17. Synthesis and Performance Study of Pd/CeO2 Composite Catalyst for Enhanced MOR Activity.

Abstract

The present study investigates the interplay between structural composition and electrochemical characteristics of carbon-supported palladium-cerium oxide (Pd-CeO2) composites. The catalysts were synthesized using the polyol method and their potential for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) was examined. The characterization of the prepared composites are performed using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results confirm the crystal structure and that there was uniform dispersion of Pd nanoparticles on the carbon support. The methanol oxidation activity was strongly affected by cerium in the Pd catalyst which is observed by cyclic voltammetry. The most active PCC3 composite (Pd/C with 30 wt.% CeO2) with significantly low Pd content showed remarkably higher activities than the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The Pd nanoparticles occupied the surface of CeO2, thus enhancing the Pd/CeO2 interface. The higher concentration of oxygen vacancies at the CeO2 surface developed strong interactions at Pd/CeO2 interface which improved the MOR effectively. The maximum current density of 1740 mA cm−2 at the voltage of 0.27 V was obtained with PCC3 (30 wt.%). These results showed that the CeO2 based Pd/C catalyst is an attractive candidate for anode material in a direct methanol fuel cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Ternary Alkali Carbonates Effect on Electrochemical Characterization of Nanocomposite Calcium-Doped Ceria Electrolytes (LNK-CDC) for SOFC

Abstract

The entire world is facing a great shortfall in the energy supply due to the high consumption rate of fossil fuel-based energy resources. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are the best alternative energy devices, which convert hydrogen fuel directly into electricity. Alkali carbonated calcium-doped ceria electrolytes (LNK-CDC) as (Ce0.8 Ca0.2), (Ce0.7 Ca0.3), and (Ce0.6 Ca0.4) were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. With the addition of alkali carbonate, nanocomposites of ceria are well preserved after sintering at 600–700 °C. The structural and morphological properties were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Crystallite sizes were found in the range of 50–80 nm. The maximum ionic conductivity of LNK-CDC (Ce0.8Ca0.2) was achieved to be 0.14 S/cm at 650 °C for anion vacancy migration by the dense microstructure. The minimum activation energy was determined to be 0.23 eV. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra of the prepared materials show the absorbance of IR and their behavior. The maximum power density of symmetric fuel cells LNK-CDC sandwiched with LNCZ oxide electrodes was recorded as 0.52 W cm−2 at 650 °C in the presence of hydrogen (fuel). It is suggested that coating of the equal molar ratio of ternary alkali metals on ceria doped comparatively enhance the performance of new nanocomposite electrolyte for SOFC and other energy applications.

20. Fe‐Doped Ceria‐Based Ceramic Cathode for High‐Efficiency CO2 Electrolysis in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell.

Abstract

In the quest for sustainable energy solutions, solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) emerges as a key technology for converting CO2 into fuels and valuable chemicals. This work focuses on pure ceramic FexSm0.2Ce0.8O2‐δ (xFe‐SDC) as the fuel electrodes, and Sr‐free ceria‐based ceramic electrodes can be successfully constructed for x ≤ 0.05. The incorporation of Fe into the ceria lattice increases the oxygen vacancy concentration and promotes the formation of catalytic sites crucial for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Density functional theory calculations indicate that Fe enhances electrochemical performance by decreasing the CO2RR energy barrier and facilitating oxygen ion diffusion. At 800 °C and 1.5 V, single cells with 0.05Fe‐SDC cathodes manifest attractive performance, attaining current densities of −1.98 and −2.26 A cm−2 under 50% CO2/CO and pure CO2 atmospheres, respectively. These results suggest the great potential of xFe‐SDC electrodes as promising avenues for high‐performance fuel electrodes in SOEC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
