1. Principal component analysis for max-stable distributions

Abstract: Principal component analysis (PCA) is one of the most popular dimension reduction techniques in statistics and is especially powerful when a multivariate distribution is concentrated near a lower-dimensional subspace. Multivariate extreme value distributions have turned out to provide challenges for the application of PCA since their constraint support impedes the detection of lower-dimensional structures and heavy-tails can imply that second moments do not exist, thereby preventing the application of classical variance-based techniques for PCA. We adapt PCA to max-stable distributions using a regression setting and employ max-linear maps to project the random vector to a lower-dimensional space while preserving max-stability. We also provide a characterization of those distributions which allow for a perfect reconstruction from the lower-dimensional representation. Finally, we demonstrate how an optimal projection matrix can be consistently estimated and show viability in practice with a simulation study and application to a benchmark dataset., Comment: 34 pages, 11 Figures

2. A semi-group approach to Principal Component Analysis

Abstract: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a well known procedure to reduce intrinsic complexity of a dataset, essentially through simplifying the covariance structure or the correlation structure. We introduce a novel algebraic, model-based point of view and provide in particular an extension of the PCA to distributions without second moments by formulating the PCA as a best low rank approximation problem. In contrast to hitherto existing approaches, the approximation is based on a kind of spectral representation, and not on the real space. Nonetheless, the prominent role of the eigenvectors is here reduced to define the approximating surface and its maximal dimension. In this perspective, our approach is close to the original idea of Pearson (1901) and hence to autoencoders. Since variable selection in linear regression can be seen as a special case of our extension, our approach gives some insight, why the various variable selection methods, such as forward selection and best subset selection, cannot be expected to coincide. The linear regression model itself and the PCA regression appear as limit cases.

Abstract: Various soil health indicators that measure a chemically defined fraction of nitrogen (N) or a process related to N cycling have been proposed to quantify the potential to supply N to crops, a key soil function. We evaluated five N indicators (total soil N, autoclavable citrate extractable N, water‐extractable organic N, potentially mineralizable N, and N‐acetyl‐β‐D‐glucosaminidase activity) at 124 sites with long‐term experiments across North America evaluating a variety of managements. We found that 59%–81% of the variation in N indicators was among sites, with indicator values decreasing with temperature and increasing with precipitation and clay content. The N indicators increased from 6%–39% in response to decreasing tillage, cover cropping, retaining residue, and applying organic sources of nutrients. Overall, increasing the quantity of organic inputs, whether from increased residue retention, cover cropping, or rotations with higher biomass, resulted in higher values of the N indicators. Although N indicators responded to management in similar ways, the analysis cost and availability of testing laboratories is highly variable. Further, given the strong relationships of the N indicators with carbon (C) indicators, measuring soil organic C along with 24‐h potential C mineralization could be used as a proxy for N supply instead of measuring potentially mineralizable N or any other N indicator directly. Nitrogen indicators of soil health vary predictably across North America with climate and soil texture.The response to soil health practices is similar across all indicators.There are strong correlations among nitrogen indicators, but also between carbon and nitrogen indicators.Soil organic carbon and 24‐h carbon mineralization potential can be used to capture nitrogen cycling.

Abstract: Farmers, scientists, and other soil health stakeholders require interpretable indicators of soil hydraulic function. Determining which indicators to use has been difficult because of measurement disconformity, spatial and temporal variability, recently established treatments, and the effect of site characteristics on management practice differences. The North American Project to Evaluate Soil Health Measurements includes 124 sites uniformly sampled across a range of soil health management practices in North America in 2019. We compare and recommend indicators of hydraulic function that best characterize soil health. We assessed the relationship of each indicator to a suite of soil inherent properties and climate variables, the response of each indicator to soil health management practices, the effect that soil inherent properties (clay content, sand content, and pH) and climatic variables (10‐yr mean annual precipitation and temperature) had on response to management practices, and the relationship among the responses of the indicators to soil health management practices. Field capacity measured on intact cores (θFC_INTACT) was the best measure of soil hydraulic function, because it responded to management, represents a direct measure of soil hydraulic function, is proximal to stakeholder values, and its response to management was not significantly influenced by inherent and climatic variables. Other suitable indicators are bulk density, soil organic carbon (SOC), and aggregate stability, which are not direct measures of soil hydraulic function but do respond to management and may be practical in situations in which measuring θFC_INTACTis not. This study informs selection of soil health indicators to measure soil hydraulic function. Across sites, management changed aggregate stability, C, and bulk density.Management also changed field capacity for intact cores, but not repacked cores.Increased residue, organic nutrient sources, less tillage, each increased field capacity by 4%.Residue retention, organic nutrients and less tillage reduced bulk density by 2–3%.Field capacity for intact cores was the most responsive and direct indicator.

Abstract: Currently accepted pedotransfer functions show negligible effect of management‐induced changes to soil organic carbon (SOC) on plant available water holding capacity (θAWHC), while some studies show the ability to substantially increase θAWHCthrough management. The Soil Health Institute's North America Project to Evaluate Soil Health Measurements measured water content at field capacity using intact soil cores across 124 long‐term research sites that contained increases in SOC as a result of management treatments such as reduced tillage and cover cropping. Pedotransfer functions were created for volumetric water content at field capacity (θFC) and permanent wilting point (θPWP). New pedotransfer functions had predictions of θAWHCthat were similarly accurate compared with Saxton and Rawls when tested on samples from the National Soil Characterization database. Further, the new pedotransfer functions showed substantial effects of soil calcareousness and SOC on θAWHC. For an increase in SOC of 10 g kg–1(1%) in noncalcareous soils, an average increase in θAWHCof 3.0 mm 100 mm–1soil (0.03 m3m–3) on average across all soil texture classes was found. This SOC related increase in θAWHCis about double previous estimates. Calcareous soils had an increase in θAWHCof 1.2 mm 100 mm–1soil associated with a 10 g kg–1increase in SOC, across all soil texture classes. New equations can aid in quantifying benefits of soil management practices that increase SOC and can be used to model the effect of changes in management on drought resilience. New pedotransfer functions show organic C increases plant available water.Noncalcareous soils show greater effects of organic C on plant available water.Increase in plant available water from organic C is more than double previous estimates.These pedotransfer functions can easily be used in hydrologic models.A gap is bridged for modeling the effect of increased soil organic C on plant available water.

