The upgraded Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET-II) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has been designed to deliver ultra-relativistic electron and positron beams with unprecedented parameters, especially in terms of high peak current and low emittance. For most of the foreseen experimental campaigns hosted at this facility, the high energy radiation produced by these beams at the Interaction Point will be a valuable diagnostic to assess the different physical processes under study. This article describes the X-ray and {\gamma}-ray detectors installed for the initial phase of FACET-II. Furthermore, experimental measurements obtained with these detectors during the first commissioning and user runs are presented and discussed, illustrating the working principles and potential applications of these detectors., Comment: Proceedings of the Advanced Accelerator Concepts (AAC) Workshop 2022

We use an x-ray free-electron laser to study the ultrafast lattice dynamics following above band-gap photoexcitation of the incipient ferroelectric potassium-tantalate, \kto. % We use ultrafast near-UV (central wavelength 266\,nm and 50 fs pulse duration) laser light to photoexcite charge carriers across the gap and probe the ultrafast lattice dynamics by recording the x-ray diffuse intensity throughout multiple Brillouin zones using pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) (central wavelength 1.3\,\AA\, and $< 10$~fs pulse duration). We observe changes in the diffuse intensity that we conclude are associated with a hardening of the soft transverse optical and transverse acoustic phonon branches along $\Gamma$ to $X$ and $\Gamma$ to $M$. Using ground- and excited-state interatomic force constants from density functional theory (DFT) and assuming the phonon populations can be described by a time-dependent temperature, we fit the quasi-equilibrium thermal diffuse intensity to the experimental time-dependent intensity. We obtain the instantaneous lattice temperature and density of photoexcited charge carriers as a function of time delay. The DFT calculations demonstrate that photoexcitation transfers charge from oxygen $2p$ derived $\pi$-bonding orbitals to Ta $5d$ derived antibonding orbitals, further suppressing the ferroelectric instability and increasing the stability of the cubic, paraelectric structure., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We compute deviations from ideal gas behavior of the pressure, density, and Bose-Einstein condensation temperature of a relativistic gas of charged scalar bosons caused by the current-current interaction induced by electromagnetic quantum fluctuations treated via scalar quantum electrodynamics. We report the observation of photo-induced plasmon-phonon coupled modes in the group IV-VI semiconductor PbTe using Fourier-transform inelastic X-ray scattering at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). Measuring signatures of strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SF-QED) processes in an intense laser field is an experimental challenge: it requires detectors to be highly sensitive to single electrons and positrons in the presence of the typically very strong x-ray and $\gamma$-photon background levels. In this paper, we describe a particle detector capable of diagnosing single leptons from SF-QED interactions and discuss the background level simulations for the upcoming Experiment-320 at FACET-II (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory). The single particle detection system described here combines pixelated scintillation LYSO screens and a Cherenkov calorimeter. We detail the performance of the system using simulations and a calibration of the Cherenkov detector at the ELBE accelerator. Single 3 GeV leptons are expected to produce approximately 537 detectable photons in a single calorimeter channel. This signal is compared to Monte-Carlo simulations of the experiment. A signal-to-noise ratio of 18 in a single Cherenkov calorimeter detector is expected and a spectral resolution of 2% is achieved using the pixelated LYSO screens.

Using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction, we investigated optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches our simulations. We observed an asymmetry in the spectral lineshape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. We argue on the basis of symmetry that these acoustic deformations can transiently alter the electronic structure near the Weyl points and support this with model calculations. We investigate the dispersion of a classical electromagnetic field in a relativistic ideal gas of charged bosons using scalar quantum electrodynamics at finite temperature and charge density. We derive the effective electromagnetic responses and the electromagnetic propagation modes that characterize the gas as a left-handed material with negative effective index of refraction $n_{\rm eff}=-1$ below the transverse plasmon frequency. In the condensed phase, we show that the longitudinal plasmon dispersion relation exhibits a roton-type local minimum that disappears at the transition temperature., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

