Abstract

This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle {\theta}13. The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. Abstract

The GERDA (GERmanium Detector Array) is an experiment for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) in 76Ge, located at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN (Italy). In the first phase of the experiment, a 90% confidence level (C.L.) sensitivity of 2.4·1025 yr on the 0νββ decay half-life was achieved with a 21.6 kg·yr exposure and an unprecedented background index in the region of interest of 10-2 counts/(keV·kg·yr). No excess of signal events was found, and an experimental lower limit on the half-life of 2.1 · 1025 yr (90% C.L.) was established. Abstract

An infrastructure to characterize germanium detectors has been designed and constructed at the HADES Underground Research Laboratory, located in Mol (Belgium). Thanks to the 223m overburden of clay and sand, the muon flux is lowered by four orders of magnitude. This natural shield minimizes the exposure of radio-pure germanium material to cosmic radiation resulting in a significant suppression of cosmogenic activation in the germanium detectors. The project has been strongly motivated by a special production of germanium detectors for the GERDA experiment. GERDA, currently collecting data at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN, is searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge. In the near future, GERDA will increase its mass and sensitivity by adding new Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors. The production of the BEGe detectors is done at Canberra in Olen (Belgium), located about 30km from the underground test site. Therefore, HADES is used both for storage of the crystals over night, during diode production, and for the characterization measurements. A full quality control chain has been setup and tested on the first seven prototype detectors delivered by the manufacturer at the beginning of 2012. The screening capabilities demonstrate that the installed setup fulfills a fast and complete set of measurements on the diodes and it can be seen as a general test facility for the fast screening of high purity germanium detectors. The results are of major importance for a future massive production and characterization chain of germanium diodes foreseen for a possible next generation 1-tonne double beta decay experiment with 76Ge., Comment: Submitted to JINST

Abstract

The hemispherical 10" photomultiplier tube (PMT) R7081 from Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) is used in various experiments in particle and astroparticle physics. We describe the test and calibration of 474 PMTs for the reactor antineutrino experiment Double Chooz. The unique test setup at Max-Planck-Institut f\"ur Kernphysik Heidelberg (MPIK) allows one to calibrate 30 PMTs simultaneously and to characterize the single photo electron response, transit time spread, linear behaviour and saturation effects, photon detection efficiency and high voltage calibration.

12. Process Development for Batch Production of Micro-Milling Tools Made of Silicon Carbide by Means of the Dry Etching Process.

Abstract

Downsized and complex micro-machining structures have to meet quality requirements concerning geometry and convince through increasing functionality. The development and use of cutting tools in the sub-millimeter range can meet these demands and contribute to the production of intelligent components in biomedical technology, optics or electronics. This article addresses the development of double-edged micro-cutters, which consist of a two-part system of cutter head and shaft. The cutting diameters are between 50 and 200 μm. The silicon carbide cutting heads are manufactured from the solid material using microsystem technology. The substrate used can be structured uniformly via photolithography, which means that 5200 homogeneous micro-milling heads can be produced simultaneously. This novel batch approach represents a contrast to conventionally manufactured micro-milling cutters. The imprint is taken by means of reactive ion etching using a mask made of electroplated nickel. Within this dry etching process, characteristic values such as the etch rate and flank angle of the structures are critical and will be compared in a parameter analysis. At optimal parameters, an anisotropy factor of 0.8 and an etching rate of 0.34 µm/min of the silicon carbide are generated. Finally, the milling heads are diced and joined. In the final machining tests, the functionality is investigated and any signs of wear are evaluated. A tool life of 1500 mm in various materials could be achieved. This and the milling quality achieved are in the range of conventional micro-milling cutters, which gives a positive outlook for further development.
