4. Relevance Judgment Convergence Degree -- A Measure of Inconsistency among Assessors for Information Retrieval

Abstract

Relevance judgment of human assessors is inherently subjective and dynamic when evaluation datasets are created for Information Retrieval (IR) systems. However, a small group of experts' relevance judgment results are usually taken as ground truth to "objectively" evaluate the performance of the IR systems. Recent trends intend to employ a group of judges, such as outsourcing, to alleviate the potentially biased judgment results stemmed from using only a single expert's judgment. Nevertheless, different judges may have different opinions and may not agree with each other, and the inconsistency in human relevance judgment may affect the IR system evaluation results. In this research, we introduce a Relevance Judgment Convergence Degree (RJCD) to measure the quality of queries in the evaluation datasets. Abstract

The explosion of information constrains the judgement of search terms associated with Knowledge-Based Web Ecosystem (KBWE), making the retrieval of relevant information and its knowledge management challenging. The existing information retrieval (IR) tools and their fusion in a framework need attention, in which search results can effectively be managed. In this article, we demonstrate the effective use of information retrieval services by a variety of users and agents in various KBWE scenarios. An innovative Integrated Search Framework (ISF) is proposed, which utilises crawling strategies, web search technologies and traditional database search methods. Besides, ISF offers comprehensive, dynamic, personalized, and organization-oriented information retrieval services, ranging from the Internet, extranet, intranet, to personal desktop. In this empirical research, experiments are carried out demonstrating the improvements in the search process, as discerned in the conceptual ISF. The experimental results show improved precision compared with other popular search engines.

Abstract

Virtual environments (VEs) are making their way into various sectors of life to enhance and support human activity, including learning. VEs have been used in various contexts for training, and in many cases they are designed to model or simulate - as accurately and authentically as possible - a specific work context. In striving for authenticity, visual and representative realism tends to receive most of the development input, despite of several studies that challenge its importance. New training avenues have raised the importance of rigorous phenomenological descriptions for a deeper understanding of user experience in the actual context of use. This paper reports the preliminary steps in a phenomenological analysis of how employees working in actual hazardous settings experience virtual safety training environments. 19. Six Key Topics for Automated Assessment Utilisation and Acceptance

Abstract

Automated assessment technologies have been used in education for decades (e.g., computerised multiple choice tests). In contrast, Automated Essay Grading (AEG) technologies: have existed for decades; are "good in theory" (e.g., as accurate as humans, temporally and financially efficient, and can enhance formative feedback), and yet; are ostensibly used comparatively infrequently in Australian universities. To empirically examine these experiential observations we conducted a national survey to explore the use of automated assessment in Australian universities and examine why adoption of AEG is limited. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected in an online survey from a sample of 265 staff and students from 5 Australian universities. The type of assessment used by the greatest proportion of respondents was essays/reports (82.6%), however very few respondents had used AEG (3.8%). Recommendations are made regarding methods to promote technology utilisation, including the use of innovative dissemination channels such as 3D Virtual Worlds.

Abstract

In oil and gas industries, operational digital solutions are challenging because of spatially extended large-size installations and the criticality of implementation solutions in business contexts, where rising global demand for energy needs is stirring. Other challenges include using obsolete tools and technology, time-consuming digital makeovers, inflexible data systems for decision support, low levels of digital maturity, and interoperable supply chain articulations between petroleum companies. To meet the demands of digital petroleum, we construct five-layer digital data models for better integration and automation in energy industries. The research aims to develop five primary platforms, a uniform transmission network, even repository systems, sensor technology, ontology interchange language (OIL) and application layer in the digital petroleum field model. An Industrial Ethernet is proposed based on a network transmission platform for the exploration industry. The network platform is an information superhighway to gather and integrate the existing automation sub-systems, di information and provide standard interfaces for future sub-systems. Sensor technology is dependable for data acquisition qualities. The OIL layer supports the digital petroleum to interchange the petroleum Big Data and their ontology descriptions into executable computing languages. Each layer gathers information, integrates ontology-driven data in a warehouse environment, and transmits data to different petroleum industry units. Uniform hardware and software platforms of distributed networks and their data structures improve petroleum resource management. Cloud-based onshore and offshore digital petroleum entities can connect petroleum-bearing basins, including sub-basins and share information in industrial automation projects. Data geoscience emerges as a digital analytics tool, irrespective of conventional or unconventional energy sources. Future energy relies on renewable sources in pollution-free environments, and the digital model is extendable in industries where industry integration and automation are required. 50. Investigating Factors Affecting the Uptake of Automated Assessment Technology

Abstract

Automated assessment is an emerging innovation in educational praxis, however its pedagogical potential is not fully utilised in Australia, particularly regarding automated essay grading. The rationale for this research is that the usage of automated assessment currently lags behind the capacity that the technology provides, thus restricting the pedagogical benefits for students, job satisfaction for staff, and quality assurance and financial benefits for universities. The exploration of the different perspectives of stakeholders regarding their needs and expectations of automated assessment shows the high-stake game of surviving and thriving. Inter alia, students value education as a means to gain employment, educators' value education as their means of employment, and universities value education as their means of existence. The various facets of this interplay are described, including the value of knowledge and learning (pedagogical considerations); society's system for measuring worth and exchanging value (economic considerations); socio-technological evolution and emerging innovations in educational assessment, and the adoption and resistance thereof. We contribute to the field a national survey that investigated and reveals potential reasons for this sub-optimal utilisation by exploring the candid perceptions of Australian university students and teachers regarding automated assessment. Students and staff from Australian universities were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey. Two hundred and sixty five people completed the survey. The analysis utilised a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. We present a sub-set of the survey results; this sample's use of automated assessment is mapped via quantitative data, and respondents' perceptions of automated assessment are examined via a constructivist grounded theory analysis of short answer responses. Specific aims of this research were to survey the human and automated assessment practices in Australian universities (specifically, the educational roles of users (e.g., students, educators, management, IT-support, HR-administration), assessment types used, frequency and mode of use (individual vs. group), mode of awarding marks (individual vs. group), and mode of marking (human vs. computer)), examine what "automated assessment" means to respondents, explore respondents' impressions of automated essay grading, and survey respondents' use of automated assessment technologies. This sample's concept of "automated assessment" is multifaceted but can be summarised by four categories of themes that describe automated assessment as involving computers or technology, electronic media, "marking" or "assessing", and degrees of automation. Understanding stakeholders' perceptions of automated assessment is instrumental in promoting its use and benefits. The implications from the survey transfer the focal point of our research agenda to building a profound methodology for future automated assessment and, in particular, to delineate a context-specific process of integration for the relevant stakeholders (e.g., students and staff). Most important, the marketing portfolio calls for the following, among others, to be demonstrated across various educational domains: robustness regarding marking accuracy and time (compared to human marking), ease of use for inexperienced users (students as well as teachers), and economic savings. The automated assessment has to meet pedagogical benefits first, but also has to provide commercial benefits. Especially the latter one is related to the reputation of the university, which is judged in society by successful graduations and post-graduation job performance. High quality education is the harbinger of new student enrolments and the attractor of research and business projects, including endowments and sponsorship, in total increasing the financial scope. In order to increase adoption of these technologies we have to learn more about stakeholders' concerns, desires, and speak their language in order to have them move-in and feel at home using educational innovations such as automated essay grading. The contribution provides an inside view and understanding of where we are with respect to automated assessment and what is still part of the roadmap for a successful integration.
