3. Geochemistry and mineralogy of British Carboniferous seatearths from Northern coalfields

Abstract

The palaeogeographic, tectonic, and biologic conditions of seatearth deposition are briefly reviewed. Detailed mineralogical examination reveals that seatearths are essentially quartz-illite-kaolinite assemblages with minor chlorite, siderite, and organic matter. The illites show wide variation from well ordered sedimentary muscovites to disordered and/or interlayered 'illitic' minerals. The kaolinites are found to be relatively well crystalline and the chlorites are Mg rich. Siderite is commonly associated with minor kaolinite and pyrite in nodules. The organic matter consists of terrestial plant debris. The distribution functions of elements and minerals in seatearths are discussed, A normal model is reasonably satisfactory for SiO(_2), Al(_2)O(_3), CaO, P(_2)O(_5), Ni, Y, and Zr; a lognormal model for TiO(_2), Fe(_2)O(_3), MgO, Na(_2)O, K(_2)O, S, C, H(_2)O(^+), H(_2)O(^-), CO(_2), Ba, Or, Ou, La, Mn, Nb, Rb, Se, Sr, and Zn. Stepwise multiple linear regression is used to assess the relationships between chemistry and mineralogy. It is found that the major components are controlled by the mineralogy to a large extent and that the trace elements and similarly controlled but to a lesser degree. The present data, when compared with previous data, is shown to be comparable .R-mode factor analysis is used to derive factors which control the distributions of trace elements and minerals in seatearths. Eight factors are extracted and they relate to the depositional environment and stratigraphic controls. Roof rocks are examined and the pattern they produce after R-mode factor analysis is shown to be similar to that for a set of clastic cyclothemic sediments. The significance of differences between seatearths and roof rocks are discussed. It is concluded that seatearths are leached relative to their corresponding roof measures. The data is summarised and a detailed theory for the origin and genesis of seatearths, based on that of MOORE (1968), is developed.

Abstract

The article presents a review of research on the function and nature of sport pedagogy, which appeared in English-language journals in 2010-2011. A so-called "by-hand" overview of abstracts related to terms such as physical education and human movement studies in the journals, such as "European Physical Education Review" and "Quest" was performed. Furthermore, the papers reviewed reject traditional conceptions of sport pedagogy and favour a more complex and socially constructed understanding.

Abstract

The fluorosilicone compound FVMQ 8815 was independently tested to demonstrate superior retention of sealing properties (low compression set, high retraction, low crystallisation tendency and low glass transition temperature) over the regulatory temperature range for the Type B air transport package GB/3405A. The effects of hardness, permeability, thermal expansivity, seal stretch, compression and gland fill at adverse conditions and tolerances were determined. Contingency rubbers, high temperature compatibility and cumulative radiation absorbed by generic seals from various payloads were considered. The application of helium permeability data gave tolerable leakage rates for multiple scenarios. Predictions will be checked in low/high temperature trials during 2006. The performance of FVMQ 8815 seals would probably negate the need for repeat IAEA tests relating to paragraphs 720–729. A manufacturing quality control plan would include the moulding/curing method, the inspection/testing regime and frequency, storage specifications and verification of lubricant compatibility. 40. Prognosis in equine colic patients using multivariable analysis

Abstract

Multiple logistic regression was used to investigate prognosis in 308 horses referred to the University of Minnesota veterinary teaching hospital with colic. Bivariate results identified the following significant individual parameters: absent or hypomotile abdominal sounds, medical or surgical classification, peritoneal fluid total protein, anion gap, serum glucose, capillary refill time, blood pH, heart rate, packed cell volume, base excess, serum chloride, plasma bicarbonate, serum urinary nitrogen and age. Two multivariable prognostic models were developed using logistic regression. Model I (based on 257 cases with a mortality rate of 39%) included age, sex, medical or surgical classification, capillary refill time, packed cell volume and heart rate. Model II (based on 138 cases with a mortality rate of 48%) included age, sex, medical or surgical classification, capillary refill time, serum bicarbonate, serum chloride and respiratory rate. Predictive performance of the models was evaluated by treating the calculated probability of death for each horse as a continuous test result. The influence of varying the probability cutoff point for death on test characteristics (sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values) was determined. These models have not been validated and thus their performance in a different population is uncertain.
