Abstract

An investigation was conducted to determine the presence of fumonisin in forage grass, as a preliminary attempt to explain the occurrence of an idiopathic disease among Canadian wapiti and wapiti-red deer hybrids raised in New Zealand grasslands. The results showed a significant amount of fumonisin B1 and its methyl esters in 4 of 40 grassland samples. However, the association between the presence of fumonisin and the occurrence of the idiopathic disease has not yet been ascertained.
