Abstract

In 2018 the Large Sized Telescope (LST-1) prototype, designed to be the lowest energy detector for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory, was inaugurated at the Observatorio de Roque de Los Muchachos in La Palma, Canary Island and today three more are under construction, LST2-4. The LST camera, with 1855 photomultipliers (PMTs), requires precise and regular calibration. The camera calibration system (hereafter CaliBox), installed at the center of the telescope mirror dish, is equipped with a Q-switching 355 nm UV laser corresponding to the wavelength at which the maximum camera PMT quantum efficiency is achieved, a set of filters to guarantee a large dynamic range of photons on each camera pixel, and a Ulbricht sphere to spread uniformly the laser light over the camera plane 28 m away. The system is managed by an ODROID-C1+ single board computer that communicates through an Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture (OPCUA) protocol to the camera. The CaliBox is designed to fulfill the requirements needed for the calibration of the camera including the monitor of the photon flux to guarantee the quality of the CaliBox system of laser stability, uniform illumination and intensity range. In this paper, we present in detail the optical system, the monitor of the photon flux, the relevant electronic to monitor the device. The performance of the device, the photon flux monitoring, the evaluation of the photon flux sent to the camera obtained during tests performed in Laboratory are shown., Comment: 19 pages

Abstract

The advent of microcontrollers with enough CPU power and with analog and digital peripherals makes possible to design a complete particle detector with relative acquisition system around one microcontroller chip. The existence of a world wide data infrastructure as internet allows for devising a distributed network of cheap detectors capable to elaborate and send data or respond to settings commands. The internet infrastructure enables to distribute the absolute time (with precision of few milliseconds), to the simple devices far apart, with few milliseconds precision, from a few meters to thousands of kilometres. So it is possible to create a crowdsourcing experiment of citizen science that use small scintillation-based particle detectors to monitor the high energetic cosmic ray and the radiation environment.

Abstract

Purpose: A radio-guided surgery technique with beta- -emitting radio-tracers was suggested to overcome the effect of the large penetration of gamma radiation. The feasibility studies in the case of brain tumors and abdominal neuro-endocrine tumors were based on simulations starting from PET images with several underlying assumptions. This paper reports, as proof-of-principle of this technique, an ex-vivo test on a meningioma patient. This test allowed to validate the whole chain, from the evaluation of the SUV of the tumor, to the assumptions on the bio-distribution and the signal detection. Methods: A patient affected by meningioma was administered 300 MBq of 90Y-DOTATOC. Several samples extracted from the meningioma and the nearby Dura Mater were analyzed with a beta- probe designed specifically for this radio-guided surgery technique. The observed signals were compared both with the evaluation from the histology and with the Monte Carlo simulation. Results: we obtained a large signal on the bulk tumor (105 cps) and a significant signal on residuals of $\sim$0.2 ml (28 cps). We also show that simulations predict correctly the observed yields and this allows us to estimate that the healthy tissues would return negligible signals (~1 cps). This test also demonstrated that the exposure of the medical staff is negligible and that among the biological wastes only urine has a significant activity. Conclusions: This proof-of-principle test on a patient assessed that the technique is feasible with negligible background to medical personnel and confirmed that the expectations obtained with Monte Carlo simulations starting from diagnostic PET images are correct., Comment: 17 pages, 4 Figs, Accepted by Physica Medica

Abstract

The background induced by the high penetration power of the gamma radiation is the main limiting factor of the current Radio-guided surgery (RGS). To partially mitigate it, a RGS with beta+ emitting radio-tracers has been suggested in literature. Here we propose the use of beta- emitting radio-tracers and beta- probes and discuss the advantage of this method with respect to the previously explored ones: the electron low penetration power allows for simple and versatile probes and could extend RGS to tumours for which background originating from nearby healthy tissue makes gamma probes less effective. We developed a beta- probe prototype and studied its performances on phantoms. By means of a detailed simulation we have also extrapolated the results to estimate the performances in a realistic case of meningioma, pathology which is going to be our first in-vivo test case. A good sensitivity to residuals down to 0.1ml can be reached within 1s with an administered activity smaller than those for PET-scans thus making the radiation exposure to medical personnel negligible., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the SuperB detector that was to be installed on the SuperB e+e- high luminosity collider. The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented. A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012., Comment: 495 pages