Vancomycin MIC was determined by Etest as either high (>=1.5 mg/L) or low (<1.5 mg/L). Isolates underwent spa typing to infer clonal complexes and multiplex PCR for identifying virulence genes. Univariate analysis was performed to evaluate the association between in-hospital and 1-year mortality, and vancomycin MIC phenotype. Results Sixty-two cases met the inclusion criteria. Vancomycin MIC was low in 28 cases (45%) and high in 34 cases (55%). No significant differences in patient demographic data or characteristics of infection were observed between patients with infective endocarditis due to high and low vancomycin MIC isolates. Isolates with high and low vancomycin MIC had similar distributions of virulence genes and clonal lineages. In-hospital and 1-year mortality did not differ significantly between the two groups (32% (9/28) vs. 27% (9/34), p 0.780; and 43% (12/28) vs. 29% (10/34), p 0.298, for low and high vancomycin MIC respectively). Conclusions In this international cohort of patients with left-sided MSSA endocarditis treated with antistaphylococcal beta-lactams, vancomycin MIC phenotype was not associated with patient demographics, clinical outcome or virulence gene repertoire.Copyright © 2017 European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

Abstract: Background-Host factors and complications have been associated with higher mortality in infective endocarditis (IE). We sought to develop and validate a model of clinical characteristics to predict 6-month mortality in IE. Methods and Results-Using a large multinational prospective registry of definite IE (International Collaboration on Endocarditis [ICE]-Prospective Cohort Study [PCS], 2000-2006, n=4049), a model to predict 6-month survival was developed by Cox proportional hazards modeling with inverse probability weighting for surgery treatment and was internally validated by the bootstrapping method. This model was externally validated in an independent prospective registry (ICE-PLUS, 2008-2012, n=1197). The 6-month mortality was 971 of 4049 (24.0%) in the ICE-PCS cohort and 342 of 1197 (28.6%) in the ICE-PLUS cohort. Surgery during the index hospitalization was performed in 48.1% and 54.0% of the cohorts, respectively. In the derivation model, variables related to host factors (age, dialysis), IE characteristics (prosthetic or nosocomial IE, causative organism, left-sided valve vegetation), and IE complications (severe heart failure, stroke, paravalvular complication, and persistent bacteremia) were independently associated with 6-month mortality, and surgery was associated with a lower risk of mortality (Harrell's C statistic 0.715). In the validation model, these variables had similar hazard ratios (Harrell's C statistic 0.682), with a similar, independent benefit of surgery (hazard ratio 0.74, 95% CI 0.62-0.89). A simplified risk model was developed by weight adjustment of these variables. Conclusions-Six-month mortality after IE is 25% and is predicted by host factors, IE characteristics, and IE complications. Surgery during the index hospitalization is associated with lower mortality but is performed less frequently in the highest risk patients. A simplified risk model may be used to identify specific risk subgroups in IE.

12. Do Tillage, Cover Crops, and Compost Management within Organic Grain Cropping Affect Greenhouse Gas Emissions?

Abstract: Organic crop production is increasing with consumer demand, but research is needed on the best management practices that minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study was conducted in central Missouri from 2012 to 2014 using a 3-yr rotation, consisting of corn (Zea mays L.), cereal rye cover crop (Secale cereale L.), soybean (Glycine max L.), winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), summer cover crop mix [Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.)], and cereal rye/hairy vetch cover crop mix (Vicia villosa L.). Treatments included tillage/cover crop practice (TCCP) combinations: (i) tillage with no cover crop (TNCC), (ii) tillage with cover crop (TCC), and (iii) no-till with cover crop (NTCC) and compost additions relative to the recommended rate (0×, 1×, 1.5×). Carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission measurements followed GRACEnet protocol. GHG emissions were not influenced by management practices in 2012 due to severe drought. TCCP had direct (2013 corn, 2014 soybean) or interactive (2014 wheat) effects on CO2 emissions; compost had a direct effect (2014 corn) on N2O emissions. Drought in 2012 and 2013 contributed to generally low CO2 and N2O emissions (99-2924 kg CO2-C ha-1 and 0-0.8 kg N2O-N ha-1, respectively) while emissions increased in 2014 (527-7740 kg CO2-C ha-1 and <0.1-10.1 kg N2O-N ha-1, respectively). Across all years and crops, NTCC showed greater CO2 emissions than TNCC (1579 and 893 kg CO2-C ha-1, respectively). Abstract: Background. The impact of early valve surgery (EVS) on the outcome of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) prosthetic valve infective endocarditis (PVIE) is unresolved. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between EVS, performed within the first 60 days of hospitalization, and outcome of SA PVIE within the International Collaboration on Endocarditis-Prospective Cohort Study. Methods. Participants were enrolled between June 2000 and December 2006. Cox proportional hazards modeling that included surgery as a time-dependent covariate and propensity adjustment for likelihood to receive cardiac surgery was used to evaluate the impact of EVS and 1-year all-cause mortality on patients with definite left-sided S. aureus PVIE and no history of injection drug use. Results. EVS was performed in 74 of the 168 (44.3%) patients. One-year mortality was significantly higher among patients with S. aureus PVIE than in patients with non-S. aureus PVIE (48.2% vs 32.9%; P = .003). Staphylococcus aureus PVIE patients who underwent EVS had a significantly lower 1-year mortality rate (33.8% vs 59.1%; P = .001). In multivariate, propensity-adjusted models, EVS was not associated with 1-year mortality (risk ratio, 0.67 [95% confidence interval, .39-1.15]; P = .15). Conclusions. In this prospective, multinational cohort of patients with S. aureus PVIE, EVS was not associated with reduced 1-year mortality. The decision to pursue EVS should be individualized for each patient, based upon infection-specific characteristics rather than solely upon the microbiology of the infection causing PVIE.Copyright © The Author 2014.

