Abstract

Thin films of pyrrole and bithiophene copolymer, with an alternating layered structure prepared by the potential-programmed electropolymerization method, are analyzed by photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Optical and electrochemical methods are used in the estimation of band edges of thin films of the copolymers. A decrease of the thiophene fraction in the film shifted the PL spectra of the copolymers to higher energies, which corresponds to band structure changes.

Abstract

A novel potential programmed electropolymerization method which enables us to fabricate any microscopic depth structures in conducting polymer ultrathin films, such as heterolayers and sloped layers, have been developed. The depth profiles of the heterolayers such as thickness and polymer composition are controlled by applied electrode potential, and a nanometer order layered structure has been easily synthesized. The aim of the present study is to manipulate electric, optical and the other various properties specific to the depth structure by changing structural parameters such as polymer composition or doping level of the layers, finally to realize an organic superlattice. This paper deals with the preparation of any microscopic depth structures of conducting polymers such as type I and type II heterostructures Esaki et al proposed 1) as superlattice, by the present potential programmed electropolymerization method, and the structure-specific properties, including a quantum size effect.

Abstract

Compositionally modulated layered structures are fabricated in polypyrrole-poly (3-methylthiophene) composite thin films by the potential-programmed electropolymerization method reported previously (T. Iyoda, H. Toyoda, M. Fujitsuka, R. Nakahara, H. Tsuchiya, K. Honda and T. Shimidzu, J. Phys. Chem., 95 (1991) 5215). The depth profilings by secondary ion mass spectrometry. Auger electron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis indicate that the resulting thin films have compositionally modulated layered structures, consistent with the designed structures. The diversified profiling by the above techniques is an extremely valuable means of analysing the layered structures of these conducting polymer thin films in terms of their periodicity and compositional modulation.

The alternate layered and graded structures with 100-A-order resolution are observed in polypyrrole-poly(3-methylthiophene) composite thin films by potential-programmed electropolymerization of a mixture of pyrrole and 3-methylthiophene. The compositional depth profiles of the resulting films are analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and electron-probe microanalysis
