J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2019-We examined the concurrent validity of single-frequency (SF) and dual-frequency (DF) bioelectrical impedance (BIA) scales among Hispanic women participating in a community-based health promotion program in Arizona. Hispanic women (N = 14), age 31.9 ± 6.5 years old, with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 31.1 ± 8.1 kg·m, were measured using SF BIA, DF BIA, BMI, and skinfold calipers in 2017. Intrarater reliability and concurrent validity were calculated. Bland-Altman plots examined agreement of each BIA measure within measurement tools, between tools, and with skinfold calipers. Scatter plots were used to examine agreement between BIAs and BMI. Short-term intrarater reliability was perfect within measurements for SF and DF BIAs (α = 1.0). The coefficient of variation within a measurement tool (CV%) was slightly smaller for DF BIA (0.2%; n = 13) than for SF BIA (0.3%; n = 14). Concurrent validity measures revealed that DF (M = 39.3 ± 7.3% fat; within sample CV% = 18.6; n = 14) and SF (M = 39.4 ± 7.5% body fat; within sample CV% = 19.0; n = 14) BIAs were highly correlated (Pearson r = 0.885; p < 0.001; n = 14) and had an absolute mean difference of -0.2 ± 3.5% fat (range 0.7-6.0% fat; n = 14). The CV% between BIA measures was 5.4%. Dual-frequency and SF BIAs were both strongly correlated with BMI and skinfolds. There was evidence of bias between skinfolds and both BIA measures. Strength and conditioning practitioners should feel confident in using either SF or DF BIA measures with Hispanic women who participate in training interventions in community-based settings, because they offer similar measurement value.

Objective:To examine differences in the availability, variety and distribution of foods and beverages sold at street food stands (SFS) across neighbourhood income levels in Mexico City.Design:Cross-sectional.Setting:Twenty neighbourhoods representing low-, middle- and high-income levels in Mexico City.Participants:Direct observations of SFS (n 391).Results:The availability of healthy foods such as fruits/vegetables was high in middle- and high-income neighbourhoods, whereas the availability of unhealthy foods such as processed snacks was higher in low-income neighbourhoods. However, statistically significant differences in food availability across neighbourhoods were only observed for dairy and processed snack items (P < 0·05). Similarly, differences in variety were only observed for cereal and processed snacks (P < 0·05). No statistically significant differences were seen for variety of fruits/vegetable across neighbourhood income levels (P > 0·05). No statistically significant differences across neighbourhood income levels were observed for beverage availability and variety (P > 0·05). Although street foods and beverages were often distributed near homes, public transportation centres and worksites, no differences were observed across neighbourhood income levels (P > 0·05).Conclusions:Findings suggest that SFS can be a source of both unhealthy foods and healthy foods for communities across neighbourhoods in Mexico City. Additional studies are needed to assess the relationship between street food and beverage availability, and consumption.

Per principles outlined in the Belmont Report, research involving human subjects should minimize risks to participants and maximize benefits to participants and society. Recruitment of participants should be equitable. Once enrolled, participants have the right to withdraw at any point. Researchers must balance these principles with pressures to meet enrollment goals and, in the context of repeated-measures designs, retain participants across time. The purpose of this perspective is to describe the approach and corresponding activities for recruiting and retaining underrepresented and vulnerable populations that are the focus of a transdisciplinary academic research center. To this effort, we offer diverse disciplinary backgrounds, experience working with a wide range of populations (from infants to older adults and across multiple health conditions), and spanning a variety of research designs. Effective strategies offered include partnering with community entities, approaching potential participants where they are and at a time of readiness, using population-appropriate modes of communication and data collection, conducting study activities in familiar settings and at convenient times, maintaining frequent contact, and offering meaningful incentives. These strategies are consistent with population-specific reports found in the extant literature and underscore their cross-cutting nature, with adaptations based on participant and community partner needs and preferences.

The COVID-19 crisis and parallel Black Lives Matter movement have amplified longstanding systemic injustices among people of color (POC). POC have been differentially affected by COVID-19, reflecting the disproportionate burden of ongoing chronic health challenges associated with socioeconomic inequalities and unhealthy behaviors, including a lack of physical activity. Clear and well-established benefits link daily physical activity to health and well-being—physical, mental, and existential. Despite these benefits, POC face additional barriers to participation. Thus, increasing physical activity among POC requires additional considerations so that POC can receive the same opportunities to safely participate in physical activity as Americans who are White. Framed within the Ecologic Model of Physical Activity, this commentary briefly describes health disparities in COVID-19, physical activity, and chronic disease experienced by POC; outlines underlying putative mechanisms that connect these disparities; and offers potential solutions to reduce these disparities. As behavioral medicine leaders, we advocate that solutions must redirect the focus of behavioral research toward community-informed and systems solutions.

