1. The emotional radioactivity behind conflict in psychoanalytic institutions

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the unconscious elements that fuels the ‘radioactive atmosphere’ of psychoanalytic institutions - unconscious sources of the chronic conflicts that sometimes plague the relationships between members of psychoanalytical societies and obscure the path of a constructive resolution of conflict that leads to progress and further development. The starting point of this thesis was Hinshelwood’s (1999) idea about the displacement of negative countertransference feelings from patients to colleagues as a source of tensions amongst analysts. The first part of the thesis (Chapters 1-4) explores the development of the ideas on countertransference and its uses for a better understanding of ‘the patient’, surveys different perspectives on the life in psychoanalytic organizations, and points to the existence of a link between analysts’ analytic attitude towards patients and their attitude towards colleagues. The second part of the thesis presents the empirical study set to test the correspondence between the analyst’s omniscient attitude towards patient and arrogant attitude towards colleagues (Chapter 6). The preliminary findings indicates that ‘sibling rivalry’ and complicated relations during training as one source of conflict in psychoanalytic institutions, and are further investigated in the empirical research presented in Chapter 7, using the psychoanalytically informed research interview as an experimental situation, an original research method. The final chapter examines the main findings of this empirical research.

5. 'DEVEREUX’S CAT' – THE OBSERVER’S COUNTERTRANSFERENCE IN SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH

Abstract

The applications of notion of countertransference as analyst’s critical instrument were extended to social research. In this paper, the author discusses the views of George Devereux, one of the first authors who indicate the existence, effects and uses of countertransference in social sciences research. While he shares the classical freudian views of countertransference as analyst’s transference, he adds a “complementary” perspective on countertransference, related with the cultural and social dimension, which broadens understanding of the observer-observed relation. However, in his theory it seems that there is a gap between individual and group – a subject cannot be understood in the same time as individual and member of the group. His way of using indeterminacy principle is discussed as indicating a “missing link” in his theory and projective identification is proposed as a possible solution.

Abstract

The practice of psychoanalysis places the analyst on strong pressures - the analyst works alone in the consulting room in a medium of isolation, he has to be permanently open to what is coming from the patient, he is emotionally affected by his patients and he has the responsibility to keep and maintain professional boundaries of this relationship. Hate in countertransference could generate a particular conflict in the analyst - conflict between his need to repair, to help his patient, and the hate he feels toward the patient. There is another side of psychoanalysis as a profession, in addition to the clinical practice -the psychoanalytic institutions. Intolerance to diversity, dogmatism and the proneness to schism can be seen as institutional symptoms. Some authors offer explanations from different perspectives - political, sociological, and even religious. The author suggests that in order to understand conflicts in psychoanalytic institutions one must take into account the anonymous psychoanalytic patient who maintains the psychoanalysis as a profession, and argue that hate in countertransference could be seen as one of the sources of conflict between colleagues.
