The Mount Athos Peninsula is situated in the south-easternmost part of the Chalkidiki Peninsula in northern Greece. It belongs to the Serbo-Macedonian Massif (SMM), a large basement massif within the Internal Hellenides. The south-eastern part of the Mount Athos peninsula is built by fine-grained banded biotite gneisses and migmatites forming a domal structure. The southern tip of the peninsula, which also comprises Mount Athos itself, is built by limestone, marble and low-grade metamorphic rocks of the Chortiatis Unit. The northern part and the majority of the western shore of the Mount Athos peninsula are composed of highly deformed rocks belonging to a tectonic mélange termed the Athos-Volvi-Suture Zone (AVZ), which separates two major basement units: the Vertiskos Terrane in the west and the Kerdillion Unit in the east. The rock-types in this mélange range from metasediments, marbles and gneisses to amphibolites, eclogites and peridotites. The gneisses are tectonic slivers of the adjacent basement complexes. The mélange zone and the gneisses were intruded by granites (Ierissos, Ouranoupolis and Gregoriou). The Ouranoupolis intrusion obscures the contact between the mélange and the gneisses. The granites are only slightly deformed and therefore postdate the accretionary event that assembled the units and created the mélange. Pb-Pb- and U-Pb-SHRIMP-dating of igneous zircons of the gneisses and granites of the eastern Athos peninsula in conjunction with geochemical and isotopic analyses are used to put Athos into the context of a regional tectonic model. The ages form three clusters: The basement age is indicated by two samples that yielded Permo-Carboniferous U-Pb-ages of 292.6 ± 2.9 Ma and 299.4 ± 3.5 Ma. The main magmatic event of the granitoids now forming the gneiss dome is dated by Pb-Pb-ages between 140.0 ± 2.6 Ma and 155.7 ± 5.1 Ma with a mean of 144.7 ± 2.4 Ma. A within-error identical age of 146.6 ± 2.3 Ma was obtained by the U-Pb-SHRIMP method. This Late Jurassic age is also known from the Kerdillion Unit and the Rhodope Terrane. The rather undeformed granites are interpreted as piercing plutons. The small granite stocks sampled have Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary ages of 66.8 ± 0.8 Ma and 68.0 ± 1.0 Ma (U-Pb-SHRIMP)/62.8 ± 3.9 Ma (Pb-Pb). The main accretionary event was according to these data in the Late Jurassic since all younger rocks show little or no deformation. The age distribution together with the geochemical and isotopic signature and the lithology indicates that the eastern part of the Mount Athos peninsula is part of a large-scale gneiss dome also building the Kerdillion Unit of the eastern SMM and the Rhodope Massif. This finding extends the area of this dome significantly to the south and indicates that the tectonic boundary between the SMM and the Rhodope Massif lies within the AVZ. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

In north-eastern Greece the mid-greenschist facies Makri Unit and the anchizonal Melia Formation belong to the eastern Circum-Rhodope Belt that forms the uppermost tectonostratigraphic unit of the Rhodope metamorphic nappe pile. The two metasedimentary successions had different source areas, although they now lie in close proximity in the Rhodope Massif. The U-Pb isotopic ages of detrital zircons from a metasandstone of the Makri Unit analysed using LA-SF-ICP-MS and SHRIMP-II gave age clusters at ca. 310-290. Ma and at ca. 240. Ma for magmatic zircons, which may have been derived from Carboniferous-Permian basement rocks of the Thracia Terrane (Lower Tectonic Unit of the Rhodope Massif) that subsequently underwent Triassic rifting. The youngest detrital zircon grains found so far indicate that the metasedimentary succession of the Makri Unit, or at least parts of it, cannot be older than Late Triassic. By contrast, clastic sedimentary rocks of the Melia Formation contain the primary detrital mineral assemblage of epidote, zoisite, garnet, and phengitic mica, which is absent in the Makri Unit, and clearly points to metamorphic rocks being the major source for these sediments. U-Pb analyses of detrital zircons gave a prominent age cluster at ca. 315-285. Ma for magmatic zircons. Inherited cores indicate the involvement of Pan-African and Late Ordovician-Early Silurian crustal sources during Late Carboniferous-Early Permian igneous event(s). Moreover, U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology indicates that the Melia Formation cannot be older than latest Middle Jurassic. We suggest that the Melia Formation was deposited in front of a metamorphic nappe pile with Rhodopean affinities in Tithonian or Cretaceous times. Both the Makri Unit and the Melia Formation have been tectonically juxtaposed from different sources to their present location during Balkan and Alpine orogenic processes. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