Abstract: Candida infective endocarditis is a rare disease with a high mortality rate. Our understanding of this infection is derived from case series, case reports, and small prospective cohorts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical features and use of different antifungal treatment regimens for Candida infective endocarditis. This prospective cohort study was based on 70 cases of Candida infective endocarditis from the International Collaboration on Endocarditis (ICE)-Prospective Cohort Study and ICE-Plus databases collected between 2000 and 2010. The majority of infections were acquired nosocomially (67%). Congestive heart failure (24%), prosthetic heart valve (46%), and previous infective endocarditis (26%) were common comorbidities. Overall mortality was high, with 36% mortality in the hospital and 59% at 1 year. On univariate analysis, older age, heart failure at baseline, persistent candidemia, nosocomial acquisition, heart failure as a complication, and intracardiac abscess were associated with higher mortality. Mortality was not affected by use of surgical therapy or choice of antifungal agent. A subgroup analysis was performed on 33 patients for whom specific antifungal therapy information was available. In this subgroup, 11 patients received amphotericin B-based therapy and 14 received echinocandin-based therapy. Despite a higher percentage of older patients and nosocomial infection in the echinocandin group, mortality rates were similar between the two groups. In conclusion, Candida infective endocarditis is associated with a high mortality rate that was not impacted by choice of antifungal therapy or by adjunctive surgical intervention. Additionally, echinocandin therapy was as effective as amphotericin B-based therapy in the small subgroup analysis.Copyright © 2015, American Society for Microbiology.

15. Crop Yield and Soil Organic Carbon in Conventional and No-till Organic Systems on a Claypan Soil.

Abstract: Organic crop production is dependent on tillage for weed control, but because tillage can lead to decreased levels of soil organic carbon (SOC) alternative management needs to be explored. This study was conducted in Boone County, Missouri, in 2012 to 2014 to determine the effects of three organic production systems and four poultry compost rates on crop yield and SOC on a claypan soil. The production systems included tillage wiThno cover crop, tillage wiTha mowed and incorporated cover crop, and no-till wiTha crimped cover crop in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max L.) rotation. Cover crops included cereal rye (Secale cereale L) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.). Compost rates were 0, half the recommended rate, the recommended rate, and 1.5 times the recommended rate. Achieving cover crop biomass sufficient for weed suppression was a challenge when soil fertility declined during the study. Corn yield was reduced 30% in 2013 in no-till plots compared to tilled although plant populations were nearly equal, indicating that N immobilization may be significant in crimped cover crops. When there was adequate soil moisture and weed control from the cover crop, soybean grown under organic no-till was competitive wiThtilled treatments. Optimum timing of cover crop crimping for acceptable weed control was more successful in a soybean system compared wiThcorn. Organic no-till in this study was more successful in soybean and wheat than in corn, when the cover crop biomass was sufficient to suppress weeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Methods and results Among 5591 patients included in the International Collaboration on Endocarditis Prospective Cohort Study, 1467 patients with definite IE were operated on during the active phase and had a biological (37%) or mechanical (63%) valve replacement. Patients who received bioprostheses were older (62 vs 54 years), more often had a history of cancer (9% vs 6%), and had moderate or severe renal disease (9% vs 4%); proportion of health care-associated IE was higher (26% vs 17%); intracardiac abscesses were more frequent (30% vs 23%). In-hospital and 1-year death rates were higher in the bioprosthesis group, 20.5% vs 14.0% (p = 0.0009) and 25.3% vs 16.6% (p <.0001), respectively. In multivariable analysis, mechanical prostheses were less commonly implanted in older patients (odds ratio: 0.64 for every 10 years), and in patients with a history of cancer (0.72), but were more commonly implanted in mitral position (1.60). Bioprosthesis was independently associated with 1-year mortality (hazard ratio: 1.298). Conclusions Patients with IE who receive a biological valve replacement have significant differences in clinical characteristics compared to patients who receive a mechanical prosthesis. Biological valve replacement is independently associated with a higher in-hospital and 1-year mortality, a result which is possibly related to patient characteristics rather than valve dysfunction. Background Nearly half of patients require cardiac surgery during the acute phase of infective endocarditis (IE). We describe the characteristics of patients according to the type of valve replacement (mechanical or biological), and examine whether the type of prosthesis was associated with in-hospital and 1-year mortality.Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Abstract: The HACEK organisms (Haemophilus species, Aggregatibacter species, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, and Kingella species) are rare causes of infective endocarditis (IE). The objective of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with HACEK endocarditis (HE) in a large multi-national cohort. Patients hospitalized with definite or possible infective endocarditis by the International Collaboration on Endocarditis Prospective Cohort Study in 64 hospitals from 28 countries were included and characteristics of HE patients compared with IE due to other pathogens. Of 5591 patients enrolled, 77 (1.4%) had HE. HE was associated with a younger age (47 vs. 61 years; p<0.001), a higher prevalence of immunologic/vascular manifestations (32% vs. 20%; p<0.008) and stroke (25% vs. 17% p = 0.05) but a lower prevalence of congestive heart failure (15% vs. 30%; p = 0.004), death in-hospital (4% vs. 18%; p = 0.001) or after 1 year follow-up (6% vs. 20%; p = 0.01) than IE due to other pathogens (n = 5514). On multivariable analysis, stroke was associated with mitral valve vegetations (OR 3.60; CI 1.34-9.65; p<0.01) and younger age (OR 0.62; CI 0.49-0.90; p<0.01). The overall outcome of HE was excellent with the in-hospital mortality (4%) significantly better than for non-HE (18%; p<0.001). Prosthetic valve endocarditis was more common in HE (35%) than non-HE (24%). The outcome of prosthetic valve and native valve HE was excellent whether treated medically or with surgery. Current treatment is very successful for the management of both native valve prosthetic valve HE but further studies are needed to determine why HE has a predilection for younger people and to cause stroke. The small number of patients and observational design limit inferences on treatment strategies. Self selection of study sites limits epidemiological inferences. © 2013 Chambers et al.

