Because of increased interest in the marine and atmospheric sciences in elemental carbon (EC), or black carbon (BC) or soot carbon (SC), and because of the difficulties in analyzing or even defining this pervasive component of particulate carbon, it has become quite important to have appropriate reference materials for intercomparison and quality control. The NIST "urban dust" Standard Reference Material(®) SRM 1649a is useful in this respect, in part because it comprises a considerable array of inorganic and organic species, and because it exhibits a large degree of ((14)C) isotopic heterogeneity, with biomass carbon source contributions ranging from about 2 % (essentially fossil aliphatic fraction) to about 32 % (polar fraction). A primary purpose of this report is to provide documentation for the new isotopic and chemical particulate carbon data for the most recent (31 Jan. 2001) SRM 1649a Certificate of Analysis. Supporting this is a critical review of underlying international intercomparison data and methodologies, provided by 18 teams of analytical experts from 11 institutions. Key results of the intercomparison are: (1) a new, Certified Value for total carbon (TC) in SRM 1649a; (2) (14)C Reference Values for total carbon and a number of organic species, including for the first time 8 individual PAHs; and (3) elemental carbon (EC) Information Values derived from 13 analytical methods applied to this component. Results for elemental carbon, which comprised a special focus of the intercomparison, were quite diverse, reflecting the confounding of methodological-matrix artifacts, and methods that tended to probe more or less refractory regions of this universal, but ill-defined product of incomplete combustion. Availability of both chemical and (14)C speciation data for SRM 1649a holds great promise for improved analytical insight through comparative analysis (e.g., fossil/biomass partition in EC compared to PAH), and through application of the principle of isotopic mass balance.

Aims: Intravenous iron is usually reserved for patients in whom oral administration has failed. Typically the calculated total dose is divided in to several fractions. Total dose infusion (TDI) of iron dextran is not commonly used due to the potential for serious side effects such as anaphylactic reactions. Methods: We identified 214 patients retrospectively, who were given TDI. Outcomes studied were: immediate side effects, improvement of haemoglobin and haematocrit. Results: The most frequent side effect of TDI was nausea with a rate of 2.2%. Headache, vomiting, chills and backache were seen in 1.1% of patients and about 0.5% of patients experienced fever and diarrhoea. No anaphylactic reaction was noted. Observed mean elevation of haematocrit was 5.3% and haemoglobin of 2.0 gm/dl (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: TDI of iron dextran is a safe, potentially efficacious and convenient treatment in iron deficiency anaemia, in patients unresponsive or intolerant to oral iron. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The oil spill resulting from the grounding of the MV Wakashio on a reef off the coast of Mauritius in July 2020 was the world's first major spillage of Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) since the implementation of a Global Sulfur Cap from January 2020. In this study, we examine sediments collected in March 2023 from two Mauritius mangrove systems. Analyses by both gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography confirmed, by comparison of molecular biomarkers, the presence of Wakashio VLSFO in one of the mangrove systems. The spilled oil had undergone extensive weathering resulting in substantial losses of toxic mono- and polycyclic aromatic compounds. Red emission in crystals has been observed with an ultra-small-single-benzenic meta -fluorophore ( MF ) with a molecular weight (MW) of only 197 Da, bettering the literature report of fluorophores with the lowest MW = 252 Da. Supramolecular extensive hydrogen-bonding and J-aggregate type centrosymmetric discrete-dimers or a 1D chain of MF s led to red emission ( λ max em = 610-636 nm) in MF crystals. Unlike in the solution phase showing one absorption band, in thin films and in crystals the transition from the S 0 state to both the S 1 - state and S 1 + state becomes feasible. The angle between the transition dipole moments has been obtained to be 66.99° and the exciton splitting energy has been obtained to be (-) 55.7 meV. Significant overlap have been observed and the extent of overlaps integrals between the HOMOs and the LUMOs were assessed to be 0.0068 and (-) 0.00024, respectively. Planar molecules are shown to be involved in anti-parallel stacking with a slip-angle of 44.05° and an inter-planar longitudinal distance of 3.40 Å. A large magnitude of Δ E ES (energy difference between the S 1 - state and S 1 + state) (0.83 eV) has been obtained. A much higher magnitude of the CT coupling constant (-0.708 for MF 2) has been noted in comparison to the coulombic coupling constant (0.016 for MF 2). The excited-state-lifetime has been shown to increase from 5.98 ns (in hexane) to 30.90 ns in the crystal. All these extra-ordinary optical properties point to the existence of a charge-transfer mediated J-aggregation phenomenon in these MF crystals. Understanding the interplay between the molecular structure and material properties of emerging p-type organic semiconductors marks a significant stride in the advancement of molecular electronics. Among the array of promising materials, mechanically flexible single crystals of π-conjugated molecules stand out due to their potential for cutting-edge applications