We review the literature on the use of computational methods to study the reactions between carbon dioxide and aqueous organic amines used to capture CO 2 prior to storage, reuse, or sequestration. The focus is largely on the use of high level quantum chemical methods to study these reactions, although the review also summarizes research employing hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics methods and molecular dynamics. We critically review the effects of basis set size, quantum chemical method, solvent models, and other factors on the accuracy of calculations to provide guidance on the most appropriate methods, the expected performance, method limitations, and future needs and trends. The review also discusses experimental studies of amine-CO 2 equilibria, kinetics, measurement and prediction of amine pK a values, and degradation reactions of aqueous organic amines. Computational simulations of carbon capture reaction mechanisms are also comprehensively described, and the relative merits of the zwitterion, termolecular, carbamic acid, and bicarbonate mechanisms are discussed in the context of computational and experimental studies. Computational methods will become an increasingly valuable and complementary adjunct to experiments for understanding mechanisms of amine-CO 2 reactions and in the design of more efficient carbon capture agents with acceptable cost and toxicities.

The origin of enantioselectivity in the dirhodium-catalyzed [3 + 2]-cycloaddition of nitrone and vinyldiazoacetate has been investigated using dispersion-corrected density functional theory. Taking a more realistic account of bulky ligands in models of the dirhodium catalyst when investigating its catalytic behavior is crucial for describing the effects resulting from a high level of asymmetric induction. More than one active site can be located and the extra reactivity is provided by an electron-donation interaction between the substrate and an additional Rh2L4 catalyst.

Many of the promising new applications of graphene nanoflakes are moderated by charge transfer reactions occurring between defects, such as edges, and the surrounding environment. In this context the sign and value of properties such as the ionization potential, electron affinity, electronegativity and chemical hardness can be useful indicators of the efficiency of graphene nanoflakes for different reactions, and can help identify new application areas. However, as samples of graphene nanoflakes cannot necessarily be perfectly monodispersed, it is necessary to predict these properties for polydispersed ensembles of flakes, and provide a statistical solution. In this study we use some simple statistical methods, in combination with electronic structure simulations, to predict the charge transfer properties of different types of ensembles where restrictions have been placed on the diversity of the structures. By predicting quality factors for a variety of cases, we find that there is a clear motivation for restricting the sizes and suppressing certain morphologies to increase the selectivity and efficiency of charge transfer reactions; even if samples cannot be completely purified.

Density functional theory calculations of alkyl-carboxylate anions and their sulfur substituted variants are presented here as an aid for the development of new ionic liquids. Electron transfer both within the anion, and between the anion and cation of an ion pair, are described using natural bond order analysis, using tetraethylammonium as a common cation. The overall stabilising effect of this electron transfer is quantified for the series of anions, and is found to correlate with clear trends in ion-pair binding energy. These and other electronic properties determine which compounds are synthesised, and experimental results validate the computational results. In combination with tetraethylammonium, a carboxylate with an unsaturated alkyl chain produces an ionic liquid at room temperature. However, computations suggest that sulfur substituted anions will produce a lower melting point and perhaps more fluid ionic liquid, but one which would be less stable against oxidation., (This journal is © the Owner Societies 2011)

We have performed atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the (010) surface of LiFePO(4) in contact with an organic liquid electrolyte (OLE), ethylene carbonate : dimethyl carbonate (3 : 7) with approximately 1 mol kg(-1) LiPF(6), and an ionic liquid-based electrolyte (ILE), 1-ethyl 3-methyl-imidazolium: bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (EMIM(+) : FSI(-)) with approximately 1 mol kg(-1) LiFSI. Surface-induced structure that extends about 1 nm from the LiFePO(4) surface was observed in both electrolytes. The electrostatic potential at the LiFePO(4) surface was found to be negative relative to the bulk electrolyte reflecting an excess of negative charge from the electrolyte coordinating surface Li(+). In the ILE system negative surface charge is partially offset by a high density of EMIM(+) cations coordinating surface oxygen. The electrostatic potential exhibits a (positive) maximum about 3 A from the LiFePO(4) surface which, when combined with the reduced ability of the highly structured electrolytes to solvate Li(+) cations, results in a free energy barrier of almost 4 kcal mol(-1) for penetration of the interfacial electrolyte layer by Li(+). The resistance for bringing Li(+) from the bulk electrolyte to the LiFePO(4) surface through this interfacial barrier was found to be small for both the OLE and ILE. However, we find that the ability of EMIM(+) cations to donate positive charge to LiFePO(4)/electrolyte interface may result in a significant decrease in the concentration of Li(+) at the surface and a corresponding increase in impedance to Li(+) intercalation into LiFePO(4), particularly at lower temperatures.