We examined individual and parental demographics and home environment factors associated with locomotor skills in predominantly Hispanic preschool-aged children. We used questionnaires to survey parents, included inquiries regarding parenting practices, parents’ physical activity levels, and home-based physical activity resources; and we administered the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) and the CHAMPS Motor Skills Protocol (CMSP) to children to measure the quantity and quality of their locomotor skills. Participants were 144 parents and their children (78.9% Hispanic, 49.3% girls) recruited from urban, community-based childcare and education centers. We examined the relationship between survey measures and PACER and CMSP scores with forward-selection stepwise linear regression models. Overall, 142 children completed the PACER, and 91 completed the CMSP. At the individual level, a child’s age was positively associated with both PACER and CMSP scores, and girls had lower PACER scores than boys. In the home environment, parental promotion of more screen time was associated with a higher children’s PACER score. In addition, higher parent concern for children’s safety was associated with a lower PACER score. We identified several physical activity promoting parent practices as new home environment factors related to the preschool-aged children’s locomotor development. Since its inception in 2016, the establishment of learning communities led by senior Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) members has been central to the SBM’s Mid-Career Leadership Institute (Institute). At the beginning of an initial two-day intensive workshop, groups of approximately six fellows are placed together, and one or two senior SBM members are asked to lead group mentoring. Senior SBM members serve as mentors during quarterly calls that are conducted over the year in order for group members to develop and present an individual leadership project at the following annual meeting. Group mentoring relies on the social dynamic that emerges from the group’s own social norms and roles; it is designed to advance the careers of group members. To our knowledge, this is the first commentary describing a program of formal group mentoring for mid-career leadership development in a professional association. Based on the authors’ experience as mentors, thematic and descriptive analyses of the initial workshop evaluations, and contemporaneous notes, we discuss the structure, process, and project outcomes of the formal group mentoring in SBM’s Institute. Early process evaluation of the Institute suggests that the Fellows benefitted from the group mentoring experience.

Environmental characteristics of early care and education centers (ECECs) are an important context for preschool-aged children’s development, but few studies have examined their relationship with children’s locomotor skills. We examined the association between characteristics of the ECEC environment with quantitatively (i.e., product-based) and qualitatively (i.e., process-based) measured locomotor skills, using the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) and the locomotor portion of the Children’s Activity and Movement in Preschool Study (CHAMPS) motor skills protocol (CMSP), respectively. ECEC characteristics included outdoor and indoor play environment quality, outdoor and indoor play equipment, screen-time environment quality, and policy environment quality. Mean (SD) scores for the PACER (n = 142) and CSMP (n = 91) were 3.7 ± 2.3 laps and 19.0 ± 5.5 criteria, respectively, which were moderately correlated with each other (Pearson r = 0.5; p < 0.001). Linear regression models revelated that a better policy environment score was associated with fewer PACER laps. Better outdoor play and screen-time environment quality scores and more outdoor play equipment were positively associated with higher CMSP scores. ECEC environments that reflect best practice guidelines may be opportunities for locomotor skills development in preschool-aged children. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03261492 (8/25/17).

Physical activity and nutrition preschool programming must involve parents in positive long-term healthy habits. This paper describes parent outreach in the Sustainability via Active Garden Education (SAGE) study. Newsletters were sent home with children to promote family opportunities to increase physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake. The content was generated via a community advisory board participatory process. Messages linked SAGE curriculum topics with home and community activities. Parents rated frequency of receipt, helpfulness, satisfaction, and use of content. Most participants were Hispanic (>78%) and women (>95%). Most reported receiving newsletters; nearly all reported that they were helpful. Favorite newsletter components included recipes, pictures of their children and seasonal produce spotlights. Most reported doing physical activities from the newsletters (51.9%). Few reported doing featured physical activity (8.9%) and fruit and vegetable (12.7%) community activities. Newsletter outreach methods are a simple strategy to add value to preschool-based interventions promoting healthy families.

