- Abstract
The authoritarian menace to democratic values has become one of Europe's principal strategic concerns. This geopolitical challenge is altering the place of democracy support within European foreign and security policies. The European Union and European governments have begun to adopt a more defensive form of democracy support that reflects their evolving security concerns. This heralds a new kind of nexus between democracy and security agendas. As yet, however, European governments are not pursuing this defensive form of democracy policy in a way that is likely to further their long-term strategic interests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
