The Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival emerged as the world's third Birkebeiner cross-country ski loppet in 1985, emulating the Norwegian Birkebeiner and the American Birkebeiner. This study examines the early years of the Canadian Birkebeiner as a heritage sport tourism event with routes near Edmonton, Alberta, that became an annual festival and attraction in western Canada. Invented tradition, sportscapes, and heritage sport tourism are a conceptual frame to analyse how the Festival represented the Birkebeiner legends, how skiers and skiing constituted landscapes, and how the event contributed to sustainability. The Canadian Birkebeiner resulted in a winter sport festival and sportscape that shaped cross-country skiing, trails, and public lands, and was indicative of fluid social relations and rural place making by means of skiing. Based on archival and oral history sources, the study argues the Canadian Birkebeiner was an invented tradition that originated with a ski loppet instrumental in the negotiation of terrain for cross-country skiing that contributed to winter sportscapes and heritage sport tourism in the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, and, ultimately, within the UNESCO Beaver Hills Biosphere. The National Film Board's 1946 production Holiday at School was the culmination of a decade's work in university extension education by Donald Roy Cameron, the director of the Banff School of Fine Arts. Established by the University of Alberta in 1933 and shaped by Cameron's vision from 1936 to 1966, the Banff School promoted Canadian nation-building through the arts and contributed to the construction of Banff as a prime tourism destination and wilderness recreation park. The strategy was not unlike the way Canadian cultural policy in the mid-twentieth century approached national development through tourism in the national parks and through film-making by the National Film Board. All three institutions--the National Film Board, the Banff School of Fine Arts, and Banff National Park--constructed Banff as a symbolic national landscape for leisure and tourism consumption. The film Holiday at School was thus produced at the intersection of these institutions participating in the construction of citizenship in Canada after the Second World War: holidays at the Banff School became a site for the expression of postwar ideals of liberal democratic citizenship that encompassed public education, leisure consumerism, and Canadian nationalism.

This study examines the life history of Margaret Fleming (1901-1999) -- a Canadian mountaineer, editor, school teacher and single woman who lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Fleming, a lifetime member of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC), was introduced to her first mountaineering camp in 1929 by Elizabeth Parker. Through the ACC, Fleming climbed in the Rockies, participated in early ski-mountaineering explorations into the Yoho National Park backcountry, served as the first woman editor of the Canadian Alpine Journal (1942-1952) and cultivated long-lasting friendships with other climbers. As a professional woman who juggled the responsibilities of work, family and leisure, Fleming's mountaineering life was shaped by the gendering of physical and social culture. Fleming integrated her pursuits as a genteel mountain woman and literary editor, within the context of an ongoing process of negotiations over women's place in mountain leisure.

The article discusses the history of the Gyro International Club social organization in relation to municipal playground development and urban reform in Edmonton, Alberta between 1921 and 1944. According to the article, Gyro Club playgrounds were intended to enrich urban childhood and build neighborly communities.
