This study aims to examine the association between malignant peritoneal cytology and prognosis in women with endometrial cancer.We retrospectively analyzed the records of patients with endometrial cancer who underwent surgery with intraoperative peritoneal cytology at our hospital between January 1988 and December 2012. All results were reclassified according to the 2009 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) system, and the relation between intraoperative peritoneal cytology results and recurrence and prognosis was examined.Of the 908 patients analyzed, 205 (22.6%) had positive peritoneal cytology. Patients with positive peritoneal cytology had significantly lower rates of recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) than those in the negative cytology group (both p 0.001). Subgroup analysis of patients with FIGO stage I/II showed significantly lower RFS in the positive-cytology group (p = 0.005), but there was no significant difference in OS (p = 0.637). In the patients with FIGO stage III/IV or patients classified as "high risk," the RFS and OS were significantly lower in the positive-cytology group (both p 0.001). Cox regression analysis identified positive peritoneal cytology as a significant predictor of recurrence in patients with FIGO stage I/II disease.Patients with positive peritoneal cytology for endometrial cancer have a high risk of recurrence, regardless of histopathologic type or FIGO stage. Peritoneal cytology has already been removed from the 2009 FIGO classification of endometrial cancer, but it may deserve reconsideration.

Hysterectomy for large uterine anterior cervical myoma is a challenging surgical procedure. We summarize our experience in the management of large uterine anterior cervical myoma. Three patients underwent hysterectomy for uterine anterior cervical myoma with similar sizes and different positions treated by laparoscopic surgery. Total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) for cervical myoma is possible by performing ureterolysis and adopting retrograde hysterectomy. Because the position of myoma is important to determine the difficulty of TLH, we propose to measure the axis between the most caudal point of the myoma and external cervical os and pubococcygeal line as a possible useful method in objectively predicting the difficulty of TLH for large anterior cervical myoma.

Objective Previous studies have described the clinical statistics and treatment outcomes of leukoplakia of the oral cavity. However, because leukoplakia is often clinically diagnosed without any histopathological examination, current opinion regarding treatment methods and preoperative pathological diagnosis is inconsistent and no standard site-specific treatment guidelines exist for oral leukoplakia. The purpose of this study is to clinically evaluate carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) laser treatment for leukoplakia of the tongue. Methods We examined 38 lesions in 35 patients of lingual leukoplakia who underwent CO 2 laser treatment with using Lugol staining at our department over a 10-year period, i.e., from 2001 to 2010. We investigated gender-related differences, age distribution, left and right differences, clinical classification, histopathological diagnosis (presence or absence of epithelial dysplasia), treatment technique (excision or evaporation), recurrence rate, residual rate, and malignant transformation among these cases. Results Of the 38 lesions that fulfilled the inclusion requirements, 35 were excised and 3 were evaporated. After CO 2 laser treatment, the recurrence and residual rates for lingual leukoplakia were 10.5% and 7.9%, respectively. The recurrence rate of cases examined in this study was lower than that reported by our hospital previously (2004) and many other hospitals. None of the lesions exhibited malignant transformation. Conclusions Our results suggest that the CO 2 laser excision method with using Lugol staining, as performed at our hospital, is useful for the treatment of lingual leukoplakia.

The purpose of this study is to determine which is more beneficial to improving learner writing: reviewing peer texts or one’s own text. The study took place over one semester at a Japanese university with 51 students enrolled in two writing classes at two proficiency levels. The students at the lower proficiency level reviewed peer texts, while those at the higher proficiency level reviewed their own texts. Multiple task sheets were used in both classes for students to give detailed feedback on texts. To examine gains in writing quality, a comparative analysis was conducted on writing samples collected at the beginning and the end of the semester. A questionnaire survey was also conducted to investigate the students’ perceptions towards the tasks. The results of the analysis indicated that the students who focused on reviewing their own texts made more total gains in score than did the students who focused on reviewing peer texts. On the other hand, a significant correlation was observed between score gains and perceived effectiveness of the task with the students who focused on reviewing peer texts. The pedagogical implications of the results are discussed.
