidal attempt prevailed among females, with a greater risk in girls and adolescents, who decided to take preferably psychodrugs. Carrying out educational interventions in the most affected populational groups could strengthen the facing mechanisms in stressing situations.

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal sobre la mortalidad por cáncer en la provincia de Santiago de Cuba durante 2010, dada por 1 819 fallecidos por esa causa, para una tasa de 173,9 por cada 100 000 habitantes; cifra aumentada respecto al año anterior, con predominio de la sobremortalidad masculina, de los ancianos de 75 y más años, así como también de los municipios de Mella y II Frente. Los tumores malignos más comunes en las mujeres se localizaron en pulmón, mama y colon, mientras que en los hombres se diagnosticaron preponderantemente en próstata, pulmón y colon, por lo cual se recomienda dirigir y planificar las acciones sanitarias según el riesgo de mortalidad estratificado en cada municipio de esta provincia.A descriptive and cross-sectional study on mortality due to cancer in Santiago de Cuba province during 2010 was carried out, taking into account 1 819 deceased at a rate of 173,9 every 100 000 inhabitants. This rate increased compared to the previous year with a male mortality predominance of elderly aged 75 and over, as well as mortality in Mella and II Frente municipalities. Most common malignancies in women were detected in lungs, breast, and colon; while in men, they were preponderantly diagnosed in prostate, lungs, and colon. For this reason, it is recommendable addressing and planning health actions according to the stratified mortality risk in each municipality of this province.

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal para evaluar la calidad en la ejecución del Programa de Prevención y Control de la Conducta Suicida en el Policlínico "Mario Muñoz Monroy" de Santiago de Cuba durante el 2007, teniendo en cuenta el desempeño cientificotécnico y la satisfacción de los usuarios. Mediante la creación de un grupo de expertos se establecieron criterios explícitos, descriptivos y normativos, así como se construyeron indicadores y prefijaron estándares. Se constató que la estructura no garantizaba un idóneo cumplimiento del Programa y existía insuficiente competencia profesional de los prestatarios del Sector, debido a la poca capacitación e insatisfacción con respecto a su contenido, todo lo cual pudo influir en los resultados inadecuados de los indicadores previstos.A descriptive and cross-sectional study to evaluate the quality in the implementation of the Prevention and Control Program of the Suicidal Behavior was carried out in "Mario Muñoz Monroy" Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba during 2007, taking into account the scientific technical performance and the satisfaction of the users. By means of the creation of a group of experts explicit, descriptive and normative approaches were established, as well as indicators were built and standards were preset. It was verified that the structure didn't guarantee a suitable implementation of the Program and there was insufficient professional competence in workers of the Sector, due to the little training and dissatisfaction with regard to its content, all this could influence in the inadequate results of the foreseen indicators.