in organic electronics. Notably, derivatives of pyrazinoquinoxaline (PQ) are recognized as versatile building blocks for constructing π-conjugated systems, showcasing good semiconductor performance in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). In this study, we present an exploration into the p-type charge transport and mechanical characteristics of two newly synthesized PQ derivatives: 5,10-diphenyl-2,3,7,8-tetra(thiophen-2-yl)pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline (DPTTQ) and 2,3,5,7,8,10-hexa(thiophen-2-yl)pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline (HTPQ). HTPQ crystals exhibit flexural behaviour under applied stress, effortlessly returning to their initial configuration upon relaxation. Conversely, two polymorphic forms of DPTTQ crystals display brittle fracture when subjected to a similar stress. Specifically, DPTTQ molecules adopt a β-sheet packing, while HTPQ presents a γ-packing with a corrugated arrangement. Field-effect charge transport measurements reveal p-type charge transport in both DPTTQ and HTPQ, with HTPQ showcasing hole mobility up to 0.01 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , while DPTTQ exhibits mobility that is at least one order of magnitude lower. This variance in the field effect mobility can be directly correlated to the difference in crystal packing, highlighting a clear structure-property correlation. Moreover, taking advantage of the flexural nature of the HTPQ crystals, we fabricated durable electronic devices, which retain their conductivity for over 60 cycles of strain, indicating the efficacy of our chemical design in demonstrating high-performance flexible devices. Photo-dissolution, the photochemical production of water-soluble species from oil, can transfer oil-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from floating surface slicks to the underlying seawater. Photo-dissolution was likely a quantitatively relevant fate process for the Macondo crude oil spilled during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, but the importance of photo-dissolution for other oils is poorly constrained. This study evaluated the photo-dissolution reactivities (apparent quantum yields) and modeled rates for oils with diverse physical properties and chemical compositions, including an ultra low sulfur fuel oil (ULSFO). Photo-dissolution from UV (310 nm) light was strongly positively correlated with the fraction of small, gas-oil range compounds (25 ), resulting in faster rates for lighter crudes. However, photo-dissolution rates and importance to oil mass balance varied as a function of both reactivity and properties that govern slick thickness and light absorbance. Thicker slicks (∼1 mm) of light and heavy crudes produced more DOC by photo-dissolution compared to thin slicks due to higher rates of light absorbance. However, the mass lost from thin slicks (∼1 μm) was quantitatively relevant for calculations of oil mass balance, with a modeled ∼5% loss for a simplified, hypothetical spill after 1 day of sunlight exposure. The ULSFO was unusual in its exceptionally low photo-reactivity, suggesting distinct fates for this high-spill-risk product. The results show that photo-dissolution is a relevant fate process for a wide range of oil products and that it is controlled by oil properties and composition, making possible predictions of oil fate and effects for future spills at sea.

Popularized on social media, hand-moldable plastics are formed by consumers into tools, trinkets, and dental prosthetics. Despite the anticipated dermal and oral contact, manufacturers share little information with consumers about these materials, which are typically sold as microplastic-sized resin pellets. Inherent to their function, moldable plastics pose a risk of dermal and oral exposure to unknown leachable substances. We analyzed 12 moldable plastics advertised for modeling and dental applications and determined them to be polycaprolactone (PCL) or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The bioactivities of the most popular brands advertised for modeling applications of each type of polymer were evaluated using a zebrafish embryo bioassay. While water-borne exposure to the TPU pellets did not affect the targeted developmental end points at any concentration tested, the PCL pellets were acutely toxic above 1 pellet/mL. The aqueous leachates of the PCL pellets demonstrated similar toxicity. Methanolic extracts from the PCL pellets were assayed for their bioactivity using the Attagene FACTORIAL platform. Of the 69 measured end points, the extracts activated nuclear receptors and transcription factors for xenobiotic metabolism (pregnane X receptor, PXR), lipid metabolism (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, PPARγ), and oxidative stress (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, NRF2). By nontargeted high-resolution comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC-HRT), we tentatively identified several compounds in the methanolic extracts, including PCL oligomers, a phenolic antioxidant, and residues of suspected antihydrolysis and cross-linking additives. In a follow-up zebrafish embryo bioassay, because of its stated high purity, biomedical grade PCL was tested to mitigate any confounding effects due to chemical additives in the PCL pellets; it elicited comparable acute toxicity. From these orthogonal and complementary experiments, we suggest that the toxicity was due to oligomers and nanoplastics released from the PCL rather than chemical additives. These results challenge the perceived and assumed inertness of plastics and highlight their multiple sources of toxicity.