This research identified persistent post concussion symptoms (PCS) in a group of 20 adult subjects. PCS generally lasted for two years with a mean of 3.35 years. Typical symptoms included physical and cognitive fatigue, depressive behaviors, sensitivity to noise, social withdrawal, irritability, concentration and problem solving difficulties, loss of libido and much difficulty making decisions at even the simplest strategic level. They represented a hard core group for whom the original symptoms persisted well beyond the 6~month period. Participants identified their PCS according to sensory, somatic affective and cognitive items immediately following their trauma (01) and two years later (02). Counseling and psychotherapy intervention took place between 01 and 02. Items on the PCS schedules and the Beck Depression Inventory (II) demonstrated significant decline in the presence of overall symptoms most noticeably in reduction of agitation, irritability and suicidal wishes. However, subjects throughout generally experienced the feeling that they were being punished which equated with behaviors comparable with learned helplessness. The PCS group considered themselves to be different people after trauma. They had different goals, changing lifestyle, relationships and employment and were more often in a dependent state. Comparability with other conditions such as PTSD and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was demonstrated by individuals who experienced persistent and invasive post concussion symptoms.

In this study we use a new topological structure measure to analyze the local environment of 923 atom gold clusters quenched from the melt, at various quench rates, by molecular dynamics. The crystallization and geometrical rearrangements of the core atoms upon freezing can be clearly observed using our structure measure which is based on planar graphs. Our results support the hypothesis that crystallization is initiated from the surface and proceeds into the cluster core.

Primary Objective: To examine the effects of changing contexts on language and communication skills of adults with acquired brain injury., Research Design: Repeated measures design., Methods: Four adults with brain injury were observed in four contexts with pragmatic language and communication behaviours recorded. Contexts included baseline, two intervention phases (a 3-day camp and post-camp period) and 2-month follow-up., Results: Participants demonstrated improvements in constructive language production during intervention phases. Results indicate structure, cueing and positive experiences created language which was observed to overcome the influence of organic damage. However, at follow-up, the language and communication levels returned to baseline levels., Conclusion: Clinically, these results have implications for the development of sustained interventions for language and communication skills in community-based rehabilitation programmes. Creating supporting contexts may serve as an effective means of improving language and communication behaviours, while also facilitating optimum community inclusion.

Degenerative subchondral acetabular cysts are a common finding in patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip. These mainly occur in the superior weight-bearing region of the acetabulum. The aim of this study was to identify the presence and distribution of degenerative acetabular cysts in patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip. The radiographs of 100 consecutive patients who had a total hip replacement for primary osteoarthritis of the hip were retrospectively analyzed. Eighty-two patients had degenerative subchondral cysts. Of these 44% were solitary. All the cysts occupied the superior zone of the acetabulum with a proportion extending into the middle zone. None involved the inferior zone, the medial acetabular wall. The radiological presence of an acetabular cyst in the inferior zone (medial acetabular wall) warrants further investigation, and should not be presumed to represent a feature of osteoarthritis, even if osteoarthritis is present. Background: Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae) soluble antigen (MLSA) reagents have been developed with the aim of finding a reagent, comparable to tuberculin, which could identify individuals infected with the leprosy bacillus. They have yet to be evaluated fully in human populations., Methods: More than 15000 individuals living in a leprosy endemic area of northern Malawi were skin tested with one of five batches of MLSA prepared using two different protocols. The main difference in preparation was the introduction of a high G centrifugation step in the preparation of the last three ('second-generation') batches., Results: The prevalence of skin-test positivity (delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH)) and association with the presence of a BCG scar were greater for first (batches A6, A22) than second (batches AB53, CD5, CD19) generation reagents. The association of positivity with M. leprae infection was investigated by comparing results among known (household) contacts of leprosy cases, and among newly diagnosed leprosy patients with those in the general population. While positivity to 'first-generation' antigens appeared to be associated with M. leprae infection, positivity to later antigens was unrelated either to exposure to leprosy cases or presence of leprosy disease. There were geographical differences in the prevalence of DTH to the various batches, probably reflecting exposure to various mycobacteria in the environment., Conclusions: Our results suggest that the 'second-generation' batches have lost antigens that can detect M. leprae infections, but that they retain one or more antigens which are shared between M. leprae and environmental mycobacteria. Natural exposure to these both sensitizes individuals and provides natural protection against M. leprae infection or disease. Identification of antigens present in these groups of skin test reagents may assist in production of improved skin test reagents.

