Abstract

X-ray free-electron lasers (FEL) deliver ultrabright X-ray pulses, but not the sequences of phase-coherent pulses required for time-domain interferometry and control of quantum states. For conventional split-and-delay schemes to produce such sequences the challenge stems from extreme stability requirements when splitting Angstrom wavelength beams where tiniest path length differences introduce phase jitter. We describe an FEL mode based on selective electron bunch degradation and transverse beam shaping in the accelerator, combined with a self-seeded photon emission scheme. Instead of splitting the photon pulses after their generation by the FEL, we split the electron bunch in the accelerator, prior to photon generation, to obtain phase-locked X-ray pulses with sub-femtosecond duration. Time-domain interferometry becomes possible, enabling the concomitant program of classical and quantum optics experiments with X-rays. The scheme leads to new scientific benefits of cutting-edge FELs with attosecond and/or high-repetition rate capabilities, ranging from the X-ray analog of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to damage-free measurements.

Abstract

X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs), which amplify light emitted by a relativistic electron beam, are extending nonlinear optical techniques to shorter wavelengths, adding element specificity by exciting and probing electronic transitions from core levels. These techniques would benefit tremendously from having a stable FEL source, generating spectrally pure and wavelength-tunable pulses. We show that such requirements can be met by operating the FEL in the so-called echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) configuration. Here, two external conventional lasers are used to precisely tailor the longitudinal phase space of the electron beam before emission of X-rays. We demonstrate high-gain EEHG lasing producing stable, intense, nearly fully coherent pulses at wavelengths as short as 5.9 nm (~211 eV) at the FERMI FEL user facility. Low sensitivity to electron-beam imperfections and observation of stable, narrow-band, coherent emission down to 2.6 nm (~474 eV) make the technique a prime candidate for generating laser-like pulses in the X-ray spectral region, opening the door to multidimensional coherent spectroscopies at short wavelengths.

Abstract

The SwissFEL Injector Test Facility operated at the Paul Scherrer Institute between 2010 and 2014, serving as a pilot plant and testbed for the development and realization of SwissFEL, the X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility under construction at the same institute. The test facility consisted of a laser-driven rf electron gun followed by an S-band booster linac, a magnetic bunch compression chicane and a diagnostic section including a transverse deflecting rf cavity. It delivered electron bunches of up to 200 pC charge and up to 250 MeV beam energy at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The measurements performed at the test facility not only demonstrated the beam parameters required to drive the first stage of an FEL facility, but also led to significant advances in instrumentation technologies, beam characterization methods and the generation, transport and compression of ultra-low-emittance beams. We give a comprehensive overview of the commissioning experience of the principal subsystems and the beam physics measurements performed during the operation of the test facility, including the results of the test of an in-vacuum undulator prototype generating radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet and optical range., Comment: 60 pages, 70 figures; final version as published, except with table of contents and Fig. 68 in full resolution

Abstract

Studies of a broad bandwidth, two-colour FEL amplifier using one monoenergetic electron beam are presented. The two-colour FEL interaction is achieved using a series of undulator modules alternately tuned to two well-separated resonant frequencies. Using the broad bandwidth FEL simulation code Puffin, the electron beam is shown to bunch strongly and simultaneously at the two resonant frequencies. Abstract

CompactLight is a Design Study funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation funding programme, with Grant Agreement No. 777431. CompactLight was conducted by an International Collaboration of 23 international laboratories and academic institutions, three private companies, and five third parties. The project, which started in January 2018 with a duration of 48 months, aimed to design an innovative, compact, and cost-effective hard X-ray FEL facility complemented by a soft X-ray source to pave the road for future compact accelerator-based facilities. The result is an accelerator that can be operated at up to 1 kHz pulse repetition rate, beyond today's state of the art, using the latest concepts for high brightness electron photoinjectors, very high gradient accelerating structures in X-band, and novel short-period undulators. In this report, we summarize the main deliverable of the project: the CompactLight Conceptual Design Report, which overviews the current status of the design and addresses the main technological challenges.

Abstract

Activation of the surroundings of an accelerator must be quantified and those data provided to the official agencies. This is a necessary step in obtaining the authorization to operate such an accelerator. SwissFEL, being a fourth generation light source, will produce more accelerated charges, which are dumped or lost, than conventional third generation light source, such as the Swiss Light Source. We have simulated the propagation of a dark current beam produced in the photoelectron gun using tracking codes like ASTRA and Elegant for the current layout of SwissFEL. Experimental studies have been carried out at the SwissFEL test facilities at PSI (C-Band RF Stand and SwissFEL Injector Test Facility), in order to provide necessary input data for detailed study of components (RF gun and C-band RF structures) using the simulation code OPAL. Abstract

A recent breakthrough in laser-plasma accelerators, based upon ultrashort high-intensity lasers, demonstrated the generation of quasi-monoenergetic GeV-electrons. With future Petawatt lasers ultra-high beam currents of ~100 kA in ~10 fs can be expected, allowing for drastic reduction in the undulator length of free-electron-lasers (FELs). We present a discussion of the key aspects of a table-top FEL design, including energy loss and chirps induced by space-charge and wakefields. These effects become important for an optimized table-top FEL operation. Abstract

Various methods have been proposed to condition an electron beam in order to reduce its emittance effect and to improve the short-wavelength free electron laser (FEL) performance. In this paper, we show that beam conditioning does not result in a complete elimination of the emittance effect in an alternating-gradient focusing FEL undulator. Using a one-dimensional model and a three-dimensional simulation code, we derive a criteria for the emittance limitation of a perfectly conditioned beam that depends on the focusing structure.