Abstract

Organic scintillators are often chosen as radiation detectors for their fast decay time and their low Z, while inorganic ones are used when high light ields are required. In this paper we show that a para-terphenyl based detector has a blend of properties of the two categories that can be optimal for energy and position measurements of low energy charged particles. On 0.1% diphenylbutadiene doped para-terphenyl samples we measure a light yield 3.5+-0.2 times larger than a typical organic scintillator (EJ-200), and a rejection power for 660 keV photons, with respect to electrons of the same energy, ranging between 3-11%, depending on the signal threshold. We also measure a light attenuation length = 4.73+-0.06 mm and we demonstrate that, with the measurements performed in this paper, a simulation based on FLUKA can properly reproduce the measured spectra., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The possibilty of performing high-rate calorimetry with a slow scintillator crystal is studied. In this experimental situation, to avoid pulse pile-up, it can be necessary to base the energy measurement on only a fraction of the emitted light, thus spoiling the energy resolution. This effect was experimentally studied with a BGO crystal and a photomultiplier followed by an integrator, by measuring the peak amplitude of the signals. The experimental data show that the energy resolution is exclusively due to the statistical fluctuations of the number of photoelectrons contributing to the peak amplitude. When such number is small its fluctuations are even smaller than those predicted by Poisson statistics. These results were confirmed by a Monte Carlo simulation which allows to estimate, in a general case, the energy resolution, given the total number of photoelectrons, the scintillation time and the integration time.

Abstract

In June 2019 from the region of Calabria (Italy) our group launched the Stratospheric Balloon MoCRiS (Measurement of Cosmic Ray in Stratosphere) that reached up to 35111 meters. MoCRiS is a didactical project that uses a Light Balloon with a payload of only 2.1 Kg payload box included. The capsule was Lithium-ion batteries operated and fully instrumented with two Hi-Res Camera, one for picture and one for video, GPS Tracker, two Particle detectors, and sensors for temperature and pressure. Two ArduSiPM [6] scintillation detectors, made by the INFN group in Rome, were used as cosmic ray flux meters. The technology used for these types of devices makes them very economical, light (<150 g), and with low power consumption (<1 Watt). These characteristics are optimal for use with the balloon and in space (e.g. in CubeSat), and very attractive for educational use, even on the ground. During the school year, the students of the scientific high school "Stefano Patrizi" of Cariati (CS) Italy, participated in the definition of the project following theoretical and practical lessons on aerospace techniques and particle physics with regard to cosmic ray showers in the atmosphere. The mission was completely successful by experimentally verifying the pressure-to-height relation, the height of the thermal inversion in the atmosphere, reaching and exceeding the maximum Regener-Pfotzer level of the shower development. The instrumental and didactic platform created is easily replicable even with further upgrades. We are expanding the collaboration with other schools for further launches.

Abstract

OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities was born in 2018 as a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a national framework, the numerous public engagement activities in the field of cosmic ray physics already present at a local level in the divisions and laboratories. Since spring 2020 OCRA offers also a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be offered in the classroom by teachers. The cosmic ray path, present on the website, will be presented together with the online laboratories on the measurement of muons, from the one related to the dependence on the zenith angle made during the International Cosmic Day up to measurements of the flux dependency on the altitude in the atmosphere and in the water. Also, a laboratory allowing to analyze public data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented. In addition, some teaching methods included in the "Teachers' area" of the OCRA website will be described. The developed cosmic ray path was also used to organize an online course for teachers of Italian high schools with the purpose of accompanying teachers when approaching the subject for the first time. Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project offers a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). Created in 2018, OCRA now counts 21 of the institute's divisions all over Italy as members. The project's core activity is the participation of all its members in the International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, and inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. The national activities are complemented by local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and tutorship programs, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. Since spring of 2020 OCRA also offers a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be used in the classroom by teachers. Here we will give an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2020 online event organized in occasion of the International Cosmic Day, that saw the participation of more than 3000 students.