Alkenones are unique lipids produced by certain species of microalgae, well-known for use in paleoclimatology, and more recently pursued to advance sustainability across multiple industries. Beginning in 2018, the biosynthesis of alkenones by commercially grown Tisochrysis lutea ( T - Iso ) microalgae from one of the world's most established producers, Necton S.A., changed dramatically from structures containing 37 and 38 carbons, to unusual shorter-chain C35 and C36 diunsaturated alkenones (C35:2 and C36:2 alkenones). While the exact reasons for this change remain unknown, analysis of alkenones isolated from T-Iso grown in 2021 and 2023 revealed that this change has persisted. The structure of these rare shorter-chain alkenones, including double bond position, produced by Necton T-Iso remained the same over the last five years, which was determined using a new and optimized cross-metathesis derivatization approach with analysis by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography and NMR. However, noticeable differences in the alkenone profiles among the different batches were observed. Most crystal engineering strategies exercised until now mainly rely on the alteration of weak non-covalent interactions to design structures and thus properties. Examples of mechanical property alteration for a given structure type are rare with only a few halogen bonded cases. The modular nature of halogen bonds with interaction strength tunability makes the task straightforward to obtain property differentiated crystals. However, the design of such crystals using hydrogen bond interactions has proven to be non-trivial, because of its relatively higher difference in bonding energies, and more importantly, disparate geometries of the functional groups. In the present crystal property engineering exercise, with the support of CSD analysis, we replaced a supramolecular precursor that leads to plastically bendable crystals, with a molecular equivalent, and obtained an equivalent crystal structure. As a result, the new structure, with comparable hydrogen bonding chains, produces elastically bendable single crystals (as opposed to plastically bendable crystals). In addition, the crystals show multidirectional (here two) elastic bending as well as rare elastic twisting. The occurrence of multiple isostructural examples, including a solid solution, with identical properties further demonstrates the general applicability of the proposed model. Crystals cannot display the concerned mechanical property in the absence of the desired structure type and fracture in a brittle manner on application of an external stress. Nanomechanical experiments and energy framework calculations also complement our results. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a rational crystal engineering exercise using solely hydrogen bond interactions to obtain property differentiated crystals. While plastic pollution threatens ecosystems and human health, the use of plastic products continues to increase. Limiting its harm requires design strategies for plastic products informed by the threats that plastics pose to the environment. Thus, we developed a sustainability metric for the ecodesign of plastic products with low environmental persistence and uncompromised performance. To do this, we integrated the environmental degradation rate of plastic into established material selection strategies, deriving material indices for environmental persistence. By comparing indices for the environmental impact of on-the-market plastics and proposed alternatives, we show that accounting for the environmental persistence of plastics in design could translate to societal benefits of hundreds of millions of dollars for a single consumer product. Drugs have been classified as fast, moderate, and poor crystallizers based on their inherent solid-state crystallization tendency. Differential scanning calorimetry-based heat-cool-heat protocol serves as a valuable tool to define the solid-state crystallization tendency. This classification helps in the development of strategies for stabilizing amorphous drugs. However, microscopic characteristics of the samples were generally overlooked during these experiments. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of microscopic cracks on the crystallization tendency of a poorly water-soluble model drug, celecoxib. Cracks developed in the temperature range of 0-10 °C during the cooling cycle triggered the subsequent crystallization of the amorphous phase. Nanoindentation study suggested minimal differences in mechanical properties between samples, although the cracked sample showed relatively inhomogeneous mechanical properties. Nuclei nourishment experiments suggested crack-assisted nucleation, which was supported by Raman data that revealed subtle changes in intermolecular interactions between cracked and uncracked samples. Celecoxib has been generally classified as class II, i.e., a drug with moderate crystallization tendency. Interestingly, classification of amorphous celecoxib may change depending on the presence or absence of cracks in the amorphous sample. Hence, subtle events such as microscopic cracks should be given due consideration while defining the solid-state crystallization tendency of drugs.