Abstract: Background. The timing of cardiac surgery after stroke in infective endocarditis (IE) remains controversial. We examined the relationship between the timing of surgery after stroke and the incidence of in-hospital and 1-year mortalities. Methods. Data were obtained from the International Collaboration on Endocarditis-Prospective Cohort Study of 4794 patients with definite IE who were admitted to 64 centers from June 2000 through December 2006. Multivariate logistic regression and Cox regression analyses were performed to estimate the impact of early surgery on hospital and 1-year mortality after adjustments for other significant covariates. Results. Of the 857 patients with IE complicated by ischemic stroke syndromes, 198 who underwent valve replacement surgery poststroke were available for analysis. Overall, 58 (29.3%) patients underwent early surgical treatment vs 140 (70.7%) patients who underwent late surgical treatment. After adjustment for other risk factors, early surgery was not significantly associated with increased in-hospital mortality rates (odds ratio, 2.308; 95% confidence interval[CI], .942-5.652). Overall, probability of death after 1-year follow-up did not differ between 2 treatment groups (27.1% in early surgery and 19.2% in late surgery group, P = .328; adjusted hazard ratio, 1.138; 95% CI, .802-1.650). Conclusions. There is no apparent survival benefit in delaying surgery when indicated in IE patients after ischemic stroke. Further observational analyses that include detailed pre- and postoperative clinical neurologic findings and advanced imaging data (eg, ischemic stroke size), may allow for more refined recommendations on the optimal timing of valvular surgery in patients with IE and recent stroke syndromes.Copyright © The Author 2012.

Abstract: The HACEK organisms (Haemophilus species, Aggregatibacter species, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, and Kingella species) are rare causes of infective endocarditis (IE). The objective of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with HACEK endocarditis (HE) in a large multi-national cohort. Patients hospitalized with definite or possible infective endocarditis by the International Collaboration on Endocarditis Prospective Cohort Study in 64 hospitals from 28 countries were included and characteristics of HE patients compared with IE due to other pathogens. Of 5591 patients enrolled, 77 (1.4%) had HE. HE was associated with a younger age (47 vs. 61 years; p<0.001), a higher prevalence of immunologic/vascular manifestations (32% vs. 20%; p<0.008) and stroke (25% vs. 17% p = 0.05) but a lower prevalence of congestive heart failure (15% vs. 30%; p = 0.004), death in-hospital (4% vs. 18%; p = 0.001) or after 1 year follow-up (6% vs. 20%; p = 0.01) than IE due to other pathogens (n = 5514). On multivariable analysis, stroke was associated with mitral valve vegetations (OR 3.60; CI 1.34-9.65; p<0.01) and younger age (OR 0.62; CI 0.49-0.90; p<0.01). The overall outcome of HE was excellent with the in-hospital mortality (4%) significantly better than for non-HE (18%; p<0.001). Prosthetic valve endocarditis was more common in HE (35%) than non-HE (24%). The outcome of prosthetic valve and native valve HE was excellent whether treated medically or with surgery. Current treatment is very successful for the management of both native valve prosthetic valve HE but further studies are needed to determine why HE has a predilection for younger people and to cause stroke. The small number of patients and observational design limit inferences on treatment strategies. Self selection of study sites limits epidemiological inferences. © 2013 Chambers et al.

Abstract: Background: The significance of heterogeneous vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (hVISA) is unknown. Using a multinational collection of isolates from methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infective endocarditis (IE), we characterized patients with IE with and without hVISA, and we genotyped the infecting strains. Method(s): MRSA bloodstream isolates from 65 patients with definite IE from 8 countries underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for 31 virulence genes, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and multilocus sequence typing. hVISA was defined using population analysis profiling. Result(s): Nineteen (29.2%) of 65 MRSA IE isolates exhibited the hVISA phenotype by population analysis profiling. Isolates from Oceania and Europe were more likely to exhibit the hVISA phenotype than isolates from the United States (77.8% and 35.0% vs 13.9%; P< .001). The prevalence of hVISA was higher among isolates with a vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration of 2 mg/L (Pp.026). hVISA-infected patients were more likely to have persistent bacteremia (68.4% vs 37.0%; Pp.029) and heart failure (47.4% vs 19.6%; Pp.033). Mortality did not differ between hVISA- and non-hVISA-infected patients (42.1% vs 34.8%, Pp.586). hVISA and nonhVISA isolates were genotypically similar. Conclusion(s): In these analyses, the hVISA phenotype occurred in more than one-quarter of MRSA IE isolates, was associated with certain IE complications, and varied in frequency by geographic region.