The Pirgadikia Terrane in northern Greece forms tectonic inliers within the Vardar suture zone bordering the Serbo-Macedonian Massif to the southwest. It comprises Cadomian basement rocks of volcanic-arc origin and very mature quartz-rich metasedimentary rocks. U-Pb laser ablation sector-field inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses of detrital zircons from the latter reveal a marked input from a Cadomian-Pan-African source with minor contribution from Mesoproterozoic, Palaeoproterozoic and Archaean sources. The metasedimentary rocks are correlated with Ordovician overlap sequences at the northern margin of Gondwana on the basis of their maturity and zircon age spectra. The Pirgadikia Terrane can be best interpreted as a peri-Gondwana terrane of Avalonian origin, which was situated close to the Cadomian terranes in the Late Neoproterozoic-Early Palaeozoic, very much like the Istanbul Terrane. The second unit investigated is the Vertiskos Terrane, which constitutes the major part of the Serbo-Macedonian Massif in Greece. It comprises predominantly igneous rocks of Silurian age and minor metasedimentary rocks of unknown age and provenance. U-Pb analyses of detrital zircons from a garnetiferous mica schist of the Vertiskos Terrane indicate derivation from 550 to 1,150 Ma-old source rocks with a major Cadomian peak. This, combined with minor input of >1,950 Ma-old zircons and the absence of ages between ca. 1.2 and 1.7 Ga suggests a NW Africa source. The protolith age of the garnetiferous mica schist is presumably Early Ordovician. One sample of garnet-bearing biotite gneiss, interpreted as meta-igneous rock, comprises predominantly subhedral zircons of igneous origin with late Middle Ordovician to Silurian ages. We suggest that the rock association of the Vertiskos Terrane is part of an ancient active-margin succession of the Hun superterrane, comparable to successions of the Austro- and Intra-Alpine Terranes. The new data of this study provide evidence of occurrences of Avalonia- and Armorica-derived terranes in the Eastern Mediterranean and moreover help to clarify palaeogeographic reconstructions for the peri-Gondwana realm in the Early Palaeozoic. © The Author(s) 2009.

Uppermost Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sediments from the Vardar suture zone in northern Greece record a cycle of Neotethyan oceanic basin opening and closure and their analysis places tight constraints on the geotectonic evolution of the area. The oldest post-Carboniferous sedimentary unit in the study area is the Examili Formation, which comprises mainly metaarkoses and metaquartzites, and was deposited in an intracontinental rift-related sedimentary basin in proximity to the Vertiskos Terrane during the Permian-Triassic. The Melissochori Formation (former Svoula flysch) comprises predominantly metasandstones with significant carbonate content and was deposited in front of a Carboniferous-Permian basement unit of volcanic-arc origin with minor input from older basement rocks, probably at the slope of a carbonate platform in the Early-Middle Jurassic. By contrast, the petrography and whole-rock geochemistry of sedimentary rocks of the Prinochori Formation point to a source area dominated by mafic-ultramafic but also intermediate rocks, presumably ophiolites and granodiorites or equivalents. This is reinforced by the presence of detrital chrome spinel, which is the first find of this mineral in sedimentary successions from the eastern Vardar Zone of northern Greece. Microprobe analyses suggest that most of the detrital chrome spinels were derived from MOR-type peridotites and supra-subduction zone (SSZ) peridotites, whereas only a small fraction comes from volcanic rocks, presumably mid-ocean ridge and island-arc basalts. The Prinochori Formation was probably deposited in front