Abstract

Background: Technical protection measures for laboratory activities involving biological agents include biological safety cabinets (BSC) that may be contaminated. In the case of diagnostic activities with SARS-CoV-2, this may also affect BSC that are operated at protection level 2; therefore, decontamination of all contaminated surfaces of the BSC may be required. In addition to fumigation with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), dry fogging of H2O2-stabilized peroxyacetic acid (PAA) represents another alternative to fumigation with formalin. However, to prove their efficacy, these alternatives need to be validated for each model of BSC.Methods: The validation study was performed on 4 different BSCs of Class II A2 using the "Mini Dry Fog" system.Results: An aerosol concentration of 0.03% PAA and 0.15% H2O2 during a 30 min exposure was sufficient to inactivate SARS-CoV-2. Effective concentrations of 1.0% PAA and 5% H2O2 were required to decontaminate the custom-prepared biological indicators loaded with spores of G. stearothermophilus and deployed at 9 different positions in the BSC. Commercial spore carriers were easier to inactivate by a factor of 4, which corresponded to a reduction of 106 in all localizations.Conclusions: Dry fogging with PAA is an inexpensive, robust, and highly effective decontamination method for BSCs for enveloped viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Kommerziell erhältliche Sporenkeimträger waren um den Faktor 4 empfindlicher, was in allen Positionen einer Reduktion um 106 entsprach.Schlussfolgerung: Trockenvernebelung von PES ist ein preisgünstiges, robustes und für behüllte Viren wie SARS-CoV-2 hoch wirksames Dekontaminationsverfahren für MSW. Abstract

Background: Technical protection measures for laboratory activities involving biological agents include biological safety cabinets (BSC) that may be contaminated. In the case of diagnostic activities with SARS-CoV-2, this may also affect BSC that are operated at protection level 2; therefore, decontamination of all contaminated surfaces of the BSC may be required. In addition to fumigation with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), dry fogging of H2O2-stabilized peroxyacetic acid (PAA) represents another alternative to fumigation with formalin. However, to prove their efficacy, these alternatives need to be validated for each model of BSC.Methods: The validation study was performed on 4 different BSCs of Class II A2 using the "Mini Dry Fog" system.Results: An aerosol concentration of 0.03% PAA and 0.15% H2O2 during a 30 min exposure was sufficient to inactivate SARS-CoV-2. Effective concentrations of 1.0% PAA and 5% H2O2 were required to decontaminate the custom-prepared biological indicators loaded with spores of G. stearothermophilus and deployed at 9 different positions in the BSC. Commercial spore carriers were easier to inactivate by a factor of 4, which corresponded to a reduction of 106 in all localizations.Conclusions: Dry fogging with PAA is an inexpensive, robust, and highly effective decontamination method for BSCs for enveloped viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Abstract

There are many economic environments in which an object is offered sequentially to prospective buyers. It is often observed that once the object for sale is turned down by one or more agents, those that follow do the same. One explanation that has been proposed for this phenomenon, which goes back to Banerjee (1992) and Bikhchandani (1992) is that agents making choices further down the line rationally ignore their own assessment of the object's quality and herd behind their predecessors. We develop novel tests to detect information-based herding, based on heterogeneity in agent ability, together with a methodology to quantify its welfare consequences, that are applied to organ transplantation in the U.K. We find that herding is common and is an important contributor to the high rate at which organs are rejected by transplant centers (and subsequently discarded). However, herding does not raise discard rates much above the level that would be obtained if private assessments were made publicly available. Instead, the (limited) information contained in predecessors' decisions substantially reduces the acceptance of bad organs. This is because in our application (i) high ability centers are often willing to deviate from the herd and follow their own positive signals, and (ii) sequences are exogenously terminated relatively quickly.

Abstract

Microbunching instability is a well-known phenomenon that may deteriorate the performance of accelerators. The instability may be triggered by a shot-noise mechanism or by some initial intensity modulations at the generation of the electron bunch (or both) and can be amplified all along the machine. At SwissFEL, the free-electron laser (FEL) facility operating at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), the initial design stipulated a shaping of the photocathode laser output to obtain a flat-top longitudinal profile. This scheme is attractive in terms of the uniformity of the beam properties along the bunch. The drawback of this approach is that some unavoidable modulations are generated along the laser pulse. We investigate, both experimentally and by numerical simulations, the longitudinal dynamics of a beam obtained illuminating a copper cathode with a laser profile shaped by the stacking technique. We repeat the analysis for several compression factors and initial laser profile modulations. We find that the microbunching instability gain renders the use of the stacking technique not efficient to run a free-electron laser facility using as photocathode a material with a short response time. We experimentally demonstrate that the use of a material with a longer response time efficiently damps the structures originating from the laser profile obtained with stacking, and helps to improve the performance of the facility. In general, this is an approach to minimize the microbunching instability at any FEL (also not using stacking) or at least reduce the use of other countermeasures, which, such as the laser heater, may degrade the final FEL performance.