A non-trivial balance between Coulomb repulsion and kinematic effects determines the electronic structure of correlated electron materials. The use electromagnetic fields strong enough to rival these native microscopic interactions allows us to study the electronic response as well as the timescales and energies involved in using quantum effects for possible applications. We use element-specific transient x-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-harmonic generation to measure the response to ultrashort off-resonant optical fields in the prototypical correlated electron insulator NiO. Surprisingly, fields of up to 0.22 V/{\AA} leads to no detectable changes on the correlated Ni 3d-orbitals contrary to previous predictions. A transient directional charge transfer is uncovered, a behavior that is captured by first-principles theory. Our results highlight the importance of retardation effects in electronic screening, and pinpoints a key challenge in functionalizing correlated materials for ultrafast device operation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure, supplemental material not included in document

We study ultrafast x-ray diffraction on the charge density wave (CDW) of SmTe$_3$ using an x-ray free electron laser. The CDW peaks show that photoexcitation with near-infrared pump centered at 800 nm generates domain walls of the order parameter propagating perpendicular to the sample surface. These domain walls break the CDW long range order and suppress the diffraction intensity of the CDW for times much longer than the $\sim 1$~ps recovery of the local electronic gap. We reconstruct the spatial and temporal dependence of the order parameter using a simple Ginzburg-Landau model and find good agreement between the experimental and model fluence dependences. Based on the model we find that at long times, depending on the pump fluence, multiple domain walls remain at distances of few nm from the surface.

We show that a gas of relativistic electrons is a left-handed material at low frequencies by computing the effective electric permittivity and effective magnetic permeability that appear in Maxwell's equations in terms of the responses appearing in the constitutive relations, and showing that the former are both negative below the {\it same} frequency, which coincides with the zero-momentum frequency of longitudinal plasmons. We also show, by explicit computation, that the photonic mode of the electromagnetic radiation does not dissipate energy, confirming that it propagates in the gas with the speed of light in vacuum, and that the medium is transparent to it. We then combine those results to show that the gas has a negative effective index of refraction $n_{\rm eff}=-1$. We investigate from first-principles theory and experiment the generation of phonons on picosecond timescales and the relaxation of carriers in multiple conduction band valleys of photo-excited Ge by inter-valley electron-phonon scattering. We provide a full description of the phonon and electron relaxation dynamics without adjustable parameters. Simulations of the time-evolution of phonon populations, based on first-principles band structure and electron-phonon and phonon-phonon matrix elements, are compared with data from time-resolved x-ray diffuse scattering experiments, performed at the LCLS x-ray free-electron laser facility, which measures the diffuse scattering intensity following photo-excitation by a 50 fs near-infrared optical pulse. Comparing calculations and measurements show that the intensity of the non-thermal x-ray diffuse scattering signal, that is observed to grow substantially near the L-point of the Brillouin zone over 3-5 ps, is due to phonons generated by scattering of carriers between the $\Delta$ and L valleys. Non-thermal phonon populations throughout the Brillouin zone are observed and simulated from first principles without adjustable parameters for times up to 10 ps. With inclusion of phonon decay through 3-phonon processes, the simulations also account for other non-thermal features observed in the x-ray diffuse scattering intensity, which are due to anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering of the phonons initially generated by electron-phonon scattering., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