of a nappe complex in the Early Cretaceous, comprising ophiolitic rocks and basement slivers from the Vertiskos Terrane or equivalent rocks. Furthermore, a microfauna assemblage of Ovalveolina sp., Pseudonummuloculina sp. and dasycladacea algae of genus Thaumatoporella sp. was found in a calcareous clastic succession cropping out in the Oreokastro area, which was so far thought to be of Late Triassic-Middle Jurassic age. These data clearly indicate an Albian-Cenomanian age of deposition for this sedimentary succession. In conclusion, the rocks of the eastern Vardar suture zone record Mesozoic rifting, related to the opening of a Neotethyan Ocean, Middle Jurassic intraoceanic subduction, attendant volcanic-arc magmatism, ophiolite emplacement, and finally oceanic basin closure. New geochronological and geochemical data on basement orthogneisses from the Vertiskos Unit of the Serbo-Macedonian Massif (SMM), Internal Hellenides, northern Greece, are used in order to constrain the pre-Alpine tectonic history of the basement units in the metamorphic hinterland of the Hellenides. The prevailing rock types in the Vertiskos crystalline basement are coarse-grained biotite augengneisses with subordinate leucocratic muscovite gneisses and two-mica gneisses. Zircon Pb-Pb and U-Pb ages on 20 samples range from 425.9 ± 4.2 Ma to 443.4 ± 5.5 Ma with a mean of 432.2 ± 3.2 Ma and are interpreted as primary crystallisation ages of the basement granites on the basis of the magmatic internal structure of the zircon grains. Trace-element and isotope geochemistry of the gneisses show that they originated in a magmatic-arc setting, but also contain material from pre-existing continental crust. The rocks are slightly peraluminous and some leucocratic gneisses are strongly depleted in incompatible trace elements. The zircon ages document an early Silurian magmatic phase in the Internal Hellenides. The association of lithologies and ages is distinctly different from that of the adjacent basement massifs. This difference in basement provenance and the fact that the Vertiskos Unit is bordered by ophiolitic material both to the west and to the east leads to the conclusion that this part of the SMM is an exotic terrane of northern Gondwanan origin, which was finally accreted to its present position during the Alpine orogeny. The Vertiskos Terrane may have been part of the Hun Superterrane, which evolved at the northern active continental margin of Gondwana in the early Palaeozoic and rifted away from it during the opening of the Rheic Ocean in the Cambrian to Silurian. The Serbo-Macedonian Massif is a basement complex in the Internal Hellenides of northern Greece, situated between the Vardar Zone to the west and the Rhodope Massif to the east. The Serbo-Macedonian Massif comprises several distinct basement units interpreted as terranes, the largest of which is the Gondwana-derived Vertiskos Terrane in the northwestern and central parts of the massif. A series of leucocratic meta-granites intrude the Silurian orthogneiss basement of the Vertiskos Terrane. No similar granites are found in any of the other units of the Internal Hellenides. The meta-granites have a pronounced crustal within-plate signature which is visible in lithology, major- and trace-element geochemistry and the Sr isotopic compositions. These intrusions were dated using the Pb-Pb single-zircon evaporation method, and yielded a Triassic age of between 240.7 ± 2.6 Ma and 221.7 ± 1.9 Ma on 17 samples, with a mean age of 228.3 ± 5.6 Ma. The zircons are purely magmatic, indicating that ages are primary crystallization ages. A Rb-Sr errorchron of the whole-rock samples of the Arnea granite yielded an age of 231.6 ± 9.9 Ma (MSWD = 82), and a mean 87Sr86Sr initial ratio is 0.7142, indicating a crust-dominated source, and suggesting an A-type origin for the granites. The A-type meta-granites together with mafic intrusive bodies (amphibolites) in the Vertiskos Terrane may be evidence of Triassic rifting that led to the formation of a branch of Neotethys (Vardar-Meliata Ocean). Similar rock associations are also exposed in the Cyclades, and in massifs of the wider eastern Mediterranean realm related to the Gondwana-derived Hun Terrane, indicating that the Arnea-type granites are representatives of a major regional rifting event in Triassic times. © 2009 Cambridge University Press.

