Abstract

The commercial passenger market for the civil tiltrotor was examined in phase 2. A market responsive commercial tiltrotor was found to be technically feasible, and a significant worldwide market potential was found to exist for such an aircraft, especially for relieving congestion in urban area-to-urban area service and for providing cost effective hub airport feeder service. Potential technical obstacles of community noise, vertiport area navigation, surveillance, and control, and the pilot/aircraft interface were determined to be surmountable. Nontechnical obstacles relating to national commitment and leadership and development of ground and air infrastructure were determined to be more difficult to resolve; an innovative public/private partnership is suggested to allow coordinated development of an initial commercial tiltrotor network to relieve congestion in the crowded US Northeast corridor by the year 2000.

Abstract

Previous work has examined the relative valence (positivity or negativity) of ethnophaulisms (ethnic slurs) targeting European immigrants to the United States. However, this relied on contemporary judgments made by American researchers. The present study examined valence judgments made by citizens from the countries examined in previous work. Citizens of 17 European nations who were fluent in English rated ethnophaulisms targeting their own group as well as ethnophaulisms targeting immigrants from England. American students rated ethnophaulisms for all 17 European nations, providing a comparison from members of the host society. Ratings made by the European judges were (a) consistent with those made by the American students and (b) internally consistent for raters' own country and for the common target group of the English. Following discussion of relevant methodological issues, the authors examine the theoretical significance of their results. © 2010 SAGE Publications.

19. Monolithic low noise amplifier for X-band applications

Abstract

This paper presents the design aspects and performance of a monolithic low noise amplifier (LNA) for X-band applications. The LNA, based on GaAs PM-HEMT technology, shows a noise figure of only 1.1 dB at room temperature and a gain of 19 dB with high gain flatness over a bandwidth of 30%, The design was induced by the requirements of real active phased array antenna modes, e. g. switched applications, high IP3 and damage level. A statistical analysis over a large number of LNAs is added showing the high yield and good uniformity of this device.

28. Greenlandair VTOL transportation study

Abstract

An operational and economic analysis was conducted on Greenlandair, a large helicopter commuter operation. Results indicate that the airline could realize a significant increase in available seat miles with a decrease in total cost by replacing the fleet of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft with Tiltrotors. The Tiltrotor can fly 2.5 times faster than the helicopters, and 25% faster than the presently used turboprop aicraft. Fuel consumption could be reduced by one half, and with additional savings on maintenance, crew costs, and ground support costs, plus expanded flight schedules, the airline could achieve a net yearly savings of over 2 million dollars.

45. Absorption and metabolism of 1-C-hydroxy octadecadienoate in the rat.

Abstract

The metabolism of 1-C-9(13)-hydroxy octadecadienoic acid methyl ester (1-C-HAME) by the rat was investigated in vivo and in liver slices. A 1.5 mg dose of 1-C-HAME administered by stomach tube was efficiently hydrolyzed and absorbed from the intestinal tract. In comparison with 1-C-methyl linoleate (1-C-ML), 1-C-HMAE was more extensively oxidized toCO in vivo and in vitro. After 1-C-HAME administration as much as 50% of the radioactivity in the adipose tissue triglycerides was associated withC-hydroxy fatty acids. The remaining activity was present in randomly labeled normal fatty acids. No evidence was obtained for the incorporation ofC-hydroxy acids into liver lipids; most of the radioactivity from 1-C-HAME in this organ was recovered in saturated and monoenoic fatty acids. About 10% of the radioactivity 24 hr after 1-C-HAME administration was associated with triglyceride trienoic acids, indicating that at least a portion of this acid was dehydrated in the liver. Abstract

The present report, representing Part 2 of a two part study of search salvage procedures for use with narrow-path locators, is concerned with the accurate location of objects whose apparent presence and approximate position have been previously established by wide-path detectors, by intelligence, or by other means. The locator characteristics are specified by an over-all width of searched path W and a probability beta of detecting on any single locator pass any object which has a random location within W. It is found that the most effective search procedures differ according to whether the navigational errors are substantially smaller than, or are substantially larger than, or are of the same order of magnitude as the uncertainty in the object position. For each of these three cases practical search procedures are formulated for attaining a searching efficiency close to the theoretical maximum efficiency. Sufficient data are presented for each searching procedure to permit a quick determination of the amount of searching required to obtain sufficient assurance that a contact being investigated does not represent an object if none has been found, and an estimate of the average time required to find an object when one exists. Most of the analysis is concerned with locators that are perfect identifiers, but it is shown how the results can be applied to the location of objects by means of locators with limited classification capabilities., See also part 1, AD881408