Importance: Cellulose diacetate (CDA) is a promising alternative to conventional plastics due to its versatility in manufacturing and low environmental persistence. Previously, our group demonstrated that CDA is susceptible to biodegradation in the ocean on timescales of months. In this study, we report the composition of microorganisms driving CDA degradation in the coastal ocean. We found that the coastal ocean harbors distinct bacterial taxa implicated in CDA degradation and these taxa have not been previously identified in prior CDA degradation studies, indicating an unexplored diversity of CDA-degrading bacteria in the ocean. Moreover, the shape of the plastic article (e.g., a fabric, film, or foam) and plasticizer in the plastic matrix selected for different microbial communities. Our findings pave the way for future studies to identify the specific species and enzymes that drive CDA degradation in the marine environment, ultimately yielding a more predictive understanding of CDA biodegradation across space and time., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Coastal ecosystems are facing increasing anthropogenic stressors, including rapid urbanization rates and extensive fossil fuel usage. Nevertheless, the distribution of hydrocarbons in the Brazilian semi-arid region remains relatively uncharacterized. In this study, we analyzed ten surface sediment samples (0-2 cm) along the banks of the Acaraú River to assess the chronic contributions of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The Acaraú River is a crucial riverine-estuarine area in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil. Ultrasound-assisted extraction and gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer were used to identify target compounds: 45 PAHs, 27 n-alkanes (C 10 -C 38 ), and two isoprenoids. At most stations, the predominant grain size was sand, and the organic carbon content was less than 1%. The total n-alkanes concentration ranged from 14.1 to 170.0 μg g - 1 , while individual pristane and phytane concentrations ranged from not detected (nd) to 0.4 μg g -1 and nd to 0.7 μg g -1 , respectively. These concentrations resemble those found in unpolluted sediments and are lower compared to samples from urbanized coastal areas. The total USEPA PAHs concentration varied from 157.8 to 1364 ng g -1 , leading to the characterization of sediment samples as moderately polluted. Based on diagnostic ratios calculated from both alkane and PAH concentrations, the sediment samples were predominantly deriving from pyrolytic sources, with some contribution from petrogenic sources. The most abundant group was 5-ring PAHs (mean: 47.3 ± 36.7%), followed by 3-ring PAHs (mean: 17.9 ± 13.7%). This predominance indicates a pyrolytic origin of hydrocarbons in the Acaraú River. The concentrations reported here were representative of the level of background hydrocarbons in the region. Regarding the sediment quality assessment, BaP TPE calculated for the Acaraú River ranged from 13.2 to 1258.4 ng g -1 (mean: 409.3 ± 409.4 ng g -1 ). Molecular design for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) necessitates precise molecular geometric requirements along with definite electronic states to ensure high intersystem crossing (ISC) rate and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Achieving all these requirements synchronously while maintaining ease of synthesis and scalability is still challenging. To circumvent this, our strategy of combining a crystal engineering approach with basic molecular quantum mechanical principles appears promising. A holistic, non-covalent approach for achieving efficient TADF in crystalline materials with distinct mechanical properties is highlighted here. Charge transfer (CT) co-crystals of two carbazole-derived donors (ETC and DTBC) with an acceptor (TFDCNB) molecule are elaborated as a proof-of-concept. Using temperature-dependent steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence techniques, we prove the need for a donor-centric triplet state ( 3 LE) to ensure efficient TADF. Such intermediate states guarantee a naturally forbidden, energetically uphill reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process, which is paramount for effective TADF. A unique single-crystal packing feature with isolated D-A-D trimeric units ensured minimal non-radiative exciton loss, leading to a high PLQY and displaying interesting mechanical plastic bending behaviour. Thus, a comprehensive approach involving a non-covalent strategy to circumvent the conflicting requirements of a small effective singlet-triplet energy offset and a high oscillator strength for efficient TADF emitters is achieved here., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Non-centrosymmetric molecular crystals have a plethora of applications, such as piezoelectric transducers, energy storage and nonlinear optical materials owing to their unique structural order which is absent in other synthetic materials. As most crystals are brittle, their efficiency declines upon prolonged usage due to fatigue or catastrophic failure, limiting their utilities. Some natural substances, like bone, enamel, leaf and skin, function efficiently, last a life-time, thanks to their inherent self-healing nature. Therefore, incorporating self-healing ability in crystalline materials will greatly broaden their scope. Here, we report single crystals of a dibenzoate derivative, capable of self-healing within milliseconds via autonomous actuation. Systematic quantitative experiments reveal the limit of mechanical forces that the self-healing crystals can withstand. As a proof-of-concept, we also demonstrate that our self-healed crystals can retain their second harmonic generation (SHG) with high efficiency. Photochemical weathering transforms petroleum oil and changes its bulk physical properties, as well as its partitioning into seawater. This transformation process is likely to occur in a cold water marine oil spill, but little is known about the behavior of photochemically weathered oil in cold water. We quantified the effect of photochemical weathering on oil properties and partitioning across temperatures. Compared to weathering in the dark, photochemical weathering increases oil viscosity and water-soluble content, decreases oil-seawater interfacial tension, and slightly increases density. Many of these photochemical changes are much larger than changes caused by evaporative weathering. Further, the viscosity and water-soluble content of photochemically weathered oil are more temperature-sensitive compared to evaporatively weathered oil, which changes the importance of key fate processes in warm versus cold environments. Compared to at 30 °C, photochemically weathered oil at 5 °C would have a 16× higher viscosity and a 7× lower water-soluble content, resulting in lower entrainment and dissolution. Collectively, the physical properties and thus fate of photochemically weathered oil in a cold water spill may be substantially different from those in a warm water spill. These differences could affect the choice of oil spill response options in cold, high-light environments.