Detrital zircon geochronology and analysis of fossiliferous olistoliths from Chios Island, Greece, are used here to constrain terrane accretion processes and the provenance of crustal sources for sediments during the subduction of (a branch of) the Palaeotethys Ocean. U/Pb ages obtained by ion microprobe (SHRIMP-II) analyses of detrital zircons from a Carboniferous greywacke belonging to the tectonostratigraphic Lower Unit of Chios gave major age groups of 2150-1890 Ma, 640-540 Ma, 505-475 Ma and 365-322 Ma. Detrital zircons from a Permian-Triassic sandstone yielded prominent age clusters of 2200-1840 Ma, 1100-910 Ma, 625-560 Ma and 385-370 Ma. The lack of zircon ages between 1.8 and 1.1 Ga in both samples, coupled with the occurrence of ca. 2 Ga-old zircons, imply a northern Gondwana (NW Africa) source. The conodont fauna recovered from an 'Orthoceras'-bearing limestone lens from the Carboniferous succession of the Lower Unit indicates a Late Silurian age. The fauna is typical of the Ludfordian Polygnathoides siluricus conodont zone. The material has a conodont colour alteration index (CAI) of about 1-2, indicating very low-grade thermal alteration of less than 100 °C. The closest localities with similar conodont-bearing limestones are to be found in the Balkan region and in the Istanbul Zone of northern Turkey. The occurrence of 'Orthoceras Limestone' can be used as an indicator of palaeosource reconstruction. Our new zircon ages in conjunction with provenance analysis of Silurian to Lower Carboniferous olistoliths strongly suggest that the clastic succession of Chios received its detritus from basement rocks of the Sakarya microcontinent in western Turkey and time and facies equivalents of Palaeozoic units from the Istanbul Zone in northern Turkey and the Balkan region due to subduction of a branch of Palaeotethys close to the southern active margin of Eurasia in Late Palaeozoic times. The Hellenides constitute an integral part of the Alpine orogenic system in southeast Europe. Despite the recognition of several subparallel zones, which are interpreted as terranes separated by ophiolitic sutures (e.g., Pindos and Vardar sutures), the classical view of an orogen with a foreland fold-and-thrust belt, a central crystalline zone, and a rather undeformed hinterland is still under discussion. This paper concentrates on basement terranes of exotic provenance in two of the internal zones of the Hellenides that support the interpretation of the Hellenides as an accretionary orogen formed by amalgamation of crustal segments during the subduction of Tethyan oceanic basins. The oldest of these terranes, the Florina terrane in the Pelagonian zone, is composed of Neoproterozoic arc-related orthogneisses. Two other exo4tic terranes occur east of the Vardar zone within the Serbo-Macedonian Massif. The Pirgadikia terrane is a microterrane in the southern Chalkidiki Peninsula that consists of PanAfrican mylonitic orthogneisses with volcanic arc-related trace-element geochemistry and Sr isotopic composition. The Vertiskos terrane occupies the northwestern part of the Serbo-Macedonian Massif and is primarily composed of coarse-grained, volcanic arc-related peraluminous orthogneisses of Silurian age. These terranes are exotic in relation to the other parts of the Hellenides. The provenance of the late Proterozoic Pan-African Florina and Pirgadikia terranes is assumed to be Gondwanan, whereas the Silurian Vertiskos terrane may have been part of the so-called Hun terrane, which formed at the northern active continental margin of Gondwana in the early Paleozoic. © 2007 The Geological Society of America. The provenance and depositional setting of Late Palaeozoic and Early Mesozoic clastic sediments from the eastern Aegean archipelago are examined here for the first time using whole-rock geochemistry and composition of detrital chrome spinel. Major- and trace-element data for Late Palaeozoic and Permo-Triassic clastic sediments from the Lower and Upper Units of Chios are compatible with an acidic to intermediate source, minor input of (ultra)mafic detritus and recycling of older sedimentary components. Chondrite-normalized REE profiles are uniform with light REE enrichments (LaN/YbN c. 7.7), negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* c. 0.67) and flat heavy REE patterns (GdN/Yb'N c. 1.5), indicating an upper continental crustal source and/or young differentiated arc material. Detrital chrome spinel from the clastic sediments of Chios has Cr-number (Cr/(Cr + Al)) values between 0.29 and 0.89 and Mg-number (Mg/(Mg + Fe2+)) values between 0.24 and 0.70, suggesting a probably mixed (ultra)mafic source involving ridge peridotites (mid-ocean ridge type), fore-arc peridotites and island-arc basalts. The metasediments from the islands of Inousses and Psara have similar whole-rock chemical signatures to those of Chios, although no evidence was found for an (ultra)mafic source. We conclude that both the Late Palaeozoic sediments from the Lower and Upper Units of Chios and the metasediments from Inousses and Psara were deposited in a continental island-arc setting until at least Late Permian times, probably at a single Palaeotethyan margin. They are interpreted to be allochthonous, tectonically transported to their present position by Late Mesozoic to Cenozoic orogenic processes.

