Abstract

Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) can save the lives of industry workers and it is a widely used application of computer vision in the large manufacturing industries. However, most of the applications deployed generate a lot of false alarms (violations) because they tend to generalize the requirements of PPE across the industry and tasks. The key to resolving this issue is to understand the action being performed by the worker and customize the inference for the specific PPE requirements of that action. In this paper, we propose a system that employs activity recognition models to first understand the action being performed and then use object detection techniques to check for violations. This leads to a 23% improvement in the F1-score compared to the PPE-based approach on our test dataset of 109 videos.

29. Effects of Pre-and Post-Anthesis Drought Stress on Corn Physiology and Yield

Abstract

The developmental transition from vegetative to reproductive growth stage is highly sensitive to drought stress in corn (Zea mays L.). Understanding the physiological responses of corn to withstand and recover from drought during early reproductive development is crucial for ensuring stable yields. Therefore, the present study assessed the effects of short-term (7 days) drought stress on the physiology of corn and its ability to recover during the pre-anthesis, mid-silking, and blistering stages. Furthermore, the study examined the effect of drought stress on kernel yield and quality. On average, drought stress during the tasseling, mid-silking, and blistering stages significantly reduced stomatal conductance (82%) and transpiration (81%). These changes under drought led to an average increase in leaf temperature by 3 [degrees]C compared to the control. Leaf chlorophyll content declined by 46% and did not recover after rewatering. Unlike pigments, canopy temperature and quantum efficiency of photosystem II showed substantial recovery after rewatering across growth stages. Drought stress during mid-silking and blistering led to a significant decline of kernel weight by 33% and 34% compared to the control. Average kernel starch was 65%, and protein was 11% across treatments, reflecting kernel quality. Compared with control, drought stress during tasseling led to significant yield losses followed by mid-silking and blistering. The study highlights the importance of managing drought stress by maintaining optimum irrigation around pre- and post-anthesis plant health and efficient kernel set in corn. Abstract

A four-field mixed variational principle is proposed for large deformation analysis of Kirchhoff rods with a $C^0$ mixed FE approximations. The core idea behind the approach is to introduce a one-parameter family of points (the centerline) and a separate one-parameter family of orthonormal frames (the Cartan moving frame) that are specified independently. The curvature and torsion of the curve are related to the relative rotation of neighboring frames. The relationship between the frame and the centerline is then enforced at the solution step using a Lagrange multiplier (which plays the role of section force). Well known frames like the Frenet-Serret are defined only using the centerline, which demands higher-order smoothness for the centerline approximation. Decoupling the frame from the position vector of the base curve leads to a description of torsion and curvature that is independent of the position information, thus allowing for simpler interpolations. This approach is then cast in the language of exterior calculus. In this framework, the strain energy may be interpreted as a differential form leading to the natural force-displacement (velocity) pairing. The four-field mixed variational principle we propose has frame, differential forms, and position vector as input arguments. While the position vector is interpolated linearly, the frames are interpolated as piecewise geodesics on the rotation group. Similarly, consistent interpolation schemes are also adopted to obtain finite dimensional approximations for other differential forms aswell. Using these discrete approximations, a discrete mixed variational principle is laid out which is then numerically extremized. The discrete approximation is then applied to benchmark problems, our numerical studies reveal an impressive performance of the proposed method without numerical instabilities or locking.