In May 2021, the M/V X-Press Pearl container ship burned for 2 weeks, leading to the largest maritime spill of resin pellets (nurdles). The disaster was exacerbated by the leakage of other cargo and the ship's underway fuel. This disaster affords the unique opportunity to study a time-stamped, geolocated release of plastic under real-world conditions. Field samples collected from beaches in Sri Lanka nearest to the ship comprised nurdles exposed to heat and combustion, burnt plastic pieces (pyroplastic), and oil-plastic agglomerates (petroplastic). An unresolved question is whether the 1600+ tons of spilled and recovered plastic should be considered hazardous waste. Due to the known formation and toxicity of combustion-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), we measured 20 parent and 21 alkylated PAHs associated with several types of spilled plastic. The maximum PAH content of the sampled pyroplastic had the greatest amount of PAHs recorded for marine plastic debris (199,000 ng/g). In contrast, the sampled unburnt white nurdles had two orders of magnitude less PAH content. The PAH composition varied between the types of spilled plastic and presented features typical of and conflicting with petrogenic and pyrogenic sources. Nevertheless, specific markers and compositional changes for burning plastics were identified, revealing that the fire was the main source of PAHs. Eight months after the spill, the PAH contents of sampled stray nurdles and pyroplastic were reduced by more than 50%. Due to their PAH content exceeding levels allowable for plastic consumer goods, classifying burnt plastic as hazardous waste may be warranted. Following a largely successful cleanup, we recommend that the Sri Lankans re-evaluate the identification, handling, and disposal of the plastic debris collected from beaches and the potential exposure of responders and the public to PAHs from handling it. Sunlight transforms plastic into water-soluble products, the potential toxicity of which remains unresolved, particularly for vertebrate animals. We evaluated acute toxicity and gene expression in developing zebrafish larvae after 5 days of exposure to photoproduced (P) and dark (D) leachates from additive-free polyethylene (PE) film and consumer-grade, additive-containing, conventional, and recycled PE bags. Using a "worst-case" scenario, with plastic concentrations exceeding those found in natural waters, we observed no acute toxicity. However, at the molecular level, RNA sequencing revealed differences in the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for each leachate treatment: thousands of genes (5442 P, 577 D) for the additive-free film, tens of genes for the additive-containing conventional bag (14 P, 7 D), and none for the additive-containing recycled bag. Gene ontology enrichment analyses suggested that the additive-free PE leachates disrupted neuromuscular processes via biophysical signaling; this was most pronounced for the photoproduced leachates. We suggest that the fewer DEGs elicited by the leachates from conventional PE bags (and none from recycled bags) could be due to differences in photoproduced leachate composition caused by titanium dioxide-catalyzed reactions not present in the additive-free PE. This work demonstrates that the potential toxicity of plastic photoproducts can be product formulation-specific.

The Ocean decade (2021-2030) for sustainable development proclaimed in 2017 by the UN, seeks to promote and conserve the sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. For this, the distribution of n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and biomarkers, in sediments from the Fortaleza coastal zone (Mucuripe harbor (MH) and Inner Continental shelf (ICS)) were used to assess the impacts of anthropogenic activities in the area. The concentrations of total n-alkanes (Σ16 n-alkanes) in MH and ICS sediments varied from 35.9 to 94.9 and 17.9 to 197.3 μg g -1 , respectively, while the isoprenoids phytane and pristane in MH and ICS sediments ranged from 0.1 to 1.69 ug g -1 and from 0.14 and 1.20 μg g -1 , respectively. Most of the sediment samples presented carbon preference index (CPI) values close to unity, indicating that the area is submitted to petroleum-related sources. The concentrations of Σ16 PAHs in MH and ICS sediments varied from 87.0 to 562.0 and 98 to 288.0 ng g -1 . This work presents the first investigation of the petroleum biomarkers hopanes and steranes in the Fortaleza coastal zone, in which ΣBiomarkers varied from 0.10 to 1.79 and 0.02 to 0.24 ug g -1 in MH and ICS sediments, respectively. The presence at stations of biomarkers also indicates petrogenic input. The cocrystallisation of carbamazepine (CBZ) with 3,4-/3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acids (34/35DHBA) with different stoichiometries formed molecular alloys, exchanging a water molecule, in their isostructural CBZ dihydrate form. Furthermore, we show a correlation between the mechanical properties of the CBZ-DHBA cocrystals with the amount of coformer present.