Many individuals suffer acquired brain injury (ABI) each year. This impacts on the need for rehabilitation supports and services that facilitate the achievement of personal goals. The role of assessment in the rehabilitation of people with ABI is examined. The extent to which assessment practices match (in any way) notions of achieving 'satisfying life' is canvassed, and functions of static and dynamic assessment conveyed. Evaluation of the functions of static and dynamic assessment in facilitating community re-entry is undertaken. The response of 18 subjects with ABI (XCA, 27.5 years, X period since trauma 6.0 years) to static and dynamic assessment processes are compared. The paper concludes by reasoning that community re-entry is the main goal of people with ABI, and that dynamic assessment processes contribute to the achievement of this.

There is a longstanding debate over the implications of natural and vaccine-induced delayed type hypertensivity for protective immunity to mycobacterial infections. The identification of correlates of vaccine-induced protective immunity should help explain the inconsistent behaviour of BCG vaccines in different populations and assist in efforts to devise improved vaccines. More than 70,000 subjects in Karonga District, northern Malawi were skin tested with soluble antigens of the tubercle and leprosy bacilli, and then followed up for five years for tuberculosis and leprosy incidence. Incidence rate ratios were calculated to compare subjects with different levels of prior skin test sensitivity, after controlling for the effects of age, sex and previous BCG vaccination. BCG vaccination protected against leprosy without persistent delayed-type hypersensitivity to tuberculin or to soluble antigens of the leprosy bacillus. In subjects who had not received BCG, hypersensitivity to tuberculin or to antigens of the leprosy bacillus was associated with strong protection against leprosy. In BCG-vaccinated and unvaccinated subjects, there was a J-shaped relation between hypersensitivity to tuberculin and subsequent rates of tuberculosis, with lowest rates associated with low grade sensitivity (induration 1-10 mm). This study shows that delayed-type hypersensitivity to mycobacterial antigens has different implications for tuberculosis and leprosy: low-level hypersensitivity (probably attributable to environmental mycobacteria) is associated with protection, but persistent vaccine-associated hypersensitivity to mycobacterial antigens is not a correlate of vaccine-derived protection against mycobacterial diseases.

In this report the methods of the Karonga Prevention Trial, a double-blind leprosy and tuberculosis vaccine trial in Karonga District, Northern Malaŵi, are described in detail. During a total population house-to-house survey, which lasted from November 1985 until August 1989, 121,008 people (57,892 males and 63,116 females) were vaccinated. A further 5835 people refused vaccination and 5757 were ineligible for vaccination, 2652 of them because they had a history or signs of leprosy, or because they were suspected to have early leprosy. A total of 66,145 individuals, without evidence of prior BCG vaccination, received one of the following: BCG, BCG + 5 x 10(7) killed Mycobacterium leprae, or BCG + 6 x 10(8) killed M. leprae; 54,863 individuals found with a typical or a doubtful BCG scar received either placebo or BCG, or (from mid-1987 onwards) BCG + 6 x 10(8) killed M. leprae. Side-effects were not looked for systematically, but 4 individuals self-reported with glandular abscesses, 9 with large post-vaccination ulcers (> 25 mm in diameter) and 2 with ulcers which persisted for more than 1 year. BCG vials collected from paraffin refrigerators in the field showed satisfactory concentrations of viable BCG throughout the trial. Post-vaccination skin test (RT23 and M. leprae soluble antigen) results and post-vaccination ulcer rates indicate that few mistakes were made in the field when recording the vaccine codes.

