To determine the magnitude, associated factors and morphological types of anemia among hospitalized 6– 59 months age children from June 15 to October 15, 2022 at Jimma Medical Center, southwest Ethiopia. Methodology: Hospital-based cross- sectional study design was conducted from June 15 to October 15, 2022 at Jimma Medical Center, involving 383 hospitalized children aged 6– 59 months by employing convenient sampling technique. Data of sociodemographic characteristics and other associated factors of the study individuals waere collected using a pre-structured questionnaire. Clinical data were collected by physical examination and from history of client by medical interns and nurses. Then 3 mL venous blood was collected and analyzed for complete blood count. Data were coded, cleared and entered into EpiData version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression was used to identify associated factors. Results: The overall prevalence of anemia among hospitalized 6– 59 months age children was 57.2%; out of them 30.82% were moderate. In the present study children with malaria infection, AOR = 1.15 (95% CI: 0.017, 0.781), Cchildren with severe malnutrition, AOR = 2.046 (95% CI: 0.306, 1.366), and children with low family income, AOR = 2.6 (95% CI 0.475, 0.894) were independent variables associated with anemia. Conclusion and Recommendation: Anemia among study participants is found to be a severe public health problem. Background: Diabetes is a chronic metabolic syndrome that is a global public health problem. Studies have used hematological parameters and hemogram-derived markers as predictors of poor glycemic and microvascular complications status in diabetics. However, the tendency to use these parameters is not fully evaluated in our context, and the evidence is inadequate. This study aimed to assess the hematological profiles and prognostic role of hemogram-derived novel markers in diabetes mellitus and its complications among DM patients at Bishoftu General Hospital, Ethiopia. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 261 participants from June 15 to August 12, 2022. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select participants. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, physical measurements, checklists, and laboratory tests. Hematological parameters and fasting blood glucose levels were determined from blood using Sysmex-XN550 and Cobas C311 analyzers, respectively. Blood smear was used to check Hematology analyzer output, and to screen participants for malaria parasites. Collected data were entered into Epi-data 3.1 and exported to SPSS-25. Data were analyzed by Chi-square, Mann–Whitney U-test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Post hoc test, and ROC curve. A P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Total WBC, neutrophils, Monocyte, NLR, MLR, MPVLR, and PLR were significantly higher in poor glycemic and complicated T2DM; meanwhile, measured RBC parameters, RBC indices values were significantly lower in poor glycemic and complicated T2DM. The NLR, MLR, MPVLR, PLR, and NLR, MLR, MPVLR, RPR values were identified as predictors of poor glycemic and complication status in diabetic patients, respectively. Conclusion: Significant increment of some hematological parameters and hemogram-derived markers, and their role in predicting poor glycemic and microvascular complications were identified in diabetic patients. Routine screening of hematological parameters and use of hemogram-derived markers for monitoring of altered health status in DM is very important in the improvement of patient quality of life. Background: Highly active antiretroviral treatment is beneficial to suppress human immune virus replication in infected individuals. However, dyslipidemia and other metabolic abnormalities have emerged due to antiretroviral treatment. The prevalence of dyslipidemia in children and adolescents on antiretroviral treatment varies from 20% to 70%. The lack of data on children and adolescents in Ethiopia was the rationale for conducting this study. We aimed to determine prevalence of dyslipidemia and nutritional status in children and adolescents on follow-up at Jimma medical center.Materials and Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 children and adolescents on follow-up at Jimma medical center. A systematic sampling technique was employed. An interview was carried out to collect socioeconomic and demographic data and a review of medical records was carried out to collect patients' clinical data. Anthropometric data were computed using the CDC growth chart. About 3– 5mL of fasting blood was collected to measure lipid profile. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to find the association between risk factors and lipid profile.Results: The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia in this study was 72%. About 72% and 21.3% of study subjects had low high-density lipoprotein and high triglyceride, respectively. Significant associations were observed between BMI for age ≤ 5% (AOR: 2.02, 95% CI: 1.14– 3.66; P=0.015) and low high-density lipoprotein; greater than 150 months on treatment (AOR: 1.02, 95% CI: 1.00– 1.03; P=0.01) and high triglyceride; and BMI for age ≤ 5% (AOR: 1.86, 95% CI: 1.03– 1.37; P=0.04) and high triglyceride.Conclusion: BMI for age < 5%, treatment duration of greater than 150 months, and parents' educational level were significantly associated with dyslipidemia, so it is recommended that monitoring of those variables will help to reduce dyslipidemia and its complications in children and adolescents receiving treatment. The objective was to investigate the effects of a high canola meal-containing diet and multi-carbohydrase supplementation on growth performance and intestinal pH, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) profile, and microbiome in weaned piglets. Twenty-four piglets (7.46 ± 0.23 kg BW) were individually assigned to 1 of 3 diets in a completely randomized design. Diets were fed for 21 d: SB, corn and soybean meal-based diet; CM, 25% canola meal substituting soybean meal and adjusted to meet energy and nutrient requirements of piglets (NRC, 2012); and CM+E, CM supplemented with multi-carbohydrase (0.01%). Feed disappearance and BW were recorded weekly. On d 21, piglets were euthanized to assess digesta pH, SCFA profile, and gut microbiome. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS using the piglet as the experimental unit. There were no differences (P > 0.10) in growth performance and digesta pH. Piglets fed CM+E tended to (P = 0.051) or had significantly lower (P < 0.05) butyric acid in the cecum than piglets fed CM and SB, respectively. Piglets fed SB had higher (P < 0.05) isobutyric acid in the colon than piglets fed CM+E. Piglets fed SB and CM tended to have higher (P < 0.05) isovaleric acid in the colon than piglets fed CM+E. Piglets fed SB tended to have lower (P < 0.10) proportion of Bifidobacteria, and had lower (P < 0.05) Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcus, and Lactobacillus than piglets fed CM. Piglets fed CM+E tended to have lower (P < 0.10) Bifidobacteria and higher Clostridium XIVa than piglets fed CM, and had lower (P < 0.05) Enterococcus, but higher (P < 0.05) Lactobacillus than piglets fed CM. In conclusion, feeding 25% of canola meal in substitution to soybean meal with or without multi-carbohydrase supplementation changed the intestinal environment by modifying SCFA profile and relative proportion of microbiome, but without affecting digesta pH or growth performance in nursery piglets.