Analytical techniques for chemical analysis of oil, oil photochemical and biological transformation products, and dispersants and their biodegradation products benefited significantly from research following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) disaster. Crude oil and weathered-oil matrix reference materials were developed based on the Macondo well oil and characterized for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hopanes, and steranes for use to assure and improve the quality of analytical measurements in oil spill research. Advanced gas chromatography (GC) techniques such as comprehensive two-dimensional GC (GC × GC), pyrolysis GC with mass spectrometry (MS), and GC with tandem MS (GC-MS/MS) provide a greater understanding at the molecular level of composition and complexity of oil and weathering changes. The capabilities of high-resolution MS (HRMS) were utilized to extend the analytical characterization window beyond conventional GC-based methods to include polar and high molecular mass components (>400 Da) and to provide new opportunities for discovery, characterization, and investigation of photooxidation and biotransformation products. Novel separation approaches to reduce the complexity of the oil and weathered oil prior to high-resolution MS and advanced fluorescence spectrometry have increased the information available on spilled oil and transformation products. HRMS methods were developed to achieve the required precision and sensitivity for detection of dispersants and to provide molecular-level characterization of the complex surfactants. Overall, research funding following the DWH oil spill significantly advanced and expanded the use of analytical techniques for chemical analysis to support petroleum and dispersant characterization and investigations of fate and effects of not only the DWH oil spill but future spills.

Although many examples of mechanically flexible crystals are currently known, their utility in all-flexible devices is not yet adequately demonstrated, despite their immense potential for fabricating high performance flexible devices. Here, we report two alkylated diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) semiconducting single crystals, one of which displays impressive elastic mechanical flexibility whilst the other is brittle. Using the single crystal structures and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that the methylated diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP-diMe) crystals, with dominant π-stacking interactions and large contributions from dispersive interactions, are superior in terms of their stress tolerance and field-effect mobility ( μ FET ) when compared to the brittle crystals of the ethylated diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative (DPP-diEt). Periodic dispersion-corrected DFT calculations revealed that upon the application of 3% uniaxial strain along the crystal growth ( a )-axis, the elastically flexible DPP-diMe crystal displays a soft energy barrier of only 0.23 kJ mol -1 while the brittle DPP-diEt crystal displays a significantly larger energy barrier of 3.42 kJ mol -1 (from 0.019 cm μ FET (from 0.019 cm 2 to 0.014 cm -1 s -1 to 0.014 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ) more efficiently even after 40 bending cycles when compared to the brittle microcrystals of DPP-diEt which showed a significant drop in μ FET just after 10 bending cycles. The main objective of this study was to investigate the 2019 and 2022 oil spill events that occurred off the coast of the State of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil. To further assess these mysterious oil spills, we investigated whether the oils stranded on the beaches of Ceará in 2019 and 2022 had the same origin, whether their compositional differences were due to weathering processes, and whether the materials from both were natural or industrially processed. We collected oil samples in October 2019 and January 2022, soon after their appearance on the beaches. We applied a forensic environmental geochemistry approach using both one-dimensional and two-dimensional gas chromatography to assess chemical composition. The collected material had characteristics of crude oil and not refined oils. In addition, the 2022 oil samples collected over 130 km of the east coast of Ceará had a similar chemical profile and were thus considered to originate from the same source. However, these oils had distinct biomarker profiles compared to those of the 2019 oils, including resistant terpanes and triaromatic steranes, thus excluding the hypothesis that the oil that reached the coast of Ceará in January 2022 is related to the tragedy that occurred in 2019. From a geochemical perspective, the oil released in 2019 is more thermally mature than that released in 2022, with both having source rocks with distinct types of organic matter and depositional environments. Sunlight chemically transforms marine plastics into a suite of products, with formulation─the specific mixture of polymers and additives─driving rates and products. However, the effect of light-driven transformations on subsequent microbial lability is poorly understood. Here, we examined the interplay between photochemical and biological degradation of fabrics made from cellulose diacetate (CDA), a biobased polymer used commonly in consumer products. We also examined the influence of ∼1% titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), a common pigment and photocatalyst. We sequentially exposed CDA to simulated sunlight and native marine microbes to understand how photodegradation influences metabolic rates and pathways. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that sunlight initiated chain scission reactions, reducing CDA's average molecular weight. Natural abundance carbon isotope measurements demonstrated that chain scission ultimately yields CO 2 , a newly identified abiotic loss term of CDA in the environment. Measurements of fabric mass loss and enzymatic activities in seawater implied that photodegradation enhanced biodegradation by performing steps typically facilitated by cellulase. TiO 2 accelerated CDA photodegradation, expediting biodegradation. Collectively, these findings (i) underline the importance of formulation in plastic's environmental fate and (ii) suggest that overlooking synergy between photochemical and biological degradation may lead to overestimates of marine plastic persistence.

Covalent organic nanotubes (CONTs) are one-dimensional porous frameworks constructed from organic building blocks via dynamic covalent chemistry. CONTs are synthesized as insoluble powder that restricts their potential applications. The judicious selection of 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarbaldehyde and tetraaminotriptycene as building blocks for TAT-BPy CONTs has led to constructing flexible yet robust and self-standing fabric up to 3 μm thickness. The TAT-BPy CONTs and TAT-BPy CONT fabric have been characterized by solid-state one-dimensional (1D) 13 C CP-MAS, two-dimensional (2D) 13 C- 1 H correlation NMR, 2D 1 H- 1 H DQ-SQ NMR, and 2D 14 N- 1 H correlation NMR spectroscopy. The mechanism of fabric formation has been established by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The as-synthesized viscoelastic TAT-BPy CONT fabric exhibits high mechanical strength with a reduced modulus ( E r ) of 8 (±3) GPa and hardness ( H ) of 0.6 (±0.3) GPa. Interestingly, the viscoelastic fabric shows time-dependent elastic depth recovery up to 50-70%.