The proliferative responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) to Mycobacterium leprae and BCG were studied in two groups of leprosy patients: a group of 8 lepromatous patients who had been on treatment for more than 20 years (TLL) and a group of 8 untreated lepromatous leprosy patients (ULL). The mean response to M. leprae of the TLL group was 6195 cpm with 5 of the 8 patients responding positively. The mean response to M. leprae of the ULL group was 617 cpm, with only 1 patient showing a positive response. The corresponding proliferative responses to BCG were 19,908 cpm in the TLL group and 7908 in the ULL group. Thirteen M. leprae reactive clones were established from 2 TLL patients and 5 M. leprae reactive clones were established from 2 tuberculoid leprosy patients. Seven of these clones, 4 from the TLL patients and 3 from the tuberculoid (TT) patients could be studied further. Three of the TLL clones responded specifically to M. leprae, while one of the clones exhibited a broad cross-reactivity to other mycobacteria. All of these clones were of the CD4+CD8- phenotype. Our findings suggest that responsiveness to M. leprae can be detected in vitro in a proportion of LL patients who have undergone prolonged chemotherapy, and that this response involves M. leprae reactive CD8+CD8- T cells, of which some appear to be specific to M. leprae.

Antigens extracted from leprosy bacilli obtained from infected human and armadillo tissues have been examined by immunodiffusion analysis with serum samples from lepromatous patients and with immune sera raised in rabbits. Using the best combinations of serum and antigen extracts, 12 antigenic constituents were found in the leprosy bacilli. Six of these were antigens common to all mycobacteria and nocardiae, 4 were specific to the leprosy bacillus and the position of 2 could not be determined. Groups ii and iii antigens (i.e. those associated with the slow growing and fast growing subgenera of mycobacteria) were not found in theleprosy bacillus, suggesting some relationship with M. vaccae and similar strains, in which these antigens are also missing. Lymphocyte transformation tests performed on lymph node cells of mice infected or immunized with leprosy bacilli also showed the leprosy bacillus to have a closer relationship with M. vaccae than with other mycobacteria.

Quadruple skin testing with new tuberculins was used to evaluate the effects of previously administered BCG Madras in children attending schools in the slums, or living in Kopri Leprosy Colony in Bombay. There were differences between schools both in the level of sensitisation of children without BCG scars and in the effects of BCG vaccination. Results obtained at one school resembled those obtained in a previous study in Agra, where BCG was thought to be ineffective. Results from the other schools and Kopri were more like those previously reported from Ahmednagar, where BCG was considered to be much more effective. Thus within the same city groups of children of the same social status may vary widely both in their contact with mycobacteria and in their capacity to benefit from BCG vaccination.

In an attempt to achieve maximal skin-test positivity to leprosin A in children of leprosy patients living in Baba Baghi Leprosy Sanatorium in Iranian Azerbaijan, two new vaccines have been employed. Children without scars of previous BCG and without response to leprosin A were given a vaccine containing 10(8) viable units of BCG Glaxo plus 10(7) killed Mycobacterium vaccae per dose (vaccine B). Children with BCG Pasteur (Teheran) scars but without response to leprosin A were given a vaccine containing 10(8) killed M. vaccae alone (vaccine D). Eight years later skin testing was repeated, and both new vaccines were found to have significantly increased the numbers of children responding to leprosin A above the level that would have been expected had they received BCG Pasteur alone. This increase was due in large part to increases in the proportions of individuals responding to group i (common mycobacterial) antigens, and known as category 1 responders. The use of suspensions of killed M. vaccae in conjunction with BCG may represent a considerable advance in inducing protection from multibacillary leprosy in close contacts of leprosy patients if leprosin A positivity is truly a correlate of protective immunity. A comparison, using the same criteria, with the other proposed vaccines for leprosy would be very interesting.