23. Yield Differences Influenced by Distance from Riparian Buffers and Conservation Reserve Program.

Abstract: Riparian buffers (RB) and the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) can improve water and soil quality. However, these practices can reduce crop yields, especially at the tree/CRP-crop interface. The objective of this study was to quantify yield differences in a no-till corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L. ) Merr.] rotation with a multi-species RB, CRP, and riparian wiThroot pruning (RRP). Crop yields were determined in triplicate plots by rows from 2007 to 2010. Regression analysis was used to evaluate yield differences among years and distances from the tree/CRP-crop interface and RRP. Corn yield at 0.76-m was 97, 97, 65, and 66% lower than the yield at 9-m away from the interface in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010, respectively for RB. Averaged across 4 yr corn yields at 0.76 m was 61, 74, and 81% of that at 3, 6, and 9 m. The CRP had no effect on corn yields. Effects of RB and CRP were not significant for soybean. The RRP showed increasing yield for rows from the tree interface for corn and soybean. The distance explained 21 to 60% and 15 to 52% of the yield variations in corn and soybean, respectively, with the RRP treatment. Results are applicable only to the studied distances. Results of the study suggest selection of a less sensitive crop such as soybean for use wiThrB in the first 9 m (12 rows), or use of CRP to generate additional income and ecosystem services to offset any loss in grain. 25. Soil Thermal Properties Influenced by Perennial Biofuel and Cover Crop Management

Abstract: Core Ideas:Cover crops significantly increased soil organic C compared with no cover crop management.Perennial biofuel and cover crops had significantly higher volumetric heat capacity than row crop management.Under laboratory‐controlled conditions, perennial biofuel and cover crops improved soil thermal properties. Heat transport is an important factor that can influence the soil environment. The objective of this study was to determine if perennial biofuel and cover crops could alter soil thermal properties. Experimental treatments included two levels of cover crops (cover crops [CC] vs. no cover crops) [NC], collectively called row crops (RC), and two biofuel crop treatments. Cover crops used included cereal rye (Secale cerealeL.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa subsp. villosa), and Austrian winter pea [Pisum sativumsubsp. arvense(L.) Asch. & Graebn]. The two biofuel treatments included perennial biofuel crops (PB): giant miscanthus (Miscanthus× giganteusJ.M. Greef & Deuter ex Hodkinson & Renvoize) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatumL.). Soil samples were collected at 10‐cm depth increments from the soil surface to a depth of 30 cm. Soil thermal properties (thermal conductivity [λ], volumetric heat capacity [CV], thermal diffusivity [D]), and volumetric water content (θ) were determined at 0, ‐33, ‐100 and ‐300 kPa soil water matric potentials. Additionally, bulk density and soil organic C (SOC) were determined. Results showed that PB had 11% higher CVat saturation, probably because they had significantly higher θand SOC than RC management. Cover crops had 13% higher CVat saturation probably because they had significantly higher θand SOC than no cover crop management. Row crops had significantly higher λand Dthan PB. The results from the current study imply that CC and PB can change soil thermal properties by reducing λand Dand increasing CVunder laboratory conditions.

We performed DNA target sequencing and susceptibility testing for 91 patients with definite CNS IE who were identified from the International Collaboration on Endocarditis—Microbiology, a large, multicenter, multinational consortium. A hierarchy of gene sequences demonstrated great genetic diversity within CNS from patients with definite endocarditis that represented diverse geographic regions. In particular, rpoBsequence data demonstrated unique genetic signatures with the potential to serve as an important tool for global surveillance.

28. No‐Tillage Corn and Grain Sorghum Response to Cover Crop and Nitrogen Fertilization

Abstract: No‐tillage cropping systems may benefit from the addition of winter annual cover crops through decreased soil erosion, accumulation of biologically fixed N, or increased crop yield. The objectives of this research were to assess the amount of cover provided by winter annual legumes and oat (Avena sativaL.) to quantify the fertilizer N equivalent value of each cover crop system and the effect of cover crop and N rate on corn (Zea maysL.) and grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench] grain yield. Two experiments, one in corn and one in sorghum, were conducted in 1997, 1998, and 1999. In each experiment, the main‐plot effect was cover crop treatment while the subplot effect was spring N rates of 0, 56, 112, and 168 kg ha−1. The addition of oat to the legume cover crop treatments increased fall ground cover but decreased total spring dry matter yield. Maximum spring dry matter yield was greatest in the hairy vetch (Vicia villosaRoth)‐alone treatment. Hairy vetch alone also produced the greatest mean fertilizer N equivalent value in the corn and sorghum experiments, 43.6 and 56.9 kg N ha−1, respectfully. These values, however, were variable among years. Corn and sorghum grain yield were greatest in the Austrian winter pea (Pisum sativumL.) and hairy vetch full seeding rate treatments, 5.19 and 7.06 Mg ha−1, respectfully. Our results indicate that winter annual cover crops provide several distinct benefits to no‐tillage corn and sorghum production systems and that cover crops should be selected based on specific grower needs.