Abstract

The outreach program “A scuola di Astroparticelle” was proposed in 2016 by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN - Napoli Division) in collaboration with the Physics Department “Ettore Pancini” of the Federico II University in Napoli, CNR-SPIN and CNR-ISASI Institutes. Its main goal is to engage teachers and students of High Schools in astroparticle physics projects. For the third edition (2018/19), the activities, which are also part of the Italian Educational Program PCTO - “Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e per l'Orientamento”, involved 18 schools for a total of 21 projects on several topics. Some projects were strictly related to astroparticles as cosmic rays, while others were more technical, as the development of particle detectors, or cross-disciplinary projects. Students worked for the entire school year and prepared materials for the final event. More than 600 students attended the event and presented their work to a jury with a poster and an oral presentation in plenary sessions. Since 2018, the program is part of OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities - a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a common framework, the numerous outreach activities in cosmic-ray field carried out at the local level. The fourth edition (2019-20), in spite of the difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has also seen the participation of 22 schools that carried out part of the activities in an online format. The project realized using the open data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented in detail.

Since spring of 2020 OCRA also offers a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be used in the classroom by teachers. Here we will give an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2020 online event organized in occasion of the International Cosmic Day, that saw the participation of more than 3000 students.

Abstract

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the SuperB detector that was to be installed on the SuperB e+e- high luminosity collider. The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented. A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012.

The use of vegetable oil for power production is a viable route that allows for environmental, social and economic benefits. Nevertheless the increasing interest in pure vegetable oils for energy and biodiesel production promotes market volatilities and, in recent years, high and peak prices. In this framework the OVEST project, supported by the Tuscany region, aims at investigating the possibility to use waste oil streams of the food industry to obtain an alternative feedstock for bioliquids and biofuels production. Most of these waste oil streams are composed by distilled fractions obtained during vegetable oil refining, i.e. free fatty acids, di­ and mono­glyceride, etc. In the current market, a number of waste streams are available from the food industry: oleins and fatty acids, sludge oils and WCO (Waste Cooking Oils) represent several examples of these waste streams from edible oil production. In the OVEST project, vegetable oil is obtained from waste materials by the re­esterification process, in order to obtain a new feedstock for biodiesel production and for power generation. A market analysis is carried out in OVEST, to estimate the economic viability and the potential of each waste streams. PFAD (Palm Fatty Acid Distillate), fatty acids from vegetable oils and WCO are very interesting feedstock to obtain ”re­esterified” oils. The new vegetable oils obtained in OVEST show promising chemical­physical characteristics for power generation, such as contamination from solids and inorganics: for this reason these vegetable oils are under test on reciprocating engines and micro gas turbine for power production. From the environmental point of view, the use of these feedstock allows to meet the requirements of the recently issued European Directive, that introduces minimum targets in terms of GHGs saving for bioliquids and biofuels. According to the EC Directive, LCA must be carried out considering equal to zero the wastes and residual products GHG emissions before processing. Nevertheless, in order to apply this approach to LCA, as proposed in the RED, some preliminary work has to be done in order to ensure the classification of the specific raw materials as waste/residue or by­products on both the technical as well as legal base. In fact, GHG emissions strictly depends on the nature of the raw materials (e.g. in case of residual material no impacts are associated to it, whilst for the by­product the emissions allocated during its production chain must be considered). Moreover, the geographical area of raw materials production as well as the transportation means must be identified in order to correctly quantify the impacts associated to the transport phase, therefore an adequate traceability must be assured. The present work showed that most of the input materials to the esterification plant may be classified as wastes or residues, and that assuring an accurate traceability for each treatment and transport phase is a really complex issue. However the GHG savings of 83.5%, indicated in the RED for bioliquids from wastes, was confirmed by the work here carried out. Abstract

Attention to the environmental problems and strong dependency on fossil fuels make renewable resources very attractive. A strong interest has given to bioenergy and particularly to biofuels as they play a fundamental role to achieve, by 2020, the 10% goal of renewable in the transport sector. Since bioenergy is characterized by a complex long chain, that involves many subjects in order to obtain the final product, the sustainability of the sunflower biodiesel chain in central-northern Italy has been investigated through a LCA consistent with the 2009/28/CE Directive. The work focuses on each single stage of the sunflower biodiesel chain, for different Italian scenarios, to assess the variability of each stage in order to make an analysis of the most critical phases of the biodiesel production process, in terms of primary energy and of CO2 emissions. The work has been carried out using the software Gemis and all of the data, both agricultural and industrial, have been collected by literature or by field measurements.