Mice were inoculated with human sarcoid tissue homogenates or with a first or a second passage homogenate of mouse tissue (including 0.2 mum membrane filtrates) originating from the inoculation of human sarcoid, Crohn's disease, or control tissue homogenates. Epithelioid and giant cell granulomas were present in the footpads and/or viscera of some of the mice given homogenates originating from each sarcoid or Crohn's disease tissue 15 months after inoculation but were not present in mice given control homogenates. Among mice given homogenates originating from human sarcoidosis, granulomas were present in many organs and tissues; in contrast, a pattern of selective dissemination of visceral granulomas was found among mice given homogenates originating from Crohn's disease. This differential distribution of visceral granulomas also followed the inoculation of 0.2 mum membrane filtrates. Granulomatous responses at Kveim test sites in the ear 9-17 months after inoculation of homogenatesoriginating from human sarcoidosis or Crohn's disease were confined to mice showing granulomas in footpads of viscera. The ability of the transmissible agents to induce granulomas in mice was destroyed when sarcoid or Crohn's tissues were autoclaved or when sarcoid homogenates were stored at -20degreesC for 1 week or exposed to 60Co irradiation (2.5 MR).

On the basis of clinical, histological and bacteriological assessments, 31 patients in Central India were selected and classified as having active but early lepromatous leprosy and 4 patients as having early borderline leprosy. From the nose of each patient an average of 4 biopsies were taken from particular sites of the septum and turbinates either by punch biopsy or dissection with a scalpel. The nasal tissues from all the lepromatous patients contained many acid-fast bacilli; no bacilli or abnormalities were seen in nasal tissues from the borderline patients. The histopathology of these highly bacilliferous tissues is described. Bacilli were universally seen in macrophages, but they were also seen in blood monocytes and polymorphs, fibroblasts, squamous and pseudo-columnar epithelium, keratin, peri- and endo-neurial cells of tiny nerve bundles, erectile tissue, vascular plain muscle, perivascular histiocytes and frequently and abundantly in the cytoplasm of endothelial lining cells of lymphatics and of small blood vessels and free within the lumina of these vessels. Five basic mechanisms of escape of bacilli from the submucosa on to the surface, and thus into the external environment, are described. Secondary infection, in the presence of an expansile lepromatous infiltrate, together with simple trauma to the surface epithelium, are the main factors in the discharge of bacilli. These histopathological observations are consistent with the findings from other recent studies on the nose in leprosy regarding (1) the large numbers of morphologically intact and viable Myco. leprae excreted in the nasal mucus of lepromatous patients; (2) the clinical changes observed in the nose of such patients, and (3) the similar nasal involvement and excretion of Myco. leprae from the nose of mice inoculated with leprosy bacilli of human origin. Of particular interest was the frequency and intensity of bacilli within the endothelial lining cells of small blood and lymph vessels and the presence of bacilli free within the lumina of these vessels or within monocytes and polymorphs. The possible dynamic significance of these observations in the pathogenesis of leprosy is discussed. The significance of all these observations in relation to (1) the spread of leprosy; (2) local factors in the nose which might favour the growth of Myco. leprae, and (3) the nose as a portal of entry, are discussed.

Eighty-one placentae from women with leprosy and 17 placentae from healthy controls were subjected to a detailed macroscopic, light microscopic, ultrastructural, immunopathological, microbiological and biochemical study. The placental morphology and immunohistology were normal, and there was no morphological evidence of infection of the placenta due to M. leprae. No acid-fast bacilli or acid-fast bacillary granules were seen on light microscopy of any of the placentae from leprous women, although homogenates from two out of seven placentae from women with very active lepromatous leprosy contained acid-fast bacilli in very small numbers. The small placental size of women with leprosy, most marked in those with lepromatous leprosy, appears to be due to a decrease in placental cell size, rather than to a reduced number of cells in the placenta. It is postulated that the small placenta and reduced fetal birth weight observed in lepromatous leprosy are a consequence of depressed maternal immune reactivity.

Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) elevation accompanies induction of secondary amyloidosis in mice given Mycobacterium butyricum in Freund adjuvant. The synthesis of SAA by cultured hepatocytes is induced by a macrophage-derived mediator, which has been identified as interleukin 1. In these studies, SAA synthesis has been used as an index of macrophage activation to examine the in vivo response of mice to challenge with seven different mycobacteria and with synthetic analogs of the immunoadjuvant N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine [MDP(L-D)]. SAA synthesis was stimulated by administration (by the intraperitoneal route) of the mycobacteria dissolved in saline, with Mycobacterium vaccae being the most active and Mycobacterium leprae being the least stimulatory. MDP(L-D), which is the minimal structure (molecular weight, 492) able to substitute for mycobacteria in Freund adjuvant, stimulated SAA synthesis, whereas the MDP(D-D) isomer was inactive. The butyl ester of MDP, which induces no detectable pyrogenicity but retains adjuvanticity, required a 100-fold greater dosage than MDP(L-D) in stimulating SAA synthesis. Amyloidosis was detected histologically only when active SAA inducers MDP(L-D), M. vaccae, and M. butyricum, were administered in incomplete Freund adjuvant, with amyloid-enhancing factor. These studies demonstrated that SAA elevation was a sensitive in vivo marker of the capacity of antigens to stimulate macrophages to produce interleukin 1. A point of considerable relevance to the human use of MDP was the observation that repeated injections of the adjuvant MDP in saline did not induce secondary amyloidosis.

In studies aimed at the development of an antileprosy vaccine for use in man, Mycobacterium leprae suspensions were prepared from livers of experimentally infected armadillos. The 2 methods of purification in chief use, carried out after irradiation of the tissue with 2.5 megarads of gamma irradiation from 60Co, involved treatment with 0.1N NaOH for 2 h at room temperature, trypsin and chymotrypsin digestion for 24h at 37 degrees, and separation in a 2-phase liquid polymer (dextran:polyethylene glycol) system. All vaccines were autoclaved and injected intradermally in mice. Earlier studies have shown that heat inactivation does not interfere with the immunogenicity of M. leprae. Immunogenicity was measured by foot-pad enlargement (FPE) after challenge with heat-killed M. leprae suspensions or by protection against infectious foot-pad challenge. The results indicated that the irradiation and 2-phase separation did not decrease immunogenicity but the NaOH treatment and enzyme digestion did.

Although the portal of entry and mode of spread of M. leprae in human leprosy are still uncertain, it is widely held that direct person-to-person skin contact is important. This assumption has ignored the fact that patients with highly bacilliferous leprosy have nasal as well as dermal infection and that, since M. leprae is shed predominantly from the nose, leprosy might be an airborne infection. The present study was designed to investigate this possibility with mice exposed to airborne infection with M. leprae. The conditions are described in which thymectomised-irradiated CBA strain mice exposed to M. leprae aerosols sustained an immediate lung retention of 1 X 10(5) bacteria. Fourteen to 24 months later, 33% (10 of 30) of the mice had countable numbers of acid-fast bacilli (greater than 2 X 10(4)) with the characteristics of M. leprae in one or more homogenates prepared from ears, foot pads, nose or lungs. Evidence is presented from the distribution of M. leprae that the infection had arisen from systemic spresd of bacilli initially entering the lungs rather than from multiplication of organisms locally retained there, or in the nose, at the time of airborne infection. The relevance of these results to the possible route of infection of leprosy in man is discussed.

A clinical, bacteriological and histopathological investigation of 62 patients with lepromatous leprosy attending a hospital in South India is reported, with particular emphasis on the activity of the disease in the nose. Twelve of the patients were from a group of 34 new patients who had been originally examined 5 years previously, and subsequently treated with dapsone (DDS) monotherapy. A further 50 lepromatous patients were also examined, who had been treated for periods ranging from 3 months to 10 years. With a few exceptions, there was good correlation between the clinical and histopathological findings in the skin and nose. Evidence of disease activity was demonstrated among three-quarters of the patients who had been treated for over a year. Failure to achieve quiescence was explained in most of the patients by failure to collect their dapsone treatment or to ingest it regularly as demonstrated by the determination of DDS/creatinine ratios on urine samples collected at the time of their visit to the clinic. Although the compliance of most patients was relatively satisfactory during the first 12 months of treatment, thereafter it deteriorated markedly. In contrast to the clinical, bacteriological, and histopathological evidence of disease activity in the skin and nose of most patients, in only one of the patients treated for more than a year was a positive nose-blow encountered. This suggests that the infectivity of DDS-treated lepromatous patients within this time and this diminished infectivity often persists despite poor drug compliance and continuing disease activity.