Studies in the U.S. and Mexico have observed the clustering of food resources around schools, which may promote the use of these resources. Our study characterized and compared school neighborhood food environments in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and Houston, Texas, and examined socioeconomic disparities in food resource availability across school neighborhoods. We used the Goods and Services Inventory to document the frequency and type of resources within each school neighborhood. School neighborhoods in Guadalajara had significantly more food resources than those in Houston. We found that convenience stores and table service restaurants were the most prevalent food resources in school neighborhoods in both cities. Guadalajara school neighborhoods had a higher prevalence of supermarkets and grocery stores than Houston. Low-income school neighborhoods in Guadalajara with poorly educated residents had significantly more food carts than high-income neighborhoods with more educated residents. In Houston, we found significantly more fast food restaurants and convenience stores in school neighborhoods with more educated residents than school neighborhoods with less educated residents. The influence of food resources within school neighborhoods on the dietary habits of schoolchildren should be further explored in both the U.S. and Mexico. The characterization of school neighborhood food environments can inform policymakers, city planners, and school officials who seek to implement policies to create healthier food environments.

Screen-based activities are associated with increased risk of obesity and contribute to physical inactivity and poor dietary habits. The primary aim of this study was to examine the associations among screen-based activities, physical activity, and dietary habits in school-aged children in Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Mexico City, Mexico. The secondary aim was to examine these associations across sex. The School Physical Activity and Nutrition survey was used to assess screen-based activities (TV watching, video game use, computer use), physical activity, and dietary habits. Organized activity/sports participation, unhealthy dietary habits, and household income were correlated with screen-based activities. While TV watching was associated with decreased participation in organized activity/sports participation, computer and video game use was associated with increased organized activity/sports participation. Boys engaged in more TV watching and video game use compared to girls. All screen-based activities were associated with age among boys, whereas video game and computer use were associated with higher income among girls. These findings suggest a need for sex- and age-specific strategies that acknowledge the differential use of screen-based activities across sex and age. Future research should continue to identify underlying correlates linking screen-based activities with health behaviors to inform strategies to reduce screen-time in Mexican children.

Objective:Approximately one in ten adults under the age of 65 in the USA has a mobility impairing disability. People with mobility impairment generally have poorer dietary habits contributing to obesity and related negative health outcomes. This article presents the psychometric properties of the Food Environment Assessment Survey Tool (FEAST) instrument that measures barriers to accessing healthy food from the perspective of people with mobility impairment (PMI).Design:The current study presents cross-sectional data from two sequential independent surveys.Setting:Surveys were administered online to a national sample of PMI.Participants:Participants represented PMI living throughout the USA. The pilot FEAST survey involved 681 participants and was used to shape the final instrument; 25 % completed a retest survey. After following empirically and theoretically guided item reduction strategies, the final FEAST instrument was administered to a separate sample of 304 PMI.Results:The final twenty-seven-item FEAST instrument includes items measuring Neighbourhood Environment, Home Environment, Personal Control and Access to Support (Having Help, Food Delivery Services, Parking/Transportation). The final four scales had acceptable intra-class correlations, indicating that the scales could be used as reliable measures of the hypothesised constructs in future studies.Conclusions:The FEAST instrument is the first of its kind developed to assess the food environment from the perspective of PMI themselves. Future studies would benefit from using this measure in research and practice to help guide the development of policy aimed at improving access to healthy food and promoting healthy eating in community-dwelling PMI.

Summary To prevent obesity among Latino youth in the United States and Latin America, it is necessary to understand the specific context and interplay of physical activity (PA) and the built environment (BE). This paper aims to advance the research agenda of BE and PA for obesity prevention in Latin America and among Latino youth in the United States by (1) identifying environmental indicators to inform the design of interventions and policy, (2) identifying interdisciplinary methodological approaches for the study of the complex association between BE and PA, and (3) presenting case studies of PA‐promoting BE programs. A group of U.S. and Latin American scientists collaboratively worked to propose innovative indicators of the BE, methodological approaches for the study of the complex association between BE and PA, and review case studies of PA‐promoting BE programs in both regions. The results identified gaps in knowledge, proposed environmental indicators (e.g., landscape, street design, mobility patterns, and crime and safety), reviewed methodological approaches (social network analysis, citizen science methods), and case studies illustrating PA‐promoting BE programs (i.e., play streets, active school transport, and school setting interventions). The obesity prevention among Latino and Latin American youth requires advanced research on BE and PA addressing context‐specific priorities and exchanging lessons learned.

