5. Long‐term outdoor study of an organic photovoltaic module for building integration.

Abstract

Organic photovoltaics (OPV) has attracted tremendous attention as a promising alternative to silicon wafer‐based technologies for building integration. While significant progress has been achieved on the power conversion efficiency of OPV technologies, their field stability is rarely studied. This work investigates the field performance and reliability of a large‐area OPV module designed for building integration in tropical Singapore for 4.5 years. The device suffered more than 14% degradation in power at the standard testing conditions from the initial performance, largely due to losses in fill factor (−12% relative). During the monitoring period, it exhibited comparable performance to more conventional silicon PV technologies, with an average specific energy yield of about 4 kWh/kWp/day and an average performance ratio of 0.96. Excellent performance at low light conditions was also observed. However, its field performance was heavily impacted by soiling, which typically led to a 5 to 10% loss in the current output after several months. Further, the device's outdoor performance also showed a three‐stage degradation process, including (1) an initial slow degradation in the first 2 years (about −1%/year), (2) a stable period with negligible performance loss from Years 2 to 3.5, and (3) a rapid degradation in the last year (about −5%/year). Abstract

This paper investigates the energy management problem for multiple self-interested users, each with renewable energy generation as well as both the fixed and controllable loads, that all share a common energy storage system (ESS). The self-interested users are willing to sell/buy energy to/from the shared ESS if they can achieve lower energy costs compared to the case of no energy trading while preserving their privacy e.g. sharing only limited information with a central controller. Under this setup, we propose an iterative algorithm by which the central controller coordinates the charging/discharging values to/from the shared ESS by all users such that their individual energy costs reduce at the same time. For performance benchmark, the case of cooperative users that all belong to the same entity is considered, where they share all the required information with the central controller so as to minimize their total energy cost. 12. Shared Energy Storage Management for Renewable Energy Integration in Smart Grid

Abstract

Energy storage systems (ESSs) are essential components of the future smart grid to smooth out the fluctuating output of renewable energy generators. However, installing large number of ESSs for individual energy consumers may not be practically implementable, due to both the space limitation and high investment cost. As a result, in this paper, we study the energy management problem of multiple users with renewable energy sources and a single shared ESS. To solve this problem, we propose an algorithm that jointly optimizes the energy charged/discharged to/from the shared ESS given a profit coefficient set that specifies the desired proportion of the total profit allocated to each user, subject to practical constraints of the system. We conduct simulations based on the real data from California, US, and show that the shared ESS can potentially increase the total profit of all users by 10% over the case that users own individual small-scale ESSs with no energy sharing., Comment: To be presented in IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Conference, Minneapolis MN, 2016

13. Quantifying the Effect on the Load Shifting Potential of Buildings due to Ancillary Service Provision

Abstract

This paper analyzes the pessimistic effect on the inherent load shifting potential (LSP) of buildings due to the participation in the reserve market. A generic model-based optimization approach is deployed, which uses a validated dynamic model along with its experienced external and internal disturbances, to quantify the LSP in the presence of various price signals. The theoretical maximum LSP is obtained using a base energy price without the provision of ancillary services (AS). The deviation from the base case LSP is observed after including the time varying energy and the reserve price from the spot market. Factors affecting the LSP are found to be as: (1) physics of the model, (2) the nature of price signal and (3) the competency of the reserve price with respect to the energy price. Due to its simple formulation, low computation requirements, and modular nature, the method proposed in this paper can easily be deployed by retailers and system operators for the assessment of monetary incentives as well as qualified load type for various demand response (DR) services in liberalized markets.

Abstract

This paper proposes a robust demand-side control algorithm in a smart grid environment for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. A robust model predictive control (RMPC) scheme in a receding horizon fashion is deployed, which optimizes electricity cost and capacity market participation of the HVAC system, while satisfying comfort and operational constraints of the building and utility, respectively. Thermal load uncertainties experienced by the HVAC system are included to perform a realistic assessment of the developed controller. The National Electricity Market of Singapore (NEMS) is used as a case study and the developed RMPC scheme is tested for various price signals and scenarios. Numerical simulation results show the effectiveness of the developed framework to be readily adopted by utilities -- interested in realizing a grid-friendly and economicaly eficient demand response (DR) strategy.