A workshop, "Probing strong-field QED in electron--photon interactions", was held in DESY, Hamburg in August 2018, gathering together experts from around the world in this area of physics as well as the accelerator, laser and detector technology that underpins any planned experiment. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts and those interested in measuring QED in the presence of strong fields at and above the Schwinger critical field. The pioneering experiment, E144 at SLAC, measured multi-photon absorption in Compton scattering and $e^+e^-$ pair production in electron--photon interactions but never reached the Schwinger critical field value. With the advances in laser technology, in particular, new experiments are being considered which should be able to measure non-perturbative QED and its transition from the perturbative regime. This workshop reviewed the physics case and current theoretical predictions for QED and even effects beyond the Standard Model in the interaction of a high-intensity electron bunch with the strong field of the photons from a high-intensity laser bunch. The world's various electron beam facilities were reviewed, along with the challenges of producing and delivering laser beams to the interaction region. Possible facilities and sites that could host such experiments were presented, with a view to experimentally realising the Schwinger critical field in the lab during the 2020s., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures. The unprecedented brilliance of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) [1, 2] has enabled first studies of nonlinear interactions in the hard X-ray range. In particular, X-ray-optical mixing [3], X-ray second harmonic generation (XSHG) [4] and nonlinear Compton scattering (NLCS) [5] have been recently observed for the first time using XFELs. The former two experiments as well as X-ray parametric downconversion (XPDC)[6, 7] are well explained by nonlinearities in the impulse approximation[8], where electrons in a solid target are assumed to be quasi free for X-ray interactions far from atomic resonances. However, the energy of the photons generated in NLCS at intensities reaching up to 4 x 1020 W/cm2 exhibit an anomalous red-shift that is in violation with the free-electron model. Here we investigate the underlying physics of X-ray nonlinear interactions at intensities on order of 1016 W/cm2. Specifically, we perform a systematic study of XSHG in diamond. While one phase-matching geometry has been measured in Shwartz et al.[4], we extend these studies to multiple Fourier components and with significantly higher statistics, which allows us to determine the second order nonlinear structure factor. We measure the efficiency, angular dependence, and contributions from different source terms of the process. We find good agreement of our measurements with the quasi-free electron model.

We present a combined ultrafast optical pump-probe and ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurement of the CDW dynamics in SmTe$_3$ at 300 K. The ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurements, taken at the Linac Coherent Light Source reveal a $\sim 1.55$ THz mode that becomes overdamped with increasing fluence. We identify this oscillation with the lattice component of the amplitude mode. Furthermore, these data allow for a more clear identification of the frequencies present in the optical pump-probe data. In both, reflectivity and diffraction, we observe a crossover of the response from linear (for small displacements) to quadratic in the amplitude of the order parameter displacement. Finally, a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model captures the essential features of the experimental observations., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We describe electromagnetic propagation in a relativistic electron gas at finite temperatures and carrier densities. Using quantum electrodynamics at finite temperatures, we obtain electric and magnetic responses and general constitutive relations. Rewriting the propagator for the electromagnetic field in terms of the electric and magnetic responses, we identify the modes that propagate in the gas. As expected, we obtain the usual collective excitations, i.e., a longitudinal electric and two transverse magnetic plasmonic modes. In addition, we find a purely photonic mode that satisfies the wave equation in vacuum, for which the electron gas is transparent. We present dispersion relations for the plasmon modes at zero and finite temperatures and identify the intervals of frequency and wavelength where both electric and magnetic responses are simultaneously negative, a behavior previously thought not to occur in natural systems.

