8. Synthesis of Murunskite Single Crystals: A Bridge Between Cuprates and Pnictides

Abstract

Numerous contemporary investigations in condensed matter physics are devoted to high temperature (high-$T_c$ ) cuprate superconductors. Despite its unique effulgence among research subjects, the enigma of the high-$T_c$ mechanism still persists. One way to advance its understanding is to discover and study new analogous systems. Here we begin a novel exploration of the natural mineral murunskite, K$_2$FeCu$_3$S$_4$, as an interpolation compound between cuprates and ferropnictides, the only known high-$T_c$ superconductors at ambient pressure. Because in-depth studies can be carried out only on single crystals, we have mastered the synthesis and growth of high quality specimens. Similar to the cuprate parent compounds, these show semiconducting behavior in resistivity and optical transmittance, and an antiferromagnetic ordering at 100 K. Spectroscopy (XPS) and calculations (DFT) concur that the sulfur 3$p$ orbitals are partially open, making them accessible for charge manipulation, which is a prerequisite for superconductivity in analogous layered structures. DFT indicates that the valence band is more cuprate-like, while the conduction band is more pnictide-like. With appropriate doping strategies, this parent compound promises exciting future developments.

30. Impact of Age on Cognitive Testing Practice Effects and Cardiorespiratory Responses.

Abstract

Objective: This study tested the hypothesis that healthy aging attenuates cognitive practice effects and, consequently, limits the familiarity-associated reductions in heart rate (HR) and breathing frequency (BF) responses during retesting. Methods : Twenty-one cognitively normal older and younger adults (65 ± 2 vs. 26 ± 1 years old) participated in the study. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Digit-Span-Test (DST), Trail Making Test (TMT-B), and California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT-II) were administered twice at 3-week intervals, while HR and BF were monitored by electrocardiography and plethysmography, respectively. Results : Cognitive performances were not affected by the age factor, and the retest factor only affected CVLT-II. HR and BF increased only in the younger adults (p <.01) during cognitive tests; retesting attenuated these responses (retest factor p <.01). Long-delay free-recall in CVLT-II was unchanged in cognitively normal older versus younger adults. Healthy aging did not diminish short-term memory assessed by DST and CVLT-II short-delay or long-delay free-recalls. Conclusions : Only CVLT-II, but not MMSE, DST or TMT-B, demonstrated cognitive retesting practice effects in the younger and older adults. Cognitive testing at 3-week intervals in cognitively normal older and younger subjects revealed divergent cardiorespiratory responses to MMSE, DST, and TMT-B cognitive testing, particularly HR, which increased only in younger adults and to a lesser extent during retesting despite the absence of practice effects. 36. Effect of Arch Support on Shin Splints In Recreational Runners : Cross Sectional Study

Abstract

BACKGROUND - Shin splints is a frequent injury of the lower extremity and one of the most common causes of exertional leg pain in athletes. The purpose of this study was to find the effectiveness of arch support on shin splints in recreational runners. METHOD - 30 recreational runners (15 male, 15 female) with shin splints during running were included in this study through simple random sampling. Each subject ran 1 km at their comfortable pace without the use of arch support for the 1st week, readings of foot and ankle disability index (FADI), numeric pain rating scales (NPRS) and time were recorded as a pre reading on 7th day and the same was done after the completion of 2nd week of running with arch support as post readings on 14th day. Both pre and post readings of FADI, NPRS and Time of all the 30 subjects were compared. RESULT – After analysis, the study showed significant result between pre and post mean value of foot and ankle disability index (FADI) i.e. (p < 0.05) and non-significant results on numeric pain rating scales (NPRS) and time i.e. (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION – The arch support does not reduce shin splints in recreational runners. however, it is effective in decreasing the foot and ankle disability but ineffective in reducing pain and time.

40. Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of Fe2TiO5

Abstract

Iron(III) titanates are attracting rapidly growing interest as very promising candidates for applications in solar energy and optoelectronics because they contain earth-rich elements. Potentially, Fe2TiO5 is a thermoelectric material. We used a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer and Superconducting Quantum Interferometer Device Magnetometer to study the magnetic properties of the pseudobrookite material Fe2TiO5. The material was synthesized by the sol-gel method. The structural parameters of the synthesized samples were investigated by X-ray analysis. The diffractogram was refined with the help of Rietveld refinement on FullProf Suite. Temperature-dependent ZFC and FC magnetization was measured on SQUID for lower temperature down to 2 K and on VSM for higher temperatures up to 1000 K. A transition was observed at 815 K with a separation between the ZFC and FC curves. Parallelly the bifurcation in the isothermal hysteresis measurements indicates that the system exhibits dominant canted AFM (or weak FM) with a small amount of spin glass. The small value of the moment was also pointing towards the canted AFM ordering. The size and morphology of the particles was determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
