The Red Sea sponge Latrunculia magnifica, if threatened, excretes a reddish fluid which can kill a fish. Two structurally new toxins have been isolated from this toxin, namely the latrunculin A and B. The two toxins can be synthesized through highly convergent and stereocontrolled routes. A detailed NMR study on the latrunculins revealed that they are the first macrolides isolated from a marine specie.