The Niagara Escarpment is a geological feature comprised of highly fractured Ordovician and Silurian shales and carbonates stretching through southern Ontario and parts of the north-eastern United States. Differential erosion of the shale and carbonate strata has generated a steep cliff face bisecting the city of Hamilton, Ontario. Fractures occur throughout the cliff face and result in the formation of loose blocks of rock that are subject to erosion through rockfalls. This presents structural stability issues and an associated geohazard, which is of particular concern due to the proximity of the escarpment to city infrastructure. Previous work has alluded towards the role of geologic fractures in controlling erosion and stability of the Niagara Escarpment, but the causal mechanisms and extent to which these processes operate remains unclear. As such, the aim of this study is to quantify and analyse fracture networks using a combined field and numerical modelling-based approach to understand the distribution and nature of fractures throughout the escarpment, their connectivity, fluid flow properties, and relationship to structural stability. The location, orientation, and aperture of fractures were systematically quantified and documented around Hamilton. Data were plotted and analysed using the software Orient to identify clusters representative of fracture sets and to calculate average fracture set orientations and the respective confidence intervals. Three primary sets of geological fractures were identified including: 1) a near-vertical bedding confined set oriented north-south, 2) a near-vertical bedding confined set oriented east-west and 3) sedimentary bedding planes which have facilitated fracture migration and controlled resultant fracture geometry. Discrete fracture network modelling of these fracture sets in MOVE highlights their high degree of connectivity and indicates that the distribution and nature of these discontinuities are predominant controls on the locations and sizes of rock fragments generated on the cliff face resulting in rockfalls. Moreover, fracture-controlled porosity is a significant contributor to fluid flow throughout the escarpment. We conclude that geologic fractures present a first-order control on the stability of the Niagara Escarpment near Hamilton.

Little research has been conducted to clarify the mechanism, extent, or factors involved in the fracturing of rocks exposed along the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario. Of particular interest are the effects of fluctuating temperatures during region’s cold winters which may be a contributor to the formation and expansion of fractures within these rocks. The results of a preliminary field-based study of temperature changes in fractured sedimentary rocks exposed at several sites along the Escarpment in Hamilton, Ontario are reported here. The objectives of the study were to examine the characteristics of operant thermal processes and to determine the effectiveness of mechanisms such as freeze-thaw and thermal stress in contributing to fracture formation and development. Fractured dolostone units were identified at three field sites along the escarpment that varied in their aspect, vegetation, and proximity to water. At each site, temperature probes were affixed to the exposed rock surface and inserted into a nearby fracture. Temperature measurements were taken at one-minute intervals throughout the winter of 2020-21. In-situ field measurements of thermal changes within fractured dolostones on the escarpment were supplemented with recordings of rock surface and interior temperatures taken from unfractured dolostone blocks placed in a ‘controlled’ outdoor environment throughout the winter. Initial results from the escarpment probes in the early winter show frequent, rapid shifts from warm to sub-zero temperatures and indicate that changes in temperature recorded at the rock surface closely follow diurnal atmospheric oscillations in both magnitude and timing. However, temperature changes recorded within fractures are less extreme and show a temporal lag. Temperature fluctuations recorded at the field site with the highest degree of exposure, a southeasterly aspect, and little vegetation cover, are significantly higher and show larger thermal responses within fractures. Temperature fluctuations recorded from unfractured blocks in the ‘controlled’ outdoor environment show similar diurnal trends to those recorded on the escarpment but with reduced differential between temperatures at the block surface and interior. Together, these data indicate that temperature fluctuations sufficient to generate freeze-thaw cycles are abundant during the early winter months, temperature variability within fractures does occur, and slope aspect and exposure plays an important role in the determining the magnitude of diurnal temperature fluctuations experienced by surface rocks on the escarpment. The role of thermal stress in fracture development, created by rapid and substantial thermal changes, has yet to be determined.