The Serbo-Macedonian Massif (SMM) is a large, elongate basement complex in the Internal Hellenides, which stretches from Serbia to the Chalkidiki Peninsula in northern Greece. As a result of similarities in lithology and structural grain, the SMM has long been considered part of the adjacent Rhodope Massif. Recent work, however, based on precise geochronological and geochemical data, has revealed that the SMM is not a homogeneous crustal entity but made up of several crustal units, only one of which is related to the Rhodope Massif. One of these units, the Pirgadikia Unit, occurs as a tectonic sliver in a mélange zone bordering the western margin of the SMM that separates it from the adjacent Vardar Zone. The Pirgadikia Unit consists of leucocratic mylonitic para- and orthogneisses. According to trace-element and Sr-isotope data, the orthogneisses originated in a magmatic arc setting. Dating of this unit by the Pb-Pb single-zircon evaporation method yielded Pan-African ages of 555.8 ± 2.6 Ma on a paragneiss collected near the village of Taxiarchis, and two ages of 570.0 ± 7.0 Ma and 587.6 ± 3.4 Ma on orthogneisses from the quayside at Pirgadikia village. The rocks enveloping this Late Precambrian basement complex are gneisses of the Vertiskos Unit. This unit, which is regarded as a distinct terrane, occupies the northwestern part of the Greek SMM and consists of Silurian orthogneisses with a magmatic arc signature and subordinate metasediments. Orthogneisses of the Vertiskos Unit adjacent to the mylonites of the Pirgadikia Unit gave Pb-Pb ages of between 428.2 ± 1.2 Ma and 433.0 ± 2.1 Ma. One of these samples was additionally dated by the conventional U-Pb method. This sample has three concordant zircon grains confirming a Silurian intrusion age and two inherited cores pointing to an older basement into which precursor rocks to the Silurian gneisses were intruded. The upper intercept of a Concordia plot yielded an age of c. 2.5 Ga, which is a common age in the cratons of Gondwana. The Pan-African age of the Pirgadikia Unit and the inherited ages of the Vertiskos Unit support the notion that these units are terranes derived from Gondwana. They were finally accreted to the Hellenic orogen during the closure of one of the branches of the Tethys Ocean. The presence of exotic terranes in the Internal Hellenides contradicts the hypothesis that this part of the Hellenides formed a stable hinterland during the Alpine phase and thus the Hellenides can be considered an accretionary orogen. © The Geological Society of London 2006.

The Pelagonian Zone in Greece represents the westernmost belt of the Hellenide hinterland (Internal Hellenides). Previous geochronological studies of basement rocks from the Pelagonian Zone have systematically yielded Permo-Carboniferous ages. In this study we demonstrate, for the first time, the existence of a Precambrian crustal unit within the crystalline basement of the Pelagonian Zone. The U-Pb single-zircon and SHRIMP ages of these orthogneisses vary from 699 ± 7 Ma to 713 ± 18 Ma, which identify them as the oldest rocks in Greece. These Late Proterozoic rocks, which today occupy an area of c. 20 × 100 km, are significantly different from the neighbouring rocks of the Pelagonian Zone. They are therefore interpreted as delineating a terrane, named here the Florina Terrane. During the Permo-Carboniferous, Florina was incorporated into an active continental margin, where it formed part of the basement for the Pelagonian magmatic arc. The activity of this arc was dated in this study by single-zircon Pb/Pb ages as having taken place at 292 ± 5 Ma and 298 ± 7 Ma. During the Alpine orogeny, Florina, together with the Pelagonian Zone, eventually became a constituent of the Hellenides. Geochemically, the Florina orthogneisses represent granites formed at an active continental margin. Because of the Late Proterozoic ages, this Late Proterozoic active continental margin can be correlated to a Pan-African or Cadomian arc. As the gneisses contain inherited zircons of Late to Middle Proterozoic age, the original location of Florina was probably at the northwestern margin of Gondwana. Similar to other Gondwana-derived terranes, such as East Avalonia, Florina approached the southern margin of Eurasia during Palaeozoic times, where it became part of an active continental margin above the subducting Palaeotethys. These interpretations further indicate that terrane accretion was already playing an important role in the early pre-alpine evolution of the Hellenides. © 2006 Cambridge Univesity Press.