31. Intercropping Soybean into Standing Green Wheat1

Abstract: Scientists and farmers have been evaluating the intercropping of soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] into wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) before harvest as an alternative to doublecropping in the lower Midwest. It was our objective to examine the interrelationships of soybean row spacing, planting date, and N applied to wheat in a wheatsoybean intercropping system. The experiment was conducted near Columbia, MO, in 1983, 1984, and 1985, on a Mexico silt loam (Udollic and Mollic Ochraqualf). Whole‐plot treatments consisted of two cropping systems (conventional and intercropped), drilled and skiprow planting patterns (0.2‐ and 0.8‐m row spacings of soybean), and three soybean planting dates coinciding with wheat growth stages. Subplots consisted of spring applied N treatments (0, 56, and 112 kg ha−1). A wheat‐soybean double crop was also included. Wheat yields were reduced 23 and 16% when soybean was intercropped in the drilled and skiprow patterns, respectively. The date of planting did not significantly (P< 0.05) influence wheat yield in the skiprow patterns. However, wheat yield was significantly (P< 0.05) decreased as planting date was delayed in the drilled pattern because of mechanical damage. Intercropped soybean yielded 27% less than conventional soybean but 28% more than doublecropped soybean over all years and treatments. Drilling soybean at the heading stage of wheat resulted in greatest yields. In 1985, N applied in excess of 56 kg ha−1produced excessive wheat vegetative growth resulting in competition for light which caused a reduction in drilled, intercropped soybean yield. Where mechanical damage to wheat can be minimized, drilling soybean in wheat at heading can result in optimum intercrop performance.

32. Content of boron and other elements in main stem and branch leaves and seed of soybean

Abstract: Tissue testing is commonly used to determine nutrient status of crops, however, there may be differences in macro- and micronutrient content of main stem and branch leaves of plants. Macro- and micronutrient analyses of main stem and branch soybean (Glycine max [L] Merr.) leaves were performed separately to ascertain where foliar-applied boron (B) was accumulating and to determine if other nutrients were partitioned differently between main stem and branch leaves in control plants and plants treated with foliar B. Foliar applications of 2.24 kg B/ha increased main stem leaf B content from 47 to 248 μg/g and caused leaf manganese (Mn) and aluminum (Al) content to decline. In a separate experiment, foliar applications of 1.12 kg B/ha onto soybean growing on a soil high in available Al increased B leaf content by over 50 μg/g and decreased leaf Al content by 100 μg/g. In other field experiments, foliar B applications of 0.90 kg/ha or more increased leaf B content in both main stem and branch leaves. Boron content was consistently higher in branch leaves than in main stem leaves. Branch leaves and seeds of soybean were higher in the phloem-mobile elements potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) than main stem leaves. With the exception of B, the relatively phloem-immobile elements, calcium (Ca) and Mn were lower in branch leaves than in main stem leaves. The higher B content in branch leaves and seeds may indicate that B is more mobile in soybean than previously thought. The difference in macro- and micronutrient content of branch and main stem leaves and seeds should be noted when soybean leaves are being harvested for determination of macro- and micronutrient sufficiency, or when seeds are harvested for nutrient quality determinations.

33. Response of soybean to foliar-applied boron and magnesium and soil-applied boron

Abstract: Annual plants may partition carbon (C) preferentially to reproductive structures slowing root elongation and subsequent nutrient uptake. Although foliar applications of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) supplement uptake by roots, soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield increases have not been found in most studies. Experiments were designed to determine if foliar applications of boron (B), magnesium (Mg), or B+Mg would increase soybean yield and if soybean would respond to B applied to the soil several weeks prior to planting. Foliar B or Mg applied separately four times during reproductive growth did not affect soybean yield. However, four foliar applications of B+Mg increased soybean yield 12% at Mt. Vernon and 4% at Columbia over a three-year period. Two foliar applications of B+Mg during the late reproductive stages increased soybean yield 8% over a two-year period. The yield increase from foliar B+Mg treatment resulted from an increased number of pods on the main stem (18%) and branches (44%). A 2.8 kg/ha B application to soil eight weeks prior to planting increased soybean yield 11% during the first year and 13% the second year but had no effect on soybean yield by the third year after application. When results from the first two years were combined, 2.8 kg/ha B applied to soil increased the number of pods per branch by 17% and the number of branch pods per plant by 39%. Foliar applications of B+Mg increased soybean yield in four of six site-years in the three-year experiments at two locations.

34. Phosphate Interaction with Uptake and Leaf Concentration of Magnesium, Calcium, and Potassium in Winter Wheat Seedlings

Abstract: Low concentrations of Mg and Ca in cool‐season grasses in late fall and early spring are a primary cause of grass tetany and wheat pasture poisoning in grazing cattle. Our objective was to investigate phosphate interaction with the uptake and leaf concentration of Mg, Ca, and K in winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL., cv. Larned) seedlings. Seedlings were grown hydroponically or in pots containing perlite with a solution containing nutrient element concentrations that mimicked the soil solution of a typical midwestern alfisol. Phosphate concentration of this solution was low so that wheat seedlings depleted solution P within a few hours. At low solution P concentrations, Mg and Ca were effluxed from roots. As solution P was increased from 25 to over 100 μM, net uptake of both Mg and Ca was observed over a 48 h period. In 41‐d greenhouse experiments, Mg and Ca concentrations increased and K concentration decreased in the leaf as P treatments were increased. Tetany is likely to occur in ruminants consuming grass with equivalent ratios of K/(Ca + Mg) > 2.2. Increasing P from 50 to 400 μMlowered this ratio from 1.8 to 1.0 and from 1.7 to 1.2 in separate greenhouse experiments. Concentrations of P above 100 μMstimulated net uptake, increased leaf Mg and Ca concentration, and produced leaf tissues with a very low K/(Ca + Mg) ratio.

