1. Airgap Flux Search Coil-Based Estimation of Permanent Magnet Temperature for Thermal Protection of PMSMs

Abstract

Airgap flux monitoring, commonly used in wound field synchronous generators, has recently received a lot of attention for detecting faults in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), since a low-cost airgap search coil can provide reliable detection of motor faults. In this article, the feasibility of using the airgap search coil for estimating the temperature of the PM, TPM, for thermal protection is evaluated for the first time. The model- or signal injection-based methods proposed for TPM estimation can provide satisfactory estimates of the average TPM for thermal protection. However, the complexity in the compensation required for non-ideal effects and/or the negative impact of high frequency signal injection can limit their practical use. The new TPM estimation method based on the airgap search coil voltage measurement proposed in this article does not require compensation for resistance variation or inverter non-linearity, or injection of high-frequency signals. In addition, it can provide detection of rotor faults, and thermal protection based on the TPM estimate of the hottest PM since individual PMs can be monitored. Experimental results on a 2.2 kW IPMSM verify the claims and show that the existing methods can be simplified with the proposed method.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the effects of magnetic saturation, including cross-saturation and secondary saliencies, on the saliency-based sensorless control of interior permanent magnet synchronous machines. These effects are mitigated by adaptively decoupling saturation-induced saliencies via a structured neural network. This paper includes the identification of the dominant saturation-induced components of the carrier-signal current interfering with the rotor-position-dependent component being tracked, characterization of these components, and implementation of a nonlinear adaptive saturation-induced-component structured neural network model to perform their decoupling. Abstract

This paper studies the performance limits of carrier-signal-injection-based sensorless control methods. When a high-frequency carrier-signal voltage is injected into a salient ac machine, two types of signals are created that can be used to estimate the rotor position: 1) the negative-sequence carrier-signal current and 2) the zero-sequence carrier-signal components. The limitations of ac machine sensorless control using each of these signals are analyzed in this paper. The analysis focuses on three key performance metrics: 1) the accuracy; 2) the bandwidth; and 3) the stability of the estimated position. Index Terms--Rotor position estimation, saliency-based sensorless control.