Food waste is an abundant and inexpensive resource for the production of renewable fuels. Biocrude yields obtained from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of food waste can be boosted using hydroxyapatite (HAP) as an inexpensive and abundant catalyst. Combining HAP with an inexpensive homogeneous base increased biocrude yield from 14 ± 1 to 37 ± 3%, resulting in the recovery of 49 ± 2% of the energy contained in the food waste feed. Detailed product analysis revealed the importance of fatty-acid oligomerization during biocrude formation, highlighting the role of acid-base catalysts in promoting condensation reactions. Economic and environmental analysis found that the new technology has the potential to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by 2.6% while producing renewable diesel with a minimum fuel selling price of $1.06/GGE. In late May 2021, the M/V X-Press Pearl container ship caught fire while anchored 18 km off the coast of Colombo, Sri Lanka and spilled upward of 70 billion pieces of plastic or "nurdles" (∼1680 tons), littering the country's coastline. Exposure to combustion, heat, chemicals, and petroleum products led to an apparent continuum of changes from no obvious effects to pieces consistent with previous reports of melted and burned plastic (pyroplastic) found on beaches. At the middle of this continuum, nurdles were discolored but appeared to retain their prefire morphology, resembling nurdles that had been weathered in the environment. We performed a detailed investigation of the physical and surface properties of discolored nurdles collected on a beach 5 days after the ship caught fire and within 24 h of their arrival onshore. The color was the most striking trait of the plastic: white for nurdles with minimal alteration from the accident, orange for nurdles containing antioxidant degradation products formed by exposure to heat, and gray for partially combusted nurdles. Our color analyses indicate that this fraction of the plastic released from the ship was not a continuum but instead diverged into distinct groups. Fire left the gray nurdles scorched, with entrained particles and pools of melted plastic, and covered in soot, representing partial pyroplastics, a new subtype of pyroplastic. Cross sections showed that the heat- and fire-induced changes were superficial, leaving the surfaces more hydrophilic but the interior relatively untouched. These results provide timely and actionable information to responders to reevaluate cleanup end points, monitor the recurrence of these spilled nurdles, gauge short- and long-term effects of the spilled nurdles to the local ecosystem, and manage the recovery of the spill. The International Marine Organization 2020 Global Sulfur Cap requires ships to burn fuels with <0.50% S and some countries require <0.10% S in certain Sulfur Emission Control Areas but little is known about these new types of fuels. Using both traditional GC-MS and more advanced chromatographic and mass spectrometry techniques, plus stable isotopic, δ 13 C and δ 2 H, analyses of pristane, phytane and n-alkanes, the organic components of a suite of three 0.50% S and three 0.10% S compliant fuels were characterized. Two oils were found to be near identical but all of the remaining oils could be forensically distinguished by comparison of their molecular biomarkers and by the profiles of the heterocyclic parent and alkylated homologues. Oils could also be differentiated by their δ 13 C and δ 2 H of n-alkanes and isoprenoids. Crude oil released into the environment undergoes weathering processes that gradually change its composition and toxicity. Co-exposure to petroleum mixtures and other stressors, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation, may lead to synergistic effects and increased toxicity. Laboratory studies should consider these factors when testing the effects of oil exposure on aquatic organisms. Here, we study transcriptomic responses of the estuarine sea anemone Nematostella vectensis to naturally weathered oil, with or without co-exposure to environmental levels of UV radiation. We find that co-exposure greatly enhances the response. We use bioinformatic analyses to identify molecular pathways implicated in this response, which suggest phototoxicity and oxidative damage as mechanisms for the enhanced stress response. Nematostella's stress response shares similarities with the vertebrate oxidative stress response, implying deep conservation of certain stress pathways in animals. Although, dynamic crystals are attractive for use in many technologies, molecular level mechanisms of various solid-state dynamic processes and their interdependence, remain poorly understood. Here, we report a rare example of a dynamic crystal (1), involving a heavy transition metal, rhenium, with an initial two-face elasticity (within ≈1 % strain), followed by elasto-plastic deformation, at room temperature. Further, these crystals transform to a rotator (plastic) crystal phase at ≈105 °C, displaying exceptional malleability. Qualitative and quantitative mechanical tests, X-ray diffraction, μ-Raman and polarized light microscopy experiments reveal that the elasto-plastic deformation involves both partial molecular rotations and slip, while malleability in the rotator phase is facilitated by reorientational motions and