In this work, we propose a novel technique based on neural networks, for the design of microwave filters in shielded printed technology. The technique uses radial basis function neural networks to represent the non linear relations between the quality factors and coupling coefficients, with the geometrical dimensions of the resonators. The radial basis function neural networks are employed for the first time in the design task of shielded printed filters, and permit a fast and precise operation with only a limited set of training data. Thanks to a new cascade configuration, a set of two neural networks provide the dimensions of the complete filter in a fast and accurate way. To improve the calculation of the geometrical dimensions, the neural networks can take as inputs both electrical parameters and physical dimensions computed by other neural networks. The neural network technique is combined with gradient based optimization methods to further improve the response of the filters. Results are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed technique for the design of practical microwave printed coupled line and hairpin filters. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, we propose an alternative configuration for the design of bandpass inductive filters using transversal topologies. The structure is based on the use of a dielectric post asymmetrically placed on a cavity resonator. The input and output windows will couple energy to the TE102 and TE103-mode resonators at the same time, therefore obtaining the transversal topology. The proposed configuration is very compact, and allows to implement transmission zeros for maximum selectivity in an easy way. Results are validated with Ansoft's finite-element High Frequency Structure Simulator tool, and with an integral-equation technique to demonstrate the validity of the proposed structure. In this paper, a neural-network-based method for the analysis of practical multilayered shielded microwave circuits is presented. Using this idea, a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is trained to approximate the space-domain multilayered media boxed Green's functions used in the integral-equation (IE) method. Once the RBFNN has been trained, the outputs of the neural network (NN) replace the exact Green's functions, during the numerical solution of the IE. The computation of the RBFNN output values is very fast in comparison with the numerical methods used to calculate the exact Green's functions. This paper describes two novel strategies for efficiently training the RBFNN. In the first strategy, the input space of the RBFNN is divided into several spatial and frequency regions. The spatial subdivision is extended for the first time to both observation and source regions. In addition, the subdivision of the observation points regions is applied in a novel manner to the whole cross section of the metallic box. The second strategy combines the above region subdivision with an adaptive selection of the neurons variances in each region. The accuracy and the computational gain achieved with the NN method proposed makes possible the implementation of computer-aided-design tools that can be used for the analysis and design of integrated shielded microwave circuits (e.g., monolithic microwave integrated circuit devices) on a real-time basis. Different types of waveguide leaky-wave antennas, asymmetrically perturbed with printed-circuits, are studied in this paper. The capability to modify the leakage constant of the excited leaky-wave mode, while maintaining unchanged its phase constant, is studied in detail for each design. Several slot and strip configurations are proposed, in which the width and the position of the planar printed circuit perturbation is modified along the length of the antenna to obtain different tapering topologies. All of them are mechanically flexible to realize, thus simplifying the manufacturing process for millimeter wavelengths applications. The two-dimensional method used for the analysis is accurate for any geometry of the planar perturbation, and also allows for the computation of the whole spectrum of modes in these open waveguides. This makes possible to predict the appearance of unwanted channel-guide modes, and also allows for the study of the coupling effect between the desired leaky-wave mode and them. In this paper, a spatial images technique is used to efficiently calculate the mixed potential (keen's functions associated to magnetic sources when they are placed inside a circular cylindrical cavity. The technique places magnetic dipole images and charges outside the cylindrical region. Their strength and orientation are then calculated by imposing the appropriate boundary conditions for the fields at discrete points of the metallic wall. In this paper, the basic technique is combined with spatial domain multilayered Green's functions formulated with Sommerfeld integrals. This allows the analysis of practical multilayered circuits shielded in circular cavities. Convergence results are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of the technique. In this paper, the design of a novel planar narrowband microstrip filter is presented. The structure is designed and manufactured in microstrip technology, and it is formed by set of pairs of resonators of different lengths. The length of one resonator in each pair is adjusted so that a suitable odd resonance is tuned to the center frequency of the filter. The length of the other resonator is adjusted so that the next even resonance is tuned again to the center frequency of the filter. The different path of the signal in each resonator produces a cancellation of energy at a given frequency, therefore implementing a transmission zero in the insertion-loss response of the filter. First, this paper presents a design example of a single set of resonators (basic unit cell) working at the fifth and sixth resonances. Then, two basic unit cells working at the first and second resonances are first optimized, and then they are cascaded to show how higher-order filter responses can be implemented.