Prevenir la obesidad entre los jovenes latinos que viven en Estados Unidos y en paises latinoamericanos requiere reconocer la especificidad de los contextos y las interacciones entre actividad fisica (AF) y entorno construido (EC). El objetivo de este articulo es avanzar en la agenda de investigacion sobre el EC y la AF con el fin de prevenir la obesidad en Latinoamerica y entre los jovenes latinos de Estados Unidos mediante (1) la identificacion de indicadores del entorno que contribuyan en el diseno de intervenciones y politicas; (2) la identificacion de enfoques metodologicos interdisciplinarios para el estudio de la relacion compleja que se establece entre el EC y la AF y (3) la presentacion de estudios de casos sobre programas de EC que promueven la AF. Un grupo de cientificos estadounidenses y latinoamericanos trabajo en colaboracion para proponer nuevos indicadores sobre el EC, establecer enfoques metodologicos que permitan estudiar la relacion compleja entre EC y AF, y revisar estudios de caso sobre programas de EC que promueven la AF en ambas regiones. Como resultado, se identificaron lagunas de conocimiento, se propusieron indicadores del entorno (como el paisaje, el diseno de las calles, los patrones de movilidad, la delincuencia y la seguridad), se revisaron enfoques metodologicos (analisis de redes sociales, metodos de ciencia ciudadana) y se analizaron estudios de caso de programas del EC que promueven la AF (calles para el juego, desplazamiento activo a la escuela e intervenciones en el entorno escolar). La prevencion de la obesidad entre los jovenes latinos y latinoamericanos exige una investigacion avanzada del EC y de la AF que aborde las prioridades especificas de cada contexto y permita intercambiar las lecciones aprendidas.

Background This study describes a method for harmonizing data collected with different tools to compute a rating of compliance with national recommendations for school physical activity (PA) and nutrition environments. Methods We reviewed questionnaire items from 84 elementary schools that participated in the Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration (CORD) project, which was 3 distinct childhood obesity prevention projects in 7 communities in California, Massachusetts, and Texas. Each project used tools specific to its programs, schools, and communities. While this approach increased the feasibility of data collection, it created a challenge with the need to combine data across projects. We evaluated all questionnaire items and retained only those items that assessed one or more recommendations and constructed several items to indicate compliance or noncompliance with the respective associated recommendations. Results Ten constructed items covered 11 of the 20 recommendations. Analysis indicated that the scores detected variability in compliance both among communities and among school within communities. Conclusions The scores captured differences in compliance with the national recommendations at multiple levels. Our method, designed for creating common scores, may be useful in integrated data analysis, systematic reviews, or future studies requiring harmonizing of data collected via different tools.

Street food stands (SFS) are an understudied element of the food environment. Previous SFS studies have not used a rigorous approach to document the availability, density, and distribution of SFS across neighborhood income levels and points of access in Mexico City. A random sample (n = 761) of street segments representing 20 low-, middle-, and high-income neighborhoods were assessed using geographic information system (GIS) and ground-truthing methods. All three income levels contained SFS. However, SFS availability and density were higher in middle-income neighborhoods. The distribution of SFS showed that SFS were most often found near homes, transportation centers, and worksites. SFS availability near schools may have been limited by local school policies. Additional studies are needed to further document relationships between SFS availability, density, and distribution, and current structures and processes.

Breast cancer survivors (BCS), particularly Latina BCS, experience weight gain and reduced physical activity (PA) post-treatment increasing the risk for recurrence. There is a lack of evidence on the intensity and type of PA needed to engage cultural subgroups and improve clinical outcomes. This study developed and piloted two non-traditional PA interventions among a diverse sample of BCS.Twenty BCS (65% Latina; age 25-75) participated in a 2-arm parallel group-randomized pilot study to test the effects of an 8-week Latin dance and Qigong/Tai Chi intervention on PA and body composition. A seven-day pedometer protocol was used to measure steps/week and a bioelectric impedence scale was used to assess BMI and %body fat. T-tests were used to examine preliminary outcomes across both interventions and within intervention arms.There were no significant changes in steps/week, BMI, or %body fat across or in each separate intervention. A small effect size for increase in steps/day was found among participants in the Qigong/Tai Chi arm (0.10) and low-to-moderate effect sizes for reductions in % body fat overall (0.36), and separately for participants in Latin dance (0.26) and Qigong/Tai Chi (0.46).Latin dance and Qigong/Tai Chi are engaging and acceptable PA modalities that are promising for improving PA and body fat among diverse, high-risk BCS. Our findings highlight the need to continue to reach and engage high-risk BCS, including Latina survivors, using novel, culturally-sensitive PA interventions. Future studies should extend and more rigorously test these novel approaches to improving outcomes associated with recurrence.