increased symmetry (slip planes). The advent of d-d type complex salts for designing smart functional materials with versatile utility inspired us to develop a novel type of M(II)-Ce(IV) complex salts [M(II) = Cu and Zn ions]. In this study, we present for the first time a holistic approach to design and prepare metal complex salts of the novel hybrid d-f block type, [Cu(bpy) 2 ] 2 [Ce(NO 3 ) 6 ] 2 (1), [Cu(phen) 2 (NO 3 )] 2 [Ce(NO 3 ) 6 ](HNO 3 ) (2), [Zn(bpy) 2 (NO 3 )][ClO 4 ] (3), and [Zn(phen) 2 (NO 3 )] 2 [Ce(NO 3 ) 6 ] (4); [bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline]. The intrinsic structural and morphological properties of the compounds have been revealed by employing a suite of analytical and spectroscopic methods. X-ray structural analysis reveals that the copper(II) centres in the cationic complex units of 1 and 2 adopt a highly distorted tetrahedral and a rare bicapped square pyramidal coordination geometry, respectively. The zinc(II) ions in both 3 and 4 adopt the rare bicapped square pyramidal geometry while the cerium(IV) ions in 1, 2 and 4 exist in a dodecahedral geometry. Investigation of supramolecular interactions reveals that intermolecular O⋯H and O⋯π short contacts bind the complex units in 1, while predominant π⋯π interactions, along with O⋯H and O⋯π short contacts, produce the binding force among the complex units in 2. We further employed the complex salts (1-4) to construct Schottky devices to reveal the role of these new complex salts in the charge-transport phenomenon. The carrier mobilities ( μ ) for salts 1-4 were determined to be 1.76 × 10 -6 , 9.02 × 10 -6 , 1.86 × 10 -8 , and 4.31 × 10 -8 m 2 V -1 s -1 , with respective transit times ( τ ) of 439, 85, 4.17 × 10 3 , and 1.79 × 10 3 ns, which suggest that complex salt 2 is the best candidate with the highest transport properties among all the complex salts. A crystal engineering perspective sheds light on the charge-transport properties of the complex salts, emphasizing the attribution of the best performance of 2 to its predominant π⋯π interactions. The synthesis of this new type of complex salts, their physicochemical properties and their charge-transport applications envisage great promise for the development of novel crystalline materials with smart functionalities.

Empowered by crystalline ordered structures and homogeneous fabrication techniques, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been realized with uniform morphologies and isotropic properties. However, such homogeneity often hinders various surface-dependent properties observed in asymmetric nanostructures. The challenge remains to induce heterogeneity in COFs by creating an asymmetric superstructure such as a Janus thin film. In this regard, we propose a versatile yet straightforward interfacial layer-grafting strategy to fabricate free-standing Janus-type COF-graphene thin films. Herein, two-dimensional graphene sheets were utilized as the suitable grafter due to the possibility of noncovalent interactions between the layers. The versatility of the approach was demonstrated by fabricating two distinct Janus-type films, with the COF surface interwoven with nanofibers and nanospheres. The Janus-type films showcase opposing surface morphologies originating from graphene sheets and COF nanofibers or nanospheres, preserving the porosity (552-600 m 2 g -1 ). The unique surface chemistries of the constituent layers further endow the films with orthogonal mechanical properties, as confirmed by the nanoindentation technique. Interestingly, the graphene sheets favor the Janus-type assembly of COF nanofibers over the nanospheres. This is reflected in the better nanomechanical properties of COF fiber -graphene films ( E graphene = 300-1200 MPa; E COF = 15-60 MPa) compared to the COF sphere -graphene films ( E graphene = 11-14 MPa; E COF = 2-5 MPa). These results indicate a direct relationship between the mechanical properties and homo/heterogeneity of Janus-type COF films.

In May 2021, the M/V X-Press Pearl cargo ship caught fire 18 km off the west coast of Sri Lanka and spilled ∼1680 tons of spherical pieces of plastic or "nurdles" (∼5 mm; white in color). Nurdles are the preproduction plastic used to manufacture a wide range of end products. Exposure to combustion, heat, and chemicals led to agglomeration, fragmentation, charring, and chemical modification of the plastic, creating an unprecedented complex spill of visibly burnt plastic and unburnt nurdles. These pieces span a continuum of colors, shapes, sizes, and densities with high variability that could impact cleanup efforts, alter transport in the ocean, and potentially affect wildlife. Visibly burnt plastic was 3-fold more chemically complex than visibly unburnt nurdles. This added chemical complexity included combustion-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. A portion of the burnt material contained petroleum-derived biomarkers, indicating that it encountered some fossil-fuel products during the spill. The findings of this research highlight the added complexity caused by the fire and subsequent burning of plastic for cleanup operations, monitoring, and damage assessment and provides recommendations to further understand and combat the impacts of this and future spills., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2021 The Authors.