35. Phosphorus and Temperature Effects on Magnesium, Calcium, and Potassium in Wheat and Tall Fescue Leaves

Abstract: High K fertilization often reduces leaf Mg and Ca concentration, increasing the incidence of grass tetany, while increased P treatment increases uptake and leaf concentrations of Mg and Ca in winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.). Since P availability and uptake are often reduced at low soil temperatures, the effects of P and K nutrition on mineral element composition of wheat at two root‐zone temperatures were determined. The effects of P and NPK + Mg fertilization on leaf elemental concentrations of tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceaSchreb.) grown in the field near Mt. Vernon, MO, on a Creldon silty clay loam (fine, mixed, mesic Mollic Fragiudalf) were determined. Concentration of Mg in wheat shoots was 20% higher when treated with 400 μMP than 50 μMP, and only 9% higher when root‐zone temperature was 25°C rather than 15°C. Similarly, shoot Ca concentration was 11% higher with the high P treatment. Total plant Mg uptake was 60% greater and total Ca uptake was 51% greater with high P. The higher root‐zone temperature increased total plant Mg uptake 38% and total plant Ca uptake 36%. Increasing K treatment from 400 to 800 μMdecreased shoot Mg concentration 13% and shoot Ca concentration 7%. In the field, at soil temperatures <15°C, treatments of 20 or 28 kg ha−1P increased both Mg and Ca leaf concentration of tall fescue. When leaf Mg and Ca concentrations in control plots were below 2.0 and 4.0 g mg−1respectively, P fertilization increased Mg and Ca concentration above those thresholds considered likely to cause grass tetany. Fertilization with Mg increased leaf Mg concentration only when P fertilizer was added, but caused a decrease in leaf Ca concentration when no P fertilizer was applied. Leaf concentration and total plant uptake of Mg and Ca were more dependent on P nutrition than root temperature.

36. Foliar boron increases berry number and yield of two highbush blueberry cultivars in Missouri

Abstract: Foliar applications of boron (B) have been shown to increase fruit set and yield of several woody fruit species, but there have been no reports of foliar B effects on blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.). The objective of this study was to determine if foliar B would decrease tip dieback, alter yield components, and increase berry yield of blueberry. Blueberry plants (cvs. Collins and Blueray) were grown on a Menfro series soil (fine-silty, mixed, mesic Typic Hapludalf) with the two cultivars planted in alternate rows. Five uniform plants from each row were either treated with foliar B plus surfactant or untreated. Foliar B was applied in the fall prior to each harvest year, 1990 through 1993, and additional foliar B was applied in the spring in 1991 through 1993. Foliar B increased blueberry weight/plant by 10% over the four-year period. The increase in blueberry yield was a result of a 12% increase in number of berries/plant. Yield increase following foliar B treatment was greatest during the first two weeks of harvest for Collins and during the second two weeks for the later flowering Blueray. Following a freeze (-8°C) at flowering in March 1990, tip dieback for Collins was 75% greater in control plants than for plants treated with foliar B the previous fall. The reduced tip dieback in 1990 following foliar B treatment resulted in the largest percent increase (31%) in blueberry yield during the four-year study. However, the actual yield increase in 1990 of 201 g/plant was very similar to the four-year average increase of 238 g/plant with foliar B treatments. When the yield increase per plant is multiplied by the number of plants typically grown on a hectare of land (2500), it is apparent that foliar B applications for Collins and Blueray blueberries in the Midwest would be profitable.

Abstract: Cytokinin analysis by immunoaffinity chromatography (IAC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and radioimmunoassay (RIA) or enzyme-linked immunosorption assay (ELISA) has been used to study two separate topics: the role of tRNA in bacterial cytokinin biosynthesis and the changes in cytokinin concentration which occur during cereal grain development. Transfer RNA isopentenylation in the gall-forming plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens is encoded by the chromosomal miaA locus. Mutation of miaA reduces tRNA isopentenylation significantly and preliminary data suggest that turnover of isopentenylated tRNA is responsible for low level secretion of free N6-isopentenyladenine (iP) by the bacteria. However, the major route of cytokinin biosynthesis by gall-forming plant patho- genic bacteria is not via tRNA turnover but by direct biosynthesis mediated by dimethylallylpyro- phosphate: 5'-AMP transferase (DMAPP :AMP transferase) encoded by such genes as ipt, tzs (from A, tumefaciens) or ptz (from Pseudomonas savastanoi). Analysis of cytokinin levels in developing wheat and rice grains in the period immediately following pollination showed large transient increases in zeatin (Z) and zeatin riboside (ZR) which coincided with the period of maximum endosperm cell division reported by others. Detailed analyses of maize kernels, where development can be staged readily, showed that Z and ZR concentrations peaked 9 days after pollination (DAP). During the period 8-10 DAP, cytokinin oxidase underwent a significant increase in specific activity, indicating that cytokinin catabolism was enhanced as endosperm cell division ended.