Sustainability of intervention programming is challenging to achieve under real world conditions, since few models exist and many studies do not plan far beyond the funding period. Programming content in early care and education centers (ECECs) is often driven by guidelines. However, implementation is very sensitive to contextual factors, such as the setting and implementer (teacher) characteristics. This paper presents the model, definitions, and methodology used for the sustainability action plan capitalizing on a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach, developed for a multi-site, multi-level garden-based childhood obesity prevention study, Sustainability via Active Garden Education (SAGE). The Ecologic Model of Obesity is applied to develop a sustainability action plan (SAP) and accompanying measures to link early care and education (ECE) environment, the community, policies, and classroom practices to an early childhood obesity prevention program. The SAGE SAP provides an example of how to iteratively evaluate and refine sustainability processes for an obesity prevention intervention utilizing CBPR approaches and will be applied to assess the sustainability of SAGE in a cluster randomized controlled trial. This SAP model can also help inform intervention delivery and scalability within ECECs.

Almost 1 in every 8 adults in the U.S. have a physical disability that impairs mobility. This participatory project aimed to identify and describe environmental and personal barriers to healthy eating among people with mobility impairments using a rigorous, structured mixed methodology. Community-dwelling adults with a self-reported mobility impairment (N = 20, M = 40.4 years old, 60% female) participated in nominal group technique focus groups. The Ecologic Model of Obesity grounded stimulus questions asked about barriers to obtaining and preparing healthy food. Participants emphasized common barriers across everyday settings&mdash, focusing, for example, on the ability to reach shelved food inside the home, navigating to and inside stores and restaurants, and using delivery services. Home environments often did not afford suitable spaces for food preparation and storage. Participants reported inadequate transportation and numerous additional barriers in many settings to be able to eat healthfully. Participants reported lack of accessible transportation and architectural barriers inside stores, restaurants, and their own homes, highlighting the need for efforts aimed at improving accessibility and usability. Findings support the use of the Ecologic Model of Obesity to guide research and suggest the need for improvement in assessment practices and policies that enhance access to healthy food.

Although reliable strategies exist to promote healthy habits that reduce childhood obesity, the sustainability of these strategies remains an ongoing public health challenge. This study aimed to identify factors experienced in a large, multisite project aimed at reducing childhood obesity that might contribute to project sustainability. Hypothesized constructs underpinning sustainability included replicability, continuation of benefits, institutionalization, and community capacity. Key informants (n = 27) completed 60 min, in-depth interviews, which were audio recorded and transcribed. Transcripts were first coded using a combined deductive and inductive approach. Four major themes emerged (with numerous subthemes): developing partnerships, challenges to the sustainability of implemented programming, the importance of intervening in multiple settings, and ongoing implementation and evaluation strategies. Replicability of complex childhood obesity interventions is possible when there are strong partnerships. Benefits can continue to be conferred from programming, particularly when evidence-based strategies are used that employ best practices. Implementation is facilitated by institutionalization and policies that buffer challenges, such as staffing or leadership changes. Community capacity both enhances the sustainability of interventions and develops as a result of strengthening partnerships and policies that support childhood obesity programming.

Tracheoesophageal fistulae (TEF) commonly occur as part of the vertebral defects, anal atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal, and limb abnormalities (VACTERL) association. However, pulmonary agenesis is not typically seen with TEF. We report the anesthetic management of a TEF repair in a 33-week-old, 1.6-kg, monochorionic diamniotic twin with right lung agenesis, intrauterine growth restriction, and cardiac dextroposition. Due to the unique position of the heart, the patient periodically lost complete cardiac output during the exposure and repair of the esophagus.

Background: Active transportation (AT) increases physical activity, reducing cardiometabolic risk among non-Hispanic white adults; however, research on these linkages in racial/ethnic minority women is sparse. This study explored these associations in 327 African American and Hispanic/Latina women. Methods: This analysis used sociodemographics, self-reported AT via the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, accelerometer-measured moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, resting heart rate, and body fat percentage (BF). Unadjusted bivariate associations and associations adjusted for sociodemographic factors were examined. Results: AT users had higher levels of objective MVPA, but this was not statistically significant. AT was not associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in adjusted models (Ps > .05); however, systolic blood pressure was lower for AT users. MVPA was negatively associated with diastolic blood pressure and BF overall, body mass index and BF in African American women, and BF in Hispanic/Latina women (Ps Conclusions: MVPA was associated with improvements in body mass index, diastolic blood pressure, and BF among minority women, and these relationships may vary by race/ethnicity. Practitioners should recommend increased participation in MVPA. Future research, using longitudinal designs should investigate AT’s potential for increasing MVPA and improving cardiometabolic health along with the role of race/ethnicity in these associations.