The interactions between electrons and phonons drive a large array of technologically relevant material properties including ferroelectricity, thermoelectricity, and phase-change behaviour. In the case of many group IV-VI, V, and related materials, these interactions are strong and the materials exist near electronic and structural phase transitions. Their close proximity to phase instability produces a fragile balance among the various properties. The prototypical example is PbTe whose incipient ferroelectric behaviour has been associated with large phonon anharmonicity and thermoelectricity. Experimental measurements on PbTe reveal anomalous lattice dynamics, especially in the soft transverse optical phonon branch. This has been interpreted in terms of both giant anharmonicity and local symmetry breaking due to off-centering of the Pb ions. The observed anomalies have prompted renewed theoretical and computational interest, which has in turn revived focus on the extent that electron-phonon interactions drive lattice instabilities in PbTe and related materials. Here, we use Fourier-transform inelastic x-ray scattering (FT-IXS) to show that photo-injection of free carriers stabilizes the paraelectric state. With support from constrained density functional theory (CDFT) calculations, we find that photoexcitation weakens the long-range forces along the cubic direction tied to resonant bonding and incipient ferroelectricity. We use ultrafast electron diffraction to detect the temporal evolution of phonon populations in femtosecond laser-excited ultrathin single-crystalline gold films. From the time-dependence of the Debye-Waller factor we extract a 4.7 ps time-constant for the increase in mean-square atomic displacements. We show from the increase of the diffuse scattering intensity that the population of phonon modes near the X and K points in the Au fcc Brillouin zone grows with timescales of 2.3 and 2.9 ps, respectively, faster than the Debye-Waller average. We find that thermalization continues within the initially non-equilibrium phonon distribution after 10 ps. Impulsive optical excitation can generate both coherent and squeezed phonons. The expectation value of the phonon displacement $$ oscillates at the mode frequency for the coherent state but remains zero for a pure squeezed state. In contrast, both show oscillations in $<|u_q|^2>$ at twice the mode frequency. Therefore it can be difficult to distinguish them in a second-order measurement of the displacements, such as in first-order x-ray diffuse scattering. Here we demonstrate a simple method to distinguish squeezed from coherent atomic motion by measurement of the diffuse scattering following double impulsive excitation. We find that femtosecond optical excitation generates squeezed phonons spanning the Brillouin zone in Ge, GaAs and InSb. We use femtosecond time-resolved hard x-ray scattering to detect coherent acoustic phonons excited during ultrafast laser demagnetization of bcc Fe films. We determine the lattice strain propagating through the film through analysis of the oscillations in the x-ray scattering signal as a function of momentum transfer. The width of the strain wavefront is ~100 fs, similar to demagnetization timescales. First-principles calculations show that the high-frequency Fourier components of the strain, which give rise to the sharp wavefront, could in part originate from non-thermal dynamics of the lattice not considered in the two-temperature model., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the order parameter dynamics of the stripe-ordered nickelate, La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_4$, using time-resolved resonant X-ray diffraction. In spite of distinct spin and charge energy scales, the two order parameters' amplitude dynamics are found to be linked together due to strong coupling. Additionally, the vector nature of the spin sector introduces a longer re-orientation time scale which is absent in the charge sector. These findings demonstrate that the correlation linking the symmetry-broken states does not unbind during the non-equilibrium process, and the time scales are not necessarily associated with the characteristic energy scales of individual degrees of freedom., Comment: 4 figures. The macroscopic characteristics of a solid, such as its thermal, optical or transport properties are determined by the available microscopic states above its lowest energy level. These slightly higher quantum states are described by elementary excitations and dictate the response of the system under external stimuli. The spectrum of these excitations, obtained typically from inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering, is the spatial and temporal Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function of the system, which dictates how a perturbation propagates in space and time. As frequency-domain measurements do not generally contain phase information, time-domain measurements of these fluctuations could yield a more direct method for investigating the excitations of solids and their interactions both in equilibrium and far-from equilibrium. Here we show that the diffuse scattering of femtosecond x-ray pulses produced by a free electron laser (FEL) can directly measure these density-density correlations due to lattice vibrations in the time domain. We obtain spectroscopic information of the lattice excitations with unprecedented momentum- and frequency- resolution, without resolving the energy of the outgoing photon. Correlations are created via an acoustic analog of the dynamical Casimir effect, where a femtosecond laser pulse slightly quenches the phonon frequencies, producing pairs of squeezed phonons at momenta +q and -q. These pairs of phonons manifest as macroscopic, time-dependent coherences in the displacement correlations that are then probed directly by x-ray scattering. Since the time-dependent correlations are preferentially created in regions of strong electron-phonon coupling, the time-resolved approach is natural as a spectroscopic tool of low energy collective excitations in solids, and their microscopic interactions, both in linear response and beyond.

