The purpose of this study was to determine whether such a sleep imbalance exists in working parents of young children, and the extent to which it depends on the way sleep is measured. The study also examined whether imbalanced sleep between parents predicts parental stress and relationship satisfaction.Methods: Sleep was measured for seven consecutive days in 60 parenting couples (average age of the youngest child: 3.3 years ± SD 2.5 years). Actigraphs were worn across the week, and ratings of sleep, parental stress, and relationship satisfaction were made daily.Results: Mothers perceived their sleep quality as worse (b= − 0.38 scale units, p< 0.001), with more wake periods (b= +0.96 awakenings, p< 0.001) but with longer sleep duration (b= +32.4 min, p< 0.01) than fathers. Actigraphy data confirmed that mothers slept longer than fathers (b= +28.03 min, p< 0.001), but no significant differences were found for wake time, number of awakenings or who woke up first during shared awakenings. Furthermore, there was no difference in whether mothers and fathers slept sufficiently. The level of sleep imbalance between parents did not predict parental stress. A larger imbalance in subjective sleep sufficiency predicted decreased relationship satisfaction for fathers (b= − 0.13 scale units, p< 0.01) but increased relationship satisfaction for mothers (b= 0.14 scale units, p< 0.05). No other sleep imbalance measures predicted relationship satisfaction.Conclusion: Our findings are in line with previous research on sleep in men and women in general, with longer sleep and subjective reports of sleep disturbances in women, rather than previous research on sleep in parents of young children. Thus, we found no evidence of a sleep imbalance when both parents have similar working responsibilities.Keywords: parent, sleep, working, parental leave, equal, imbalance

7. Negative corona in air at atmospheric pressure due to a voltage impulse.

Abstract

This article presents a numerical modeling of a negative corona caused by an overvoltage pulse (∼250%), in a point-to-plane electrode system. The field value applied to the cathode is high, thus, the numerical simulation described in this article attempts to show that the field-effect emission can be responsible for the ignition of the corona and for its first stage of development, while the positive-ion bombardment is responsible for sustaining the discharge during the current decay phase. A time-dependent enhancement factor is introduced in the classical Fowler–Nordheim relationship in order to model the switch on of some emissive site at the cathode surface. Preliminary experiments were carried out in order to better understand the ignition and development of the corona. The role of the field-effect emission is underlined and the dimension of the corona is optically determined. The negative corona current pulse and its associated emitted UV light are computed and compared to experimental results. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BackgroundPrevious studies hypothesized that neurodevelopmental risk factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Cortical folding has been shown to be a reliable indicator for normal and altered neurodevelopment, but in OCD it has barely been investigated up to now. The present study investigates whether alterations in gyrification are detectable in OCD and, if so, how these are associated with clinical characteristics.MethodWe compared the local Gyrification Index (lGI) between 75 OCD patients and 75 matched healthy subjects across the whole brain. In addition, for those regions exhibiting an altered lGI in patients we explored a potential relationship to symptom severity, age of onset, and influence of medication.ResultsOCD patients had a significantly decreased lGI in right parietal, precentral but also insula, temporal, pars triangularis and rostral middle frontal regions compared to healthy subjects. A positive association with age of onset was found but no association with symptom severity. There was no effect of co-morbidity or medication.ConclusionsThe reduced gyrification found in OCD confirms previous findings in other psychiatric disorders and suggests that alterations may already occur during early stages of brain development. Our findings support the idea that altered cortical folding might represent a trait characteristic of the disorder although longitudinal studies are needed to clarify the trajectory of this morphological measure in OCD. 44. Numerical modelling of negative corona discharge in SF<SUB>6</SUB> at atmospheric pressure

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical simulation of the first negative corona in SF6 at atmospheric pressure, in a point-to-plane electrode system. A few experiments are first carried out in order to acquire a basic knowledge of the physical processes involved in the first negative corona. Since it does not seem convincing that photoemission would be the predominant secondary process at the cathode surface, field effect emission will be introduced into the numerical modelling of the ignition and development of the first negative corona. The axial and radial development of the discharge is also optically measured. Continuity equations of electron, positive- and negative-ion densities are numerically solved on a non-uniform mesh with a monotonic upwind scheme for conservation law (MUSCL) method. These equations are coupled with Poisson's equation by using the classical method of disks introduced by Davies. The novelty of this model bears upon the choice of the boundary conditions which take field effect emission into account. According to the numerical simulation, this secondary effect could indeed explain the fast rise time of the typical negative corona current pulse, and enables numerical simulation results to be in agreement with the experimental ones.

Abstract

Accepted Manuscript, BACKGROUND: Lateralized dysfunction has been suggested in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, it is currently unclear whether OCD is characterized by abnormal patterns of brain structural asymmetry. Here we carried out what is by far the largest study of brain structural asymmetry in OCD.METHODS: We studied a collection of 16 pediatric datasets (501 patients with OCD and 439 healthy control subjects), as well as 30 adult datasets (1777 patients and 1654 control subjects) from the OCD Working Group within the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium. Asymmetries of the volumes of subcortical structures, and of measures of regional cortical thickness and surface areas, were assessed based on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans, using harmonized image analysis and quality control protocols. We investigated possible alterations of brain asymmetry in patients with OCD. We also explored potential associations of asymmetry with specific aspects of the disorder and medication status.RESULTS: In the pediatric datasets, the largest case-control differences were observed for volume asymmetry of the thalamus (more leftward; Cohen's d = 0.19) and the pallidum (less leftward; d = -20.21). Additional analyses suggested putative links between these asymmetry patterns and medication status, OCD severity, or anxiety and depression comorbidities. No significant case-control differences were found in the adult datasets.CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest subtle changes of the average asymmetry of subcortical structures in pediatric OCD, which are not detectable in adults with the disorder. 46. Experimental studies and simple numerical modeling of underwater electric discharges.

Abstract

At present, underwater electric pulsed discharges are used in a wide range of modern applications. During the development of a system for generating underwater acoustic pressure pulses, a numerical model is an essential tool for guiding the design and interpreting the data. Developing a complex one-dimensional numerical code, like those presented in the literature, requires a substantial dedicated effort. Unfortunately, previous work trying to use simple and elegant theoretical models developed many decades ago reported a fundamental issue, apparently related to the input data. The present work performs a detailed analysis of the real meaning of the voltage measured across an underwater discharge and clarifies the correct way the power input to a simple two-phase model should be calculated. Based on accurate measurements, a phenomenological methodology to obtain the input data is demonstrated, with theoretical predictions obtained from the simple two-phase model being successfully compared with the experimental evidence obtained from both the present work as well as from other reliable data presented in the literature.