Abstract: International audience; Background - Infective endocarditis (IE) is a common and serious complication in patients receiving chronic hemodialysis (HD). Objectives - This study sought to investigate whether there are significant differences in complications, cardiac surgery, relapses, and mortality between IE cases in HD and non-HD patients. Methods - Prospective cohort study (International Collaboration on Endocarditis databases, encompassing 7,715 IE episodes from 2000 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2012). Descriptive analysis of baseline characteristics, epidemiological and etiological features, complications and outcomes, and their comparison between HD and non-HD patients was performed. Risk factors for major embolic events, cardiac surgery, relapses, and in-hospital and 6-month mortality were investigated in HD-patients using multivariable logistic regression. Results - A total of 6,691 patients were included and 553 (8.3%) received HD. North America had a higher HD-IE proportion than the other regions. The predominant microorganism was Staphylococcus aureus (47.8%), followed by enterococci (15.4%). Abstract: International audience; BACKGROUND: The significance of heterogeneous vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (hVISA) is unknown. Using a multinational collection of isolates from methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infective endocarditis (IE), we characterized patients with IE with and without hVISA, and we genotyped the infecting strains. METHODS: MRSA bloodstream isolates from 65 patients with definite IE from 8 countries underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for 31 virulence genes, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and multilocus sequence typing. hVISA was defined using population analysis profiling. RESULTS: Nineteen (29.2%) of 65 MRSA IE isolates exhibited the hVISA phenotype by population analysis profiling. Isolates from Oceania and Europe were more likely to exhibit the hVISA phenotype than isolates from the United States (77.8% and 35.0% vs 13.9%; P < .001). The prevalence of hVISA was higher among isolates with a vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration of 2 mg/L (P = .026). hVISA-infected patients were more likely to have persistent bacteremia (68.4% vs 37.0%; P = .029) and heart failure (47.4% vs 19.6%; P = .033). Mortality did not differ between hVISA- and non-hVISA-infected patients (42.1% vs 34.8%, P = .586). hVISA and non-hVISA isolates were genotypically similar. CONCLUSIONS: In these analyses, the hVISA phenotype occurred in more than one-quarter of MRSA IE isolates, was associated with certain IE complications, and varied in frequency by geographic region.

Abstract: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are important causes of infective endocarditis (IE), but their microbiological profiles are poorly described. We performed DNA target sequencing and susceptibility testing for 91 patients with definite CNS IE who were identified from the International Collaboration on Endocarditis—Microbiology, a large, multicenter, multinational consortium. A hierarchy of gene sequences demonstrated great genetic diversity within CNS from patients with definite endocarditis that represented diverse geographic regions. Abstract: Background: The significance of heterogeneous vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (hVISA) is unknown. Using a multinational collection of isolates from methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infective endocarditis (IE), we characterized patients with IE with and without hVISA, and we genotyped the infecting strains., Methods: MRSA bloodstream isolates from 65 patients with definite IE from 8 countries underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for 31 virulence genes, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and multilocus sequence typing. hVISA was defined using population analysis profiling., Results: Nineteen (29.2%) of 65 MRSA IE isolates exhibited the hVISA phenotype by population analysis profiling. Isolates from Oceania and Europe were more likely to exhibit the hVISA phenotype than isolates from the United States (77.8% and 35.0% vs 13.9%; P < .001). The prevalence of hVISA was higher among isolates with a vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration of 2 mg/L (P = .026). hVISA-infected patients were more likely to have persistent bacteremia (68.4% vs 37.0%; P = .029) and heart failure (47.4% vs 19.6%; P = .033). Mortality did not differ between hVISA- and non-hVISA-infected patients (42.1% vs 34.8%, P = .586). hVISA and non-hVISA isolates were genotypically similar., Conclusions: In these analyses, the hVISA phenotype occurred in more than one-quarter of MRSA IE isolates, was associated with certain IE complications, and varied in frequency by geographic region.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology and public health response to an apparent cluster of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C infection in university students in a residential college. A conventional epidemiological approach was taken, supported by routine and novel diagnostic techniques. Over the two days of 21-22 August 1997, three cases of suspected meningococcal infection were notified from a residential college complex at a university campus in the Sydney metropolitan area. Neisseria meningitidis was grown from throat swabs of all three cases, and was isolated from the blood of one case only. All three isolates were typed as C:2a:P1.5,2. Seroconversion was demonstrated by a novel method in the three cases. Rifampicin was given to all identified contacts. Forty-seven days after the index case, a 19 year old female living in the same complex was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, and identified contacts given rifampicin. When this isolate was found to be group C, it was decided to vaccinate residents of the college complex. Genotyping and serotyping (C:2a:P1.5) later revealed the fourth isolate to be distinct from isolates from Cases 1-3. In conclusion the authors note that Australia's increasing capacity to type meningococcal strains is essential to understanding the epidemiology of this disease. Furthermore, typing information is of critical importance when decisions are made regarding mass vaccination. As early antibiotic treatment may inhibit isolation of the organism, development of novel approaches to diagnosis and typing should be supported.

49. GACPAT HIV 1 + 2: a simple, inexpensive assay to screen for, and discriminate between, anti-HIV 1 and anti-HIV 2.

Abstract: A simple and cheap assay suitable for screening for anti-HIV 1 and anti-HIV 2 and discriminating between them was evaluated. In it specimens are incubated in U-bottomed microplate wells coated with anti-human IgG for 30 min at room temperature. After washing, 100 microliters of a 1 in 50 dilution of HIV 1-coated gelatin particles (Serodia-HIV 1/2, Fujirebio) are added. Settling patterns are read on the second day: A positive reaction is indicated by adherence of the particles and a negative by a button. The HIV 1 particles are then washed away and HIV 2 particles added. Anti-HIV 2 reaction patterns are read on the third day. To assess the performance of the modified "GACPAT HIV 1 + 2" assay a panel of 1,621 serum/plasma specimens was used. It comprised validated anti-HIV 1 positive (n = 220), anti-HIV 2 positive (n = 214), dual anti-HIV 1/anti-HIV 2 positive (n = 11), and anti-HIV negative (n = 1,176) serum/plasma specimens. All 434 specimens that contained anti-HIV 1 or anti-HIV 2 reacted positively with the homologous particles. The 11 dually positive specimens reacted positively with both HIV 1 and HIV 2 particles. Five (2.3%) anti-HIV 1 and five (2.3%) anti-HIV 2 positive specimens gave positive reactions with both particle types, but none of the five cross-reactive anti-HIV 2 specimens were dually reactive when the order of particle addition was reversed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