We report ultrafast surface pump and interface probe experiments on photoexcited carrier transport across single crystal bismuth films on sapphire. The film thickness is sufficient to separate carrier dynamics from lattice heating and strain, allowing us to investigate the time-scales of momentum relaxation, heat transfer to the lattice and electron-hole recombination. The measured electron-hole ($e-h$) recombination time is 12--26 ps and ambipolar diffusivity is 18--40 cm$^{2}$/s for carrier excitation up to $\sim 10^{19} \text{cm}^{-3}$. By comparing the heating of the front and back sides of the film, we put lower limits on the rate of heat transfer to the lattice, and by observing the decay of the plasma at the back of the film, we estimate the timescale of electron-hole recombination. We interpret each of these timescales within a common framework of electron-phonon scattering and find qualitative agreement between the various relaxation times observed. We find that the carrier density is not determined by the $e-h$ plasma temperature after a few picoseconds. The diffusion and recombination become nonlinear with initial excitation $\gtrsim 10^{20} \text{cm}^{-3}$.

The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerged in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of its ability to measure material properties at atomic and electronic time scales and create excited states not accessible by the conventional means can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here, combining time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on striped La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, we reveal unforeseen photo-induced phase fluctuations of the charge order parameter. Such fluctuations preserve long-range order without creating topological defects, unlike thermal phase fluctuations near the critical temperature in equilibrium10. Importantly, relaxation of the phase fluctuations are found to be an order of magnitude slower than that of the order parameter's amplitude fluctuations, and thus limit charge order recovery. This discovery of new aspect to phase fluctuation provides more holistic view for the importance of phase in ordering phenomena of quantum matter., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. We study the ultrafast phonon response of mixed-valence perovskite Cs$_2$Au$_2$I$_6$ using pump-probe spectroscopy under high-pressure in a diamond anvil cell. We observed a remarkable softening and broadening of the Au - I stretching phonon mode with both applied pressure and photoexcitation. Using a double-pump scheme we measured a lifetime of the charge transfer excitation into single valence Au$^{2+}$ of less than 4 ps, which is an indication of the local character of the Au$^{2+}$ excitation. Furthermore, the strong similarity between the pressure and fluence dependence of the phonon softening shows that the inter-valence charge transfer plays an important role in the structural transition., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

For over a century, x-ray scattering has been the most powerful tool for determining the equilibrium structure of crystalline materials. Deviations from perfect periodicity, for example due to thermal motion of the atoms, reduces the intensity of the Bragg peaks as well as produces structure in the diffuse scattering background. Analysis of the thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) had been used to determine interatomic force constants and phonon dispersion in relatively simple cases before inelastic neutron scattering became the preferred technique to study lattice dynamics. With the advent of intense synchrotron x-ray sources, there was a renewed interest in TDS for measuring phonon dispersion. The relatively short x-ray pulses emanating from these sources also enables the measurement of phonon dynamics in the time domain. Prior experiments on nonequilibrium phonons were either limited by time-resolution and/or to relatively long wavelength excitations. Here we present the first images of nonequilibrium phonons throughout the Brillouin zone in photoexcited III-V semiconductors, indium-phosphide and indium-antimonide, using picosecond time-resolved diffuse scattering. In each case, we find that the lattice remain out of equilibrium for several hundred picoseconds up to nanoseconds after laser excitation. The non-equilibrium population is dominated by transverse acoustic phonons which in InP are directed along high-symmetry directions. The results have wide implications for the detailed study of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon coupling in solids., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

A method of computer simulation of Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXD) in asymmetric Laue (transmission) geometry with an arbitrary propagating strain perpendicular to the crystal surface is presented. We present two case studies for possible strain generation by short-pulse laser irradiation: (i) a thermoelastic-like analytic model; (ii) a numerical model including effects of electron-hole diffusion, Auger recombination, deformation potential and thermal diffusion. We report on remote delivery of 25 pJ broadband near-infrared femtosecond light pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser through 150 meters of single-mode optical fiber. Pulse distortion due to dispersion is overcome with pre-compensation using adaptive pulse shaping techniques, while nonlinearities are mitigated using an SF10 rod for the final stage of pulse compression.
